Abstract:We explore the effect of initial public offering (IPO) capital allocation on corporate innovation. We document that IPOs enhance corporate innovation through allocation of internal capital to innovative projects. While political connections moderate the IPO-innovation relation in that connected firms allocate less IPO capital to innovative projects and are more likely to reallocate their resource from innovative to non-innovative projects. Resource allocation to innovative projects results in better post-IPO performance, especially in non-connected firms. Overall, this study identifies intra-firm capital allocation as an important factor that contribute to firm innovation and the distortion of resource allocation linked to political ties.

Results show that,corporate political connection is positively associated with a firm’s innovative performance,and its effect is even stronger for private firms and big firms. Moreover,political connection may improve a firm’s knowledge acquisition and knowledge combination,thus enhance the innovative performance of the firm.

Abstract:Aiming to have a deeper understanding of innovation in emerging economies, this article investigates the relationship between political connections and research and development (R&D) intensity of Chinese enterprises. In particular, we examine the moderating effects of firm-level factors (i.e., financial slack and state ownership) and regional-level institutional development from the motivation-opportunity-ability perspective. Using a panel dataset of 1010 Chinese enterprises between 2008 and 2014, we find that political connections have a negative effect on R&D intensity. We further observe that this negative effect is attenuated when firms have less financial slack or are state-owned enterprises. Nevertheless, institutional development does not significantly influence the impact of political connections on R&D intensity. This article extends the innovation management literature by providing insights into the relationship between political connections and R&D intensity as well as its boundary conditions in an emerging economy context.

Abstract:We propose that despite the general positive impact of maintaining political connections, internet utilization generates a disconnecting effect on the impacts of political connections on firm innovation. Using a unique survey dataset of Chinese private enterprises, the present study found that private firm owners’ internet use moderates the relationship between political connections and firm innovation. The present study therefore enriches the literature on the effects of political connections and resource-based view by discovering that internet technology disconnects firms’ political connections and substitutes for the function of political connections on information search and resource acquisition.

Abstract:This study uses government officials' corporate site visits as a measurement of political connection and examines how political connection affects firm performance. Using a novel dataset on government officials' site visits from 2004 to 2014, we find that firm performance increases following corporate site visits by government officials. This study finds that firms obtain more new investment projects and bank loans, improve corporate governance, and decrease information asymmetry as well. Government officials' site visits are also associated with positive abnormal stock returns, indicating that investors interpret government officials' site visits as a signal of government endorsement and support. Using China's recent anti-corruption campaign as an exogenous shock, we find that political connections are more valuable in the absence of political corruption.

Abstract:Drawing on political connection literature, we distinguish two types of political ties, horizontal (i.e., block ties with regions) and vertical (i.e., line ties with departments), and examine their effects on firm innovation. Based on a panel of Chinese public-listed private firms, we find that firms whose executives have block ties innovate much less than those without such ties, particularly when they are located in regions with less developed markets. In contrast, line ties increase firm innovation, particularly when the firms are located in regions with more developed markets. However, it also shows that the effect of line ties is attenuated when regional governments place a greater emphasis on innovation. Our research contributes to the literature on the relationship between political ties and firm innovation, the heterogeneity of political ties, and the interplay between political ties and the institutional environment.

Abstract:Using the data of private companies listed in SME board in China,this paper tests empirically the relationship between political con-nection and fiscal subsidy and the impact of political connection on the performance of subsidy to innovaiton.It finds that political connection has a positive influence on fiscal subsidy,and has negative effects on the innovation performance of subsidy.Finally,it points out that developing po-litical connection is a way for private enterprises to seek rent,which may distort scarce resources allocation and reduce the efficiency of govern-ment resource use.

Abstract:Previous research has explored the impact of political ties on corporate innovation performance, yet with controversial results. This study proposes that political ties has a curvilinear impact on innovation performance, and the resulting curvilinear relationship is moderated by absorptive capacity and external environment. We conduct examination based on a survey among Chinese manufacturing firms, which demonstrates an inverted U-shape relationship between political ties and corporate innovation performance. This inverted U-shape relationship is moderated by the absorptive capacity, which means the positive effect of political ties on corporate innovation performance is strong when the absorptive capacity of a firm is high. Furthermore, political ties, absorptive capacity and external environment (i.e. dynamism, munificence, and complexity) have a three-way interactive effect on corporate innovation, which means firms with strong political ties exhibit the highest innovation performance when their absorptive capacity and external environmental condition (dynamism or munificence or complexity) stand at high level simultaneously. The research findings provide a comprehensive understanding for firms, especially for those with different characteristics and under different external environments, to exploit political ties to facilitate corporate innovation performance.

