Abstract:Developing solid catalysts with multiple active sites working cooperatively is desirable for efficient chemical transformations. However, most solid catalysts are rigid and impede the cooperation between their spatially isolated active sites. Two flexible porous organic frameworks (POFs) with integrated Co(salen) as active sites have been successfully synthesized for mimicking the cooperative modes of enzymes. The POFs exhibit second-order rate dependence on Co(salen) concentration in the network and afford much higher TOF (3300 versus 2670 h(-1)) than the homogeneous counterpart in the hydration of propylene epoxide. POFs with a flexible network thus not only facilitate but also enhance the cooperation of nearby Co(salen). Moreover, POFs could catalyze oversized substrates, have a wide substrate scope, and exhibit high stability.
Combination of Binary Active Sites into Heterogeneous Porous Polymer Catalysts for Efficient Transformation of CO2 under Mild Conditions

Abstract:The transformation of CO2 into cyclic carbonates via atom-economical cycloadditions with epoxides has recently attracted tremendous attention. On one hand, though many heterogeneous catalysts have been developed for this reaction, they typically suffer from disadvantages such as the need for severe reaction conditions, catalyst loss, and large amounts of soluble co-catalysts. On the other hand, the development of heterogeneous catalysts featuring multiple and cooperative active sites, remains challenging and desirable. In this study, we prepared a series of porous organic catalysts (POP-PBnCl-TPPMg-x) via the copolymerization metal-porphyrin compounds and phosphonium salt monomers in various ratios. The resulting materials contain both Lewis-acidic and Lewis-basic active sites. The molecular-level combination of these sites in the same polymer allows these active sites to work synergistically, giving rise to excellent performance in the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 with epoxides, under mild conditions (40 °C and 1 atm CO2) in the absence of soluble co-catalysts. POP-PBnCl-TPPMg-12 can also efficiently fixate CO2 under low-CO2-concentration (15% v/v N2) conditions representative of typical CO2 compositions in industrial exhaust gases. More importantly, this catalyst shows excellent recyclability and can easily be separated and reused at least five times while maintaining its activity. In view of their heterogeneous nature and excellent catalytic performance, the obtained catalysts are promising candidates for the transformation of industrially generated CO2 into high value-added chemicals.
Flexibility Matters: Cooperative Active Sites in Covalent Organic Framework and Threaded Ionic Polymer

Abstract:The combination of two or more reactive centers working in concert on a substrate to facilitate the reaction is now considered state of the art in catalysis, yet there still remains a tremendous challenge. Few heterogeneous systems of this sort have been exploited, as the active sites spatially separated within the rigid framework are usually difficult to cooperate. It is now shown that this roadblock can be surpassed. The underlying principle of the strategy presented here is the integration of catalytic components with excellent flexibility and porous heterogeneous catalysts, as demonstrated by the placement of linear ionic polymers in close proximity to surface Lewis acid active sites anchored on the walls of a covalent organic framework (COF). Using the cycloaddition of the epoxides and CO<sub>2</sub> as a model reaction, dramatic activity improvements have been achieved for the composite catalysts in relation to the individual catalytic component. Furthermore, they also clearly outperform the benchmark catalytic systems formed by the combination of the molecular organocatalysts and heterogeneous Lewis acid catalysts, while affording additional recyclability. The extraordinary flexibility and enriched concentration of the catalytically active moieties on linear polymers facilitate the concerted catalysis, thus leading to superior catalytic performance. This work therefore uncovers an entirely new strategy for designing bifunctional catalysts with double-activation behavior and opens a new avenue in the design of multicapable systems that mimic biocatalysis.

Systematic Tuning and Multifunctionalization of Covalent Organic Polymers for Enhanced Carbon Capture

Abstract:Porous covalent polymers are attracting increasing interest in the fields of gas adsorption, gas separation, and catalysis due to their fertile synthetic polymer chemistry, large internal surface areas, and ultrahigh hydrothermal stabilities. While precisely manipulating the porosities of porous organic materials for targeted applications remains challenging, we show how a large degree of diversity can be achieved in covalent organic polymers by incorporating multiple functionalities into a single framework, as is done for crystalline porous materials. Here, we synthesized 17 novel porous covalent organic polymers (COPs) with finely tuned porosities, a wide range of Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface areas of 430-3624 m(2) g(-1), and a broad range of pore volumes of 0.24-3.50 cm(3) g(-1), all achieved by tailoring the length and geometry of building blocks. Furthermore, we are the first to successfully incorporate more than three distinct functional groups into one phase for porous organic materials, which has been previously demonstrated in crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). COPs decorated with multiple functional groups in one phase can lead to enhanced properties that are not simply linear combinations of the pure component properties. For instance, in the dibromobenzene-lined frameworks, the bi- and multifunctionalized COPs exhibit selectivities for carbon dioxide over nitrogen twice as large as any of the singly functionalized COPs. These multifunctionalized frameworks also exhibit a lower parasitic energy cost for carbon capture at typical flue gas conditions than any of the singly functionalized frameworks. Despite the significant improvement, these frameworks do not yet outperform the current state-of-art technology for carbon capture. Nonetheless, the tuning strategy presented here opens up avenues for the design of novel catalysts, the synthesis of functional sensors from these materials, and the improvement in the performance of existing covalent organic polymers by multifunctionalization.

