Abstract:An alkynyl-protected gold nanocluster [Au40(PhCC)20(dppm)4](SbF6)4 (dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane) (1) has been synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that the cluster has a face-centered cubic (FCC) Au34 kernel that is made up of two Au20 units via sharing a rectangular face. Two linear PhCC–Au–CCPh staple motifs are located around the central part of the Au34 core, and four L-shaped PhCC–Au–P^P staple motifs are located at the four corners of the Au34 core. Cluster 1 and [Au38(PhCC)20(PPh3)4](CF3SO3)2 both have the FCC Au34 core, and it is found that the diphosphine ligands bringing two more Au atoms into the system have significant effects on the optical properties and stability of the clusters. The combination of a diphosphine ligand and an alkynyl ligand is helpful in generating new ligand-protected metal nanoclusters.

Abstract:A novel phosphine-protected Au(20) nanocluster was isolated through the reduction of Au(PPhpy(2))Cl by NaBH(4) (PPhpy(2) = bis(2-pyridyl)-phenylphosphine). Its composition was determined to be [Au(20)(PPhpy(2))(10)Cl(4)]Cl(2), and single crystal X-ray structural analysis revealed that the Au(20) core can be viewed as being generated from the fusion of two Au(11) clusters via sharing two vertices. Optical absorption spectroscopy indicated this Au(20) has a large HOMO-LUMO gap (E(g) ≈ 2.24 eV). This is the first example of a ligand-protected gold nanocluster with a core generated from incomplete icosahedral Au(11) building units.

Abstract:AbstractFor the first time total structure determination of homoleptic alkynyl‐protected gold nanoclusters is reported. The nanoclusters are synthesized by direct reduction of PhC≡CAu, to give Au44(PhC≡C)28 and Au36(PhC≡C)24. The Au44 and Au36 nanoclusters have fcc‐type Au36 and Au28 kernels, respectively, as well as surrounding PhC≡C‐Au‐C2(Ph)Au‐C≡CPh dimeric “staples” and simple PhC≡C bridges. The structures of Au44(PhC≡C)28 and Au36(PhC≡C)24 are similar to Au44(SR)28 and Au36(SR)24, but the UV/Vis spectra are different. The protecting ligands influence the electronic structures of nanoclusters significantly. The synthesis of these two alkynyl‐protected gold nanoclusters indicates that a series of gold nanoclusters in the general formula Aux(RC≡C)y as counterparts to Aux(SR)y can be expected.
Homoleptic alkynyl-protected gold nanoclusters with unusual compositions and structures

Abstract:We report two novel homoleptic alkynyl-protected gold nanoclusters, which were synthesized by direct reduction of AuC=CR. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis reveals that they have compositions of Au-42(C CC6H4-2-CF3)(22) (1) and Au-50(C C6H4-3-F)(26) (2), respectively. Cluster 2 is the first Au-50 nanocluster, and the metal-to-ligand ratios of 1 and 2 are different from those of known Au-n(SR)(m) or Au-x(C CR)(y) nanoclusters. In addition, the metal kernels of these two clusters are built up unprecedented units. This work offers further insights into the synthesis of all-alkynyl-protected gold nanoclustersviaa direct reduction method.
Alkynyl-Protected Au-23 Nanocluster: A 12-Electron System

Abstract:A 23-gold-atom nanocluster was prepared by NaBH4-mediated reduction of a solution of PhC≡CAu and Ph3PAuSbF6 in CH2Cl2. The cluster composition was determined to be [Au23(PhC≡C)9(Ph3P)6](2+) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that the cluster has an unprecedented Au17 kernel protected by three PhC2-Au-C2 (Ph)-Au-C2 Ph motifs and six Ph3P groups. The Au17 core can be viewed as the fusion of two Au10 units sharing a Au3 triangle. Electronic structure analysis from DFT calculations suggests that the stability of this unusual 12-electron cluster is a result of the splitting of the superatomic 1D orbitals under D3h symmetry of the Au17 kernel. The discovery and determination of the structure of the Au23 cluster demonstrates the versatility of the alkynyl ligand in leading to the formation of new cluster compounds.

Abstract:Two unique silver nanoclusters protected by alkynyl and diphosphine ligands have been synthesized. Single crystal structural determination reveals that they have a centered anticuboctahedral Ag13 kernel. Such a kernel is observed for the first time in a coinage metal nanocluster. This work offers new insights into the fact that the PhC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C ligand represents a new direction in synthesizing novel metal nanoclusters.

