Abstract:Constructing novel surface microstructures for photocatalytic materials could significantly enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate from water splitting. In this work, novel 2D/3D structured CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 p-n heterojunction photocatalysts for water splitting were successfully prepared by a solvothermal method. The coupling of a 2D CuCo2S4 nanoplate on the surface of 3D flower-like CdIn2S4 microspheres has strengthened the visible light absorption and promoted the charge separation efficiency due to their tight contacting area. The obtained CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 (CSCIS-2) photocatalyst exhibited a hydrogen production rate of 1320 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which was fivefold of that for pure CdIn2S4. Additionally, cyclic tests demonstrated improved photoactivity stability of the samples. A series of photoelectrochemical characterizations confirmed the effective suppression of charge carrier recombination in CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 composite catalysts. Finally, a rational photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the semiconductor band theory. This work contributes to the enrichment of sulfide-based research and applications in photocatalysis.

Abstract:Artificial Z-scheme system inspired by the natural photosynthesis in green plants has attracted extensive attention owing to its advantages such as simultaneously wide range light absorption, highly efficient charge separation and strong redox ability. In this paper, we report the synthesis of a novel all-solidstate direct Z-scheme photocatalyst of Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 by depositing Ag3PO4 nanoparticles (NPs) on CeO2/TiO2 hierarchical branched nanowires (BNWs), where the CeO2/TiO2 BNWs act as a novel substrate for the well dispersed nano-size Ag3PO4. The Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 photocatalyst exhibits excellent ability of photocatalytic oxygen evolution from pure water splitting. It is suggested that the Z-scheme charge transfer route between CeO2/TiO2 and Ag3PO4 improves the redox ability. On the other hand, the cascade energy level alignment in CeO2/TiO2 BNWs expedites the spatial charge separation, and hence suppresses photocatalytic backward reaction. However, it is difficult to realize a perfect excitation balance in Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 and the composite still surfers photo-corrosion in photocatalysis reaction. Nevertheless, our results provide an innovative strategy of constructing a Z-scheme system from a type-II heterostructure and a highly efficient oxygen evolution catalyst. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Solid-state Z-scheme assisted hydrated tungsten trioxide/ZnIn2S4 photocatalyst for efficient photocatalytic H2 production

Abstract:Efficient water splitting for H2 evolution over semiconductor photocatalysts is highly attractive in the field of clean energy. It is of great significance to construct heterojunctions, among which the direct Z-scheme nanocomposite photocatalyst provides effective separation of photo-generated carriers to boost the photocatalytic performance. Herein, Z-scheme hydrated tungsten trioxide/ZnIn2S4 is fabricated via an in-situ hydrothermal method where ZnIn2S4 nanosheets are grown on WO3⋅xH2O. The close contact between WO3⋅0.5H2O and WO3⋅0.33H2O as well as ZnIn2S4 improve the charge carrier separation and migration in the photocatalyst, where the strong reducing electrons in the conduction band of ZnIn2S4 and the strong oxidizing holes in the valence band of WO3⋅0.33H2O are retained, leading to enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production. The obtained WO3⋅xH2O/ZnIn2S4 shows an excellent H2 production rate of 7200 μmol g-1h-1, which is 11 times higher than pure ZnIn2S4. To the best of our knowledge, this value is higher than most of the WO3-based noble metal-free semiconductor photocatalysts. The improved stability and activity are attributed to the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction, which can markedly accelerate the interfacial charge separation for surface reaction. This work offers a promising strategy towards the design of efficient Z-scheme photocatalyst to suppress electron-hole recombination and optimize redox potential.

