Abstract:(1 − x ) Ba(Mg 1/3 Ta 2/3 )O 3 – x Ba(Co 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 (BMT–BCN, x = 0.0, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, 0.40) ceramics were prepared using the traditional solid-state reaction method. X-ray diffraction patterns have shown that the intensities of (001) and (100) super-lattices decrease with the increase in the BCN content. Seven main Raman vibrational modes are observed, assigned, and illustrated, in particular. Raman shifts of E g (O) modes and the FWHM values of F 2g (O)/A 1g (O) modes have close relationship with the dielectric properties. The calculated values by the four-parameter semiquantum model based on IR reflectivity match well with the measured data (@3.8 GHz), which means that most of dielectric contribution to the system may be ascribed to the absorption of structural phononic oscillations at the infrared region, and the contribution from the scattering of the defective phonons is small. The contributions of each vibrational mode on the dielectric responses were investigated in detail, indicating that the low-frequency modes (A 2u (1) and E u (1) ) have a decisive role to the dielectric properties.

Abstract:Complex ceramics Ba5-xLaxTixNb4-xO15 and Ba5-xLaxTixTa4-xO15(x=1,2,3)were prepared by conventional solid-state ceramic route. The structure characterized using XRD,Raman and microwave dielectric properties were measured. For both Nb-and Ta-based systems, the spctroscopic showed that the Ramanshift of [NbO6]/[TaO6]octahedral stretch vibration mode produced a shift to lower wavenumbers with increasing x value. ,also the intensity of A1g(O) in Nb-based system increased, however, its large splitting are observed for the stretching region in Ta-based system.The measured Q×f show increasing with La3+ and Ti4+ content .These results indicated an increase in the long-range ordering of B-cation with the substitutions of La3+ and Ti4+, also,the results of dielectric properties combine well with the Raman data:the behavior of Q×f of Ba5-xLaxTixNb4-xO15 and Ba5-xLaxTixTa4-xO15 system can be related to the variation of the stretching vibrations of [NbO6]/[TaO6] octahedra.

Abstract:A phase pure Ba(Mg 1/2 Mo 1/2 )O 3 (BMM) ceramic was prepared by a traditional solid-state reaction method with a double perovskite structure (Fm-3 m), which is confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The scanning electron microscope image of the BMM sample confirmed the presence of dense grains and clear grain boundaries. The Raman and far-infrared reflection spectra were measured, and the lattice vibrational modes were analyzed in detail. The intrinsic properties were fitted by the four-parameter semi-quantum model based on the far-infrared spectrum, whose values ( ε r = 4.728, tan δ = 4.594 × 10 –4 ) were analogous to the theoretical values ( ε r = 4.290, tan δ = 5.962 × 10 –4 ) calculated by the Clausius–Mossotti (C–M) and damping equations, as well as the measured values ( ε r = 4.468, tan δ = 4.439 × 10 –4 ).

Abstract:1:2 B-site cation ordered Ba(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 ceramic was synthesized using conventional solid-state reaction at 1600 °C for 12 h. The structure parameters were obtained through Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction data. The Raman peak frequencies were obtained by Lorenz fitting on Raman spectrum. Four-parameter semiquantum model was used to fit the infrared (IR) reflectivity spectrum, and the fitted parameters were used to calculate the dielectric permittivity ε and dielectric loss tanδ. A total of 9 active Raman and 16 active IR modes were obtained using first-principle calculations based on density functional theory with local density approximation. All of the vibrational modes were assigned and represented by linear combinations of the symmetry coordinates deduced using group theory analysis. The Raman mode with the highest frequency A1g(4) (789 cm−1) can be described as the breathing vibration of NbO6. The IR modes Eu(1) (149 cm−1) and A2u(2) (212 cm−1), which can be described as the twisting vibrations of Ba–MgO6/Ba–NbO6 on the a–b plane and the stretching vibrations of Ba–MgO6/Ba–NbO6 along the c direction, respectively, are the dominant contributing modes to ε and tanδ. The dielectric property parameters obtained using IR spectrum fittings, first-principal calculations, and microwave measurements were compared.

Abstract:Ba1+xMoO4 (-0.03 <= x <= 0.03) ceramics were fabricated by a conventional two-step sintering technique. X-ray diffraction patterns show that there appeared new diffraction peaks when x > 0, which were identified as Ba2MoO5. The Rietveld refinement results indicate that the unit cell volume is the largest at x = -0.02, because it has the lowest packing fraction and covalency. The far-infrared reflectivity (IR) spectra were fitted and analyzed for calculating the intrinsic properties, which comply well with the data obtained from microscopic polarizabilities and damping coefficient angle. The proportion of each mode in the dielectric response demonstrates that the BaO8, polyhedra have a decisive role on the dielectric properties. And based on the Raman modes, the internal relations of the structural-properties were revealed with the changes of Ba2+ content.

