Abstract:Efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts made of earth abundant elements are essential for the cost-effective generation of solar fuels. Surface modification is a novel strategy to enhance the activity of OER catalysts, however, it is commonly done under harsh and energy intensive conditions. Herein, we present a facile approach of solvent treatment to hydroxylate the surface of a layered perovskite, Sr3FeCoO7−δ. The catalytic activity correlates with the degree of surface hydroxylation, which influences the absorption energy of intermediates on the surface. The optimized catalyst exhibits higher activity than the current benchmark perovskite OER catalysts. This work introduces a mild and convenient method for surface modification, which may be applicable for the improvement of other nanoscale electrocatalysts.

Thus, developing electrocatalysts with high performance and sufficient stability for the OER is urgently pursued. Although perovskite oxides have provided numerous degrees of freedom for enhancing the electrocatalytic activity due to their diversity and flexibility, their investigation for the OER is mostly limited to pseudocubic structures. In this study, a complex perovskite oxide, Ba0.9Sr0.1Co0.8Fe0.1Ir0.1O3-delta (BSCFI-91), with a six-layer hexagonal (6H) structure, is synthesized first, displaying higher OER activity. Based on parent Ba0.9Sr0.1Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta (BSCF-91), BSCFI-91 is obtained by replacing iron (Fe) with low-level iridium (Ir) doping and produces a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at a low overpotential of 300 mV, a small Tafel slope of 61.2 mV dec(-1), and good stability up to 10 h in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. The dramatically enhanced OER performance is achieved by optimizing cobalt (Co) valence and highly oxidative oxygen species based on the hexagonal structure. The Ir incorporation facilitated the oxygen (O) p band center approaching to the Fermi level, indicating that BSCFI-91 could be a candidate in the electrocatalyst application. Moreover, this study opens up a new way to design efficient perovskite oxides for OER catalysis in terms of hexagonal crystal structures and composition modulation strategy.

Systematic Study of Oxygen Evolution Activity and Stability on La1–xSrxFeO3−δ Perovskite Electrocatalysts in Alkaline Media

Abstract:Perovskite oxide is an attractive low-cost alternative catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) relative to the precious metal oxide-based electrocatalysts (IrO2 and RuO2). In this work, a series of Sr-doped La-based perovskite oxide catalysts with compositions of La1-xSrxFeO3-delta (x = 0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, and 1) are synthesized and characterized. The OER-specific activities in alkaline solution increase in the order of LaFeO3-delta (LF), La0.8Sr0.2FeO3-delta (LSF-0.2), La0.5Sr0.5FeO3-delta (LSF-0.5), SrFeO3-delta (SF), and La0.2Sr0.8FeO3-delta (LSF-0.8). We establish a direct correlation between the enhancement in the specific activity and the amount of surface oxygen vacancies as well as the surface Fe oxidation states. The improved specific activity for LSF-0.8 is clearly linked to the optimum amount of surface oxygen vacancies and surface Fe oxidation states. We also find that the OER performance stability is a function of the crystal structure and the deviation in the surface La and/or Sr composition(s) from their bulk stoichiometric compositions. The cubic structure and lower deviation, as is the case for LSF-0.8, led to a higher OER performance stability. These surface performance relations provide a promising guideline for constructing efficient water oxidation.
Simultaneously Improved Surface and Bulk Participation of Evolved Perovskite Oxide for Boosting Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity Using a Dynamic Cation Exchange Strategy

