Abstract:Manipulation of the electronic properties of 2D materials with molecular adsorption has been widely reported in the past decade. However, the impact of adsorption of molecules on the magnetism of intrinsic 2D magnets is not yet sufficiently understood. Inspired by the recent discovery of intrinsic 2D ferromagnetism in atomically thin Cr2Ge2Te6 and CrI3 crystals, in this investigation, the adsorption of gas molecules including CO, CO2, H2O, N-2, NH3, NO, NO2, O-2 and SO2 on the basal plane of a Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT) monolayer was systematically investigated by density functional theory. The structures, energy, charge transfer, work function, and electronic and magnetic properties of the gas molecule adsorbed Cr2Ge2Te6 monolayers were explored. It has been found that the adsorption of gas molecules significantly influences the electronic and magnetic properties of a CGT sheet. It was observed that the adsorption of molecules could effectively enhance the ferromagnetism and Curie temperature (T-C) of the CGT sheet. Notably, a remarkable enhancement of ferromagnetism and T-C by 38% and 32% was achieved by the adsorption of NO and NO2, respectively. Moreover, NO2 adsorbed CGT exhibits a semiconductor-to-metal transition. The enhanced ferromagnetism and tunable electronic structure could be ascribed to the considerable charge transfer as well as to the alignment of the frontier molecular orbital. The outcome of this study reveals not only exciting insights into the environmental effect on 2D magnets but also provides a new candidate as a NO2 gas sensor.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic half-metals hold tremendous potential for use in nanoelectronics and spintronic devices. However, their experimental realization remains a big challenge. In this article, we study electron- and hole-doping effects on a 2D Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT) monolayer via performing first-principles calculations to investigate its electronic and magnetic properties. Electron-doping has tremendous effects both on the electronic and the magnetic properties. The results show that electron-doping not only induces half-metallicity but it also enhances magnetism in the CGT monolayer. Furthermore, it greatly increases the ferromagnetic stability of the CGT layer. In addition, we manipulated the electron-doping effects via the adsorption of alkali and alkaline-earth metals. The alkali metals act like dopants. Due to charge-transfer, the Fermi level is pushed up, allowing the spin-up channel to conduct while the spin-down channel remains insulating. The half-metallicity is robust, as it does not depend on the adatom concentration. However, the adsorption energy gets reduce with an increase in the concentration of adatoms. In this scenario, the adsorbates tend to repel each other in order to avoid agglomeration, thus leading to a more stable system configuration. More importantly, the local magnetic moment is enhanced because adsorption increases the magnetism. In addition, hydrogen adsorption modifies the band gap at different concentrations but it reduces the magnetic moment of the CGT monolayer.

Abstract:Recently, two-dimensional materials are widely concerned because of their novel physical properties. Cr2Ge2Te6(CGT) has been studied extensively due to its intrinsic ferromagnetism and ferromagnetic order. In this investigation, the electronic and magnetic performances of organic molecules (TCNE, TCNQ and TTF) adsorbed on CGT monolayer were studied based on the first-principles calculations systematically. The results demonstrate that the CGT presents pronounced tunable electronic and magnetic properties by the adsorption of these macromolecules. Furthermore, the Curie temperature of CGT monolayer can be enhanced significantly by the TTF adsorption. This work can provide a magnetic regulation method for CGT and explore the promising applications of the CGT for spin devices.
Two-dimensional half-metallicity in transition metal atoms decorated Cr2Ge2Te6

Abstract:As one of the first experimentally found and naturally stable two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic materials, the monolayer Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 has garnered great interest due to its potential hires in electronics and spintronics. Yet, the Curie temperature of monolayer Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 is lower than the ambient temperature, severely restricting the creation of valuable devices. Using the first-principle calculations, we explored how the adsorption of 3 d transition metals affects the electronic and magnetic properties of the monolayer Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 (from Sc to Zn). Our findings indicate that depending on the 3 d transition metals to be adsorbed, the electronic properties of the Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 adsorption system may be adjusted from semiconductor to metal/half-metal. We found that the adsorption of Ti and Fe leads to a transformation from semiconductor to metal. While in Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 @Sc, V, Co, Ni, and Cu, the absorption realizes the changes from semiconductor to half metal. Moreover, adsorption may modify the magnetic moment and Curie temperature of the adsorbed system to enhance the ferromagnetic stability of the monolayer Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 . Furthermore, we are able to modulate the half-metallic of Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 @Mn by means of electric fields. Hence, adsorption is a viable method for modulating the ferromagnetic half-metallic of 2D ferromagnets, paving the door for the future development of nano-electronic and spintronic devices with enhanced performance for 2D ferromagnetic materials.

