Abstract:Sharing Economy Platforms (SEPs) are, in general, easily challenged by social ethics and culture, and are vulnerable to social and institutional uncertainties. Drawing from the Creating Shared Value (CSV) concept (Porter and Kramer, 2011), this article investigates whether CSV activities assist SEPs in retaining sustainable innovation at a business ecosystem level. Based on the Polanyian embeddedness framework, we specifically examine how SEPs' CSV co-evolves and aligns with virtue ethics and local culture across three growth stages: Community stage, Scaling-up stage, and Legitimation stage. Data for this research were collected from multiple case studies from two major sectors: the bike-sharing platform sector and the ride-sharing platform sector. Our findings indicate that SEPs should co-create shared values by embedding virtue ethics and local culture into their work with key ecosystem partners in order to preserve sustainable innovation. The research contributes to an evolving understanding of CSV activities in the sharing economy literature on SEPs, as well as proposing some practical implications for industrial practitioners and policymakers.

Abstract:The concept of creating shared value (CSV) (Porter & Kramer, 2006, 2011) opens a new chapter for corporate social responsibility (CSR) studies, yet the literature is riddled with ambiguity, and lacking empirical evidence. Drawing on signaling (Stiglitz, 2000; Spence, 2002; Connelly et al., 2011) and organizational commitment theories (Meyer & Allen, 1984, 1997), the study defines the CSV approach incorporating intangible and soft dimensions — commitment and compliance, from behavior and motivation perspectives. By applying secondary data methodology, the study operationalizes different CSR approaches by clustering various CSR behaviors of Chinese public companies and extends the study covering emerging economies. The results provide valuable empirical evidence that the CSV approach maximizes the impact of CSR on firm competitiveness, contributing to the theoretical development of the concept. It also contributes to the literature on firm competitiveness by offering an integrated framework consolidating resource-based view (RBV) (Barney, 1991), dynamics capability (Teece et al., 1997; Teece & Pisano, 2003; Teece, 2007, 2012; Mousavi et al., 2018, 2019), and CSV perspectives. By theoretically constructing the RBV perspective including financial and technological capacity while the dynamic capability perspective measured by management team education diversity, the paper also explored their corresponding impacts on firm competitiveness.

Abstract:China has made a great progress in economy and society since the beginning of the reform and opening up.In the market economy system,firms with profit maximization as their premier goal have become a powerful engine of the economy.However,the advancement of the society has not been in pace with the development of the economy.One of the main reasons is the negative externality of firms,such as pollution,when they are pursuing their own interests.Another reason is that information asymmetry between firms and society may lead to possible moral hazards,which can cause the supply of unsafe products and poor working conditions by the firms.These demonstrate that the conflict between firms and society is becoming more prominent.Besides,people's expectation for better human dignity and social justice is rising with their living standards.As a result,corporate social responsibility(CSR) becomes more serious and receives much more attention from both academics and practical business managers in China.The existing research and practice of Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) are mainly from a unilateral view: from outside of the firm to inside of the firm or the firm itself by governments and society.This view suggests that firms will solve CSR problems under the pressure of governments and society.It does not work in China,however.On the one hand,governments and firms are in the same boat.Governments are reluctant to force firms to take CSR at the expense of their own interests.The accomplishment of government tasks,such as revenues,employment,economic growth,depend on the development of the firms.On the other hand, nongovernmental organizations(NGOs),which stand for the interests of various societal groups or organizations,are too underdeveloped in China to give enough pressure.Therefore,a multilateral interaction view should be adopted in stead of the unilateral view.The former believes that irresponsibility of firms is not a problem of the firms themselves,but of the whole society.The solution of the CSR problem depends on the interaction and cooperation of firms,governments,and NGOs.In fact,the relationships between firms,governments,and NGOs are not in balance in China for the time being.Governments and NGOs are quite active while firms are comparatively passive.The view of multilateral interaction can rectify the imbalance and effectively implement CSR.To shift from the unilateral view to multilateral interaction view,theoretical researches should highlight the motives,behaviors,and mechanisms of firms assuming CSR and introduce stakeholder theory.In practice,the shift can be promoted by the following course of actions:(1) re-examining the situations of firms in China and respecting the interests of them,and striving to put forward a multi-win plan;(2) emphasizing supporting policies to attract firms to assume CSR rather than solely exerting pressures on them;(3) improving the managers' CSR attitude through business training and education;(4) developing NGOs and encourage them to cooperate with governments and firms.

