Abstract:Optimizing the structure and composition of the yolk-shell nanoreactors are one of the effective approaches to enhance their performance in heterogeneous catalysis, yet challenging. Here, we report a facile route to synthesize a highly efficient and recyclable yolk-shell CoN/2 nanoreactor with dual active sites by the direct nitridation of 2 precursor. The CoN yolks (∼50–70 nm) as active sites were encapsulated by the hydrophilic SiO2 shells (∼30 nm), and some small dots (∼5–10 nm) was sandwiched between void spaces. In-situ formation of N-doped carbon layer not only served as active sites but also improved electron transfer. The yolk-shell nanoreactors were applied for catalytic tetracycline (TC) degradation by activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and in the optimal case, it degraded >∼95% TC within 30 min in a wide pH value range of 2.02–9.94. The quenching experiments and EPR measurements further revealed that synergistic effect of the radicals and nonradical in PMS activation, O2−, OH, SO4− and 1O2 were involved in TC degradation. The improved catalytic performances could be ascribed to the following two aspects: (1) the hydrophilic SiO2 shell and the microenvironment formed by the yolk-shell structure not only enhance catalytic stability but also provide driving force to improve reaction rate (structural modulation); (2) CoN core and N doped carbon layer as dual active sites can achieve the synergistic effect of radicals and non-radicals in PMS activation (composition modulation). Moreover, possible degradation pathways of TC were proposed through the identification of intermediates using LC–MS/MS techniques. This research highlights the critical role of structure and component optimization in construction of advanced oxidation process systems and provides the possibility of utilizing MOF derivatives in the field of electrocatalysis, lithium battery and supercapacitor etc.

Abstract:The development of porous composite materials is of great significance for their potentially improved performance over those of individual components and extensive applications in separation, energy storage, and heterogeneous catalysis. Now mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with macroporous melamine foam (MF) have been integrated using a one-pot process, generating a series of MOF/MF composite materials with preserved crystallinity, hierarchical porosity, and increased stability over that of melamine foam. The MOF nanocrystals were threaded by the melamine foam networks, resembling a ball-and-stick model overall. The resulting MOF/MF composite materials were employed as an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the epoxidation of cholesteryl esters. Combining the advantages of interpenetrative mesoporous and macroporous structures, the MOF/melamine foam composite has higher dispersibility and more accessibility of catalytic sites, exhibiting excellent catalytic performance.

Abstract:The intrinsic heterogeneity of alumina (Al2O3) surface presents a challenge for the development of alumina-supported single-site heterogeneous catalysts and hinders the characterization of catalytic species at the molecular level as well as the elucidation of mechanistic details of the catalytic reactions. Here we report the use of aluminum hydroxide secondary building units (SBUs) in the MIL-53(Al) metal–organic framework (MOF) with the formula Al(μ2–OH)(BDC) (BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) as a uniform and structurally defined functional mimic of Al2O3 surface for supporting Earth-abundant metal (EAM) catalysts. Covalent organic frameworks@ZIF-67 derived novel nanocomposite catalyst effectively activated peroxymonosulfate to degrade organic pollutants

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks-Covalent organic frameworks (MOFs-COFs) nanocomposites could improve the catalytic performance. Herein, a novel nanocomposite catalyst (CC@Co3O4) derived from MOFs-COFs (COF@ZIF-67) was prepared on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for bisphenol A (BPA) and rhodamine B (RhB) degradation. Owing to the Co species, oxygen vacancy (OV), surface hydroxyl (-OH), graphite N and ketone groups (C=O), the CC@Co3O4 exhibited higher catalytic degradation performance and total organic carbon (TOC) for BPA (93.8% and 22.3%) and RhB (98.2% and 82.5%) with a small quantity of catalyst (0.10 g/L) and low concentration of PMS (0.20 g/L) even without pH adjustment. Sulfate radicals (•SO4−), hydroxyl radicals (•OH), single oxygen (1O2), superoxide radicals (•O2−) and electron transfer process were all involved in the degradation of BPA and RhB. Among them, the degradation of BPA and RhB mainly depended on •O2− and 1O2, respectively. Meanwhile, the degradation pathways of BPA and RhB were proposed, and the biotoxicity of the degradation products was evaluated by freshwater chlorella. The results illustrated that the degradation products were environmentally friendly to organisms. In addition, the role of COF in the nanocomposites was also studied. The addition of COF remarkably improved the catalytic performance of CC@Co3O4 due to the faster electron transfer, more graphite N and C=O. Overall, this work may open the door to the development of COF-based catalysts in the field of water pollutant remediation.