Abstract:Ba(Mg1/2W1/2)O3 ceramic was synthesized using a conventional solid-state reaction method at 1500 degrees C for 4h. The face-centered cubic crystal structure of the material was confirmed by Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction (XRD) data, and vibrational modes were obtained by Raman and Fourier transform far-infrared (FTIR) reflection spectroscopies. First-principle calculations based on density functional theory with local density approximation were used to calculate Gamma-point modes and dielectric properties of Ba(Mg1/2W1/2)O3. The Raman spectrum with nine active modes can be fitted with Lorentzian function, and the modes were assigned as F2g(1) (126cm-1), F2g(2) (441cm-1), Eg(O) (538cm-1), and A1g(O) (812cm-1). Far-infrared spectrum with 12 infrared active modes was fitted using both the Lorenz three-parameter classical and four-parameter semiquantum models. Consequently, the modes were assigned as F1u(1) (144cm-1), F1u(2) (284cm-1), F1u(3) (330-468cm-1), and F1u(4) (593-678cm-1). The active modes were represented by linear combinations of symmetry coordinates that were obtained by group theory analyses. The Raman mode A1g, which has the highest wave number (812cm-1) is dominated by the breath vibration of the MgO6 octahedron. The infrared modes F1u(2), that can be described as the inverted vibrations of Mg atoms in the MgO6 octahedron along the xi, yi, and zi axes have the most contributions to the microwave permittivity and dielectric loss.

Abstract:A 2 MgWO 6 (AMW, A = Ba, Sr, Ca) microwave dielectric ceramics were prepared by a traditional solid-phase synthesis method and then characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Raman, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The XRD results showed that the main phase of the Ba(Mg 1/2 W 1/2 )O 3 and Sr(Mg 1/2 W 1/2 )O 3 samples was cubic perovskite (Fm-3m) and that of the Ca(Mg 1/2 W 1/2 )O 3 sample was monoclinic perovskite (P2 1 /c). The SEM images showed that the Sr(Mg 1/2 W 1/2 )O 3 ceramic was composed of dense grains with a uniform particle distribution. It had a high degree of crystallinity, while the Ba(Mg 1/2 W 1/2 )O 3 ceramic had many pores, and the Ca(Mg 1/2 W 1/2 )O 3 ceramic had no obvious interfaces. The intrinsic properties were calculated by fitting the infrared spectra, which showed that the dielectric loss of the AMW ceramics was connected to the vibrations of the Mg/WO 6 octahedra, and the dielectric constants were related to the central symmetric vibrations of A-site cations. The dielectric response mechanism of the AMW microwave dielectric ceramics was revealed by the lattice vibration, and the relationships between the crystal structure and dielectric properties were studied based on lattice vibrations.

Abstract:Raman spectra analysis has been carried out for both the as-sintered and annealed Ba[(Mg1−xNix)1/3Nb2/3]O3 ceramics. Based on the harmonic resonant model, all the Raman modes are successfully assigned according to the effects of ion substitution and post-densification annealing. All of the as-sintered samples present 7 normal modes as predicted by factor group analysis; an extra mode at around 560 cm−1 exists in x = 0.6-1.0. The 3 modes Eg(O), Eg(Nb), A1g(Nb) between 150-350 cm−1 decrease in intensity with increasing x, agreeing well with the variation of ordering degree. By post-densification annealing for x = 0.4, a strong dependence on ordering degree has been proved for the A1g(O) mode at around 790 cm−1. For the as-sintered samples, the Q × f value correlates well with the oxygen octahedron stretch mode A1g(O), while the dielectric constant εr is dominated by ionic polarizability rather than the rigidity of the oxygen octahedra. After annealing, the Raman modes are intensified, corresponding to the enhancement of cations ordering. The annealing significantly increases the A1g(O) Raman shift and decreases the FWHM (full width at half maximum) of A1g(O) mode, resulting in the increase of εr and the improvement of Q × f value for each composition. The intensity ratio of A1g(Ba)+Eg(Ba) mode to A1g(O) mode increases after annealing, implying that A1g(Ba)+Eg(Ba) is more dominant in the ordered structure.
Far infrared reflection study on structure–property relationship of Ba[Mg(1−x)/3ZrxTa2(1−x)/3]O3 ceramics

