Abstract:Tremendous efforts have been paid to tackle our energy crisis and environmental issues. CO as main source for the greenhouse effect, is very abundant 2, in nature and can be used as feedstock to prepare value-added carbon materials via the electrochemical reduction. By carefully manipulating electrolysis current density, electrolyte composition, electrode materials and temperature, various functional carbon materials, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, graphite, nanodiamonds, etc., could be readily generated with high Faraday Efficiency. The obtained materials exhibit excellented performances in energy applications like batteries and supercapacitors. Electrochemical reduction of CO provides a promising pathway for CO capture 2 2 and conversion and creates materials suitable for high energy power/density devices.

The synthesis parameters are compared, and the applications of as-obtained carbons are briefly summarized. Additionally, some perspectives on this technology are also discussed.

Abstract:The electroreduction of CO2 in molten salt presents a promising strategy for achieving decarbonization while simultaneously producing highly valuable CO2-derived carbon-based nanomaterials. Although electrolytic nanocarbons have been explored for an extended period, their applications in energy storage and as electrocatalysts still require an in-depth study. This paper initially introduces the advantages and basic mechanisms of CO2 reduction in molten salt and then discusses the progress of CO2-derived carbon-based nanomaterials. More importantly, the paper summarizes the applications in capacitors, batteries, and electrocatalysts based on research progress and material characteristics. It is highlighted that CO2-derived carbon-based nanomaterials were initially used in capacitors and batteries and have recently begun to be utilized as electrocatalysts for two-electron oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, and hydrogen evolution reaction. A comprehensive understanding of the synthetic mechanisms of various CO2-derived carbon-based nanomaterials and their applications can lay a foundation for the further development of this low-carbon-footprint process.

Abstract:Amino-functionalized ionic liquid was synthesized and used as an electrolyte for electrocatalytic activation and conversion of carbon dioxide and methanol into dimethyl carbonate with graphite cathode under ambient conditions. The amino-functionalized ionic liquid was found to be best performance for electrochemical synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from methanol and CO2 in the absence of any other additives due to its effective capture and activation of CO2. Abstract:Carbon emissions have caused serious climate changes such as global warming, glacier melting, and sea level rise. Carbon neutrality has become a global target and the sustainable disposal of carbon pollutants, such as CO2 and low value-added solid carbon wastes, is crucial to solve the climate problem. Expectedly, carbon pollutants are also considered as abundant secondary carbon resources for high value-added utilization. In the past decade, a green and sustainable molten salt electrochemical method has been innovatively developed to directly convert carbon pollutants to advanced graphitized carbon materials. It provides a promising and economic route for the value-added utilization of carbon pollutants to promote the impressive target of carbon neutrality. The electro-conversion mechanisms of CO2 and solid carbon resources to high value-added graphitized carbon materials are deeply discussed. The demands and the development status of inert anodes for molten salt electrochemistry are summarized. The micro-structure adjustment of carbon materials from CO2 is reviewed and the dependence of the graphitization degree is analyzed in detail. A preliminary application evaluation of CO2 electro-conversion in molten salt is carried out. The molten salt electrochemical graphitization conversion of low value-added solid carbon resources is summarized. Furthermore, the promising applications of carbon nanomaterials from carbon pollutants for batteries, supercapacitors, and catalysts are highlighted.

Abstract:Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) concentration has reached record levels due to excessive anthropogenic CO 2 emissions from massive industrial productions. Renewable-energy-driven CO 2 electroreduction is an effective method of directly converting CO 2 into various value-added chemicals or materials without subsequent geological disposal treatment. Owing to their promising thermal stability, wide electrochemical window, tunable oxo-basicity, and nontoxic nature, molten salt electrolytes endow intrinsic advantages, such as fast CO 2 absorption and selective electrochemical transformation, among different electrolyte species, wherein advanced carbon materials, CO, and hydrocarbons can be generated at relatively high current densities. Herein, we review the recent advances in molten salt CO 2 capture and electrochemical transformation (MSCC-ET) technologies, including reaction mechanisms, CO 2 absorption kinetics, electrode reaction kinetics, and product selectivity. This review highlights feasible strategies for regulating nanostructures, carbon product crystallinity, energy efficiency, overall CO 2 conversion efficiency, and MSCC-ET adaptability toward practical flue gases. Moreover, suitable cost-effective inert anode candidates for the oxygen evolution reaction are discussed.