Abstract:In peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based Fenton-like reaction, there was an irreconcilable contradiction between improving the catalytic activity and lowering the metal leaching, since the more catalytic sites exposed, the better activity and the easier leaching. In this work, we have provided a feasible method to address this problem by preparing yolk@shell structure with coordinately unsaturated metal sites on Prussian blue analogue (CUMSs-PBA) nanocubes surface inside the polypyrrole (PPy) capsule. On CUMSs-PBA surface, a large amount of metal sites were exposed and functioned as Lewis acid. As Lewis base, PMS adsorption and activation were encouraged via Lewis acid-base reaction, leading to an enhanced activation efficiency. PMS and pollutants were confined inside the yolk@shell nanoreactor with a limited cavity space, leading to an ultra-high concentration and accelerated degradation rate. In this case, the PMS activation path was altered, and the contributions of OH and 1 O 2 were largely improved in comparison with SO 4 − . Generally, the metal leaching was worsened due to the lack of ligand protection on coordinately unsaturated metal sites. Fortunately, the PPy shell was compacted and the pore size on shell was narrowed during the heat-treatment, resulting in the suppression effect on outward diffusion of leached metal ions. Therefore, improving catalytic activity and lowering metal leaching were simultaneously realized in the CUMSs-PBA@PPy nanoreactor.

Growth of Graphene-Supported Hollow Cobalt Sulfide Nanocrystals Via MOF-templated Ligand Exchange As Surface-Bound Radical Sinks for Highly Efficient Bisphenol A Degradation

Abstract:Graphene nanosheet-supported hollow cobalt sulfide nanocrystals (Co3S4@GN, CoS@GN) were fabricated via a facile ligand exchange route using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as self -templates. Subsequent thermal annealing induced the phase transformation of Co3S4 to CoS. This synthesis strategy drove the cobalt ions inside zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-67) to migrate outwards, forming a highly reactive shell composed of abundant exposed active sites to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in the sulfate radical (SO4 center dot-)-based advanced oxidation process (SR-AOP). The graphene support exhibited excellent efficiencies in the enrichment of targeted pollutant as well as the charge transfer between absorbed molecules and radicals. The nanocatalysts were fully characterized and applied to the catalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA). Benefitting from the unique structure characteristic, the as-synthesized nanocomposites showed superior catalytic activities over a broad pH range. The degradation efficiency of BPA reached similar to 100% within 8 min by using CoS@GN, and the kinetic constant (0.62 min(-1)) was higher than those of most reported heterogeneous catalysts by 1-2 orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the critical roles of graphene support in regulating the variety and action site of radicals were addressed for the first time. The adsorptive and conductive graphene made the SO4 center dot- once produced was consumed immediately, which limited the diffusion of SO4 center dot- out of catalyst surface and the generation of center dot OH. The catalyst served as a surface-bound SO4 center dot- sink for the in-situ degradation of adsorbed BPA. Catalyst characterizations and the Density-Functional-Theory (DFT) calculation confirmed the excellent activity of CoS@GN in yielding SO4 center dot- with Co(II) as the active center. A CoS@GN-coated membrane reactor was constructed to avoid catalyst loss and worked well in consecutive 3 cycles, suggesting the satisfactory catalyst reusability and system robustness. Overall, this work paved a new way for MOFs in the environmental application and provided a novel family of Co -based nanocatalysts to produce surface-bound radicals for recalcitrant contaminant degradation by SR-AOP.