Abstract:The synthesis and isolation of alkynyl/chloride-protected gold nanoclusters is described. Silica gel column chromatography is effective in isolating gold nanoclusters from the as-synthesized cluster mixture to give the clusters Na[Au25L18] (Au-25), [HNEt3](3)[Au67L32Cl4] (Au-67), [HNEt3](4)[Au106L40Cl12] (Au-106), L=3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)-phenylacetylide. Au-67 and Au-106 are new clusters; the structures were determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Au-67 contains a distorted Au-18 Marks decahedron shelled by an irregular Au-32 and further protected with two V-shaped Au2L3, 13 linear AuL2 staples and 4 chlorides. Au-67 is the first structurally determined 34e superatomic gold nanocluster. Au-106 is composed of 106 Au atoms co-protected by alkynyls and chlorides. It has a Au-79 kernel, like in Au-102(p-MBA)(44). The surface structure of Au-106 includes 20 linear Au-alkynyl staples, 5 Cl-Au-Cl and 2 Cl-Au motifs. These three gold nanoclusters show size-dependent electrochemical properties.

Abstract:AbstractAn alkynyl‐protected gold nanocluster [Au24(CCPh)14(PPh3)4](SbF6)2 has been prepared by a direct reduction method. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction reveals that the molecular structure contains a Au22 core that is made of two Au13‐centered cuboctahedra that share a square face. Two staple‐like PhCCAuCCPh motifs are located around the center of the rod‐like Au22 core. This Au24 nanocluster is highly emissive in the near‐infrared region with λmax=925 nm and the nature of the HOMO–LUMO transition is investigated by time‐dependent DFT calculations.

Abstract:A novel Au-19 nanocluster with a composition of [Au-19(PhC C)(9)(Hdppa)(3)](SbF6)(2) was synthesized (Hdppa = N,N-bis(diphenylphosphino)amine). Single crystal X-ray structural analysis reveals that the cluster comprises a centered icosahedral Au-13 core hugged by three V-shaped PhC C-Au-C C(Ph)-Au-C CPh motifs. Such motif is observed for the first time in an alkynyl-protected gold nanocluster. The Au-19 cluster shows two main optical-absorption bands at 1.25 and 2.25 eV, confirmed by time-dependent density functional theory. Orbital analysis indicates that PhC C- groups can actively participate in the frontier orbitals of the whole cluster. The new Au-19 cluster and the novel alkynyl-gold motif open the door to understanding the alkynyl-gold interface and discovering many potential members of this new class of gold clusters.

Abstract:A 'passivated precursor' approach is developed for the efficient synthesis and isolation of all‐alkynyl‐protected gold nanoclusters. Direct reduction of dpa‐passivated precursor Au‐dpa (Hdpa = 2,2'‐dipyridylamine) in one‐pot under ambient conditions gives a series of clusters including Au22(C≡CR)18 (R = ‐C6H4‐2‐F), Au36(C≡CR)24, Au44(C≡CR)28, Au130(C≡CR)50, and Au144(C≡CR)60. These clusters can be well separated via column chromatography. The overall isolation yield of this series of clusters is 40% (based on gold), which is much improved in comparison with previous approaches. It is notable that the molecular structure of the giant cluster Au130(C≡CR)50 is revealed, which presents important information for understanding the structure of the mysterious Au130 nanoclusters. Theoretical calculations indicated Au130(C≡CR)50 has a smaller HOMO‐LUMO gap than Au130(S‐C6H4‐4‐CH3)50. This facile and reliable synthetic approach will greatly accelerate further studies on all‐alkynyl‐protected gold nanoclusters.

Abstract:Bimetallic nanoclusters Au19Cu30 with chemical composition of [Au19Cu30(C CR)(22)(Ph3P)(6)Cl-2](NO3)(3) (where RC C is from 3-ethynylthiophene (H3C4S-3-C CH) or ethynylbenzene (PhC CH)) has been synthesized. Single X-ray structural analysis reveals that Au19Cu30 has a multishelled core structure of Au@Au-12@Cu-30@Au-6, comprising a centered icosahedral Au-13 (Au@Au-12) surrounded by an icosidodecahedral Cu-30 shell and an outmost shell of a chairlike hexagonal Au-6. The alkynyl carbon is bound to the hollow sites on the Au19Cu30 nanocluster surface, which is a novel interfacial binding mode in alkynyl-protected alloy nano clusters. The Cu-30 icosidodecahedron is unprecedented and Au19Cu30 represents the first alkynyl-protected Au-Cu alloy nanocluster.
A Chiral Gold Nanocluster Au20 Protected by Tetradentate Phosphine Ligands

Abstract:The chirality of a gold nanocluster can be generated from either an intrinsically chiral inorganic core or an achiral inorganic core in a chiral environment. The first structural determination of a gold nanocluster containing an intrinsic chiral inorganic core is reported. The chiral gold nanocluster [Au20(PP3)4]Cl4 (PP3=tris(2-(diphenylphosphino)ethyl)phosphine) has been prepared by the reduction of a gold(I)-tetraphosphine precursor in dichloromethane solution. Single-crystal structural determination reveals that the cluster molecular structure has C3 symmetry. It consists of a Au20 core consolidated by four peripheral tetraphosphines. The Au20 core can be viewed as the combination of an icosahedral Au13 and a helical Y-shaped Au7 motif. The identity of this Au20 cluster is confirmed by ESI-MS. The chelation of multidentate phosphines enhances the stability of this Au20 cluster.

