Competitor Orientation, New Venture Performance, and the Mediating Role of Organizational Legitmacy

Abstract:Given that new ventures are facing legitimacy constraints, the present article combines competitor orientation and the organizational legitimacy perspective to propose that a U-shaped curvilinear relationship exists between competitor orientation and new venture performance and to show the mediating role of organizational legitimacy in the aforementioned focal relationship. Based on a dataset of Chinese new ventures, the current article employs the general analytical framework using the moderated path analysis method (Edwards & Lambert, 2007) to test the proposed U-shaped curvilinear relationship and mediation hypotheses. We also conduct more robust testing by comparing the results under the moderated path analysis and basic mediation model methods (Baron & Kenny, 1986). The results support the moderated path analysis method. Our research provides a more complete understanding on the new venture growth process, both from a market orientation and a legitimacy perspective.