Abstract:In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) derived Co3O4/NiCo2O4 double-shelled nanocages (DSNCs) were fabricated and utilized as catalysts to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for bisphenol A (BPA) de-gradation. The results showed that Co3O4/NiCo2O4 DSNCs exhibited superior BPA degradation performance over Co3O4 NCs and NiCo2O4 NCs. PDS combined with the interfaces of both the Co3O4 inner shell and NiCo2O4 outer shell to form complex, inducing the nonradical oxidation of BPA by electron abstraction. The double shelled hollow structure helped to increase the instantaneous concentration of reactants in the void space of Co3O4/NiCo2O4 DSNCs, thus promoting the decomposition of BPA. The Co3O4/NiCo2O4 DSNCs had high selectivity for BPA degradation and were resistant to halogens and background organic matter in wastewater. Our work indicated that metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived nanomaterials with a hollow structure have a promising application prospect for persulfate-based advanced oxidation technology.
Hierarchical multi-active component yolk-shell nanoreactors as highly active peroxymonosulfate activator for ciprofloxacin degradation

Abstract:The reasonable design of the structure and composition of catalysts was essential to improve the catalytic performance of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Herein, we reported a simple strategy to synthesize hierarchical Co3O4-C@CoSiOx yolk-shell nanoreactors with multiple active components by using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The novel nanoreactors are further used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation. The effects of reaction parameters (pH value, co-existing ions, reaction temperature, etc.) on CIP degradation were systematically investigated. Especially, ∼98.2% of CIP was degraded within 17 min under the optimal conditions, together with the low cobalt leaching and excellent reusability. The appreciable catalytic performance improvement might be due to the synergistic effect of the structure and component design: (1) the hierarchical yolk-shell structure endowed the catalyst with high surface area (∼232.47 m2/g) and fully exposed active sites; (2) abundant highly active ≡Co-OH+ were formed on the surface of CoSiOx; (3) the presence of oxygen vacancies and nitrogen-doped carbon promoted the decomposition of PMS through a non-radical process. The results revealed both the radical (SO4∙-, ∙OH and O2∙-) and non-radical (1O2 and direct charge transfer) should be responsible for the CIP degradation. Moreover, the possible degradation pathways of CIP were proposed through the identification of intermediates using LC-MS/MS techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Our work highlights that multi-component catalysts derived from MOFs with novel structure have broad application prospects in AOPs.

