Abstract:Synthesis of a robust and bifunctional catalyst with earth-abundant element efficient for electrocatalytic reduction and oxidation is crucial in electrocatalytic energy conversion and storage. Herein we show that a facile method to synthesize CuFe2O4 crystals with octahedral shape as a bifunctional catalyst efficient for water oxidation and H2O2 reduction. These as-obtained CuFe2O4 catalysts exhibited high-performance for water oxidation (2.2 times current density higher than that of commercial RuO2), lower Tafel slope (similar to 50 mV dec(-1)), larger anodic current density and much enhanced electrochemical durability. Besides, the resulted CuFe2O4 catalyst was also efficient for electrocatalytic H2O2 reduction, it shows 5-fold increment of current density in the presence of 5 mM H2O2, high sensitivity and much improved stability. The cost-effective synthesis route holds great promise for the controllable synthesis of nanostructured spinel, and is expected to show promising applications in the generation of renewable energy. Self-assembly of a Highly Stable and Active Co3O4/H-TiO2 Bulk Heterojunction with High-Energy Interfacial Structures for Low Temperature CO Catalytic Oxidation

Abstract:Development of transition metal oxide catalysts with a tunable structure is extremely important for energy, chemical and environmental processes. Herein, we report a new strategy for the synthesis of a highly stable and active Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction with high-energy interfacial structures through two-step hydrothermal-crystallization for efficient low-temperature CO catalytic oxidation. By selectively etching, an anatase TiO2 support exposing the high-index (112) facet was first created. The high-index (112) facet with high surface energy can endow the bulk TiO2 support with unique physical and chemical properties so as to act as a foundation to construct a robust high-energy interfacial bulk heterojunction. Because of the presence of Ti–O–Co species at the high-energy interface, the prepared Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction possessed much more catalytic active sites compared to Co3O4 nanoparticles supported on conventional TiO2 supports and exhibited a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 3.56 × 10−3 s−1 at 120 °C, which was very competitive compared to those of reported cobalt-based catalysts and 1000 times higher than that of commercial Co3O4. Importantly, due to the strong interactions between Co3O4 and the TiO2 bulk support exposed high-index facet, more attractive water-resisting properties for low temperature CO oxidation can be achieved in the presence of steam (∼2%) compared to previously reported catalysts. The results show promising opportunities for tailoring catalytic behaviors beyond a facile and rational design with a controllable metal–support interface.

Abstract:A time- and energy-saving solution-based chemical precipitation method was developed to synthesize leaf-like CuO nanostructures. The morphology and size of the leaf-like CuO nanostructures could be simply manipulated by controlling the type and concentration of precursors, and the oriented attachment mechanism is responsible for the formation of leaf-like shape. With the concurrent reduction reaction and at appropriate concentration, CuO/Ag microspheres could be prepared and the growth mechanism is proposed. These two structures could serve as effective photocatalyst for the degradation of rhodamine B under visible light irradiation in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, compared to pure CuO nanostructures, the photodecomposition activity of CuO/Ag microspheres increases by 42.9% due to plasmon- enhanced light absorption.
Synthesis of Highly Porous Cu2O Catalysts for Efficient Ozone Decomposition

Abstract:At present, it is urgent to synthesize highly active ozone decomposition catalysts to cope with the ever-increasing ozone concentration in the atmosphere. In this study, a highly porous Cu2O catalyst was prepared by using combined surfactants of triblock copolymer P123 and n-butanol through a simple solution reduction method by ascorbic acid. Transmittance electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and N2 adsorption–desorption characterizations verify the highly porous structure with a relatively high surface area of 79.5 m2·g−1 and a small crystallite size of 2.7 nm. The highly porous Cu2O shows 90% ozone conversion activity in harsh conditions, such as a high space velocity of 980,000 cm3·g−1·h−1, or a high relative humidity of 90% etc., which is not only attributable to the high surface area but also to the high concentration of surface oxygen vacancy. The results show the promising prospect of the easily synthesized, highly porous Cu2O for effective ozone decomposition applications.

Abstract:One-and three-dimensional (1D, 3D) Cu2PO4OH hierarchical architectures have been successfully prepared by a facile hydrothermal method, mainly through adjusting the precursor concentrations. A possible splitting mechanism is proposed to understand the evolution from 1D to 3D hierarchical architectures. Besides, through experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we find that copper hydroxyphosphate (Cu2PO4OH) shows an excellent catalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). This has been mainly ascribed to the contribution of hydroxyl groups contained in Cu2PO4OH, which favours to form more hydroxyl radicals. Moreover, both partial density of states (PDOS) and total density of states (TDOS) have confirmed that the conduction band (CB) is affected by part of the O 2p orbitals of the hydroxyls; thus the hydroxyl group is responsible for the increased band gap and the positive VB of Cu2PO4OH. This study suggests that new photocatalysts or photoelectric materials can be developed through introducing hydroxyl groups.

