Abstract:Flexible manipulation of terahertz wave polarizations during the generation process is very important for terahertz applications, especially for the next‐generation on‐chip functional terahertz sources. However, current terahertz emitters cannot satisfy such demand, hence calling for new mechanisms and conceptually new terahertz sources. Here an efficient and broadband terahertz source with magnetic‐field‐controlled flexible switching for the polarizations between linear and elliptical states in ferromagnetic heterostructures driven by femtosecond laser pulses is demonstrated. More importantly, the chirality, azimuthal angle, and ellipticity of the generated elliptical terahertz wave can be precisely manipulated by harnessing external magnetic fields via effectively tailoring the photoinduced spin currents. Such an ultrafast photomagnetic interaction‐based, magnetic‐field‐controlled, and broadband tunable solid‐state terahertz source integrated with polarization tunability functions not only provides the capability to reveal physical mechanisms of femtosecond spin dynamics, but also demonstrates the feasibility to realize novel on‐chip terahertz functional devices, boosting the potential applications for controlling elementary molecular rotations, phonon vibrations, spin precessions, high‐speed communications, and accelerating the development of ultrafast terahertz optospintronics.

Abstract:Strong-field terahertz (THz) light-matter interaction provides various nonlinear control approaches in condensed matter physics, energy and material sciences, electron acceleration, and manipulation. Recently developed spintronic THz emission with minimum complexities has been demonstrated to have the capability for generating high field strengths. Up to now, nonlinear applications based on the spintronic THz transients have yet been realized. Here, we report THz emission from two-color femtosecond laser plasma filaments modulated by a 60-kV/cm THz pulse from W/CoFeB/Pt heterostructures. Enhanced THz radiation based on electron acceleration in plasma is recorded when the direction of the spintronic THz modulating field is in line with that of the electron movement. This behavior is quantitatively reproduced by a local current model of the plasma THz source. Our experimental and theoretical results may inspire further nonlinear THz investigation and accelerate ultrafast THz engineering in matter.

Abstract:Spintronic terahertz(THz)emitters offer distinct advantages such as high efficiency,ultrabroadband capability,low cost,and easy integration.These emitters find applications not only in THz time-domain spectrometers driven by high-repetition-rate laser oscillators but also in the generation of intense THz electromagnetic pulses powered by high-energy femtosecond laser amplifiers.They have proven valuable in THz spectroscopy imaging and the exploration of strong-field THz physics.However,previous research on spintronic THz radiation mechanisms and device development relies primarily on far-field THz time-domain spectroscopy.The results of this approach present average THz emission information for the laser-pumped spot areas,which does not provide any insights into ultrafast spin currents and THz emission properties for the materials at micro-and nano-scales.In this study,we employ ultrafast THz scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy,driven by a femtosecond fiber laser oscillator,to investigate the spintronic terahertz emission properties of the ferromagnetic heterojunction material W/CoFeB/Pt at nanoscale.The utilization of this technology enables the detection of high signal-to-noise ratio spintronic THz emission at transverse scales as small as hundreds nanometers.This novel approach explores the generation,detection,and manipulation of ultrafast spin currents at THz frequencies with nano-spatial resolution.This study may inspire innovative ideas for the advancement of ultrafast THz spin optoelectronics.

Abstract:Due to its high sensitivity and because it does not rely on the magneto-optical response, terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy has been used as a powerful time-resolved tool for investigating ultrafast demagnetization and spin current dynamics in nanometer-thick ferromagnetic (FM)/heavy metal (HM) heterostructures. Here, by changing the order of the conductive HM coating on the FM nanometer film, the dominant electric dipole contribution to the laser-induced THz radiation can be unraveled from the ultrafast magnetic dipole. Furthermore, to take charge equilibration into account, we separate the femtosecond laser-induced spin-to-charge converted current and the instantaneous discharging current within the illuminated area. The THz emission spectroscopy gives us direct information into the coupled spin and charge dynamics during the first moments of the light–matter interaction. Our results also open up new perspectives to manipulate and optimize the ultrafast charge current for promising high-performance and broadband THz radiation.

