Abstract:Photoinduced synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials has attracted great attention recently. Herein, we demonstrate the facile photoinduced synthesis of Bi2O3 nanotubes with a uniform pore size of about 2.2 nm at room temperature. Ultraviolet irradiation promoted the crystallization of amorphous bismuth hydroxide into bismuth oxide. The formation of this special tubular morphology of -Bi2O3 was attributed to the small size of the bismuth hydroxide precursor and oriented attachment mechanism. Abstract:TiO2 nanotubes were prepared through the reaction of TiO2 power in high-concentration NaOH under hydrothermal conditions. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and ultraviolet visible spectrum (UV-Vis) were adopted to analyze as-prepared TiO2 nanotubes. The influence of rutile content in TiO2 powder on the structure and properties of TiO2 nanotube was investigated. The results show that pure rutile TiO2 powder is not conducive to the formation of TiO2 nanotubes, and the mixed crystal TiO2 nanotubes with uniform morphology can be prepared by TiO2 powder with anatase-rutile mixed crystal structure. With the increase of rutile content in the TiO2 powder, the rutile phase increases in as-prepared samples, and the photocatalytic activities first increase, and then decrease. The mixed crystal TiO2 nanotubes with anatase as dominant phase exhibit high photocatalytic decomposition activity to the methyl orange.

Abstract:A new method has been developed to synthesize barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution under ambient conditions at room temperature. The as-prepared BaTiO3 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution TEM, and selected area electron diffraction. On the basis of the characterizations, it was found that the particle size could be easily tuned by adjusting the experimental parameters, such as the solvent component and reaction time. The basicity of the organic solvent was considered to play an important role in the room-temperature synthesis and the solvent molecules had a strong influence on the crystal growth of BaTiO3 nanoparticles. The BaTiO3 nanoparticles obtained were well dispersed and possessed a cubic perovskite structure at room temperature.

Abstract:Bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) nanofibers have been successfully prepared by a photochemical method from an aqueous solution of bismuth nitrate (Bi(NO3)3) and thioacetamide (TAA) in the presence of complexing agents of nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) at room temperature. It was found that the irradiation time, the pH of the solution, and the species of complexing agents play important roles in the morphology control of the bismuth sulfate (Bi2S3) nanomaterials. The nanofibers were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron diffraction (ED), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), and UV-Visible absorption spectra (UV-Vis). Probable mechanisms for the photochemical formation of Bi2S3 nanofibers in aqueous solutions are proposed. The photochemical method is a convenient approach for controlling the shape for other metal sulfide semiconductor nanocrystals.

Abstract:In this work, hollow BiFeO3 nanotubes with ultrathin wall thickness were successfully synthesized via a template approach by using anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) as the template. The structure, morphology, magnetic properties and photocatalytic activity of the hollow BiFeO3 nanotubes were characterized in detail. The results showed that the as-prepared BiFeO3 nanotubes exhibited hollow tubular structure with external diameter of ∼50 nm and wall thickness of 5 nm, respectively. In addition, enhanced magnetic properties with saturation magnetization (Ms) value of 1.74 emu·g−1, low photoluminescence (PL) intensity and large surface-to-volume ratio were observed. Compared to the BiFeO3 nanofibres and BiFeO3 nanoparticles, the BiFeO3 nanotubes exhibited the best photocatalytic activity and stability to the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. According to the analysis of the photocatalytic mechanism, the enhanced photocatalytic activity can be ascribed to the unique one-dimensional hollow nanotubular structure with ultrathin wall thickness and enhanced magnetic properties.

Abstract:Ternary bismuth oxyhalide crystalline nanobelts (such as Bi24O31Br10, Bi3O4Br, Bi12O17Br2, BiOCI, and Bi24O31Cl10) and nanotubes (such as Bi24O31Br10) have been synthesized by using convenient hydrothermal methods. The composition and morphologies of the bismuth oxyhalides could be controlled by adjusting some growth parameters, including reaction pH, time, and temperature. All the nanostructures were characterized by using various methods including X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution TEM, electron diffraction, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The possible reaction mechanism and growth of the crystals are discussed based on the experimental results.

Abstract:Bismuth oxyhalide (Bi-O-X) is a group of layered semiconductors, which are promising candidates for photocatalysis due to their inherent internal electric field and adjustable band gap through composition and morphology control. Bismuth-rich Bi-O-X has improved stability and advantageous band structure compared to those of Bi-O-X and hence has attracted an increasing amount of research interest. In this work, ultrathin nanotubes of Bi5O7I with a 5 nm diameter and a 1 nm wall are obtained through a hydrothermal method while the phase and morphology of the products are regulated by the pH values and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) concentration of the reaction system, of which the products can be tuned from BiOI nanosheets to Bi5O7I nanobelts and ultrathin Bi5O7I nanotubes. PVP and pH control is important to the formation of the nanotubes as formation occurs via a PVP-guided oriented attachment from primary nanoparticles of Bi5O7I. The poorly crystalline and porous structure of the resultant bismuth-rich ultrathin nanotubes not only exposes more surface atoms but also exhibits a highly reduced conduction band minimum. The resultant band gap of 2.39 eV (as compared to 3.20 eV for the nanobelts) arises from the undercoordinated bismuth centers brought about by the rich oxygen vacancies in the nanotubes. The largely reduced band gap effectively enhances visible-light absorption, while the short charge-diffusion length of the nanotubes further reduces the charge-carrier loss in recombination.