Abstract:In recent years, mobile communications technologies and online sharing platforms have made collaborative consumption among consumers a major trend in the economy. Consumers buy many products but end up not fully utilizing them. A product owners self-use values can differ over time, and in a period of low self-use value, the owner may rent out her product in a product-sharing market. This paper develops an analytical framework to examine the strategic and economic impact of product sharing among consumers. Our analysis shows that transaction costs in the sharing market have a non-monotonic effect on the firm's profits, consumer surplus, and social welfare. We find that when the firm strategically chooses its retail price, consumers sharing of products with high marginal costs is win-win for the firm and the consumers whereas their sharing of products with low marginal costs can be lose-lose. Further, in the presence of the sharing market, the firm will find it optimal to strategically increase its quality, leading to higher profits but lower consumer surplus. In addition, within a distribution channel framework, the existence of the sharing market is more likely to increase the downstream retailers profit than the upstream manufacturers profit, i.e., product sharing can sometimes benefit the downstream retailer at the expense of the upstream manufacturer.

Abstract:In the past decade, the emergence of two new sharing business models, C2C sharing represented by Airbnb, Uber, Lyft and TaskRabbit and B2C sharing represented by Mobike, ofo and Spinlister, has led to the rise of various studies on this topic in the marketing discipline. However, the impact of the sharing economy on marketing thought and practice is still unclear. Based on scientific quantitative research and literature analysis, this paper firstly grasps the connotation of sharing economy from the definition, essence and characteristics. Secondly, the article also studies the impact of the traditional beliefs and practice of the sharing economy on marketing. According to the Theory of Collaborative Consumption, Theory of Two-sided market and Theory of Firms Operations analytical framework, From consumers (Engagement Motivation, Satisfaction and Purchase Intent), Sharing Platforms (Dynamic Pricing, Reputation Mechanism, Search Mechanism and Matching Mechanism) and Enterprises (Operations: Supply Chain/Channel, Management: Enterprise Pricing/Product Strategy) three major perspectives, sort out the progress of the sharing economy, emphasize the current problems of participating entities of the sharing economy, and provide the future research direction to promote sharing economic marketing. Finally, a set of forward-looking guiding principles is proposed for the sharing economy market participants-consumers, sharing platforms, and business operations management. In summary, this paper aims to help guide management and governance insights into the scientific practice of the sharing economy and help marketing scholars not only keep pace with the sharing economy, but also shape its future direction.

Abstract:Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) has traditionally treated consumption and production as separate domains of economic activities with different solutions for sustainability. In the emerging sharing economy, consumption activities are more and more integrated into the production process of shared goods and services, which provides novel arenas for sustainability in cities. Increasingly, these sharing business models are aiming to solve long-standing urban sustainability problems, such as insufficient daily transport, and its problems of polluttion. In this article, we integrate theories of the sharing economy, value co-creation and SCP to argue that the emergent forms of value co-creation between consumers and sharing businesses provide new opportunities for SCP. We use two emergent and representative sharing mobility businesses in China a bike-sharing scheme called Mobile and an electric-vehicle-sharing scheme called EVCARD as case studies to analyze the sustainability potentials of value co-creation. The social, behavioral, economic, and infrastructural obstacles encountered in realising such potentials are also identified. Based on these empirical results, we propose a framework to conceptualize the emerging patterns of value co-creation between governments, sharing business firms, and consumers in the sharing economy. Abstract:Porter and Kramer abandoned the traditional view of trade‐offs and proposed the concept of "creating shared value", which integrates social and environmental needs into a company's core business to improve both society and the environment while enhancing its competitiveness. Whether creating shared value strategy can achieve corporate sustainable development should be urgently investigated. With the resource‐dependence theory and resource‐based theory, the positive impacts of creating shared value strategy on corporate social, environmental, and financial performances are theoretically analyzed and empirically tested from the perspectives of resource provision and acquisition. In further analysis, the mechanism test based on "sharing value" suggests that creating shared value strategy can strengthen its competitiveness by fulfilling social and environmental responsibilities. The consequences test demonstrates that creating shared value strategy promotes the provision of technological resources and information resources, which is conducive to the acquisition of market resources, human resources, and capital resources.

Abstract:Customer sustainable consumption behaviors have attracted considerable attention recently. However, existing studies have been focused on individual sustainable consumption behaviors in a traditional economy context, such as energy saving, recycling, and green product consumption, and continuously ignoring its role in sharing economy. This study develops one conceptual model to explore how customer sustainable consumption behaviors are mobilised in the sharing economy context, drawing on the social exchange theory. Using a large data (Nvalid sample = 2967) crawled from a peer-to-peer (P2P) accommodation platform website (i.e. xiaozhu), we test the model to explore how customer sustainable consumption behaviors are boosted and expressed in the context of sharing economy. Specifically, drawing from the reciprocity tenet of social exchange theory, we show that social factor (i.e. social influence) exerts positive influence on customer sustainable consumption behaviors, whereas economic factor (i.e. price) exerts negative influence on customer sustainable consumption behaviors. Consequently, increased customer sustainable consumption behaviors result in improved objective sales performance. Furthermore, we also conclude that a service provider's strategies (i.e. reputation and response rate) could positively enhance the effect of social influence on customer sustainable consumption behaviors while the value of these strategies are limited and insignificant in the effect of price.