Abstract:Yolk–shell composites offer a promising platform for integrating cores into hollow shells to create unique structures and properties. However, the concomitant functionality and tunability of yolk–shell nanocomposites is still a great challenge but highly desirable. Herein, we demonstrate a rational design for the fabrication of yolk–shell-structured covalent organic framework (COF)@metal–organic framework (MOF) () nanocomposites with COF as the external shell and MOF as the inner yolk. Series of the composites with different MOF cores and COF shells were readily synthesized via a template-free solvothermal method. Control experiments showed that the formation of the hollow cavity between the core and the shell originated from the amorphous-to-crystalline transformation and the simultaneous shrinkage of the shell under the pyrrolidine-catalyzed conditions. The resultant merges the inherent structure tunability and functionality of both COFs and MOFs. The functions of can be regulated and optimized by judicious selections of metal ions and organic building blocks. Abstract:As one of the newly emerging heterogenous catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, complex hollow structured nanoreactors with multilevel interiors can significantly enhance the catalytic performance and manifest great potentiality in organic pollutant degradation. Herein, a novel yolk–shell structured CoTiO3@Co3O4 nanoreactor was synthesized via a simple self-template method using amorphous TiO2 nanospheres as template and CoCl2·6H2O as cobalt source, respectively. Owing to the remarkable structural advantages and unique space confined effect, the as-synthesized CoTiO3@Co3O4 nanoreactor exhibited a high efficiency for PMS activation, enabling 100% removal of rhodamine B (RhB; 50 mg L−1) in a short period of time, with a rate constant (0.1993 min−1) much higher relative to those of CoTiO3 (0.0246 min−1) and Co3O4 (0.0150 min−1). Moreover, this catalyst showed a low cobalt leaching (0.080 mg L−1) while keeping almost unchanged catalytic activity in the cyclic degradation processes. Based on ESR analysis and quenching experiments, the possible catalytic mechanism was proposed. The mineralization degree was found to be 79.5% in the RhB degradation process via TOC analysis. LC/MS was employed to identify the intermediates and corresponding degradation pathway was elucidated. Besides, CoTiO3@Co3O4 nanoreactor was revealed to be also highly efficient in activating PMS for degradation of several other recalcitrant organic pollutants. This work may be suggestive to the design and synthesis of advanced complex hollow nanoreactors for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation based on persulfate (PS) activation presents one of the most promising methods to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) to deal with the increasing environmental contamination. However, the half-life periods of most ROS generated from PS activation are quite short. To this end, using bimetallic amino-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as both a precursor and a template yields functional N-doped carbonaceous hybrid nanorods (FeCo-NC) are synthesized, characterized, and studied. The results demonstrate FeCo-NC600 can effectively dissociate persulfate into ROS to degrade bisphenol A (BPA) in absence of heat and light owing to the well-defined structure and metal coordination provided by pristine MOFs and N-doped carbon network. In the FeCo-NC600/PS system, BPA achieved a complete removal in 20 min with a pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.2876 min−1, and about 85% of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) removal was observed. In addition, the catalyst can be reused without significant loss in activity. Further studies reveal the contribution of surface bound sulfate radical, surface bound hydroxyl radicals, and singlet oxygen in BPA degradation. Meanwhile, a surface reaction mechanism is proposed, it can achieve the simultaneous generation of ROS on the catalytic site and efficient degradation of BPA on the adsorption site, thereby reducing the migration distance of ROS and excellently overcome the problem of short half-life of ROS, further improving the catalytic activity.

Abstract:Nowadays, non-typical yolk/shell structure has drawn much attentions due to the better catalytic performance than traditional counterparts (one yolk/one shell). In this study, ZIF-67 @Co 2 SiO 4 /SiO 2 yolk/shell structure was prepared in one-step at room temperature, in which ZIF-67 was served as the hard-template, H 2 O was served as etchant and tetraethyl orthosilicat was served as the raw material for Co 2 SiO 4 /SiO 2 . After calcination, the non-typical Co x O y @Co 2 SiO 4 /SiO 2 yolk/shell nanoreactor with Co 2 SiO 4 /SiO 2 dual-shells and Co x O y multiple-cores was obtained. On the one hand, more active sites were exposed on multiple-cores surface and better protection were provided by dual-shells. On the other hand, the sheet-like Co 2 SiO 4 inner shell not only extended the travel path and retention time of pollutants trapped in cavity, but also separated the multiple-cores from aggregation. Therefore, the nanoreactor displayed the outstanding catalytic activity and recyclability in Fenton-like reaction. Metronidazole (20 mg/L) was completely degraded after 30 min, rhodamine B (50 mg/L) and methyl orange (20 mg/L) were removed even within 5.0 min. Catalytic mechanism indicated that 1 O 2 greatly contributed to the pollutant degradation. This paper presented a simple, versatile, green and energy-saving method for non-typical yolk/shell nanoreactor, and it could inspire to prepare other catalysts with high activity and stability for environmental remediation.