Giant Contribution of the Ligand States to the Magnetic Properties of the Cr2Ge2Te6 Monolayer

Abstract:The magnetic properties of the Cr2Ge2Te6 monolayer - an important two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic (FM) material - are systematically investigated on the basis of ab initio electronic structure calculations within density functional theory (DFT). For these purposes we construct a minimal tight-binding model in the basis of maximally localized Wannier functions, which describes the behavior of the magnetic Cr 3d, Ge 4p, and Te 5p electrons. This model allows us to rationalize the results of conventional DFT calculations at the microscopic level. We explore the abilities of different techniques, including the Green's function perturbation theory and constraint calculations with an external magnetic field, for the analysis of magnetic interactions, that allow us to decompose these interactions in terms of partial contributions coming from different atomic sites. We argue that, although the magnetism of Cr2Ge2Te6 originates from the Hund's rule effects in the partially filled Cr 3d shell, the contributions of the ligand - and particularly Te 5p - states are crucially important and have a significant effect on the behavior of isotropic exchange interactions, magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE), and antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions induced by an electric field. In particular, the Te 5p states increase dramatically the FM coupling and DM interactions between the Cr spins. They are also largely responsible for the behavior of MAE, manifesting themselves in non-Heisenberg type effects, which go beyond the scopes of the conventional Mermin-Wagner theorem for the analysis of 2D magnetism of Cr2Ge2Te6.

Abstract:Magnetism in the two-dimensional limit has become an intriguing topic for exploring new physical phenomena and potential applications. Especially, the two-dimensional magnetism is often associated with novel intrinsic spin fluctuations and versatile electronic structures, which provides vast opportunities in 2D material research. However, it is still challenging to verify candidate materials hosting two-dimensional magnetism, since the prototype systems have to be realized by using mechanical exfoliation or atomic layer deposition. Here, an alternative manipulation of two-dimensional magnetic properties via electrochemical intercalation of organic molecules is reported. Using tetrabutyl ammonium (TBA+), we synthesized a (TBA)Cr2Ge2Te6 hybrid superlattice with metallic behavior, and the Curie temperature is significantly increased from 67 K in pristine Cr2Ge2Te6 to 208 K in (TBA)Cr2Ge2Te6. Moreover, the magnetic easy axis changes from the ⟨001⟩ direction in Cr2Ge2Te6 to the ab-plane in (TBA)Cr2Ge2Te6. Theoretical calculations indicate that the drastic increase of the Curie temperature can be attributed to the change of magnetic coupling from a weak superexchange interaction in pristine Cr2Ge2Te6 to a strong double-exchange interaction in (TBA)Cr2Ge2Te6. These findings are the first demonstration of manipulation of magnetism in magnetic van der Waals materials by means of intercalating organic ions, which can serve as a convenient and efficient approach to explore versatile magnetic and electronic properties in van der Waals crystals.
Enhancing the Curie Temperature in Cr2Ge2Te6 via Charge Doping: A First-Principles Study

Abstract:In this work, we explore the impacts of charge doping on the magnetism of a Cr2Ge2Te6 monolayer using first-principles calculations. Our results reveal that doping with 0.3 electrons per unit cell can enhance the ferromagnetic exchange constant in a Cr2Ge2Te6 monolayer from 6.874 meV to 10.202 meV, which is accompanied by an increase in the Curie temperature from ~85 K to ~123 K. The enhanced ratio of the Curie temperature is up to 44.96%, even higher than that caused by surface functionalization on monolayer Cr2Ge2Te6, manifesting the effectiveness of charge doping by improving the magnetic stability of 2D magnets. This remarkable enhancement in the ferromagnetic exchange constant and Curie temperature can be attributed to the increase in the magnetic moment on the Te atom, enlarged Cr-Te-Cr bond angle, reduced Cr-Te distance, and the significant increase in super-exchange coupling between Cr and Te atoms. These results demonstrate that charge doping is a promising route to improve the magnetic stability of 2D magnets, which is beneficial to overcome the obstacles in the application of 2D magnets in spintronics.