Abstract:Qualitative studies of sharing economy research are mostly descriptive case studies in the context of the United States and Europe. Although Asian economies are vibrant and expanding, rarely sharing economy research focuses on Asian contexts. Furthermore, quantitative analysis of sharing economies is rare. For this reason, our research aim is to examine the corporate sustainability of sharing economy companies through qualitative and quantitative analyses. It also shows how knowledge-sharing practices affect corporate sustainability in the context of emerging sharing economy firms in Japan. The contribution of this paper is threefold: (1) to provide a conceptual framework for sharing economy practices in general; (2) to present a specific research model in a Japanese context; (3) to report the qualitative case study findings and discuss the empirical results of testing of hypotheses with statistical validation. The research results suggest that the knowledge creation context has a positive effect on both explorative and exploitative knowledge-sharing practices. Explorative knowledge sharing has a positive effect on sustainability which in turn shows a negative effect on financial performance in the short run but a positive impact in the long run. Theoretical and managerial implications provide valuable insight into how sharing economy firms achieve sustainability goals. Future research issues are also summarized.

Abstract:While corporate social responsibility (CSR) is prevailing, the concept of creating shared value (CSV) by coordinating business activities and social concerns brings a great opportunity to transforming the business model for sustainable development. To better understand the systems comprising corporate shared value chains would be beneficial to economics, society, and sustainability. This study refers to the ecosystem as the theoretical lens in the exploration of the CSV components and contexts, and takes Macy’s as a focal case. In terms of academic contributions, this study generalizes the CSV components, including markets, social innovations, social performances, new business models, corporate entrepreneurship, and social network support. The research findings contribute to conceptualize and systemize the concept of CSV. In terms of practical contributions, the contexts for the operation of CSV, as summarized by this study, can serve as a template for corporate planning of CSV activities and sustainable development.

Abstract:This work provides a novel approach to the corporate social responsibility (CSR) concept and to CSR activities, using social capital as the driver of consumer citizenship behavior in the sharing economy business system. An online consumer questionnaire was carried out in Taiwan to examine seven proposed hypotheses to investigate the factors affecting behavior intention. The sample includes 445 participants and investigated their consumer citizenship behavior in response to companies’ participation in CSR activities and sharing of economic opportunities, in this case, Airbnb Inc. This study uses structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze the data. The result explores a new form of entrepreneurship marketing strategy and indicates that CSR has a positive effect on consumer–company (C–C) identification and the perceived value of sustainability. This study also establishes that social capital is the key mediator of the relationship between C–C identification and the perceived value of sustainability in consumer citizenship behavior. This research contributes to the idea that marketers should build well-designed CSR activities and deliver the perceived value of sustainability and consumer identification through social capital accumulation, which has proven to positively increase consumer citizenship behavior in the sharing economy environment. Consequently, the authors can suggest that entrepreneurs/executives should understand that CSR affects the perception of sustainability, consumer–company identification and improve consumer citizenship behavior. Most importantly, CSR activities focusing on sustainability issues and operating with social capital may lower costs and improve efficiencies as well. This finding could be viewed as a pioneering benchmark for further research.

Abstract:Examining the sharing economy as an economic framework is the focus of this article. The sharing economy as a newly emerged economic pattern has become intensively discussed in the 21st century. It differs from traditional economic patterns, in which buyers buy goods from sellers. It rather shares assets like cars and houses by providing paid service through online platforms. Two famous examples that are talked about frequently in this article are Airbnb and Uber. These two enterprises are the most successful and influential, thus becoming the representatives of the sharing economy in recent years. Additionally, this article explores the pros and cons of the sharing economy. Shortly speaking, it is more flexible, more beneficial to the producers, and more friendly to the customers. The downside of it is that it lacks government regulations which may be necessary to prevent serious event happen. Overall, the sharing economy has already occupied a huge portion of the market and still grows at a believable speed. It has a bright future and it is worth studying.