Abstract:The precise synthetic control of yttrium oxide (Y2O3) nanotube morphology is essential for their practical application. A comprehensive investigation into the growth mechanisms of these nanotubes is crucial for directing the regulation of their morphology. In this study, Y2O3 nanotubes were successfully synthesized. The morphological evolution was characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED), which elucidated the growth mechanism underlying the transformation from Y4O(OH)9(NO3) nanosheets to nanotubes. The initiation of this process involves lattice distortions within the nanosheets, resulting in a spontaneous curling phenomenon driven by the minimization of surface energy. The presence of NaOH in the reaction milieu initiates a topotactic transformation, resulting in the conversion of the Y4O(OH)9(NO3) nanosheets into Y(OH)3 nanotubes. Subsequent calcination induces a phase transition from hexagonal Y(OH)3 to cubic Y2O3 phases, while preserving the tubular structure. These findings offer strategic insights into the controlled synthesis of nanomaterials.

Abstract:An oxidative metal vapor transport deposition technique is used for the Synthesis of ultrathin beta-Bi2O3 nanowires, which exploits spatial-temporal separation of Bi evaporation, vapor transport, droplet formation, and oxidative nucleation and growth. The nanowires grow via a self-catalyzed, reaction-coupled vapor-liquid-solid route, with potential for the general synthesis of metal oxide nanowires.

Abstract:NaNbO3 nanowires and cubes were synthesized by means of a facile surfactant-assisted hydrothermal process. The NaNbO3 nanowires were single-crystalline and showed uniform size with a diameter of about 100 nanometers in width and length of up to several tens of micrometers in length. The NaNbO3 cubes displayed edges of several hundred nanometers. Meanwhile, the possible growth mechanism of NaNbO3 nanowires was proposed. In addition, the photocatalytic activities of the NaNbO3 samples were evaluated for the H-2 evolution from CH3OH/H2O solution under UV light irradiation. Compared with the cubes-NaNbO3 and a NaNbO3 sample prepared by solid state reaction method, NaNbO3 nanowires showed a much higher photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Bi₂Te₃ nanotubes are synthesized by a facile two-step hydrothermal method. Te nanotubes are prepared firstly and then used as a template to produce Bi₂Te₃ nanotubes. The structure and morphology of the synthesized nanotubes are characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope. The synthesized Bi₂Te₃ nanotubes are several microns in length and about 400 nm in diameter. The growth process is investigated in detail under different experimental conditions. The formation mechanism of Bi₂Te₃ nanotubes from the Te nanotube template is proposed and discussed. Electrical property of single Bi₂Te₃ nanotube is investigated. The synthesis of smooth Bi₂Te₃ nanotubes opens up the opportunities of investigating novel physical phenomena of topological insulators with two independent surfaces.

Abstract:Bismuth tungstate with different structures and morphologies show different properties. The structure and morphology have been proven to be critical factors to tune the electronic properties to influence photocatalytic performance. Notably, nano-structured bismuth tungstate were found to exhibit high activity in photocatalytic degradation process. Controllable fabrication on nano structures with desired morphology is indispensable to achieve the related properties well. However, a review that declare the correlation between the property and the fabrication, structure and morphology of bismuth tungstate is still absent. Therefore, we firstly summarize a series of recent fabrication methods for various dimensional nano structures of bismuth tungstate. Then the modification of nano-structured BWO to improve the photocatalytic performance are presented, including morphological manipulation, doping or substitution, solid solution fabrication, and compound formation. The mechanism of photocatalytic oxidation and reduction process over nano-structured bismuth tungstate is also explored, especially the role of radical species. Additionally, advanced environmental application are summarized. Finally, unresolved challenges and potential applications of nano-structured bismuth tungstate are presented for future research directions.

Abstract:In this paper, CoO, Co3O4, Ni(OH)2, and Mg(OH)2 nanotubes were synthesized by solvothermal treatment of corresponding colloidal hydroxide. These nanotubes were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). According to the time-dependent morphology evolution, it is likely that the growth is governed by a solution−solid process. Advantages of this method include that it is a simple and general process without the need for a catalyst, surfactant, or template, which makes it low cost, and that the raw materials are readily available. On the basis of the above results, other metal hydroxides with layered structure are therefore potentially capable of forming nanotubes.

Abstract:Inorganic nanotubes with unique and well-defined porous structures show promising applications in diverse functional materials. However, it remains a challenge to fabricate inorganic nanotubes with precise length controllability. Herein, we report the synthesis of block copolymers consisting of a crystalline π-conjugated oligo(p-phenylenevinylene) (OPV) block, a hydrophilic poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) segment and a photo-cleavable o-nitrobenzyl (ONB) junction. By taking advantage of crystallinity of OPV segment, self-seeding approach of living crystallization-driven self-assembly was employed to generate uniform fiber-like micelles composed of an OPV core and a P2VP corona. The P2VP corona was then used to host the formation of silica, titania and Pt(0)-embedded silica shell. After the photo-cleavable OBN junctions were broken under light irradiation, the OPV core can be removed in a good solvent for OPV segments to give silica, titania and Pt(0)-embedded silica nanotubes. Significantly, the Pt(0)-embedded silica nanotubes exhibited much higher catalytic activity toward the reduction of p-nitroaniline than Pt(0)-embedded silica nanofibers with the same Pt content, probably owing to the presence of porous channel for nanotubes. This work opens a new avenue to fabricate inorganic nanotubes of controlled length.