Abstract:We investigate the temperature-dependent electronic structure of the van der Waals ferromagnet, CrGeTe$_3$. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we identify atomic- and orbital-specific band shifts upon cooling through ${T_\mathrm{C}}$. From these, together with x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements, we identify the states created by a covalent bond between the Te ${5p}$ and the Cr ${e_g}$ orbitals as the primary driver of the ferromagnetic ordering in this system, while it is the Cr ${t_{2g}}$ states that carry the majority of the spin moment. The ${t_{2g}}$ states furthermore exhibit a marked bandwidth increase and a remarkable lifetime enhancement upon entering the ordered phase, pointing to a delicate interplay between localized and itinerant states in this family of layered ferromagnets.

Abstract:AbstractThe discovery of 2D van der Waals XY ferromagnets is a vital task to access excellent topological spin textures, yet remains a longstanding challenge due to low critical temperatures (TC) and weak in‐plane magnetic anisotropy. Here, a novel 2D ferromagnetic clusterphene, (Cr3As2)2Cp3 (Cp = cyclopentadienyl), by using Cr3As2Cp3 cluster self‐assembly with Cp as linker is proposed. Via first‐principles calculations, it is demonstrated that an enhanced ferromagnetic superexchange interaction between the d orbital is achieved through a salient overlap onto the molecular frontier orbitals of the Cp ligand, producing a room‐temperature TC. The (Cr3As2)2Cp3 clusterphene characterizes an ideal XY ferromagnet and a giant magneto band‐structure (GMB) effect. Functional groups and element modifications are also introduced to effectively manipulate the magnetic anisotropy and the GMB effect. The results showcase that 2D magnetic cluster‐assembled clusterphenes fuel a wide range of possibilities for exploring XY magnetism in reduced dimensions.

Abstract:Exchange-coupled interfaces are pivotal in exploiting two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetism. Due to the extraordinary correlations among charge, spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom, layered magnetic transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) bode well for exotic topological phenomena. Here we report the realization of wafer-scale Cr2Te3 down to monolayer (ML) on insulating SrTiO3(111) and/or Al2O3(001) substrates using molecular beam epitaxy. Robust ferromagnetism persists in the 2D limit. In particular, the Curie temperature TC of 2 ML Cr2Te3 increases from 100 K to ~ 120 K when proximitized to topological insulator (TI) (Bi,Sb)2Te3, with substantially boosted magnetization as observed via polarized neutron reflectometry. Our experiments and theory strongly indicate that the Bloembergen-Rowland interaction is likely universal underlying TC enhancement in TI-coupled magnetic heterostructures. Abstract:CrGeTe is an intrinsic ferromagnetic semiconductor with van der Waals type layered structure, thus represents a promising material for novel electronic and spintronic devices. Here we combine scanning tunneling microscopy and first-principles calculations to investigate the electronic structure of CrGeTe. Tunneling spectroscopy reveals a surprising large energy level shift and change of energy gap size across the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition, as well as a peculiar double-peak electronic state on the Cr-site defect. These features can be quantitatively explained by density functional theory calculations, which uncover a close relationship between the electronic structure and magnetic order. These findings shed important new lights on the microscopic electronic structure and origin of magnetic order in CrGeTe.
Critical Behavior of the Single-Crystalline Van Der Waals Bonded Ferromagnet Cr2Ge2Te6