Abstract:In the face of energy scarcity and environmental degradation, photocatalysis emerges as a green and highly efficient method to convert solar energy into a renewable energy source. In this study, CdS nanoparticles were successfully grown in situ along the edges of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets using ultrasound during the synthesis process and the second phase precipitation of In(OH)3 appeared in the process of preparation. Optimal Cd and S ratios resulted in ZnIn2S4@In(OH)3@CdS heterojunction exhibiting remarkable photocatalytic H2 production performance compared to standalone ZnIn2S4 and CdS. The internal heterojunction interface within the composite naturally generates an electric field, enhancing carrier separation and facilitating their transport. Additionally, the inclusion of In(OH)3 further expedites carrier extraction. Ultimately, the mechanism behind the photocatalytic H2 production was elucidated using the Z-scheme mechanism. This work introduced a novel approach to fabricating multifunctional photocatalysts, presenting a fresh perspective in their design and preparation.

Abstract:A novel CdS/ZnO heterojunction constructed of zero-dimensional (0D) CdS quantum dots (QDs) and two-dimensional (2D) ZnO nanosheets (NSs) was rationally designed for the first time. The 2D ZnO NSs were assembled into ZnO microflowers (MFs) via an ultrasonic-assisted hydrothermal procedure (100 °C, 12 h) in the presence of a NaOH solution (0.06 M), and CdS QDs were deposited on both sides of every ZnO NS in situ by using the successive ionic-layer absorption and reaction method. It was found that the ultrasonic treatment played an important role in the generation of ZnO NSs, while NaOH was responsible to the assembly of a flower-like structure. The obtained CdS/ZnO 0D/2D heterostructures exhibited remarkably enhanced photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution from water splitting in comparison with other CdS/ZnO heterostructures with different dimensional combinations such as 2D/2D, 0D/three-dimensional (3D), and 3D/0D. Among them, CdS/ZnO-12 (12 deposition cycles of CdS QDs) exhibited the highest hydrogen evolution rate of 22.12 mmol/g/h, which was 13 and 138 times higher than those of single CdS (1.68 mmol/g/h) and ZnO (0.16 mmol/g/h), respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be attributed to several positive factors, such as the formation of a Z-scheme photocatalytic system, the tiny size effect of 0D CdS QDs and 2D ZnO NSs, and the intimate contact between CdS QDs and ZnO NSs. The formation of a Z-scheme photocatalytic system remarkably promoted the separation and migration of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The tiny size effect effectively decreased the recombination probability of electrons and holes. The intimate contact between the two semiconductors efficiently reduced the migration resistance of photogenerated carriers. Furthermore, CdS/ZnO-12 also presented excellent stability for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution without any decay within five cycles in 25 h.

Abstract:Construction of S-scheme photocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen production has been regarded as a promising route to effectively utilize solar energy. However, the limited contact area blocks extensive migration of charge carrier and restrains the further development of these photocatalysts. Herein, a novelty SnO2/CdS 2D in-plane heterojunction is designed and fabricated, in which interfacial lattice match occurs in the nanosheets providing a reasonable condition for close combination between SnO2 and CdS. Specially, experimental results and corresponding density functional theory simulation jointly identify the charge redistribution and formation internal electric field between two branches, which is the intrinsic cause for promoting charge carrier migrating following S-scheme mechanism. Eventually, contributed by the appropriate surface hydrogen adsorption free energy and enhanced reduction abilities of the electrons, the photocatalytic H2 production of optimized SnO2/CdS nanosheets is about 10 and 5 times higher than that of SnO2 and CdS. The excellent performance of SnO2/CdS and novel designed synthetic method provide opportunities to develop advanced photocatalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:The simultaneous production of the hydrogen and oxygen for photocatalytic water splitting still remains a critical challenge because O2 release from semiconductor catalysts is an extremely difficult. Herein, we design and synthesize a novel ZnS-ZnO heterostructure sheets by combining solid-state Z-scheme for photocatalytic O2 and H2 evolution. Electron spin resonance result confirms that a solid-state Z-scheme is successfully introduced into the ZnS-ZnO heterostructure. Thanks to the rapid separation and migration of photoinduced electron/hole according to the Z-scheme mechanism, ZnS-ZnO heterostructure exhibits efficient H2 evolution without using any sacrificial agent, far beyond the comparative values reported by currently ZnS/ZnO-based photocatalysts. Especially, the as-synthesized photocatalyst presents the ability of O2 evolution for pure water splitting using Pt as cocatalyst, which is too difficult to be realized for previously reported ZnO/ZnS-based photocatalysts. Therefore, this work presents a new idea to design other semiconductor photocatalysts for simultaneous H2 and O2 evolution.