Abstract:The exploration of cost‐effective and efficient catalysts for the transformation of CO2 into chemicals at room temperature and low CO2 pressure is a key challenge. Here, we developed a green synthesis method of porous organic polymer, which was obtained by the scholl coupling reaction via polycondensation of 1,3,5‐triphenylbenzene and 1,10‐phenanthroline at room temperature. The large surface areas was tested with 1074 m2 /g and the excellent CO2 capture was exhibited with 77.26 cm3 /g at 273.15 K /1.00 bar for the polymer. After loading cobalt acetate, we obtained an ultralow Co loading phenanthroline‐based porous organic polymer with very high catalytic efficiency in TOF of 263 h‐1 for the fixation of CO2 to cyclic carbonates at room temperature and atmospheric with free‐solvent, which is over six‐fold than that of a molecular analogue, 1,10‐phenanthroline‐Co(OAc)2 . This work provided a facile, powerful, green, and efficient strategy for designing porous organic polymers as high‐efficient heterogeneous catalysts in the fixation of carbon dioxide.

Abstract:Herein, we show how the spatial environment in the functional pores of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can be manipulated in order to exert control in catalysis. The underlying mechanism of this strategy relies on the placement of linear polymers in the pore channels that are anchored with catalytic species, analogous to outer-sphere residue cooperativity within the active sites of enzymes. This approach benefits from the flexibility and enriched concentration of the functional moieties on the linear polymers, enabling the desired reaction environment in close proximity to the active sites, thereby impacting the reaction outcomes. Specifically, in the representative dehydration of fructose to produce 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, dramatic activity and selectivity improvements have been achieved for the active center of sulfonic acid groups in COFs after encapsulation of polymeric solvent analogues 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone and ionic liquid.

Abstract:The precise microenvironment modulation of ionic sites to promote the catalytic performances of ionic-liquid polymers for CO2 transformation has been highly attractive but rarely attempted. Herein, we reported a strategy to synthesize the triethylenediamine-derived ionic-liquid polymer (PDD-S) featured with branched structure and high site density (4.10 mmol·g−1). In distinct with the conventional synthetic routes, this method involved the pre-grafting and subsequent self-polymerization of ionic monomer, which suppressed the competitive reactions and broke the limitations of precursor selection, while ensuring the high content and even distribution of ionic sites within the polymeric framework. Furthermore, during CO2 cycloaddition with epoxides we showed that these unique structural features allowed the adequate exposure of active sites under the dual effects of steric hindrance and charge repulsion. The PDD-S exhibited noteworthy catalytic performance, with a carbonate yield of 97.3 %, under the moderate conditions (100 °C, 4 h, 1 MPa) in the absence of any metal, co-catalyst, or solvent. Additionally, the desirable reusability, epoxide universality, and structural stability were also attained. The experiments combining with the activation energy and DFT theoretical calculations, attributed the synergistic interplay of tertiary N, quaternary ammonium, and Cl- anions to the acceleration of ring-opening process, thereby promoting the CO2 transformation. The newly developed approach offers one perspective to the controllable fabrication of ionic-liquid polymers for catalytic fixation of CO2.

Abstract:Ambient condition-determined chemical CO2 fixation affords great promise for remitting the pressure of CO2 release. The construction of a microporous environment easily captures CO2 molecules around the reactive sites of the catalyst to reinforce the reaction process. Herein, multi-hydroxyl-containing hyper-crosslinked organic polymers (HCPs-OH-n) are synthesized by the polymerization of 1,4-dichlorobenzyl (DCX) and m-trihydroxybenzene in the monosaccharide form in a Friedel–Crafts alkylation hypercrosslinking process (FCAHP). By tuning the DCX ratio in the FCAHP, the structural properties can be regulated to create a more microporous surface in the HCPs-OH-n; meanwhile, the formed multi-hydroxyl species in the microporous environment could induce the easy interaction between hydroxyls and epoxides by forming a hydrogen bond, which improves the activation of epoxides during the cycloaddition reaction to synthesize the cyclic carbonates at ambient conditions. The structural properties suggest that HCPs-OH-n possess a large surface area with appreciable microporous and mesoporous distribution. As expected, the HCPs-OH-3 bearing the most abundant mesoporosity affords the highest reactivity in the chemical CO2 fixation to cyclic carbonates and is endowed with rational recoverability.