Abstract:The evidence about how political ties affect new product development in Chinese firms remains inconclusive. This article joins this debate by integrating innovation generation and appropriation into a unifying framework, and empirically examining the relationships among political ties, new product innovation advantage, and new product performance. Survey results from 272 Chinese firms show that in the innovation-generation stage, political ties affect new product innovation advantage through acquisitive and experimental learning benefits. Differently, in the innovation-appropriation stage, political ties function as a social appropriability regime that enhances the effect of new product innovation advantage on new product performance. Therefore, political ties play dual roles in Chinese firms' new product development. We also suggest notable cautions regarding their possible dark side effects. Implications and future research directions are provided in the end.
Anti-corruption and firm innovation: political path dependence perspective

Abstract:Drawing on the concept of political path dependence, we hypothesise a positive impact of anti-corruption measures on firm innovation, illustrating how businesses can benefit from both eliminating illegal political ties ('cleaning house') and cultivating lawful relationships with the government ('hosting new guests'). By analysing a sample of A-share listed companies from 2010 to 2015 using the PSM-DID model, we demonstrate that anti-corruption campaigns enhance innovation performance. Specifically, anti-corruption efforts sever the nexus of interests between government and businesses, curbing corporate expenditures on rent-seeking activities. Firms located in regions with stringent governmental oversight have experienced significant improvements in innovation outputs following the implementation of anti-corruption policies, particularly private-owned enterprises. This study provides empirical support for the benefits of anti-corruption from the perspective of political path dependence, offering valuable insights for governments aiming to bolster firm innovation through improved public governance and legal frameworks.

Exploring the influence of political knowledge on breakthrough innovation from a strategy selection perspective, this study examines the mechanisms of influence, determining that two factors of strategic choice have a partial mediating role. This study presents a novel approach to further explore radical innovation from the perspective of new political knowledge.

Abstract:Based on various data of the private listed companies in China, this paper stuides the impact of political connections on corporate innovation capabilities. Political connection can improve corporate value, bring financing convenience, tax benefits as well as government subsidy to affiliated enterprises. On the other hand, political connection helps affiliated enterprises enter the monopoly industries, which weakens their willingness to engage in innovative activities. The empirical studies reveal that political connection has a negative innovation effect, due to it raises the entry level of entering barrier industry in affiliated enterprises.

Abstract:In this paper we examine the effects of institutions on firms' management innovation. By proposing an externally embedded network perspective on firm performance, we demonstrate how the firms are influenced by the external institutional structure. In the framework of China's economic development, there are strong links between firm and local government, and these links will significantly influence the firms' management innovation ability. Thus, this paper focuses oil the firm-government network as a driving force to the firm management innovation ability and behavior. Furthermore, we study the network value of firms' internal and external networks in the effects of firm-government relationship using a simple game-theoretical model. In the end, some implications to the firms' management innovation strategies are proposed in the effect of firm-government relation.

Abstract:Existing studies on the impact of government on firm innovation have examined policies, state ownership, and political connections, but they have not examined firm strategies that intentionally pursue government resources. We draw from institutional theory to argue that strategically selecting the public sector as a target market hampers innovation and we draw from imprinting theory to argue that founders' embeddedness in the institutional environment amplifies this relationship. We tested our hypotheses on a dataset of 409 private firms in Chinese high-tech industries and found that targeting the public sector negatively affects innovation performance. This relationship is stronger for firms that are more confident in their target markets and that have a founding team endowed with more prior experience in domestic management and domestic elite education. The results contribute to our understanding of how strategically relying on government resources affects innovation, leading us to contend that such strategies are important considerations in strategy management.
Untangling the Duality of Emerging Market Firms' Response to Outward Foreign Direct Investment Policies on Their Innovation Performance: A Resource Dependence Perspective

Abstract:Firms' international expansion, affected by outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) policies of home countries, can greatly shape their innovation performance. Yet, existing literature lacks sufficient investigation toward the nexus between corporate response to policies in OFDI activities and subsequent innovation performance. Thus, this article examines how a firm's response to OFDI policies affects its innovation performance. Drawing on the resource dependence theory, the authors theorize corporate response to OFDI policies as firm dependence on home governments. They argue that such dependence differentially affects firm innovation through support and control mechanisms, and elucidate an inverted U-shaped relationship between corporate response to OFDI policies (measured by the percentage of a firm's OFDI projects in policy-favored markets) and innovation performance (measured as patent counts). Furthermore, this curvilinear relationship, they posit, is moderated and strengthened by home-government subsidies the firm receives (calculated as the ratio of annual subsidies received to yearly sales). The authors use archival data of 2,050 Chinese listed manufacturing firms responding to specific OFDI policies from 2013 to 2021 to corroborate their predictions. Overall, by illuminating the innovation implications of OFDI as a corporate response to policies, this study contributes to the international marketing literature in the context of emerging markets.

