Abstract:A novel system configuration for optical generation of microwave/millimeter-wave (mm-wave), which is realized through Brillouin-Erbium fiber laser (BEFL), is investigated. The microwave/mm-wave is generated by the mixing of the nth-order Stokes wave and the pump wave on the high-speed photodetector. The nth-order Stokes wave is generated in the BEFL and filtered out by fiber Bragg grating. Abstract:We demonstrate a multi-wavelength Brillouin-erbium fiber laser (BEFL) with narrow linewidth and tunable wavelength interval using dual-wavelength Brillouin pumping. The generation of multi-wavelength output in BEFL is based on the combination of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in a fiber cavity. The tunable wavelength interval is determined by the artificially controlled wavelength interval of the pumping lasers. The BEFL could compress a 1 MHz pump laser to a 340 Hz Brillouin Stokes laser, which proves the BEFL has excellent capability of linewidth compression. An erbium-doped fiber pumped by 980 nm laser is inserted into the cavity to further amplify the Brillouin laser. The wideband multi-wavelength BEFL covering over 50 nm is successfully generated when the 980 nm pump power is 400 mW. These features of multi-wavelength BEFL provide an effective method for optical communication systems and optical fiber sensing.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel dual-wavelength wide-spectrum erbium-doped fiber ring laser (EDFRL) for optical fiber sensing system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The output of EDFRL is theoretically simulated and classified depending on the theoretical analysis of laser threshold condition into “excited state” and “nonexcited state”. The influence of pump wavelength, fiber laser configuration, EDF length and output coupling ratio of EDFRL is discussed. The EDFRL pumped at 1480 nm wavelength and backward-pumped mode could achieve the stable maximum wide-spectrum output power. The output power fluctuation is lower than 0.06 dB and the center wavelengths shift is less than 0.01 nm. The practicability of EDFRL in a hybrid M-Z and Sagnac interferometer optical fiber sensing system is demonstrated through the comparison of SLD and EDFRL. Consequently, the EDFRL proposed in this study is expected to replace the traditional SLD in the optical fiber interferometric sensing system at a lower cost.

Abstract:We demonstrate the strong linewidth reduction by a compact Brillouin/erbium fiber laser (BEFL), in which 4-m erbium-doped fiber (EDF) acts as both the Brillouin and linear gain media. Due to the assistance of the linear gain in the EDF with the acoustic damping and the cavity feedback in the resonator, the proposed BEFL transferred the 20-MHz Brillouin pump (BP) into the 950-Hz Brillouin Stokes laser emission, demonstrating that the laser linewidth is reduced by over 2 × 104 times through this BEFL. The linewidth reduction is independent of the 980-nm pump power or the BP wavelength. The BEFL keeps strong linewidth reduction over the whole C-band. This effect of the BEFL provides a simple but effective way to obtain highly coherent light for many applications.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated a new scheme for enhancing the sensitivity of a fiber laser sensor using Brillouin slow light. The Brillouin laser was exposed to environmental vibrations, producing fluctuations at 408 kHz frequency, which were then interrogated using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. By introducing Brillouin slow light into one arm of the interferometer, the sensitivity increased by 1.57 times that of a device without slow light. We believe this scheme may provide a new way of using Brillouin slow light and that it has some important implications regarding the use of fiber sensors for measuring the vibration, temperature, strain and so on.

Abstract:A novel configuration of compound-cavity multi-wavelength Brillouin erbium fiber laser is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. With an incident optical carrier power of 8 dBm, at least 14 lasing lines are obtained with a wavelength spacing of ∼0.08 nm. Stability and power uniformity of the multi-wave-length lasing are ensured by the flat hybrid gain of Brillouin and erbium, the compound-cavity structure, and the four-wave mixing suppression using a long (10 km) single-mode fiber. A stable and frequency-switchable microwave can be achieved by incorporating a fiber Bragg grating filter to select the desired n th-order Stokes wave and beating it with the optical carrier at a photodetector. In our experiment, the 1st-4th-order Stokes waves are filtered respectively and hence a high-quality microwave with a switchable frequency from ∼10 to ∼40 GHz and a tuning step of ∼10 GHz is achieved. The signal-to-noise ratio is measured to be >25 dB.

Abstract:We demonstrated a compact multiwavelength Brillouin-erbium fiber laser (MBEFL) with quadruple-Brillouin-frequency spacing. The quadruple-Brillouin-frequency spacing multiwavelength is generated mainly by utilizing two four-port circulators, two coils of single-mode fiber and two erbium gain modules. The generated multiwavelength spectra were investigated through adjusting the Brillouin pump (BP) and the 980 nm pumps. In the experiments, eight stable wavelengths were produced and the wavelength spacing was 0.348 nm (about 43.5 GHz) as the wavelength and the power of the BP were 5 mW and 1548.11 nm respectively, meanwhile the two 980 nm pumps' powers were 470 mW and 520 mW respectively. The output multiwavelength can be tuned from 1546.12 nm to 1561.01 nm, and the maximum optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of the output channel was about 37 dB. The average OSNR of the stable multiwavelength was about 27 dB. The proposed stable and wider channel spaced MBEFL has diverse applications in dense wavelength division multiplexing optical communication, microwave photonics and fiber-optic sensors.