Abstract:Terahertz emission spectroscopy of ultrathin multilayers of magnetic and heavy metals has recently attracted much interest. This method not only provides fundamental insights into photoinduced spin transport and spin-orbit interaction at highest frequencies but has also paved the way to applications such as efficient and ultrabroadband emitters of terahertz electromagnetic radiation. So far, predominantly standard ferromagnetic materials have been exploited. Here, by introducing a suitable figure of merit, we systematically compare the strength of terahertz emission from X/Pt bilayers with X being a complex ferro-, ferri- and antiferromagnetic metal, that is, dysprosium cobalt (DyCo$_5$), gadolinium iron (Gd$_{24}$Fe$_{76}$), Magnetite (Fe$_3$O$_4$) and iron rhodium (FeRh). We find that the performance in terms of spin-current generation not only depends on the spin polarization of the magnet's conduction electrons but also on the specific interface conditions, thereby suggesting terahertz emission spectroscopy to be a highly surface-sensitive technique. In general, our results are relevant for all applications that rely on the optical generation of ultrafast spin currents in spintronic metallic multilayers.

Abstract:The ability to generate, detect, and control coherent terahertz (THz) spin currents with femtosecond temporal and nanoscale spatial resolution has significant ramifications. The diffraction limit of concentrated THz radiation, which has a wavelength range of 5 {\mu}m-1.5 mm, has impeded the accumulation of nanodomain data of magnetic structures and spintronic dynamics despite its potential benefits. Contemporary spintronic optoelectronic apparatuses with dimensions 100 nm presented a challenge for researchers due to this restriction. In this study, we demonstrate the use of spintronic THz emission nanoscopy (STEN), which allows for the efficient injection and precise coherent detection of ultrafast THz spin currents at the nanoscale. Furthermore, STEN is an effective method that does not require invasion for characterising and etching nanoscale spintronic heterostructures. The cohesive integration of nanophotonics, nanospintronics, and THz-nano technology into a single platform is poised to accelerate the development of high-frequency spintronic optoelectronic nanodevices and their revolutionary technical applications.

Abstract:Through the incorporation of W‐Co20Fe60B20‐Pt heterostructure films using sequential and inverse deposition techniques, a 180° phase difference across a vast frequency spectrum is successfully acheived. As a result, control is gained over the spatial phase of terahertz radiation, which subsequently enabled it to focus the beam, generate vortexes, and divide beams simultaneously. The utilization of spintronic terahertz (THz) emitters has a significant influence on broadband coherent spectroscopy and imaging at THz frequencies. By using femtosecond light to irradiate the spintronic heterostructures, spin currents from the ultrafast demagnetization effect can be transformed into charge currents through the inverse spin Hall effect, leading to the emission of THz waves. In this work, through the incorporation of sequential and inverse deposition of W‐Co20Fe60B20‐Pt heterostructure films, control is gained over the spin currents and THz waveforms, enabling it to achieve a 180° phase difference across a broad frequency spectrum while efficiently radiating THz waves. This, in turn, allows it to control the spatial phase of THz radiation. To test the device's capabilities, lithography‐based devices capable of focusing, producing vortexes, and dividing beams are manufactured. This investigation aims to advance the development of THz pulse sources while providing essential support for cutting‐edge technologies such as THz spectroscopy, high‐resolution imaging, and high‐speed communications.

Powerful Terahertz Emission from Laser Wakefields in Inhomogeneous Magnetized Plasmas

Abstract:Powerful coherent terahertz (THz) pulses with a broad spectrum (0.1-3 THz) can be produced from a laser-driven wakefield through linear mode conversion in inhomogeneous magnetized plasmas with the maximum plasma density of 10(17) cm(-3). This occurs when a laser pulse, with an optimized duration about 300 fs, is incident either normally or obliquely to the density gradient of inhomogeneous magnetized plasmas. The external dc magnetic field has a magnitude of a few tesla. By changing the strength and direction of the magnetic field, one can enhance or suppress the THz emission. The maximum energy conversion efficiency in the magnetized plasmas can be double that in the unmagnetized plasmas. Such wakefield emission can be a powerful THz source at the MW level and capable of affording field strength of a few MV/cm, suitable for THz nonlinear physics. Because these THz emissions are always with a positive chirp, with a proper dispersion compression, single-cycle THz pulses can be generated with higher peak powers and field strengths.
One-dimensional Photonic Crystal Structure Enhanced External-Magnetic-Field-Free Spintronic Terahertz High-Field Emitter