Abstract:The exceptional activity and stability of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with perovskite electrocatalysts originate from the formation of a thin amorphous layer of Co hydr(oxy)oxide (e.g., CoOxHy) that dynamically interplays with intentional Fe3+ from the electrolyte (0.1 m KOH + 0.1 mm Fe3+), which maximizes both surface and bulk participation in OER. Perovskite oxides are intriguing electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction, but both surface (e.g., composition) and bulk (e.g., lattice oxygen) properties should be optimized to maximize their participation in offering favorable activity and durability. In this work, it is demonstrated that through introducing exogenous Fe3+ (Feexo3+ ) into the liquid electrolyte, not only is the reconstructed surface stabilized and optimized, but the lattice oxygen diffusion is also accelerated. As a result, compared to that in Fe‐free 0.1 m KOH, PrBa0.5Sr0.5Co2O5+δ in 0.1 m KOH + 0.1 mm Fe3+ demonstrates a tenfold increment in activity, an extremely low Tafel slope of ≈50 mV dec‐1, and outstanding stability at 10.0 mA cm‐2 for 10 h. The superior activity and stability are further demonstrated in Zn–air batteries by presenting high open‐circuit voltage, narrow potential gap, high power output, and long‐term cycle stability (500 cycles). Based on experimental and theoretical calculations, it is discovered that the dynamical interaction between the Co hydr(oxy)oxide from surface reconstruction and intentional Fe3+ from the electrolyte plays an important role in the enhanced activity and durability, while the generation of a perovskite‐hydr(oxy)oxide heterostructure improves the lattice oxygen diffusion to facilitate lattice oxygen participation and enhances the stability.

Abstract:Perovskite oxide is a promising alternative to noble metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, as one of the most active oxide catalysts, cubic SrCoO3 presents poor OER performance relative to the theoretically predicted activity. Appropriate introduction of a guest component in the lattice and surface could largely promote the OER activity. Herein, we present a thermal-induced phase-segregation strategy to synthesize a heterostructured SrCo0.8Fe0.5-xO3-δ/FexOy (SC8F5) catalyst for OER. This novel perovskite/Fe3O4 heterostructure allows us to enhance the electrical conductivity ability, increase the Co oxidation state, and activate the surface oxygen to active oxygen species (O22-/O-) for efficient OER. In contrast to the poor stability of SrCo0.8Fe0.2O3-δ, we found that the SC8F5 heterostructure with segregated Fe3O4 on the surface can mitigate surface reconstruction and stabilize the catalyst structure, thereby increasing catalytic stability.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction participated by lattice oxygen oxidation (LOER) on the perovskite catalyst has attracted great interest recently because of its low reaction energy barrier. However, as the surface structure of perovskite is dynamic during catalysis, the active sites and contributing factors of LOER are still unclear, which seriously limits the development of efficient perovskite catalysts. Herein, by using a flexible etching method, we design and fabricate high-efficient La/Sr-based perovskite catalyst with surface Fe sites and Sr vacancies for LOER and establish a relationship between LOER and dynamic surface structure. Theoretical calculations and the advanced in-situ characterizations, such as in-situ X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and in-situ Raman, have demonstrated that surface Fe sites act as catalytic centers for LOER, while Sr vacancies can promote LOER by upshifting oxygen 2p levels. Furthermore, the time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (tof-SIMS) and differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) reveal that the LOER on perovskite is realized by lattice oxygen dynamic change via the adsorbed 16OH transforming to Co-18O-16O in the 18O isotope labeling experiment. The synthesized La/Sr-based perovskite catalyst shows superior OER catalytic performance, which is higher than that of RuO2/C catalyst. This paper not only proves the key roles of surface Fe doping and Sr dynamic dissolution for efficient LOER, but also paves the way for design of high-performance perovskite catalysts.

Abstract:It is found that lattice doping by sulfur can promote the surface reconstruction of NiFe layered double hydroxide for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction activity. The enhancement mechanism and adsorption sites are identified. A dynamic surface reconstruction of oxide electrocatalysts in alkaline media is widely observed especially for layered double hydroxide (LDH), but little is known about how to promote the reconstruction toward desired surfaces for improved oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, surface reconstruction of NiFe LDH nanosheets is successfully induced to a higher degree via in situ sulfur doping than that by natural electrochemical activation. Theoretical calculations, operando Raman, and various ex situ characterizations reveal the S anion‐induced effect can lower the energy barrier and facilitate the phase transformation into highly active S‐doped oxyhydroxides. The generated S‐NixFeyOOH can optimize the intermediate adsorption and facilitate the OER kinetics. The reconstructed S‐oxyhydroxides catalyst presents superior OER activity and long‐term durability compared to undoped ones. This work provides a structure–composition–activity relationship during the in situ surface restructuring of NiFe LDH pre‐catalysts.