Abstract:The in-plane heterojunctions with atomic-level thickness and chemical-bond-connected tight interfaces possess high carrier separation efficiency and fully exposed surface active sites, thus exhibiting exceptional photocatalytic performance. However, the construction of in-plane heterojunctions remains a significant challenge. Herein, we prepared an in-plane ZnIn2S4/In(OH)3 heterojunction (ZISOH) by partial conversion of ZnIn2S4 to In(OH)3 through the addition of H2O2. This in situ oxidation etching-hydrolysis approach enables the ZISOH heterojunction to not only preserve the original nanosheet morphology of ZnIn2S4 but also form an intimate interface. Moreover, generated In(OH)3 serves as an electron-accepting platform and also promotes the adsorption of CO2. As a result, the heterojunction exhibits a remarkably enhanced performance for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The production rate and selectivity of CO reach 1760 μmol g-1 h-1 and 78%, respectively, significantly higher than those of ZnIn2S4 (842 μmol g-1 h-1 and 65%). This work puts forward a feasible and facile approach to construct in-plane heterojunctions to enhance the photocatalytic performance of two-dimensional metal sulfides.

Abstract:Direct Z-scheme photocatalysts have attracted extensive attention due to their strong redox ability and efficient separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In this study, we constructed two types of ZnS/SnS2 heterojunctions with different stacking models of ZnS and SnS2 layers, and investigated their structures, stabilities, and electronic and optical properties. Both types of heterojunctions are stable and are direct Z-scheme photocatalysts with band gaps of 1.87 eV and 1.79 eV, respectively. Furthermore, their oxidation and reduction potentials straddle the redox potentials of water, which makes them suitable as photocatalysts for water splitting. The built-in electric field at the heterojunction interface improves the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, thus enhancing their photocatalytic efficiency. In addition, ZnS/SnS2 heterojunctions have higher carrier mobilities and light absorption intensities than ZnS and SnS2 monolayers. Therefore, the ZnS/SnS2 heterojunction has a broad application prospect as a direct Z-scheme visible-light-driven photocatalyst for overall water splitting.

Abstract:Coherent twin boundaries in particulate chalcogenide photocatalysts can induce intrinsic homojunctions, which have been demonstrated to be effective toward solar hydrogen production from water. However, limited success up to date has been achieved on pure water splitting because of the self-oxidation of the chalcogenide photocatalyst. Herein, we report the efficient pure water splitting for simultaneous H2 and H2O2 production under visible light irradiation over a Cd0.5Zn0.5S (CZS) nanotwin photocatalyst. The success relies on the formation of unique phosphorus bridges at the surface of the photocatalyst that couples bulk twin boundaries and surface red phosphorus (RP) for efficient charge separation and restricted photocorrosion via a two-electron Z-scheme mechanism. The optimal photocatalyst exhibited 5.2 times increased H2 evolution rate compared to the pristine CZS and good stability as well. This work opens a door toward chalcogenide photocatalyst design for efficient pure water splitting by coupling twin nanostructures with surface P doping and heterojunction construction.

Abstract:The development and design of efficient photoelectric catalysts is of great significance for environmental friendliness. This paper is devoted to finding a new two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunction to realize hydrogen production from water splitting. Based on first-principles calculations, a direct type-Z C3N/WS2 heterojunction was successfully designed by combining highly active two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with C3N similar in structure to graphene. The staggered band structure of the direct Z-scheme and high carrier mobility facilitates the efficient separation of photogenerated electron and hole pairs. More importantly, the C3N/WS2 direct Z-type heterojunction can perfectly realize total water splitting from pH = 0 to pH = 7. What's more, the Gibbs free energy and overpotential demonstrate the excellent hydrogen evolution capability and the oxygen evolution capacity of the material. In , these studies provide new ideas for designing high-performance photoelectric catalysts for visible-light water splitting.