Abstract:Electrochemical transformation of carbon dioxide (CO2) has been cited as one effective means to close present carbon cycle and resolve increasing ambient CO2 concentration deriving from our high demands for energy and over-reliance on fossil fuels. However, efficient conversion of wasted CO2 into valuable chemicals is still a big challenge. In this paper, atmospheric CO2 is facilely transformed to carbon materials with desirable nanostructures, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), honeycomb-like carbon and carbon spheres in a high-yield and scalable molten salts electrolysis setup. Our findings demonstrate the significant dependence of carbon structure on electrolyte composition, electrode materials, and applied temperature. Overall, this work provides a novel carbon negative capture and conversion strategy where carbon fuel or even valued nanostructured carbon materials are acquired with greenhouse gas of CO2 as the final carbon source. Electrochemical Approaches for CO2 Conversion to Chemicals: A Journey toward Practical Applications

Abstract:Carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration play an essential role to address CO2 emissions. Among all carbon utilization technologies, CO2 electroreduction has gained immense interest due to its potential for directly converting CO2 to a variety of valuable commodity chemicals using clean, renewable electricity as the sole energy source. The research community has witnessed rapid advances in CO2 electrolysis technology in recent years, including highly selective catalysts, larger-scale reactors, specific process modeling, as well as a mechanistic understanding of the CO2 reduction reaction. The rapid advances in the field brings promise to the commercial application of the technology and the rapid rollout of the CO2 electroreduction for chemical manufacturing.This Account focuses on our contributions in both fundamental and applied research in the field of electrocatalytic CO2 and CO reduction reactions. We first discuss (1) the development of novel electrocatalysts for CO2/CO electroreduction to enhance the product selectivity and lower the energy consumption. Specifically, we synthesized nanoporous Ag and homogeneously mixed Cu-based bimetallic catalysts for the enhanced production of CO from CO2 and multicarbon products from CO, respectively. Then, we review our efforts in (2) the field of reactor engineering, including a dissolved CO2 H-type cell, vapor-fed CO2 three-compartment flow cell, and vapor-fed CO2 membrane electrode assembly, for enhancing reaction rates and scalability. Next, we describe (3) the investigation of reaction mechanisms using in situ and operando techniques, such as surface-enhanced vibrational spectroscopies and electrochemical mass spectroscopy. We revealed the participation of bicarbonate in CO2 electroreduction on Au using attenuated total-reflectance surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy, the presence of an "oxygenated" surface of Cu under CO electroreduction conditions using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and the origin of oxygen in acetaldehyde and other CO electroreduction products on Cu using flow electrolyzer mass spectrometry. Lastly, we examine (4) the commercial potential of the CO2 electrolysis technology, such as understanding pollutant effects in CO2 electroreduction and developing techno-economic analysis. Specifically, we discuss the effects of SO2 and NOx in CO2 electroreduction using Cu, Ag, and Sn catalysts. We also identify technical barriers that need to be overcome and offer our perspective on accelerating the commercial deployment of the CO2 electrolysis technology.