Abstract:Ba[Mg(1−x)/3ZrxTa2(1−x)/3]O3 (BMZT, x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) solid solution ceramics were synthesized at 1520 °C for 3 h through the conventional solid-state reaction method. The ceramics were characterized by X-ray diffraction and Far-infrared spectroscopy (FIR) to evaluate the correlations among crystal structures, dielectric properties, and phonon modes. Results show that the FIR active modes near 290 and 415 cm−1 disappeared with increasing Zr4+ concentration, the frequencies of the modes near 230 and 540 cm−1 shifted toward high frequency and their intensities decreased, whereas the frequencies of the modes near 450 cm−1 reached a maximum value at x = 0.1. The crystal structures transformed from hexagonal to pseudo-cubic, and eventually to cubic structure, with increasing Zr4+ concentration. Correlations were established between crystal structures and dielectric properties with vibration modes as a media. The ceramics presented the best dielectric properties when x = 0.2 with a pseudo-cubic structure.

Abstract:Double perovskite structured Ba(Mg1/2Mo1/2)O3 (BMM) ceramics were prepared by traditional solid sintering methods at different sintering temperatures (Ts=1250–1325 °C). X-ray diffraction (XRD) data proved a 1:1 ordered face-centered cubic lattice (Fm-3 m), and the ceramic sintered at 1300 °C obtained maximum relative density. The lattice vibration characteristics were identified by Raman spectroscopy and far-infrared reflection spectroscopy. Based on the far-infrared data, a four-parameter semi-quantum model (FPSQ) was applied to calculate the intrinsic properties of BMM ceramics, and the obtained results approximated the measured values. The Raman shift of the BMM F2g(B) mode (attributed to the centrosymmetric vibration of Ba atom) was shown to be negatively correlated with the corrected permittivity and Ba-O bond length. With increasing sintering temperature (Ts), the relative density is positively correlated with the quality factor (Q × f), and the change of Ba-O bond length leads to distortion of the oxygen octahedron, which is positively correlated with the dielectric constant. The sintered BMM ceramics obtained their best dielectric properties at 1300 °C (εr = 4.987, Q × f = 23,069 GHz, f = 11.16 GHz).

Abstract:The structural and microwave dielectric properties of Ba5-xLaxTixNb4-xO15 (1 <= x <= 3) was investigated. The single phase with A(5)B(4)O(15)-type cation-deficient hexagonal perovskite structure was obtained over the whole composition range. These ceramics have high dielectric constant up to 56, high quality factors (Qxf) up to 35,000, and low temperature coefficient of resonant frequencies (tau(f)) in the range +69 to -3 ppm degrees C-1. The dielectric constants and tau(f) of these ceramics gradually decrease parallel to an increase in B-site bond valence with increasing La and Ti content.

Abstract:In this study, the influences of substitution of Sm3+ for Nd3+ on the crystal structure, Raman spectroscopy and microwave dielectric properties in Ba3.75Nd9.5Ti17.5(Cr1/2Nb1/2)(0.5)O-54 (BNTCN) ceramics were investigated. The XRD results showed that all Ba3.75Nd9.5-xSmxTi17.5(Cr1/2Nb1/2)(0.5)O-54 (BNTCN-Sx) samples were crystallized as the orthorhombic tungsten-bronze type like structure. The unit cell volume of samples decreased as x increased, and the blue shift of Raman spectral peaks (A(g(1)) and B-g) also confirmed this result. Moreover, the increase of tilt angles indicated that more and more oxygen octahedra became more tilted, consequently leading to the decrease of temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (tau(f)) with increase of x value. The packing fraction and Qxf value of BNTCN-Sx ceramics reached the maximum value, whereas the FWHM of A(g(1)) and internal strain eta reached the minimum value at x = 3. The low internal strain resulted from stability of the crystal structure, which was conducive to improvement of Qxf value in the BNTCN-Sx ceramics. At last the BNTCN-Sx ceramics sintered at 1380 degrees C for 4 h exhibited excellent microwave dielectric properties: epsilon(r) = 83.6, Qxf = 11.597 GHz, and tau(f) = +1.3 ppm/degrees C when x = 4. Abstract:A complex perovskite Ba(Mg1/3Ta2/3)O-3 (BMT) ceramic sample with an almost ideal ordering of B-site cations was prepared by the conventional solid-state reactions and its infrared (IR) reflective spectrum in the range 50-5000 cm(-1) was measured at room temperature. IR symmetry coordinates and their polar directions of the BMT sample were analyzed based on group theory. Eigenfrequencies, intensities, and transverse optical mode and longitudinal optical mode splitting of 16 IR vibrational modes were obtained based on the first-principle calculation and these modes were represented by the linear combinations of the symmetry coordinates. Far infrared reflection spectrum of BMT ceramic sample was fitted by the four-parameter semiquantum model (FPSQ) and assigned based on the calculation results. Generally, the heavier atoms with lower valence have more contributions to the lower frequency modes, while lighter atoms or higher valence atoms often have more contributions to the higher frequency modes. FPSQ fitting shows that the modes E-u((5)) (similar to 241 cm (1)) and E-u((4)) (similar to 220 cm(-1)) dominated by the vibration of high-valence cation Ta5+ in [TaO6] octahedra play the most important role for dielectric constant e and dielectric loss tan delta.

