Abstract:This study examined the relationship between managerial ties (political and business ties) and new product development performance in China, an emerging market, by focusing on the joint moderating effects of entrepreneurial orientation and environmental uncertainty. Based on a sample of 193 domestic high-tech firms from China, we found that both political and business ties were positively related to firms' new product development performance. In addition, entrepreneurial orientation and environmental uncertainty strengthened the effects of these ties on firms' new product development performance. Finally, political and business ties were found to be most positively related to firms' new product development performance when both the levels of entrepreneurial orientation and environmental uncertainty were high. The theoretical and managerial implications of these results are discussed.