Abstract:This study presents a straightforward chemical approach to induce cationic surface defects on SrCoO 3-δ (SCO) perovskites by selectively etching a-site Sr elements on the surface. The modified SCO-30 catalyst from this method exhibits an optimized thickness of cobalt-rich amorphous layer enriched with oxygen vacancies. This modification enhances the trifunctional catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an alkaline electrolyte. Importantly, the perovskite's structure remains unchanged during the surface engineering process. These findings underscore cationic defect engineering as an effective strategy for the rational design of high-performance electrocatalysts, showcasing potential applications in diverse electrochemical processes.

Abstract:Perovskite oxide has been considered as a potential alternative electrocatalyst in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) field. In this work, a sequence of excellent OER perovskite catalysts was obtained by immersing in a diluted HNO3 solution. Therein, the etched 24 h Sr2CoFeO6 sample (SCFO-24), exhibits the best OER activity, with an overpotential of 300 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 59.62 mV dec-1. The improved OER activity of SCFO-24 can be attributed to the enhanced specific surface area derived from selectivity dissolution of a large amount of Sr and the high ratio of oxidative oxygen species (O2-/O-). Our work promotes this simple but efficient approach to improving the OER performance of perovskite oxides.

Abstract:The generation of hydrogen in an environmentally benign way is highly essential to meet future energy demands. However, in the process of splitting water electrochemically, sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) curtails its applicability, as it drags energy input. Herein, we synthesized SrCo-Fe-O oxides to optimize their OER activity by varying the Co/Fe ratio. Among them, Sr2Co1.5Fe0.5O6-delta exhibited the best OER catalytic activity in the series, with an overpotential of 318 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and Tafel slope of 44.8 mV dec(-1). High-resolution neutron powder diffraction analysis identified an intermediate structure between the perovskite and brownmillerite, with alternating layers of disorderly orientated oxygen-deficient tetrahedra and fully stoichiometric octahedra. The unique stacking of tetrahedral and octahedral units facilitates desired interactions between the electrode surface and electrolyte. Theoretical calculations revealed that increased covalency of Co 3d and O 2p in Sr2Co1.5Fe0.5O6-delta oxide is another primary contributor to its augmented water oxidation ability. As a model for developing catalysts with such an intermediate structure, the synergetic effect of oxygen vacancy and hybridization between Co 3d and O 2p assured the Sr2Co1.5Fe0.5O6-delta oxide as a better catalyst for its enhanced OER activity.y
Engineering Active Surface Oxygen Sites of Cubic Perovskite Cobalt Oxides Toward Catalytic Oxidation Reactions

Abstract:Unraveling the role of surface oxygen sites in transition metal oxides during catalytic reactions has always been the focus of environmental and energy chemistry research. Herein, active surface oxygen sites of cubic perovskite cobalt oxide were engineered to comprehend their crucial role and catalytic mechanism at the molecular level. By removing those inert Sr/ La-O termination layers, active oxygen sites were exposed on the Co terminated surface of Sr0.6La0.4CoO3-delta that furnished the dominant catalytic process of CO oxidation via the Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism. The fabrication of five-coordinate cobalt ions and the enhanced covalency of Co-O bonds not only optimize the surface electronic structure of Co 3d-O 2p, but also supply active surface oxygen sites, which effectively oxidizes CO to CO2 with a significantly improved oxidation performance and stability as evidenced by soft/hard XAS, XPS, and O2-TPD. Furthermore, online isotopic 18O2 mass spectrometry, in situ DRIFTS, and theoretical simulation demonstrate that the activity of surface oxygen sites enhances the kinetics of the MvK reaction, while unsaturated coordination sites from five-coordinate cobalt ions primarily contribute to the activated oxygen molecules and the stable catalytic cycle. The results reported here provide a deep insight into the comprehension of the relationships among active oxygen sites, surface electronic structure, and the reaction mechanism of transition metal oxides necessary for catalytic oxidation reactions.

Abstract:Perovskite oxide, a low‐cost bifunctional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst, has acquired a rapidly growing research interest in the areas of energy conversion and storage, owing to its significant surface structure‐induced catalytic performance. Here, recent progress on the electrocatalytic performance of La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3–δ (LSCF) is built by engineering its surface defect structure through a versatile, effective, and controllable lithium reduction strategy. It is established that the lithium reduction treatment causes the formation of a structurally disordered layer at the surface of LSCF nanoparticles. The treated nanoparticles demonstrate significantly enhanced OER and ORR performance, especially for 5 wt% lithium‐reduced LSCF, whose OER potential decreases from 1.66 to 1.55 V at current density of 10 mA cm−2, and ORR onset potential increases from 0.70 to 0.84 V. This work provides the foundation for the optimization of catalytic performance of perovskite oxide (LSCF). Moreover, such defective materials are promising candidates for energy conversion and storage applications.