Abstract:Intense terahertz (THz) radiation in free space offers multifaceted capabilities for accelerating electron, understanding the mesoscale architecture in (bio)materials, elementary excitation and so on. Recently popularized spintronic THz emitters (STEs) with their versatility such as ultra-broadband, cost-effectiveness, large-size and ease for-integration have become one of the most promising alternative for the next generation of intense THz sources. Nevertheless, the typical W| Co20Fe60B20 | Pt necessitates an external-magnetic-field to saturate magnetization for stable operation, limiting its scalability for achieving higher THz field with uniform distribution over larger sample areas. Here we demonstrate the methodologies of enhancing the high-field THz radiation of external-magnetic-field-free IrMn3 | Co20Fe60B20 |W heterostructure via optimizing the substrate with superior thermal conductivity and integrating a one-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) structure to maximize the radiation efficiency. Under the excitation of a Ti: sapphire femtosecond laser amplifier with central wavelength of 800 nm, pulse duration of 35 fs, and repetition rate of 1 kHz and maximum single pulse energy of 5.5 mJ, we successfully generate intense THz radiation with focal peak electric field up to 1.1 MV/cm with frequency range covering 0.1-10 THz without external-magnetic-fields. These high-field STEs will also enable other applications such as ultra-broadband high-field THz spectroscopy and polarization-based large-size strong-field THz imaging.

Coherent Terahertz Radiation Via Ultrafast Manipulation of Spin Currents in Ferromagnetic Heterostructures

Abstract:The development of efficient terahertz (THz) radiation sources is driven by the scientific and technological applications. To date, as far as the radiation of THz pulses is concerned, the widely used methods are biased semiconductor, electro-optical crystal and air plasma, which are excited separately by femtosecond laser pulses. The mechanisms involved in these THz sources are photo-carrier acceleration, second order nonlinear effect, and plasma oscillations, respectively. Here, we report the generation of coherent THz radiation in the designed ferromagnetic/non-magnetic metallic W/CoFeB/Pt and Ta/CoFeB/Pt trilayers on SiO2 substrates, excited separately by ultrafast laser pulses. The transient THz electric field is fully inverted when the magnetization is reversed, which indicates a strong connection between THz radiation and spin order of the sample. We present the THz radiation results of the bilayers, CoFeB/W, CoFeB/Pt and CoFeB/Ta, which are comprised of the trilayer heterostructures used in our experiments. We find that all experimental results are in good agreement with the results from the inversed spin-Hall effect (ISHE) mechanism. Owing to the ISHE, the transient spin current converts into a transient transverse charge current, which launches the THz electromagnetic wave. In our experiments, W or Ta has an opposite spin Hall angle to Pt. Therefore, the amplitude of the THz emission can be increased by a constructive superposition of two charge currents in metallic layers. Our results indicate that the peak-values of the THz radiation covering the 0-2.5 THz range from W/CoFeB/Pt and Ta/CoFeB/Pt are stronger than that from 0.5 mm thick ZnTe (110) crystal, under very similar excitation conditions. Finally, we investigate the dependence of peak-to-peak values for two different heterostructures on the pump fluence. The saturations of THz pulse at pump fluences of~0.47 mJ/cm2 and~0.61 mJ/cm2 are found for W/CoFeB/Pt and Ta/CoFeB/Pt heterostructures, respectively. The saturation can be generally attributed to the spin accumulation effect and laser-induced thermal effect. Our results indicate that the spin accumulation effect, by which the density of spin-polarized electrons is restricted in a non-magnetic metallic layer, is slightly less pronounced for Ta/CoFeB/Pt system at high fluences. Our findings provide a new pathway for fabricating the spintronic THz emitter, which is comparable to the conventional nonlinear optical crystals.