Abstract:Layered Cr2Ge2Te6 is a promising two-dimensional (2D) material for van der Waals bonded ferromagnetic devices since its ferromagnetism can be maintained upon exfoliating the bulk down to a few layers. However, the magnetic interaction properties and phase-transition type of this system remain controversial. In this work, we systematically study the magnetic properties and critical behavior of Cr2Ge2Te6 single crystal. The angle dependence of magnetization indicates that Cr2Ge2Te6 has a weak magnetic anisotropy along the c axis but no magnetic anisotropy in the ab plane. Based on the field-dependent magnetic entropy change [Delta S-M(T, H)], the critical exponents of beta = 0.177(9), gamma = 1.746(8), and delta = 10.869(5) are obtained around T-c = 66.4(3) K. With these critical exponents, the M(T, H) and Delta S-M(T, H) curves follow the universality scaling laws, implying their high reliability and self consistency. The determined critical exponents are close to the 2D-Ising model with spatial dimensionality d = 2 and spin dimensionality n = 1. These results suggest that for 2D-Ising-like Cr2Ge2Te6, the weak magnetic anisotropy is crucial for the stabilization of the long-range ferromagnetic ordering, which is also consistent with the prediction of renormalized spin wave theory.

Abstract:The discovery of magnetism in 2D materials offers new opportunities for exploring novel quantum states and developing spintronic devices. In this work, using field-effect transistors with solid ion conductors as the gate dielectric (SIC-FETs), we have observed a significant enhancement of ferromagnetism associated with magnetic easy-axis switching in few-layered Cr2Ge2Te6. The easy axis of the magnetization, inferred from the anisotropic magnetoresistance, can be uniformly tuned from the out-of-plane direction to an in-plane direction by electric field in the few-layered Cr2Ge2Te6. Additionally, the Curie temperature, obtained from both the Hall resistance and magnetoresistance measurements, increases from 65 to 180 K in the few-layered sample by electric gating. Moreover, the surface of the sample is fully exposed in the SIC-FET device configuration, making further heterostructure-engineering possible. This work offers an excellent platform for realizing electrically controlled quantum phenomena in a single device.

Abstract:To broaden the scope of van der Waals 2D magnets, we report the synthesis and magnetism of covalent 2D magnetic Cr2Te3 with a thickness down to one-unit-cell. The 2D Cr2Te3 crystals exhibit robust ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature of 180 K, a large perpendicular anisotropy of 7 × 105 J m−3, and a high coercivity of ∼4.6 kG at 20 K. First principles calculations further show a transition from canted to collinear ferromagnetism, a transition from perpendicular to in-plane anisotropy, and emergent half-metallic behavior in atomically-thin Cr2Te3, suggesting its potential application for injecting carriers with high spin polarization into spintronic devices.
Gate-tunable room-temperature ferromagnetism in two-dimensional Fe3GeTe2

Abstract:Materials research has driven the development of modern nano-electronic devices. In particular, research in magnetic thin films has revolutionized the development of spintronic devices1,2 because identifying new magnetic materials is key to better device performance and design. Van der Waals crystals retain their chemical stability and structural integrity down to the monolayer and, being atomically thin, are readily tuned by various kinds of gate modulation3,4. Recent experiments have demonstrated that it is possible to obtain two-dimensional ferromagnetic order in insulating Cr2Ge2Te6 (ref. 5) and CrI3 (ref. 6) at low temperatures. Here we develop a device fabrication technique and isolate monolayers from the layered metallic magnet Fe3GeTe2 to study magnetotransport. We find that the itinerant ferromagnetism persists in Fe3GeTe2 down to the monolayer with an out-of-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The ferromagnetic transition temperature, Tc, is suppressed relative to the bulk Tc of 205 kelvin in pristine Fe3GeTe2 thin flakes. An ionic gate, however, raises Tc to room temperature, much higher than the bulk Tc. The gate-tunable room-temperature ferromagnetism in two-dimensional Fe3GeTe2 opens up opportunities for potential voltage-controlled magnetoelectronics7–11 based on atomically thin van der Waals crystals.