Abstract:Multifunctional catalysts derived from the integration of discrete catalytic partners in a confined space represent an important approach to emulate some of the design philosophies of enzymes. In an effort to design concepts for highly active catalysts for CO2 transformations, we synthesize and contrast the performance of two porous pyridinium frameworks. The activity is found to be significantly amplified by the introduction of the amine group on the ortho position of the pyridinium moieties. The resulting catalyst is capable of highly active and selective cycloaddition of aziridines with CO2 to 5-substituted-2-oxazolidinone, even under ambient conditions (1 bar, 22 degrees C). Its high activity originates from CO2 activation by the pendant amine group in the vicinity of the active species, which facilitates the subsequent catalytic steps.

Abstract:The types and quantities of active sites play a critical role in catalysis. Herein, ZnO nanoparticles encapsulated into N-doped porous carbon has been rationally prepared by the pyrolysis of a metal-organic framework (MOF) followed by a moderate oxidation treatment. The resulting catalyst exhibits excellent activity, selectivity, and recyclability in the CO2 cycloaddtion reactions with epoxides owing to the synergy of multiple sites inherited from the MOF and generated by the oxidation process.

Abstract:Single site catalysts provide a unique platform for mimicking natural enzyme due to their tunable interaction between metal center and coordinated ligand. However, most works have focused on preparing structural and functional models of nature enzyme, with less reports also taking the local chemical environment, i.e., functional/catalytic residues around the active site which is an essential feature of enzymes, into consideration. Herein, we report a Co-centered porphyrinic polymer containing the enzyme-mimic micro-environment, where the linker triazole over CoN4 site enables formation of hydrogen bond with the *COOH intermediate, thus promoting the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. As-prepared catalyst achieves the CO2-to-CO conversion of 5, 788 h−1 turnover frequency value and near unit (∼ 96%) faradaic efficiency at −0.61 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. This strategy will bring new dimension of designing highly active single-site catalysts.

Abstract:Efficient capture of CO2 and its conversion into other high value-added compounds by electrochemical methods is an effective way to reduce excess CO2 in the atmosphere. Porous polymeric materials hold great promise for selective adsorption and electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 due to their high specific surface area, tunable porosity, structural diversity, and chemical stability. Here, we review recent research advances in this field, including design of porous organic polymers (POPs), porous coordination polymers (PCPs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and functional nitrogen-containing polymers for capture and electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. In addition, key issues and prospects for the optimal design of porous polymers for future development are elucidated. This review is expected to shed new light on the development of advanced porous polymer electrocatalysts for efficient CO2 reduction.

Abstract:A catalytic performance is greatly impacted by the microenvironment surrounding the catalytic centers. However, efforts to modify the microenvironment are primarily directed towards the first coordination spheres, while controlling the secondary coordina-tion spheres is entirely restricted. In this work, a series of porphyrin-based covalent organic frame-works (COFs) with distinct linkage were rationally designed to investigate the structure-property relationship between the secondary coordination spheres of catalytic centers and CO2 photoreduction. The secondary coordination spheres of COFs could be changed readily by manipulating the organic link-age. In photocatalytic CO2 reduction, the COF with beta-ketoenamine as the linkage (NiPor-BDOB) exhib-ited superior activity, selectivity, and stability over its imine-linked counterpart (NiPor-BDA). Experiments and theoretical calculations indicated that the dis-tinct secondary coordination sphere resulted in an electronic density change of Ni centers, leading to enhanced photocatalytic performances. This study highlights the significance of controlling the secondary coordination sphere around the active site.

Abstract:Abstract Photocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to valuable products is one of the promising approaches to mitigate climate change and provide chemical fuels. The structural design of photocatalysts has been therefore directed to enhancing the CO 2 conversion efficiency and selectivity. Herein, we report that the metalated porous polycarbazoles, made by facile one‐pot oxidative polymerization and successive transition metal impregnation, can effectively convert CO 2 into carbon monoxide (CO) with high selectivity under visible light irradiation. The high porosity of the porous polycarbazoles provides enhanced CO 2 adsorption and the incorporated metals facilitate the CO 2 activation. The type of metal ions influences the CO selectivity by altering surface reaction kinetics for CO 2 reduction. Our approach proves that the photocatalytic CO 2 reduction ability and selectivity of porous conjugated polymers can be improved by decorating functional metal species to modulate the adsorption and activation behavior of CO 2 molecules.