Abstract:The persistent utilization of fossil fuels has resulted in a continuous increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. As a potential solution to environmental concerns, the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to solid carbon is recognized for its straightforward operation, precise reaction control, and environment friendliness. Moreover, with this process combined with renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power, electrochemical reduction can further contribute to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable development. However, the strong double covalent bond between carbon and oxygen atoms and the degradation of the electrodes hinder the commercialization of this technology. Several strategies have been reported, including reduction of carbon dioxide in solid oxide electrolysis cells, in molten salt and liquid metal, and using a hybrid electro-thermochemical looping strategy. This mini-review presents a systematic and critical analysis of the experimental conditions, mechanisms, and product morphologies reported in the literature, thereby offering reference for future research endeavors in this rapidly emerging field.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) emission from fossil fuel utilization poses a potential thread to global climate. Recent development in electrochemical CO2 reduction opens up new possibilities of utilization of CO2 as a carbon feedstock for fuel generation and commodity chemicals. This article reviewed progress related to electrochemical CO2 reduction in the past few years, with a focus on new development of CO2 reduction electrocatalysts, mechanistic understanding of CO2 electro-reduction reaction, and process engineering efforts in CO2 electrolyzers. Additionally, critical issues associated with current state-of-art systems were identified and potential directions for future studies were discussed. The article aims at providing the community a timely review of recent technical achievements as well as inspiring new ideas towards a practical CO2 electrolysis technology.

Abstract:Electrochemically converting CO2/carbonate to functional carbon materials and oxygen in molten carbonates has been viewed as a promising approach to tackling the environmental and energy challenges. Until now, most molten carbonate electrolyzers have focused on lithium-based molten salts due to their relatively low eutectic temperature and thermodynamic feasibility. However, the use of lithium-based molten salts will be constrained by its limited resource. Herein, the electrolysis of lithium-free molten carbonates (MCO3–Na2CO3–K2CO3, M = Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba) is systematically studied. Using the low-cost Ni-based inert anode, high value-added carbon and oxygen are prepared in the molten carbonates containing CaCO3, SrCO3, and BaCO3. In addition, the solubilities of alkaline-earth metal oxides (MO) in molten carbonates are measured and the results show that MgO, CaO, and SrO are nearly insoluble and BaO is soluble (8.62 wt % BaO in 10 wt % BaCO3–Na2CO3–K2CO3, 750 °C) in the corresponding alkaline-earth metal carbonates. Instead of focusing on a special topic of electrocatalysts for the CO2RR that have been extensively reviewed elsewhere, we herein present a rather comprehensive review of the recent research progress, in the view of associated value-added products upon selective electrocatalytic CO2 conversion. We initially provide an overview of the history and the fundamental science regarding the electrocatalytic CO2RR, with a special introduction to the design, preparation, and performance evaluation of electrocatalysts, the factors influencing the CO2RR, and the associated theoretical calculations. Emphasis will then be given to the emerging trends of selective electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 into a variety of value-added products. The structure-performance relationship and mechanism will also be discussed and investigated. The outlooks for CO2 electrocatalysis, including the challenges and opportunities in the development of new electrocatalysts, electrolyzers, the recently rising operando fundamental studies, and the feasibility of industrial applications are finally summarized.

Abstract:The increasing concentration of CO 2 , a greenhouse gas, is seriously affecting the environmental safety and ecology health, and it is imperative to adopt effective methods to reduce the CO 2 concentration. As an effective method of CO 2 capture and electrochemical conversion into functional solid carbon materials, the molten salt method is widely used for CO 2 capture and storage with its advantages of wide potential electrochemical window, high CO 2 solubility, less side reactions, and simple operation. The molten salt CO 2 capture and electrochemical conversion (MSCC-EC) process can efficiently capture CO 2 by its high solubility in molten salt and decompose CO 2 into solid carbon material at the cathode and O 2 at the anode powered by electrical energy to achieve CO 2 capture and green conversion in the presence of a molten salt electrolyte. This report summarizes the MSCC-EC process and the intrinsic mechanism, and makes a systematic summary of the formation mechanism and application prospects of different kinds of carbon products produced in the electrolysis process, intending to optimize the CO 2 capture and green conversion process or provide new methods based on a comprehensive understanding of the MSCC-EC process.