Abstract:The high overpotential required for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER)-due to the transfer of four protons and four electrons-has greatly hindered the commercial viability of water electrolysis. People have been committed to the development of alternative precious metal-free OER electrocatalysts, especially electrocatalysts for alkaline media. In this study, we report the application of Sr-6(Co0.8Fe0.2)(5)O-15 (SCF-H) perovskite oxide with a hexagonal phase structure in the field of OER electrocatalysis. Synthesized by a simple and universal sol-gel method, the SCF-H perovskite oxide shows prominent OER activity with an overpotential of 318 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and a Tafel slope of only 54 mV dec(-1), which is significantly better than the cubic phase structure SrCo0.8Fe0.2O3-delta (SCF-C), benchmark noble-metal oxide RuO2 and Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta (BSCF). Compared with cubic SCF-C, the hexagonal SCF-H perovskite oxide has abundant surface oxygen species (O-2(2-)/O-), a faster charge transfer rate, and a higher electrochemical surface area. In addition, the DFT calculation results show that the center of the O p-band of SCF-H is closer to the Fermi level than that of SCF-C, which leads to the better OER activity of SCF-H. This work finds that the new hexagonal structure perovskite may become a promising OER electrocatalyst.

Abstract:Cost-effective perovskite oxides have recently offered intriguing promise for electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems. Despite the breadth of previously studied electronic structures and properties, the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of perovskite oxides basically restrict their applications in metal–air batteries and electrolytic cells. In this work, we report on a highly efficient OER activity of perovskite-derived SrFeO3−δ (0.0 ≤ δ ≤ 1.0) single-crystal films by selectively tuning the Fe–O coordination structure and film orientation. Our findings show that the facile anionic oxygen-induced topotactic brownmillerite phase of the SrFeO2.5 film possesses superior electrocatalytic performance with a small overpotential and Tafel slope, which is mainly attributed to the peculiar Fe–O coordination framework along with ordered oxygen vacancy channels. Moreover, the low adsorption free energy and small charge transfer resistance could further boost the electrocatalytic OER performance of the (111)-oriented BM-SrFeO2.5 films. Abstract:Electrode materials with high activity and good stability are essential for commercialization of energy conversion systems such as solid oxide fuel cells or electrolysis cells at the intermediate temperature. Modifying the existing perovskite-based electrode surface to form a heterostructure has been widely applied for the rational design of novel electrodes with high performance. Despite many successful developments in enhancing electrode performance by surface modification, some controversial results are also reported in the literature and the mechanisms are still not well understood. In this work, the mechanism of how surface modification impacts the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and stability of perovskite-based oxides was investigated. We took La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3 (LSCF) as the thin-film model system and modified its surface with additive PrxCe1-xO2 layers of different thicknesses. We found a strong correlation between surface oxygen defects and the ORR activity of the heterostructure. By inducing higher oxygen vacancy concentration compared to bare LSCF, PrO2 coating is proved to greatly facilitate the rate of oxygen dissociation, thus significantly enhancing the ORR activity. Because of low oxygen vacancy density introduced by Pr0.2Ce0.8O2 and CeO2 coating, on the one hand, it does not boost the rate of ORR but successfully suppresses surface Sr segregation, leading to an enhanced durability. Our findings demonstrate the vital role of surface oxygen defects and provide important insights for the rational design of high-performance electrode materials through surface defect engineering.
Exfoliation of Layered Double Hydroxides for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Catalysis