Abstract:The stable composite photocatalyst integrated by ultrathin ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on surface of hollow CdS exhibits outstanding visible‐light‐driven photocatalytic H2 generation activity, due to that: i) the Z‐scheme charge transfer route facilitates charge separation, prolongs carrier lifetimes, and remains strong electron reduction capacity; ii) the unique cube‐in‐cube structure brings abundant active sites, improves light harvesting ability, shortens charge transfer distance. Rational design hybrid nanostructure photocatalysts with efficient charge separation and transfer, and good solar light harvesting ability have critical significance for achieving high solar‐to‐chemical conversion efficiency. Here a highly active and stable composite photocatalyst is reported by integrating ultrathin ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on surface of hollow CdS cube to form the cube‐in‐cube structure. Experimental results combined with density functional theory calculations confirm that the Z‐scheme ZnIn2S4/CdS heterojunction is formed, which highly boosts the charge separation and transfer under the local‐electric‐field at semiconductor/semiconductor interface, and thus prolongs their lifetimes. Moreover, such a structure affords the highly enhanced light‐harvesting property. The optimized ZnIn2S4/CdS nanohybrids exhibit superior H2 generation rate under visible‐light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm) with excellent photochemical stability during 20 h continuous operation.

Abstract:The charge transfer within heterojunction is crucial for the efficiency and stability of photocatalyst for overall water splitting (OWS). Herein, InVO4 nanosheets have been employed as a support for the lateral epitaxial growth of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets to produce hierarchical InVO4@ZnIn2S4 (InVZ) heterojunctions. The distinct branching heterostructure facilitates active site exposure and mass transfer, further boosting the participation of ZnIn2S4 and InVO4 for proton reduction and water oxidation, respectively. The unique Z-scheme modulated charge transfer, visualized by simulation and in situ analysis, has been proved to promote the spatial separation of photoexcited charges and strengthen the anti-photocorrosion capability of InVZ. The optimized InVZ heterojunction presents improved OWS (153.3 mu mol h(-1) g(-1) for H-2 and 76.9 mu mol h(-1) g(-1) for O-2) and competitive H-2 production (21090 mu mol h(-1) g(-1)). Even after 20 times (100 h) of cycle experiment, it still holds more than 88% OWS activity and a complete structure.