Abstract:We show that executives in the Chinese listed firms make politically motivated investments to build political ties. We also find that excessive investments are more pronounced in firms that can benefit more from political connections (e.g., private firms and poorly governed firms). Although such investments are largely inefficient, and adversely affect firm performance, we find that political connections allows firm owners/executives to extract private benefits including tunneling resources, fast growth in wealth, and promotion to higher positions. Our results are robust to competing hypotheses, alternative measure of abnormal investments, the propensity score matching method, analysis of alternative samples, and the instrumental variable approach. Our study suggests that understanding the means through which political connections are built helps reconcile the mixed economic effects of political connections.

Abstract:<p>Green technology innovation is an effective means to realize energy conservation and reduce carbon emissions, which plays a crucial role in promoting green and sustainable economic development. Although green technology innovation is increasing, the current understanding of how political connections affect firms' green technology innovation remains limited. This study analyzes the effect of political connections, and the loss of political relations, on firms' green technology innovations to extend the theoretical research. Using the data of Chinese A-listed firms from 2012 to 2017, the authors constructed a quasi-natural experiment to test the relationship between political connections and firms' technology innovations based on an anti-corruption campaign event to improve corporate governance by restricting government officials' involvement in firms' top management in 2013. The results indicate that political connections hinder the firms' green technology innovations and reduce their innovation output. We also find that the level of green technology innovations increased significantly when a company lost its political connections, as firms had to compensate for the lack of competitiveness resulting from the loss of political relationships by increasing investments in innovation. Various endogenous and robustness tests indicate that these results are consistent and robust. This study also compared the impact of political connections on firms' green technology innovations with different situations, including market conditions, categories of connections, and China's Environmental Protection Law. The findings indicate that political relationships have a more negative impact on firms' green technology innovations when the degree of marketization is low. These findings not only contribute to extending the literature on companies' political connections and green technology innovations but also provides a valuable reference for implementing market-oriented reforms in emerging market countries.</p>

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn light of inconclusive findings on the effect of political connections, this study explores conditions that affect the effectiveness of political connections on firm performance in democratic systems. First, using a resource dependence rationale, this study stresses the importance of variation in political connections and classifies direct and indirect political connections based on sources of power and the mechanisms for developing connections. Second, this study recognizes that influencing political outcomes is an entire political process in which political power matters. Furthermore, as power is central to the resource dependence rationale unlike exchange in transaction cost economics, this study explores how the effectiveness of political connections is contingent on the dynamics of de jure political power. We find that the effect of direct political connections is susceptible to changes in de jure political power due to its dyadic relationship with de jure power, while indirect political connections are more robust to such changes due to their connections with informal networks holding de facto political power. Further, the positive effects of political connections on firm performance are mediated by operational capability.

Abstract:This paper investigates the different effects of political connections on the firm performance of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and privately owned enterprises. Using data on Chinese listed firms from 1999 to 2007, we find that private firms with politically connected managers outperform those without such managers, whereas local SOEs with connected managers underperform those without such managers. Moreover, we find that private firms with politically connected managers enjoy tax benefits, whereas local SOEs with politically connected managers are prone to more severe over-investment problems. Our study reconciles the mixed findings of previous studies on the effect of political connections on firm performance.

Abstract:By integrating the political strategy literature and research on innovation, this article develops a theoretical framework and empirically tests how and why political turnover affects firm innovation. Drawing on the attention-based view, we argue that firms also use innovation as an attention-catching strategy to seek opportunities in uncertain environments. Furthermore, we highlight how the uncertainty rooted in political turnover varies by identifying two contingent values: 1) politicians' career concerns and 2) firms' political hierarchy. Using a longitudinal data set of industrial enterprises in the context of China, we find that there is a significant positive relationship between the replacement of government leaders at prefectural city level and firm innovation. Moreover, this positive relationship is strengthened when new government leaders are promoted locally, but is less salient if the politicians are at an early stage of their career or firms are affiliated with higher hierarchies. Our research expands the literature on uncertainty by highlighting the role of political agents, contributes to the theory of the attention-based view by treating attention from key external stakeholders as a key resource, and advances the understanding of how firms strategically respond to political shocks in China.