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction is a key reaction in water splitting. The common approach in the development of oxygen evolution catalysts is to search for catalytic materials with new and optimized chemical compositions and structures. Here we report an orthogonal approach to improve the activity of catalysts without alternating their compositions or structures. Specifically, liquid phase exfoliation is applied to enhance the oxygen evolution activity of layered double hydroxides. The exfoliated single-layer nanosheets exhibit significantly higher oxygen evolution activity than the corresponding bulk layered double hydroxides in alkaline conditions. The nanosheets from nickel iron and nickel cobalt layered double hydroxides outperform a commercial iridium dioxide catalyst in both activity and stability. The exfoliation creates more active sites and improves the electronic conductivity. This work demonstrates the promising catalytic activity of single-layered double hydroxides for the oxygen evolution reaction.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) dominates the efficiency of electrocatalytic water splitting owing to its sluggish kinetics. Perovskite oxides (ABO3) have emerged as promising candidates to accelerate the OER process owing to their high intrinsic activities and tailorable properties. Fe ions in perovskite oxides have been proved to be a highly catalytic element for OER, while some Fe-based perovskites such as SrTi0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (STF) and La0.66Ti0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (LTF) exhibit inferior OER activity. Yet the essential reason is still unclear and the effective method to promote the activity of such perovskite is also lacking. Herein, an in-situ exsolution strategy was proposed to boost the OER by migrating Fe from the bulk to the surface. Significantly enhanced OER activity was achieved on STF and LTF perovskites with surface-decorated oxygen vacancies and Fe nanoparticles. In addition, theoretical calculation confirmed that the oxygen vacancies and Fe nanoparticle on surface could lower the overpotential of OER by facilitating the adsorption of OH−. From this study, migration of the active elements in perovskite is found to be an effective strategy to increase the quantity and activity of active sites, providing new insights and understanding for designing efficient OER catalysts.

Abstract:The adsorption of surface reactant hydroxyl and subsequent charge transfer are the cornerstones of alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Though exhibiting benign OER performance, the catalytic activity of perovskite oxides is restricted by their inferior specific area and insufficient hydroxyl affinity. Here, a novel architecture composed of a karren structure and hybrid phase was proposed to uplift the kinetic limitation of hydroxyl adsorption and charge transfer. As a proof-of-concept, the karren-structure perovskite-based compound (Pr0.5Ba0.25Sr0.25Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta-Co3O4) synthesized by facile molten-salt synthesis exhibits excellent OER activity with a low overpotential of 360 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) in 0.1 M KOH, and delivers 5-fold mass activity at 1.63 V relative to pristine perovskite Pr0.5Ba0.25Sr0.25Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta, outperforming various transition metal oxides and noble metal RuO2. With insights from physicochemical characterization and in situ electrochemical analysis, the interlinked karren structure is effective in providing active area and ion transfer channels for promoting the contact of hydroxyl with active sites, while the strong electronic interaction of the hybrid phase further favors the hydroxyl adsorption and charge transfer, synergistically expediting the sluggish OER kinetics. This work provides insights into the design of perovskite-based electrocatalysts with high performance via a synergistic structural modulation.
Insights into in situ surface reconstruction in cobalt perovskite oxides for enhanced catalytic activity

Abstract:An depth understanding of the fundamental interactions between surface termination and catalytic activity is crucial to prompt the properties of functional perovskite materials. The elastic energy due to size mismatch and electrostatic attraction of the charged Sr dopant by positively charged oxygen vacancies induced inert A-site surface enrichment rearrangement for perovskites. Lower temperatures could reduce A-site enrichment, but it is difficult to form perovskite crystals. La 0.8 Sr 0.2 CoO 3-δ (LSCO) as a model perovskite oxide was modified with additive urea to reduce the crystallization temperature, and suppress Sr segregation. The LSCO catalysts with 600 °C annealing temperature (LSCO-600) exhibited a 19.4-fold reaction reactivity of toluene oxidation than that with 800 °C annealing temperature (LSCO-800). Combined surface-sensitive and depth-resolved techniques for surface and sub-surface analysis, surface Sr enrichment was effectively suppressed due to decreased oxygen vacancy concentration and smaller electrostatic driving force. DFT calculations and in-situ DRIFTs spectra well revealed that tuning the surface composition/termination affected the intrinsic reactivity. The catalyst surface with lower Sr enrichment could easily adsorb toluene, cleave, and decompose benzene rings, thus contributing to toluene degradation to CO 2 . This work demonstrates a green and efficient way to control surface composition and termination at the atomic scale for higher catalytic activity.