Abstract:In this paper, CdIn2S4/ZnS (CIS/ZnS) nanocomposites were prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method. The structures and physicochemical properties of the nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, UV-Vis, TPR, EIS, PL, and ESR. The photocatalytic activity of CdIn2S4/xZnS composites for water splitting hydrogen evolution (the molar ratio of CdIn2S4 and ZnS is 1: x) is much better than that of the pristine ZnS and CdIn2S4. The optimal catalyst CdIn2S4/12ZnS exhibits the best performance. The hydrogen production rate reaches 3743 μmol·g−1·h−1, which is about 59.1 and 14.4 times that of pure CdIn2S4 and ZnS. The reasons for the better performance of CdIn2S4/xZnS are the strong interaction between CdIn2S4 and ZnS, the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction, the more efficient charge separation, the extension light response in comparison with the single component, and the stronger redox properties. Moreover, the possible hydrogen production mechanism is proposed by the study of VB-XPS, Mott-Schottky, and EPR, which implies it is a Z-scheme photosystem. This work provides an effective method for the modification of ZnS catalysts for the application in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:It is of great significance to design an efficient heterostructure for photocatalytic hydrogen production to solve the energy shortage and environmental crisis. In this letter, we investigate the structure, electron of interface, optical, charge transfer, and photocatalytic mechanism of three different ZnIn 2 S 4 /α-In 2 Se 3 heterostructures by hybrid density functional calculation. It is interesting that the presence of an external electric field not only can change the bandgap but also can modulate the band alignment type. Among them, heterostructure A belongs to type II heterostructure, and heterostructure B and C belong to a Z-scheme heterostructure. Especially in heterostructure C, the electrons deposited on CBM of a ZnIn 2 S 4 monolayer will play an important role in the hydrogen production process. Meanwhile, the small bandgap of ZnIn 2 S 4 /α-In 2 Se 3 Z-scheme heterostructures enables it to obtain a wide light absorption range. Therefore, this study contributes to the design of a novel and potential Z-scheme heterostructure photocatalyst with broad application prospects in both electronic and optoelectronic fields.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalytic water splitting is a green way to convert solar energy into chemical energy, but the recombination of electron and hole pairs and the low utilization of sunlight restrict the development of photocatalytic technology. By comparing the morphologies and hydrogen production properties of different proportions of solid solutions (CdxZn1-xS), one-dimensional (1D) Cd0.9Zn0.1S nanorods (NRs) with the best photocatalytic properties are obtained. In addition, 1D W18O49 nanowires are assembled on the surface of 1D Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs to construct a novel 1D/1D step-scheme (S-scheme) W18O49/Cd0.9Zn0.1S heterojunction photocatalyst. The W18O49/Cd0.9Zn0.1S heterojunction expands the optical absorption capacity of Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs to provide more energy for the photoexcitation of electrons. The optimal hydrogen production rate of W18O49/Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs with W18O49 content of 9 wt% is as high as 66.3 mmol·h-1·g-1, which is 5.7 times and 1.6 times higher than that of Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs and 1 wt% Pt/Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs. The apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 9 wt% W18O49/Cd0.9Zn0.1S reaches 56.0 % and 25.9 % under light wavelength irradiation at 370 and 456 nm, respectively. After the 20 h cycle stability test, the activity of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution does not decrease, due that the severe photo-corrosion of Cd0.9Zn0.1S NRs is efficiently inhibited. This work not only provides a simple and controllable synthesis method for the preparation of heterojunction structure, but also opens up a new way to improve the hydrogen evolution activity and stability of sulfur compounds.

Abstract:It is a considerable challenge to design a highly efficient photocatalyst for overall water splitting. Herein, a zero-dimension/two-dimension (0D/2D) TiO2 nanodots/g-C3N4 step-scheme (S-scheme) photocatalyst (TOCN) for overall water splitting was prepared by a facile phase interfacial reaction. TOCN showed higher photocatalytic water splitting activity under simulated sunlight, which is about 2.2 and 1.7 times higher than TiO2 nanodots and g-C3N4, respectively. The enhancement of photocatalytic performance can be mainly attributed to the formation of S-scheme heterojunction, rather than normal type-II heterojunction, which could not only improve charge separation but also remain the redox ability of TiO2 and g-C3N4. This work presents a simple method to construct an efficient photocatalyst with S-Scheme heterojunction for overall water splitting.

Abstract:The ternary ZnIn2S4-Au-TiO2 Z-scheme heterostructure photocatalysts has been fabricated by selecting effectiveness Au NPs as a solid electron mediator, via a chemical-deposition process for water splitting under simulated solar light irradiation. The designed photocatalysts exhibit high surface area and wide light absorption range, which significantly enhance photocatalytic efficiency. At an optimal ratio of 24 wt% Au NPs and 60 wt% ZnIn2S4, the obtained ZnIn2S4-Au-TiO2 photocatalysts achieve the highest H-2 production with the rate of 186.3 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), and the O-2 production rate is reached to 66.3 mu mol g(-1) h(-1). It showed that the ZnIn2S4-Au-TiO2 composite structures exhibit significantly better photocatalytic activity than ZnIn2S4-TiO2 and Au-ZnIn2S4-TiO2 structure. Such an excellent performance should be attributed to the Au NPs in the Z-scheme system structure which favor to enhance the transfer rate of the photogenerated electrons and holes and remain strong redox ability of the photocatalysts. It is worth pointing out that the unique Z-scheme ZnIn2S4-Au-TiO2 heterostructure shows great solar activity toward water splitting into renewable hydrocarbon fuel.