Abstract:The Raman, infrared reflectivity and terahertz spectra of A-site deficient scheelite materials (Ca1−3xBi2xΦx)MoO4 (Φ: A-site vacancy) were studied to evaluate the correlation between the vibrational modes and the dielectric properties. The Raman spectra were fitted with the Lorentzian model and the changes of resonance frequencies and full width at half maximum of the resonance were discussed. With the substitution of Bi into the A site of CaMoO4, the associated ionic compensation produces an increase in disorder which can contribute to an increase in dielectric losses. The harmonic oscillator model was used to fit infrared reflectivity spectra and the obtained complex dielectric response was extrapolated down into the terahertz and microwave region. The contributions of each mode to the microwave dielectric properties were investigated. It was found that the modes at low frequencies which are related to AO8 polyhedra play the most important role in the microwave dielectric properties of (Ca1−3xBi2xΦx)MoO4.

Abstract:New dielectric ceramics Ba5 + nTi n Nb4O15 + 3n (n = 1,2,3) with cation-deficient hexagonal perovskite-related structure were prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction route. The phase and structure of the ceramics were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The microwave dielectric properties of the ceramics were studied using a network analyzer. These ceramics show dielectric constant (ε r ) of in the range of 45.1–48.6, τ f in the range +59 to +175 ppm°C− 1, and high quality factors with Q×f values up to 22882. The values of ε r and τ f of the ceramics gradually increase as the number of n increases.

Abstract:BaMoO4 ceramic was prepared using a conventional solid-sintering method. It was observed that the sample is a pure BaMoO4 with a tetragonal scheelite structure by analyzing X-ray diffraction data. Scanning electron microscopy characterized the dense sample with uniform grains. The phonon modes were analyzed by Raman and Far-infrared reflection spectra, and the phonon characteristics were studied. The intrinsic properties of the sample were calculated by the four-parameter semi-quantum model as well as the Clausius-Mosotti & damping equations, and the results were of epsilon(r) = 9.388 and tan delta = 4.760 x 10(-4), epsilon(r) = 9.798 and tan delta = 6.445 x 10(-4), respectively, which agrees well with the experimental values (epsilon(r) = 9.84, tan delta = 5.0 x 10(-4)). The contributions to dielectric properties of each mode were investigated, and the results indicate that the external mode (E-u) yield greatest contribution to intrinsic permittivity and loss. Abstract:Lead-free (Ba1-xCax)(Ti0.95Zr0.05)O-3 (x = 0.05-0.40) (BCZT) ceramics were prepared by solid-state reaction technique. XRD results show that the samples in the composition range of 0.05 <= x <= 0.25 exhibit pure perovskite structures and undergo a polymorphic phase transitions from orthorhombic to tetragonal phase around room temperature. The biphasic structures are detected at x >= 0.30 and the dielectric peaks become broad and dielectric constants decrease with increasing Ca content. Ca replacement at Ba site leads to diffuseness, whereas Ca occupancy at Ti site leads to decrease of the T-c. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The structural and microwave dielectric properties of Ba 5− x La x Ti x Nb 4− x O 15 (1 ≤ x ≤ 3) was investigated. The single phase with A 5 B 4 O 15 -type cation-deficient hexagonal perovskite structure was obtained over the whole composition range. These ceramics have high dielectric constant up to 56, high quality factors ( Q × f ) up to 35,000, and low temperature coefficient of resonant frequencies ( τ f ) in the range +69 to −3 ppm °C −1 . The dielectric constants and τ f of these ceramics gradually decrease parallel to an increase in B-site bond valence with increasing La and Ti content.
