Abstract:Chinese School of Comparative Literature, as an academic concept, is a term firstly presented by American scholar John J. Deeney. With the recovery of the comparative literature studies in mainland China in the late 1970s, the establishment and the development of Chinese School have been actively engaged in by the scholars in mainland. During the past 30 years both the characteristic theories and methods have been brought into discussion. The present paper roughly divides these 30 years into three phrases and studies all kinds of viewpoints on it, the major debates and the theorizing development of comparative literature in China. It concludes that at first what concerns Chinese school is its own internal theorizing issue, but later on it turns its focus gradually onto participating in global cultural communication and putting forward universal theories. The new theories, based on cross-civilization studies and variation theory, can be taken as the complementary of those of French and American and will promote the theorizing of comparative literature studies.

Abstract:In their article "About the Chinese School of Comparative Literature" He Lin and Danqing Huang discuss the development of the Chinese school of comparative literature since the 1980s. Lin and Huang describe how based on traditions in Chinese literary history, comparatists constructed a system of theoretical frameworks and methods. They argue that the Chinese School should not be criticized as "Chinacentric" just for the fact that its practitioners perform Chinese-Western comparative studies within its own historical and cultural context. Further, they defend the Chinese School by examining the achievements it has made in comparative poetics and the study of reception of Chinese literature in English-language cultures.

Abstract:Nearly all masters in the history of Chinese comparative literature are scholars who were versed in traditional Chinese culture,so the knowledge of cultural classics is the most rudimentary foundation for a qualified scholar in comparative literature.The well-known masters such as Wang Guowei,Zhu Guangqiang and Liu Ruoyu,made some mistakes because of their failures to properly deal with the relations between Chinese cultural classics and western literary discourse.With the adequate knowledge of cultural classics one is not necessarily qualified to do research on comparative literature,this can be seen in the failures of many academic masters.However,without the knowledge of the classics and only with the discourse of literary theories,one is still not necessarily qualified for comparative literature studies.Only when with the knowledge of both fields one may be qualified for it.That is,with our own academic norms as the subject,we make use of the West to be creative.Nowadays Both Chinese cultural classics and the discourse of literary theories are the agenda of comparative literature in the context of Chinese culture,because both of them serve the comparative literature and Chinese cultural construction.

Abstract:Academic creativity is a key part of contemporary Chinese cultural construction. The creation of Chinese School of comparative literature and the disciplinary theoretical formation across the world might be a typical example of academic creativity of the humanities and social sciences of China. The forming process of Chinese School of comparative literature is a creative process full of controversy in that since it was first proposed people have not agreed on its definition. The disagreement on the creation of Chinese School in fact is Eurocentric, which results in the dilemma of disciplinary "aphasia". In Europe it was with the strong disciplinary awareness that French School promoted the formation of its disciplinary system and its establishment. Therefore, the establishment of Chinese School of comparative literature is absolutely necessary, but the proposal for the establishment of Chinese School does not mean the fulfillment of academic creativity. We must come up with the ways to realize it. That Chinese School puts forward a number of themes such as "trans-cultural studies of the alien features", "cross-civilization", "aphasia", "studies of variation", the "foreignization of literature" as well as the "sinicization of Western literary theories" is the very way of academic creativity and also the concrete reflection of it. Academic creativity is fulfilled with the essence of both the West and the Chinese. We must find the foundation stone for academic creativity according to realistic basic issues with "I" as the subject. Meanwhile, we also should be creative with regard to academic methods. According to these statements, the author thinks that theoretical system of comparative literature of the third phase has been basically formed. The academic theoretical creativity of Chinese scholars is of great importance to comparative literature. In the meantime, there is much in their creative thinking and methods the humanities and social sciences could make use of.

Abstract:At present, there still remain defects in the sphere of theoretical studies in Comparative Literature. It is necessary for us to break through the diachronic description of comparative literature and to reorganize the available theoretical resources synchronically. Comparative Literature studies must pertain to one basic principle and four parts. The basic principle is "crossing", and the four parts are respectively the study of literary influence, the study of literary variation, parallel study, and general literary study.

Although heavily influenced by both Western and Soviet Marxist thought, twentieth-century Chinese literary theorization and criticism produced much incisive scholarship based on the vast knowledge existing in Chinese culture and literary scholarship. Abstract:As an important approach of comparative literature,American school sought to return the field to matters more directly concerned with literary criticism,instead of confining comparative research within the scope of historical research as what French school had demanded.In terms of research paradigm,unlike the French school which focused on the study of influences based on'correlated facts',American school highlighted the so-called'parallel studies' between literary works from different nations and clearly made'literariness as the center of comparative study.The theoretical horizon of American school and its idea of comparative literature as literary criticism kept the pace of world literature from 1950s and made a positive contribution to the development of comparative literature.