Abstract:A self-seeded multi-wavelength Brillouin-erbium fiber laser (BEFL) with high Optical Signal To Noise Ratio (OSNR) is demonstrated in the combination of the local line-cavity and the overall ring-cavity system. Especially, the BEFL is composed of one 13 m-Erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser, a 1-km-long single-mode fiber (SMF) merely, where is no filter included. The self-seeded signal in BEFL is initiated by the oscillating waves generated from EDFs and the polarization related phase noise introduced by Faraday rotator mirrors (FRM) which cause spontaneous scattering and backscattered Stokes wave in the fiber. One Polarization controller (PC) is set to select the seed wave, suppressing the output of other wavelengths, by controlling the gain and loss of the cavity. In this proposed structure, the output spectrum is manifested 38 Stokes channels whose OSNR acting as 30 dB, spanning 9 nm. High stability and repeatability of Stokes line is produced from 270 mA-bias 980 nm-pump current which is monitored for changes within 100 min. Such a detailed exploration based on traditional devices will be definitely vital in assisting the generation of multi-Stoke signals.

Abstract:Self-injection locking to an external fiber cavity is an efficient technique enabling drastic linewidth narrowing and selfstabilization of semiconductor lasers. We introduce a simple dual-frequency laser that employs the same external ring fiber cavity for self-injection locking of a standard semiconductor DFB laser and for the generation of the Stokes light via stimulated Brillouin scattering. In contrast to the previous Brillouin laser configurations, the system spliced from standard telecom components is supplied by a low-bandwidth active optoelectronic feedback that helps to maintain the self-injection locking to provide both the DFB laser line narrowing and permanent coupling between the DFB laser and the fiber ring cavity thus enabling the dual-frequency laser operation. The laser performance characteristics are well superior to the on-board laser modules commonly used with BOTDA. In particular, the configuration reduces the natural Lorentzian linewidth of the light emitted by the laser at pump and Stokes frequencies down to 270 Hz and 110 Hz, respectively, and features a stable 300-Hz-width RF spectrum characterizing beating between two laser outputs. In a direct comparison with the commercial BOTDA, we explore the utilization of our low-cost solution for the BOTDA sensing demonstrating distributed measurements of the Brillouin frequency shift in 10-km sensing fiber with 1.5m spatial resolution.

Abstract:A narrow-linewidth all-polarization-maintaining (PM) Brillouin erbium-doped fiber laser (BEFL) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally, which employs erbium-doped fiber (EDF) acting as both the linear gain and the Brillouin gain medium. In order to realize a single longitudinal mode (SLM) operation and a narrow linewidth fiber laser output, the saturable absorber (SA) and the optical self-injection feedback structure are employed in the BEFL for the first time. In this experiment, three sets of comparative experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the SA and the self-injection feedback structure. The experimental result shows that the SA structure can eliminate transient multimode phenomena and narrow the linewidth, and the self-injection feedback structure can act as an effective mode filter and a compound-cavity to make the intracavity mode purer. A stable SLM operation of the BEFL is verified by the delayed self-heterodyne system, which thanks to the adding of the SA and the self-injection feedback structure. The BEFL's wavelength stability detected by is less than 0.0045 nm over 14 hours. In addition, an ultra-narrow linewidth of approximately 224 Hz is obtained.

Abstract:We demonstrate a tunable multiwavelength fiber laser in this paper. The multiwavelength comb is produced by a self-seeded Brillouin-erbium fiber laser (BEFL). The self-seeded Brilllouin pump is achieved by incorporation of a transmissive Sagnac loop filter and 2 km single mode fiber. We study the influence of the transmissive Sagnac loop filter on the BEFL in detail, include the tunable characteristics of the BEFL, and the influence of the Sagnac loop bandwidth on the multiwavelength band. A multiwavelength band with 52 lines is achieved when the bandwidth of the Sagnac loop filter is 83.3 nm. At the same time, we observed dual Brillouin bands exciting. Abstract:A novel optical amplification configuration based on ultra-long fiber laser with a ring cavity was proposed and applied to Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) sensing system, in order to extend the measurement distance significantly. The parameters used in the experiment were optimized, considering the main limitations of the setup, such as depletion, self-phase modulation (SPM) and pump-signal relative intensity noise (RIN) transfer. Through analyzing Brillouin gain spectrum, we demonstrated distributed sensing over 94 km of standard single-mode fiber with 3 meter spatial resolution and strain/temperature accuracy of 28 /1. 4 degrees C.

