Abstract:Sustainable transport modes such as walking are receiving growing attentions as societies become more aware of the importance of active non-motorized modes of transportation. However, pedestrians are the most vulnerable users as they are exposed to the traffic environments, especially at crosswalks. This study evaluated the pedestrians crossing behavior at s crosswalks by age and gender. The results showed that males are more likely to involve in red light running violation than females. Yong pedestrians have a higher probability to run the red light than elders. A Bayesian binary logit model was developed to identify how factors affected the violation rates of pedestrians at signalized intersection. Results show that age, gender, group size, cell phone use, pedestrian signal type, pedestrian volume, and pedestrian signal green ratio are statistically significant in the model. Furthermore, odds ratio techniques are used to quantitatively analyze the impacts of the interested factors on pedestrian red light running rates.