Abstract:Great attention has been paid to nanoclusters having face-centered-cubic (fcc) metal kernels, because of the similarity of metal packing to that of bulk gold. So far, there is no precedent example of an all-alkynyl-protected fcc gold nanocluster with more than 100 gold atoms. We report the synthesis and total structure determination of an alkynyl-protected gold nanocluster [NEt3H]2[Au110(p-CF3C6H4C≡C)48] (Au110). It has an fcc Au86 kernel with 24 peripheral Au(C≡CR)2 staples. The Au86 kernel consists of six close packing layers in the pattern of Au6:Au16:Au21:Au21:Au16:Au6. Electronic absorption spectroscopy shows Au110 has a molecular-like discrete electronic structure, and transient absorption experiments reveal its nonmetallic nature.
Isolation and Total Structure Determination of an All‐Alkynyl‐Protected Gold Nanocluster Au144

Abstract:Total structure determination of a ligand-protected gold nanocluster, Au144 , has been successfully carried out. The composition of title nanocluster is Au144 (C≡CAr)60 (1; Ar=2-FC6 H4 -). The cluster 1 exhibits a quasi-spherical Russian doll-like architecture, comprising a Au54 two-shelled Mackay icosahedron (Au12 @Au42 ), which is further enclosed by a Au60 anti-Mackay icosahedral shell. The Au114 kernel is enwrapped by thirty linear ArC≡C-Au-C≡CAr staple motifs. The absorption spectrum of 1 shows two bands at 560 and 620 nm. This spectrum is distinctly different from that of thiolated Au144 , which was predicted to have an almost identical metal kernel and very similar ligands arrangement in 1. These facts indicate the molecule-like behavior of 1 and significant involvement of ligands in the electronic structure of 1. The cluster 1 is hitherto the largest coinage metal nanocluster with atomically precise molecular structure in the alkynyl family. The work not only addresses the concern of structural information of Au144 , which had been long-pursued, but also provides an interesting example showing ligand effects on the optical properties of ligand protected metal nanoclusters.

Abstract:AbstractAn alkynyl‐protected gold nanocluster, Au22(tBuC≡C)18 (1), has been synthesized and its structure has been determined by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. The molecular structure consists of a Au13 cuboctahedron kernel and three [Au3(tBuC≡C)4] trimeric staples. The cluster 1 has strong luminescence in the solid state with a 15 % quantum yield, and it displays interesting thermochromic luminescence as revealed by temperature‐dependent emission spectra. The enhanced room‐temperature emission is characterized as thermally activated delayed fluorescence.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of the clusters Au-13[PPh3](4)[S(CH2)(11)CH3](2)Cl-2 (1) and Au-13[PPh3](4)[S(CH2)(11)-CH3](4) (2) are described. These mixed-ligand, sub-nanometer clusters, prepared via exchange of dodecanethiol onto phosphine-halide gold clusters, show enhanced stability relative to the parent. The characterization of these clusters features the precise determination of the number of gold atoms in the cluster cores using high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, allowing the assignment of 13 gold atoms (+/- 3 atoms) to the composition of both cluster molecules. Electrochemical and optical measurements reveal discrete molecular orbital levels and apparent energy gaps of 1.6-1.7 eV for the two cluster molecules. The electrochemical measurements further indicate that the Au-13[PPh3](4)[S(CH2)(11)CH3](2)Cl-2 cluster undergoes an overall two-electron reduction. The electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of the two Au-13 cluster molecules are compared with those of a secondary synthetic product, which proved to be larger Au thiolate-derivatized monolayer-protected clusters with an average core of Au-180. The latter shows behavior fully consistent with the adoption of metallic-like properties.

Abstract:Ligand-protected metal nanoclusters as unique nanomaterials have attracted great attention. The protecting ligands that directly bind on the cluster surfaces are crucial in dictating the structures and properties of the clusters. In contrast to the extensively studied thiolates, alkynyl ligands have been found recently to be important ligands for passivating gold/silver cluster surfaces. In this Frontier article, recent advances in alkynyl-protected metal nanoclusters are overviewed, and the structures, luminescence and catalytic activities are also discussed. It is demonstrated that alkynyls are very promising ligands in the control of the structures and properties of gold/silver nanoclusters.