Abstract:Employing electron spin instead of charge to develop spintronic devices holds the merits of low-power consumption in information technologies. Meanwhile, the demand for increasing speed in spintronics beyond current CMOS technology has further triggered intensive researches for ultrafast control of spins even up to unprecedent terahertz regime. The femtosecond laser has been emerging as a potential technique to generate an ultrafast spin-current burst for magnetization manipulation. However, there is a great challenge to establish all-optical control and monitor of the femtosecond transient spin current. Deep insights into the physics and mechanism are extremely essential for the technique. Here, we demonstrate coherently nonthermal excitation of femtosecond spin-charge current conversion parallel to the magnetization in W/CoFeB/Pt heterostructures driven by linearly polarized femtosecond laser pulses. Through systematical investigation we observe the terahertz emission polarization depends on both the magnetization direction and structural asymmetry. We attribute this phenomenon of the terahertz generation parallel to the magnetization induced by linearly polarized femtosecond laser pulses probably to inverse spin-orbit torque effect. Our work not only is beneficial to the deep understanding of spin-charge conversion and spin transportation, but also helps develop novel on-chip terahertz opto-spintronic devices.

Abstract:Experimental investigations of ultrafast electro-optical properties in magnetic materials manifest their great potential for emerging spintronic optoelectronic devices. Here, using time-resolved terahertz emission spectroscopy, we construct a spintronic terahertz emitter consisting of an IrMn3/Ni−Fe heterojunction. A femtosecond spin current pulse is generated in the thin film of the Ni−Fe layer when it absorbs a femtosecond laser pulse, and then the spin current is converted into a transient charge current by the metallic IrMn3 layer on picosecond timescales. We timely record the terahertz emission associated with this ultrafast conversion process by means of electro-optic sampling. Besides, the spin-to-charge conversion efficiency of the IrMn3/Ni−Fe heterojunction is determined via quantitative analysis of the spin torque ferromagnetic resonance results. We have both optically verified and electrically studied the spin-to-charge conversion of the IrMn3/Ni−Fe heterojunction. Our results enlarge the material choice range of spintronic terahertz emitters, which may promote further investigations of ultrafast spin-to-charge conversion in different heterojunction materials. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.16.024058 © 2021 American Physical Society

Abstract:Generation of intense coherent THz radiation by obliquely incidenting an intense laser pulse on a wire target is studied using particle-in-cell simulation. The laser-accelerated fast electrons are confined and guided along the surface of the wire, which then acts like a current-carrying line antenna and under appropriate conditions can emit electromagnetic radiation in the THz regime. For a driving laser intensity ∼3×10^{18}W/cm^{2} and pulse duration ∼10 fs, a transient current above 10 KA is produced on the wire surface. The emission-cone angle of the resulting ∼0.15 mJ (∼58 GV/m peak electric field) THz radiation is ∼30^{∘}. The conversion efficiency of laser-to-THz energy is ∼0.75%. A simple analytical model that well reproduces the simulated result is presented.

Opto-spintronic terahertz emitters, composed of nanometer-thin magnetic multilayer, can produce high-quality broad-band terahertz pulses. Integration of opto-spintronic terahertz emitters onto the silicon wafers is the first step towards their usage in modern photonic devices. In this work, Ta/CoFeB/Ir heterostructures are deposited on thermally oxidized silicon wafers by dc magnetron sputtering. Under the illumination of a femtosecond laser pulse on the Ta/CoFeB/Ir trilayer heterostructure grown on silicon substrate, a spin current can be generated in the ferromagnetic layer due to the ultrafast demagnetization. The spin current is transported and injected into the neighboring non-magnetic metal layers of Ta and Ir. Consequently, the spin current can be converted into the charge current due to the strong spin-orbit coupling. The sub-picosecond transient charge current gives rise to the terahertz radiation that enters into the free space. The terahertz electric field is fully inverted when the magnetization is reversed, which indicates a strong connection between THz radiation and spin order of the heterostructure. The THz radiation from Ta/CoFeB/Ir heterostructure covers the 0.1–2.5 THz frequency range with a maximum value of about 0.64 THz. We also investigate the dependence of THz peak-to-peak value on the pump fluence. Abstract:To explore the capabilities of metallic spintronic thin-film stacks as a source of intense and broadband terahertz electromagnetic fields, we excite a W/CoFeB/Pt trilayer on a large-area glass substrate (diameter of 7.5 cm) by a femtosecond laser pulse (energy 5.5 mJ, duration 40 fs, wavelength 800 nm). After focusing, the emitted terahertz pulse is measured to have a duration of 230 fs, a peak field of 300 kV cm$^{-1}$ and an energy of 5 nJ. In particular, the waveform exhibits a gapless spectrum extending from 1 to 10 THz at 10% of amplitude maximum, thereby facilitating nonlinear control over matter in this difficult-to-reach frequency range and on the sub-picosecond time scale.