Abstract:The proposal of the Theory of Variation of Comparative Literature is a revolutionary change in the basic notion of comparative literature study in China. The present paper has tried to expound the proposal of this theory from the following three aspects: firstly, the proposal of this theory is to correct the misclassification of medio-translatology and imagology by integrating the disciplinary theories of comparative literature; secondly, this article sums up the core issue of academic research, differentiation, by reviewing deconstructionism and cross-civilization study; finally, this article takes heterogeneity as the basis of comparative study and puts forward that variation theory is to concentrate on heterogeneous elements in literary circulation and the variation phenomenon. In this way we may get a holistic consideration of all the elements in literary exchange on the basis of similarity and difference.

Abstract:Within the former Western framework of comparative literature theories, the justifiability of comparing literatures from different civilizations such as Eat and West was questioned. This was demonstrated overtly that there was no justifiability of comparing literatures of diverse civilizations in the former Western framework of theories. The proposal of the Variation Theory is a conceptual change in terms of the building of the discipline, which enables the study of Comparative Literature to transform from seeking homology to seeking heterogeneity. In other words, not only homology and affinity but also variation and heterogeneity should be the focus of the Variation Theory. Only when these aspects are organically combined together, will the discipline of Comparative Literature be satisfactorily built. The Variation Theory proposed by Chinese scholars is a great innovation and push to Chinese comparative theories and will exert great influence and value on the development of the world Comparative Literature.

Abstract:When it comes to methodologies of comparison between China and the West, it is difficult to recall many meaningful discussions based on the conventional, by now largely obsolete, textbook formula of “influence studies” and “parallel studies” as stock “methods” in comparative literature as an academic discipline.1 To compare, say, landscape poetry or female protagonists in Chinese and European literary traditions almost invariably leads to something too capricious or too general. Such studies often result in mere explanations, even descriptions, of cultural features or aesthetic distinctions standing outside the space of critical interpretation.

Abstract:This article provides a new thought about the theoritical system of current comparative literature in three aspects. Firstly, it points out the drawbacks and weaknesses of the 1st and 2nd phases of the development of this discipline, namely the positivist and non-positivist characteristic of influence study, and the lack of a "world mind" in parallel study by claiming that there' s no comparability between different cultures. Secondly, the cultural diversity should be highlighted as comparability since we should not only seek the common ground but also pay attention to the differences. The variation theory in comparative literature raised by the present author can help complete the theoretical system of comparative literature. Thirdly, this article points out that comparative literature will enter the phase of world literature, in which Chinese scholars will play an important role.

Abstract:Comparative literature has been where critical and theoretical interdisciplinary projects could be freely tried,with results that are exemplary for others and thus affect the direction of literary and cultural studies at large.In the current era,the first challenge for comparative literature is the necessity of a global perspective and the second one is posed by the rise of cultural studies,which is connected to the changes brought to literary studies by what we in the West have called just "theory".Comparative literature thus has become a discipline of such overwhelming scope that it no longer sounds like an academic field at all.Having in large measure made possible the expansion of literary studies into cultural studies,comparative literature might claim a new identity,as the site of literary study in its broadest dimensions — the study of literature as a transnational phenomenon.Comparative literature,as the site of the study of literature in general,would provide a home for a comparative poetics.Comparative literature needs to be transformed from a Eurocentric discipline to a more global one.

Abstract:Some people believe that the Discourse of Chinese literary theory merely covers the categories such as qi(Airs), fenggu (Wind and Bone), shen-yun (Spiritual Resonance), bi and xing (Analogy and Evocative Images), miao-wu (Marvelous Enlightenment) and yi-jing (Artistic Moods) etc. However, from a culture prospective we analyzed the traditional Chinese Literary theory and sort out that the Discourse of Chinese Literary theory is not the above-mentioned categories but its own way to express in literature, just as the ancient Chinese put it” What is written doesn’t give the fullness of what is/was said; what is/was said does not give thefullness of the concepts in the mind”. Therefore, the Chinese Scholarshave strongly believed that the only way to convey meaning is to“establish the Images”. It is this discourse that has been highlightedin the Chinese Literary theory. On the basis of the former research thepresent paper aims at furthering the study of dialogue between WesternLiterary theory and Chinese Literary Theory by making it more specificand systematic. And four basic principles and five methods of startingdialogue between the two are put forward as the result.
