Abstract:This chapter addresses broad major problems in terms of air and soil pollution found in large cities and megacities in China. It provides an insight into typical urban environmental problems in China, concentrating on atmospheric and terrestrial issues, using Beijing as an example. Urban soils are subject to continuous accumulation of contaminants from both localised and diffuse sources. Another significant source of urban land/soil pollution due to rapid urban development and population increase is attributed to the accumulation of municipal solid waste. Air pollution in Beijing has attracted increasing attention from the 1980s due to high concentrations of particulate matter and sulphur dioxide, particularly during winter and spring. Analogous to other urban area in China, land/soil contamination in Beijing is associated primarily with industrial activities, solid waste disposal, and the redevelopment of urban agricultural and industrial land.