Abstract:A new porous Co-MOF, {Co 2 (μ 3 -OH)(L)(H 2 O) 2 } n ( 1, H 3 L = 5- ((4'- (tetrazol- 5''- yl) benzyl) oxy) isophthalic acid) was designed and synthesized under solvothermal conditions and displayed a classic 5-node uninodal boron nitride (bnn) topology as well as good catalytic activity for cyanosilylation and Strecker reactions at room temperature. Then using 1 as the filler and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) as the matrix, composite nanofiber membrane 1 @PVDF-n and mixed matrix membrane 1 @PVDF-m were successfully prepared via the electrospinning technique and casting method, respectively. These two composite membrane catalysts could be easily separated from the reaction system and reused many times without loss of activity. Moreover, compared with 1 @PVDF-m, 1 @PVDF-n showed better catalytic activity owing to its high concentration of MOF doping and hierarchical pore structure which facilitated the contact between the substrates and the catalytic active centers in a certain region. It provides a new strategy for developing new MOF-based heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of toxic organic pollutants in water urgently requires improved efficiency for practical application. Here a wrapping-pyrolysis strategy is exploited to convert CoP nanowires-threaded ZIF-8 into CoP nanoparticles-confined nitrogen-doped yolk-shell porous carbon polyhedra, featuring high-density active sites, and high adsorbability, dispersibility and conductivity (4-High). The nanoreactor efficiently activates peroxymonosulfate for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation over a wide pH range and in saline solutions. The apparent kinetic rate constant (18.96 min(-1)) is the highest reported to date and exceeds those of reported catalysts by 1-2 orders of magnitude. Experimental and theoretical evidence reveals that the catalysis occurs at the Co4P4@graphitic nitrogen-doped graphene site to produce surface-bound SO(4)(center dot-)and induce direct electron abstraction for BPA degradation. The high catalytic activity is attributed to the unique yolk-shell structure which concentrates catalytic and adsorptive sites within a confined space, as well as to the porous carbon polyhedron with high dispersibility and conductivity for fast mass and electron transport. Moreover, a fluidized-bed catalytic unit is constructed and enables continuous zero discharge of BPA and easy nanocatalyst recycling. This work will guide "4-High" catalyst design to improve future deep water purification technology.
Encapsulation of C-N-decorated Metal Sub-Nanoclusters/single Atoms into a Metal-Organic Framework for Highly Efficient Catalysis.

Abstract:Fabrication and modification of few-atom metal clusters and even single atoms in the pores of porous materials for catalysis are highly desired from an atom-efficiency aspect but remain a great challenge. Herein, we propose a facile and efficient strategy for the encapsulation of C-N-decorated Pd sub-nanoclusters (MSNCs)/single atoms (SAs) into MOFs by the confined thermolysis of Pd-based metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) in MOF pores. The obtained hybrids contained both Pd MSNCs (∼0.8 nm) and Pd SAs, which were stabilized by the in situ formed C-N fragments and the confinement effect of MOF pores. Benefiting from the highly exposed Pd atoms and synergistic effect between Pd and C-N fragments, these catalysts exhibited extremely high catalytic activity and stability in various important chemical processes, making them comparable to the most active Pd-based catalysts reported in the literature even under milder reaction conditions. Considering the high tunability of MOPs, this proposed strategy might provide a new toolbox for enriching the family of decorated MSNC/SA catalysts.

Abstract:Rational design of non-noble metal catalysts with an electrocatalytic activity comparable or even superior to Pt is extremely important for future fuel cell-based renewable energy devices. Herein, we demonstrate a new concept that a metal-organic framework (MOF) can be used as a novel precursor to in situ encapsulate Co@Co3O4@C core@bishell nanoparticles (NPs) into a highly ordered porous carbon matrix (CM) (denoted as Co@Co3O4@C-CM). The central cobalt ions from the MOF are used as a metal source to produce Co metal cores, which are later transformed into a fancy Co@Co3O4 nanostructure via a controlled oxidation. The most notable feature of our Co@Co3O4@C-CM is that the highly ordered CM can provide much better transport pathways than the disordered pure MOF derived nanostructure that can facilitate the mass transport of O-2 and an electrolyte. As a result, the well-designed Co@Co3O4@C-CM derived from the MOF shows almost identical activity but superior stability and methanol tolerance for the ORR relative to the commercial Pt/C in alkaline medium. Our work reports a novel Co@Co3O4@C nanostructure from a MOF for the first time and also reveals the important role of the introduction of a highly ordered carbon matrix into the MOF derived catalyst in enhancing the ORR activity and stability. To the best of our knowledge, the Co@Co3O4@C-CM is the most efficient non-noble metal nanocatalyst ever reported for the ORR.