Abstract:Understanding the ultrafast excitation, detection, transportation, and manipulation of nanoscale spin dynamics in the terahertz (THz) frequency range is critical to developing spintronic THz optoelectronic nanodevices. However, the diffraction limitation of the sub-millimeter waves – THz wavelengths – has impaired experimental investigation of spintronic THz nano-emission. Here, we present an approach to studying laser THz emission nanoscopy from W|CoFeB|Pt metasurfaces with ∼60-nm lateral spatial resolution. When comparing with statistic near-field THz time-domain spectroscopy with and without the heterostructures on fused silica substrates, we find that polarization- and phase-sensitive THz emission nanoscopy is more sensitive than the statistic THz scattering intensity nanoscopy. Our approach opens explorations of nanoscale ultrafast THz spintronic dynamics in optically excited metasurfaces.

Abstract:Free-space super-strong terahertz (THz) electromagnetic fields offer multifaceted capabilities for reaching extreme nonlinear THz optics, accelerating and manipulating charged particles, and realizing other fascinating applications. However, the lack of powerful solid-state THz sources with single pulse energy >1 mJ is impeding the proliferation of extreme THz applications. The fundamental challenge lies in hard to achieve high efficiency due to high intensity pumping caused crystal damage, linear absorption and nonlinear distortion induced short effective interaction length, and so on. Here, through cryogenically cooling the crystals, delicately tailoring the pump laser spectra, chirping the pump pulses, and magnifying the laser energies, we first successfully realized the generation of 1.4-mJ THz pulses lithium niobates under the excitation of 214-mJ femtosecond laser pulses via tilted pulse front technique. The 800 nm-to-THz energy conversion efficiency reached 0.7%, and a free-space THz peak electric and magnetic fields reached 6.3 MV/cm and 2.1 Tesla. Our numerical simulations based on a frequencydomain second-order nonlinear wave equation under slowly varying envelope approximation reproduced the experimental optimization processes. To show the capability of this super-strong THz source, nonlinear absorption due to field-induced intervalley scattering effect in high conductive silicon induced by strong THz electric field was demonstrated. Such a high energy THz source with a relatively low peak frequency is very appropriate not only for electron acceleration towards table-top X-ray sources but also for extreme THz science and nonlinear applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate high performance spintronic terahertz emitters enabled by photonic structures. Metal-dielectric photonic crystal structures are employed to overcome the intrinsic limitation on laser absorption in individual ultrathin active layers. As the induced transient charge currents in each period are in phase, the magnitude of THz emissions are significantly enhanced with the increased laser absorption.

Abstract:We report a THz emitter with excellent performances based on nonmagnetic (NM) and ferromagnetic (FM) heterostructures. The spin currents are first excited by the femtosecond laser beam in the NM/FM bilayer, and then transient charge currents are generated by inverse spin Hall effect, leading to THz emission out of the structure. The broadband THz waves emitted from our film stacks have a peak intensity exceeding 500 um thick ZnTe crystals (standard THz emitters). Our device is insensitive to the polarization of an incident laser beam which indicates the noise resistive feature. In contrast, the polarization of THz waves is fully controllable by an external magnetic field. We have also fabricated the devices on flexible substrates with a great performance, and demonstrated that the devices can be driven by low power lasers. Together with the low cost and mass productive sputtering growth method for the film stacks, the proposed THz emitters can be readily applied to a wide range of THz equipment. Our study also points towards an alternative approach to characterize spintronic devices with NM/FM bilayers.