Abstract:Recent technological advances in online and mobile communications have enabled collaborative consumption or product sharing among consumers on a massive scale. Collaborative consumption has emerged as a major trend as the global economic recession and social concerns about consumption sustainability lead consumers and society as a whole to explore more efficient use of resources and products. We develop an analytical framework to examine the strategic and economic impact of product sharing among consumers. A consumer who purchased a firm's product can derive different usage values across different usage periods. In a period with low self-use value, the consumer may generate some income by renting out her purchased product through a third-party sharing platform as long as the rental fee net of transaction costs exceeds her own self-use value. Our analysis shows that transaction costs in the sharing market have a nonmonotonic effect on the firm's profits, consumer surplus, and social welfare. We find that when the firm strategically chooses its retail price, consumers' sharing of products with high marginal costs is a win-win situation for the firm and the consumers, whereas their sharing of products with low marginal costs can be a lose-lose situation. Abstract:Stakeholder collaboration is receiving increasing attention due to its promoting effect on the sharing economy. However, what forms do stakeholders take to collaborate in light of the sustainability factors affecting the sharing economy on the economic, environmental and social dimensions is not clear. Therefore, this paper proposes a methodology that integrates the value net model and two-mode social network analysis to study stakeholder collaboration by analysing the network structure of stakeholders and sustainability factors. The research finds that the core stakeholders in the sharing economy consist of individual suppliers, firm suppliers and sharing economy platforms. The social motivation, security mechanism, industry supervision, economic benefits and level of cooperation are the key factors of sustainable development, which provide more paths for stakeholders to take measures for collaborative development. Regarding the encouragement of sustainable development of the sharing economy, more stakeholders, such as suppliers and platforms related to sharing economy, have the ability to generate economic and social value rather than environmental value. However, economic, social and environmental value can to some extent be simultaneously improved by adjusting the strategy of stakeholder collaboration.

Abstract:Purpose The sharing economy has evolved as a result of the diffusion of information and communication technology and facilitates collaborative consumption and production otherwise known as value co-creation. The present research aims to explore the consumer responses to value co-creation in sharing economy such as satisfaction, brand preference and enduring buyer–platform relationships, amid consumer's CSR concerns. Design/methodology/approach Drawing on the sharing economy and value co-creation literature and rooted in the stimulus-organism-response framework, an online panel data provider was employed to recruit 393 actual sharing economy consumers from the United States. Empirical analyses are performed using structural equation modeling through Amos, version.27. Findings Findings confirm that value co-creation intentions contribute to consumers' satisfaction, brand preference and sustainable social relationships in the sharing economy. As expected, heightened concerns of corporate social responsibility (CSR) led to decreased consumer satisfaction with the sharing economy platform. Originality/value The study contributes to the digital sharing economy literature by emphasizing the role of CSR perceptions for building long-term relationships (buyer–platform relationships) where value co-creation is crucial.

Abstract:The sharing economy (SE) is growing rapidly around the globe, but SE firms often encounter challenges and even failures when entering some countries. The authors conduct a meta-analysis to investigate the effectiveness of key strategic drivers of SE participation (utilitarian value, social value, hedonic value, sustainability value, and trust) and examine their relative effectiveness across global contingencies (economic/competitive, cultural, societal, technological, regulatory, and demographic factors). Results indicate that hedonic value generates the most cross-national benefits, whereas social and sustainability values provide the least. The results reveal a complex pattern of global contingencies that firms should consider when developing their entry strategies, designing governance mechanisms, and evaluating the most promising markets. Finally, the authors offer three tenets that establish an emerging perspective of global SE participation: (1) High levels of economic and social inequality between SE participants lessen the importance of hedonic benefits, but enhance the importance of utilitarian and social benefits; (2) consumers are most motivated by the benefits associated with the lowest level of their unsatisfied needs on the Maslow's hierarchy of needs; and (3) consumers are more influenced by governance mechanisms that increase their trust in providers and platforms in markets with low levels of generalized trust.

Abstract:In this chapter, we explore how sharing economy platforms bridge institutional voids and engage in the divergent change to address poverty in the BoP communities. Based on an extensive review of the sharing economy literature, we identify two sharing economy models in China that differ in the degree of sharing economy activities. We label these platforms as the following: (a) the social-commerce-driven platform and (b) the access-driven platform. We then compare and contrast these platforms through two case studies: Pinduoduo’s group buying and selling model and NSB’s access to agriculture machinery model. Initial insights from the cases suggest that these platforms diverge from existing firms by utilising the online-offline social networks in the communities. Additionally, the social-commerce platform can help the rural farmers in building assets and capabilities needed for long-term growth and prosperity. However, this type of platforms can develop monopolistic tendencies and has a risk of mission drift. The access-based platform can facilitate access to necessary goods and services for BoP communities; however, they might be limited in building assets and capabilities of the rural communities without an explicit focus. We discuss the implications of these findings for the theory and practice.