Abstract:Confined catalysis is an effective strategy to deal with the low utilization of active sites and poor cyclic stability in metal catalysts. However, the impact of confinement effect on the catalytic degradation process of organic pollutants is unclear. A hollow sulfur doped multilayer carbon shell wrapped cobalt iron alloy catalyst (CoFe@CS) is designed here to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. The hollow porous multilayer carbon shell provides a confined space for the rapid interface adsorption of PMS and in-situ degradation of BPA, which contribute to the superior BPA removal rate of nearly 100% within 20 min. Moreover, confinement catalysis favors the anti-interference ability to cope with changes in solution conditions like pH, organic matter, inorganic anions, etc., which favors the application in realistic wastewater. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results demonstrate that the crucial Co 2+ sites are regenerated by sulfur reduction, ensuring the sustainable use. Electrochemical analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that S doping improves the electron transfer capability and chemical reactivity of CoFe@CS, which drives direct oxidation as the dominant pathway for BPA degradation. The CoFe@CS/PMS system could efficiently mineralize BPA (up to 87.74%) and reduce residual toxicity. This work not only provides a reference for the design of efficient and stable transition metal catalysts but also offers a new insight into the confined degradation research of BPA in advanced oxidation technologies.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs), which have great potential in the field of water environmental remediation. Development of highly efficient SACs with sufficient stability and excellent catalytic performance was highly desirable, yet remains a huge challenge. Herein, a CoSA/NHCS catalyst was prepared by confining Co single-atom into the N-doped Hollow Carbon Sphere (NHCS) to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for removing bisphenol A (BPA). Experimental and density functional theory (DFT) studies show that the combination of Co-N4 active site and electron transfer mechanism could achieve rapid degradation of BPA (98 % within 1 min). The main active sites of BPA attacked by the electron transfer pathway were predicted by calculating BPA molecular orbitals and Fukui indices. The possible degradation intermediates of BPA were identified by LC-MS and demonstrated to be nontoxic using ecological structure activity relationship modeling (ECOSAR). In a flow-through device for BPA degradation reaction, no deactivation of the catalyst was seen after 60 h and still remained 90 % remove efficiency after 100 h, which further renders it promising for actual water environmental remediation.

Abstract:Single atom catalysts (SACs) are receiving increasing interests due to their high theoretical catalytic efficiency and intriguing physiochemical properties. However, most of the synthetic methodologies involve high‐temperature treatment. This usually leads to limited control over the spatial distribution of metal sites and collapse of porous network that result in limited active site exposure. A strategy to construct SAC by using a covalent organic framework as the precursor is reported in this study. The as‐prepared catalyst is mainly composed of standing carbon layers with the presence of edge‐site hosted metal single atoms. Such structure configuration not only allows full site exposure but also endows the metal site with high intrinsic activity. With a trace amount of cobalt loading (0.17 wt%), the nanorice‐shaped catalyst displays promising electrochemical activities toward catalyzing the oxygen reduction reaction in both alkaline and acidic medium. An ultrahigh mass activity of 838 A gCo–1 at 0.9 V is achieved in the acidic electrolyte. This work suggests a new route to design SACs based on covalent organic framework for energy storage and conversion devices.

Abstract:There has been growing interest in the combination of porous metal organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived ar-chitectures with conductive carbonaceous materials for the synergistically enhanced catalytic activity. Herein, we described a facile strategy to synthesize a highly efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst through pyrolysis of MOFs as sacrificial templates. We found that creating defective sites in CNTs precursors exhibited significant impact on the charge transfer capability of composite microcages and the coordination environment of Fe centers. With the assistant of persulfate oxidants, ZnFe2O4/CNTs-Ar with modulated defects exhibited 17.5-fold higher kinetic reaction rate (0.35 min(-1)) than blank ZnFe(2)O(4)microcages for Bisphenol A degradation. Experimental characterizations suggested that defective CNTs played a vital role in shuttling electron from BPA molecules to persulfate, triggered the direct decomposition of pollutants via a non-radical oxidation pathway. Our research provides a new strategy to develop high-performance MOFs-derived catalysts through defect modulation for wastewater treatment.