Abstract:The cross-coupling reaction of 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene with terephthaloyl chloride gives a novel ynone-linked porous organic polymer. Tethering alkyl amine species on the polymer induces chemisorption of CO2 as revealed by the studies of ex situ infrared spectroscopy. By tuning the amine loading content on the polymer, relatively high CO2 adsorption capacities, high CO2-over-N2 selectivity, and moderate isosteric heat (Qst) of adsorption of CO2 can be achieved. Such amine-modified polymers with balanced physisorption and chemisorption of CO2 are ideal sorbents for post-combustion capture of CO2 offering both high separation and high energy efficiencies.

Abstract:Because CO2 is the main greenhouse gas, its capture and catalytic conversion are thought to be significant issues to be solved at the current time. Given the thermodynamically stable and inert nature of CO2, it is highly desirable to develop advanced catalysts to facilitate the transformation of CO2 to other high-value-added chemicals under mild conditions. Within this regard, porous organic polymers (POPs), featuring large surface areas, high thermal stabilities, diverse building blocks, and tunable porous structures, are an ideal platform for the construction of heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 conversion. Incorporating active sites that are capable of activating CO2 and/or substrates into the frameworks of POPs can facilitate CO2 conversion. In this Review, the most recent advances in the design and synthesis of POP-based heterogeneous catalysts for the conversion of CO2 are summarized. We mainly focus on the synthetic strategies researchers have used for incorporating active sites into POP frameworks to prepare heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 conversion, including N-doping, metalation, and ionic functionalization. Problems remaining to be addressed in this field are analyzed, and future directions are outlined.

Coordinate Activation in Heterogeneous Carbon Dioxide Reduction on Co-based Molecular Catalysts

Abstract:As CO2 coordination with the metal sites in molecular catalysts represents an effective means to CO2 activation, it is important to develop molecular catalysts with high ability of CO2 coordination to enhance their catalytic performance in CO2 electroreduction. Herein, we investigated the coordinate activation of CO2 with Co-based molecular catalysts by manipulating their ligand structures. During CO2 electroreduction, the current density of Co-salophen for CO was -16.0 mA cm(-2) at - 0.75 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs RHE), which was 7.6 times of that ( - 2.1 mA cm(-2)) of Co-salen. In addition, the Faradaic efficiency (FE) of Co-salophen for CO reached 75 % at - 0.70 V vs RHE, whereas the FE of Co-salen for CO production was 19 %. In-situ experiments and mechanistic studies revealed that both Co-salophen and Co-salen adopted a side-on coordination of CO2 with Co sites. Moreover, the bonding between CO2 and Co sites was strengthened in Co-salophen, resulting in the enhanced activity of Co-salophen.
Porous Organic Polymers with Diverse Quaternary Phosphonium Units for Chemical Fixation of CO2 with Low Concentration

Abstract:Low concentration (normal less than 15%) of CO2 is mainly resulted from emission of industrial processes, and its transformation into value-added chemicals over heterogeneous catalysts is of great significance for sustainable reduction of CO2 accumulation. Herein, we reported a series of porous organic polymers (POPs) with diverse quaternary phosphonium units constructed from phosphonium reaction of halogen-functionalized porous divinylbenzene polymers with phosphines. These POPs have large surface areas and hierarchical porosity, exhibiting excellent catalytic properties in cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epoxides even under the co-catalyst free and mild conditions. Structural comparison of the catalysts reveals that the catalytic activities increase with the steric hindrance of the quaternary phosphonium units in the catalysts. For example, catalytic activity of the porous organic polymer with tricyclohexyl phosphonium chloride unit (POP-BnCl-CP) was higher than that of porous organic polymers with tributyl phosphonium chloride (POP-BnCl-BP) and triphenyl phosphonium chloride (POP-BnCl-PP) units. Particularly, this difference was more obvious when low concentration of CO2 was employed in the reaction. In this case, the POP-BnCl-CP has the CO2 conversion at 94.3% with product selectivity at 99.0%, while the POP-BnCl-BP and POP-BnCl-PP have relatively low conversion and selectivity (67.6% and 99.0% for POP-BnCl-BP and 55.2% and 99.0% for POP-BnCl-PP). The high activity and excellent selectivity of the POP-BnCl-BP catalyst in the absence of any co-catalyst under mild conditions should be important for chemical fixation of CO2 with low concentration into value-added chemicals in the future.