Abstract:<p>A narrow-linewidth erbium-doped fiber laser based on the fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) fabricated was proposed and demonstrated experimentally. A pair of FBGs with reflectivity of 92% and 10%, respectively, at the center wavelength of 1580 nm were inscribed in standard SMF-28 fibers without hydrogen loading by femtosecond laser point-by-point directly writing method, which was used as mirrors for wavelength selection of fiber laser, gratings full width at half maximum (FWHM) was less than 0.15 nm. A simple linear-cavity fiber laser was realized based on gain medium, pump source and FBGs. When gain medium of Er-doped fiber is selected 8 m, a stable single wavelength of 1579 nm laser with a 3 dB linewidth of 0.06 nm was obtained. Its output power is 24.1 mW when the maximum pump power is 600 mA, and its single wavelength of 1579 nm is consistent with the central wavelength of the fabricated FBGs. This type of laser source shows real promise for applications in coherent optical frequency domain reflectometry and high resolution fiber sensor systems.</p>

Abstract:We have demonstrated a novel multiwavelength Brillouin-erbium fiber laser (BEFL), in which the Brillouin pump is self-excited within the linear cavity, instead of the injection from the external cavity or direct generation in the intracavity. By using this simple scheme, the generation of more than 160 Brillouin Stokes lines has been experimentally demonstrated, which is the largest one achieved in BEFLs to the best of our knowledge. Also, the single longitudinal mode operation and the low noise performance of output wavelength line have been confirmed. Meanwhile, the experiment demonstrates that the BEFL performs good stability on both the operating wavelengths and the output power of each wavelength.
An Integrated Fiber-optic White-light Interferometry System Based on VT-DBR Laser

Abstract:In this paper, a cost-effective and high-precision optical fiber sensing system based on VT-DBR laser for white light interferometry is proposed. A low-noise, low power, high modulation-bandwidth laser driver with excellent long-term stability is described. A stable and high laser drive current has been obtained using a high-precision ADN8810 chip. Self-designed data acquisition module based on the Analog-to-Digital acquisition chip AD9226 was developed to collect data from Fabry-Perot (FP) sensor interference spectrum, and then the acquired spectral data were transferred to the PC by USB serial port. Laser scanning monitoring, data acquisition and data transmission are carried out using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). An integral temperature chip ADN8831 was used to drive the thermoelectric cooler controller of the Vernier Tuned Distributed Bragg Reflector (VT-DBR) tunable laser. This system has a broad sweep range (1527-1567nm)with a wavelength interval of 8 pm, and a full-spectrum scanning rate of 100 Hz. Contrast observation of spectrum experiment with commercial optical sensing interrogator sm125 and temperature sensing experiments of FP sensor cavity length demodulation using cross-correlation algorithm was carried out to investigate the performance of the system. Experimental results show that the system is reliable and has superior performance. Benefiting from the self-developed and integrated essential electrical circuits, the whole system has small size, cost-effective and potential application value.

Abstract:We have demonstrated a tunable multiwavelength Brillouin- Erbium fiber laser (BEFL), which is internally self-excited without additional Brillouin pump. With the use of a birefringence loop mirror filter, the laser output wavelength can be tuned through modifying the filtering profile of the birefringence filter. As a result, the generation of more than 70-wavelength combs with uniform power distribution has been obtained in ~11-nm tuning range. And the wavelength of combs can be tuned in the bandwidth of the Sagnac loop filter. Also, utilizing the spare port of the 3-dB coupler as the output port, the laser output power efficiency has been enhanced by 13 dB.

Abstract:By incorporating a four-order Brillouin-frequency shifter (BFS) into a ring cavity, we demonstrate a quadruple-Brillouin-frequency wavelength spaced Brillouin–erbium fiber laser (BEFL). The multiwavelength generation is based on the cascaded stimulated Brillouin scattering occurred in two single-mode fibers (SMFs) with identical Brillouin-frequency shift of the four-order BFS. A four-channel Brillouin multiwavelength with 0.353 nm wavelength spacing is realized.

Abstract:We report a short‐cavity fiber laser configured with a high‐concentration erbium‐doped fiber with stable singlefrequency output. The fiber laser utilized a fiber Bragg grating inscribed into a piece of polarization‐maintaining optical fiber as the output coupler to ensure a stable single frequency laser output. The polarization‐maintaining optical fiber used in the output coupler is intended to provide the linearly polarized singlefrequency laser output. The fiber laser had a maximum hundreds of micron‐Watt level power output pumped by a fiber pigtailed laser diode working at 980 nm. Mode hopping phenomenon was eliminated in such a short‐cavity fiber laser. Laser frequency stability less than 400 MHz over 10 minutes was obtained. Abstract:Using Brillouin/Raman fiber laser (BRFL), we obtain an ultra-broadband (1433-1533nm) CW supercontinuum (SC) centered at 1484nm with maximum average output power of 1.87W and a nonlinear conversionefficiency of 81%. Spectral density of 18.4mW/nm is obtained. The BRFL consists of a Raman cavity withphosphosilicate fiber (PDF) and pairs of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) mirrors and a Brillouin cavity with the PDFand single-mode fiber (SMF), and feedback FBG mirror. With an 8.4W/1064nm Yb-doped double-clad fiberlaser (DCFL) as a pump and a 50% feedback FBG mirror at the end of the BRFL, an output power of over 1.7Wwith 100nm bandwidth centered at 1484nm and weak 0.11nm spectral modulation were observed. The outputcharacteristics of the SC for different PDF and SMF lengths in the Raman and Brillouin cavity are reported.