Abstract:Recently, as a new representative of Heisenberg's two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic materials, 2D Cr2Ge2Te6(CGT), has attracted much attention due to its intrinsic ferromagnetism. Unfortunately, the Curie temperature (TC) of CGT monolayer is only 22 K, which greatly hampers the development of the applications based on the CGT materials. Herein, by means of density functional theory computations, we explored the electronic and magnetic properties of CGT monolayer under the applied strain. It is demonstrated that the band gap of CGT monolayer can be remarkably modulated by applying the tensile strain, which first increases and then decreases with the increase of tensile strain. In addition, the strain can increase the Curie temperature and magnetic moment, and thus largely enhance the ferromagnetism of CGT monolayer. Notably, the obvious enhancement ofTCby 191% can be achieved at 10% strain. These results demonstrate that strain engineering can not only tune the electronic properties, but also provide a promising avenue to improve the ferromagnetism of CGT monolayer. Tuning magnetic exchange interactions in 2D magnets: the case of CrGeX$_3$ (X = Se, Te) and Janus Cr$_2$Ge$_2$(Se,Te)$_3$ monolayers

Abstract:We present a computational study to explore the potential of different experimental approaches to tune the magnetic interactions in two-dimensional van der Waals magnets. We selected CrGeSe$_3$, CrGeTe$_3$, and Janus Cr$_2$Ge$_2$(Se,Te)$_3$ monolayers as case studies and calculated the full exchange tensors among all relevant atomic pairs and analyze their dependence on different external parameters, such as biaxial and uniaxial strain, as well as gate voltage. We pay special attention to interactions that emerge or vanish due to changes of the symmetry of the system. We find that biaxial and uniaxial strains significantly modify isotropic exchange couplings, which can lead to a transition from a ferromagnetic to an antiferromagnetic phase, while a gate voltage induces Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, forming a vortex pattern whose chirality is determined by the sign of the electric field. The electric dipole moment of the Janus material is large, raising the possibility of multiferroic behaviour. The polarizability is similar for the three compounds.

Abstract:The discovery of magnetism in 2D materials offers new opportunities for exploring novel quantum states and developing spintronic devices. In this work, using field‐effect transistors with solid ion conductors as the gate dielectric (SIC‐FETs), we have observed a significant enhancement of ferromagnetism associated with magnetic easy‐axis switching in few‐layered Cr2Ge2Te6. The easy axis of the magnetization, inferred from the anisotropic magnetoresistance, can be uniformly tuned from the out‐of‐plane direction to an in‐plane direction by electric field in the few‐layered Cr2Ge2Te6. Additionally, the Curie temperature, obtained from both the Hall resistance and magnetoresistance measurements, increases from 65 to 180 K in the few‐layered sample by electric gating. Moreover, the surface of the sample is fully exposed in the SIC‐FET device configuration, making further heterostructure‐engineering possible. This work offers an excellent platform for realizing electrically controlled quantum phenomena in a single device.
Adsorption behavior of CO, CO2, H2, H2O, NO, and O2 on pristine and defective 2D monolayer ferromagnetic Fe3GeTe2

Abstract:Recently, 2D ferromagnets have emerged as a hot research topic, especially after the exfoliation of monolayer ferromagnetic Fe3GeTe2 from its bulk structure (Nature 2018, 563, 94; Nat. Mater. 2018, 17, 778). In this work, we systematically report the adsorption behavior of CO, CO2, H2, H2O, NO, and O2 on the pristine and Te-deficient Fe3GeTe2 (FGT and d-FGT) monolayer using hybrid density functional theory. We find that the toxic gas molecules (CO and NO) and O2 molecular are chemically anchored at the surface of the pristine FGT, while the H2O, CO2, and H2 are physically associated with FGT. Interestingly, the introduction of Te deficiency would significantly enhance the covalent interactions between the substrate and the gas molecules, especially for CO2 and H2O, whose adsorption type has evolved from physisorption to chemisorption. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity of (d-)FGT to gas molecules is found to be stronger than that of the two well-studied 2D materials: MoS2 and MXenes. Meanwhile, the adsorption changes the electronic structure of (d-)FGT but does not change the metallicity of FGT. This work provides a valuable reference for the application of 2D metallic ferromagnetic materials in the field of catalysis, sensors, gas storage, and environmental remediation.