Abstract:Novel, hierarchical, flower-like Ag/Cu2O and Au/Cu2O nanostructures were successfully fabricated and applied as efficient electrocatalysts for the electrochemical reduction of CO2. Cu2O nanospheres with a uniform size of ∼180 nm were initially synthesized. Thereafter, Cu2O was used as a sacrificial template to prepare a series of Ag/Cu2O composites through galvanic replacement. By varying the Ag/Cu atomic ratio, Ag0.125/Cu2O, having a hierarchical, flower-like nanostructure with intersecting Ag nanoflakes encompassing an inner Cu2O sphere, was prepared. The as-prepared Agx/Cu2O samples presented higher Faradaic efficiencies (FE) for CO and relatively suppressed H2 evolution than the parent Cu2O nanospheres due to the combination of Ag with Cu2O in the former. Notably, the highest CO evolution rate was achieved with Ag0.125/Cu2O due to the larger electroactive surface area furnished by the hierarchical structure. The same hierarchical flower-like structure was also obtained for the Au0.6/Cu2O composite, where the FECO (10%) was even higher than that of Ag0.125/Cu2O. Importantly, the results reveal that Ag0.125/Cu2O and Au0.6/Cu2O both exhibit remarkably improved stability relative to Cu2O. This study presents a facile method of developing hierarchical metal-oxide composites as efficient and stable electrocatalysts for the electrochemical reduction of CO2.

Abstract:A controllable synthesis of various morphologies of CuO nanostructures with tuning by hetero-metal cations has been developed in aqueous solution at room temperature. The morphologies of CuO can be engineered from nanosheets to nanoparticles with different length ratios of the long axis to the short axis. The formation of many metal-ion complexes plays an important role in slowing the release rate of OH- and affects the reaction kinetics further. We found that the effect of hetero-metal cations on the final morphology of the CuO nanostructures was the same as that of the cooling temperature. A series of temperature-controlled experiments demonstrated this. Furthermore, among all the synthesized CuO nanostructures, the fascinating colloidal mesoporous CuO quasi-monocrystalline nanosheets prepared at 25 degrees C with a thickness of ca. 10 nm and large specific surface area of 80.32 m(2) g(-1) is investigated intensively. These CuO nanosheets demonstrate a superior catalytic activity for CO oxidation, with features of high CO conversion efficiency (47.77 mmol(CO) g(CuO)(-1) h(-1) at 200 degrees C), which is close to that reported for previously investigated supported-CuO catalysts, and a low apparent activation energy E-a (53.3 kJ mol(-1)).

Abstract:A simple co-precipitation method was utilized to synthesize Cu/Mn catalysts with different physicochemical properties for high humidity ozone decomposition. The catalysts were then tested for activity and stability in decomposing ozone, and their physical and chemical properties were analyzed through various characterization techniques. Furthermore, the characterization after stability testing provided insights into the internal mechanism of the ozone reaction process. The Cu/Mn-NN catalyst demonstrated excellent ozone decomposition activity in the temperature of 25–100 °C, maintaining the conversion above 91% for continuous ozone decomposition for 12 h at room temperature, the relative humidity (RH) of 85%, and the weight space velocity of 300 L g−1 h−1. Characterization revealed that the Cu/Mn-NN catalyst, exhibited the larger specific surface area, better reducibility and oxygen storage capacity, richer surface functional groups and oxygen vacancies. Additionally, characterization after the stability test confirmed the accumulation of oxygen intermediate species on the catalyst surface. The findings also suggested that the catalytic environment created by nitrate precursors played a vital role in preventing catalyst particle aggregation, facilitating electron transfer within the catalyst, ensuring uninterrupted migration of lattice oxygen, and timely regeneration of oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:Nanoporous Cu-O system catalysts with different oxidation states of Cu have been fabricated through a combination of dealloying as-milled Al66.7Cu33.3 alloy powders and subsequent thermal annealing. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) have been used to characterize the microstructure and surface chemical states of Cu-O catalysts. The peculiar nanoporous structure can be retained in Cu-O catalysts after thermal treatment. Catalytic experiments reveal that all the Cu-O samples exhibit complete CO conversion below 170 degrees C. The optimal catalytic performance could be achieved through the combination of annealing in air with hydrogen treatment for the Cu-O catalyst, which shows a near complete conversion temperature (T-90%) of 132 degrees C and an activation energy of 91.3 KJ mol(-1). In addition, the present strategy (ball milling, dealloying and subsequent thermal treatment) could be scaled up to fabricate high-performance Cu-O catalysts towards CO oxidation.
Sintering- and oxidation-resistant ultrasmall Cu(I)/(II) oxides supported on defect-rich mesoporous alumina microspheres boosting catalytic ozonation

Abstract:Supported copper oxides with well-dispersed metal species, small size, tunable valence and high stability are highly desirable in catalysis. Herein, novel copper oxide (CuOx) catalysts supported on defect-rich mesoporous alumina microspheres are developed using a spray-drying-assisted evaporation induced self-assembly method. The catalysts possess a special structure composed of a mesoporous outer layer, a mesoporous-nanosphere-stacked under layer and a hollow cavity. Because of this special structure and the defective nature of the alumina support, the CuOx catalysts are ultrasmall in size (1 ~ 3 nm), bivalent with a very high Cu+/Cu2+ ratio (0.7), and highly stable against sintering and oxidation at high temperatures (up to 800 °C), while the wet impregnation method results in CuOx catalysts with much larger sizes (~15 nm) and lower the Cu+/Cu2+ ratios (~0.29). The catalyst formation mechanism through the spray drying method is proposed and discussed. The catalysts show remarkable performance in catalytic ozonation of phenol wastewaters. With high-concentration phenol (250 ppm) as the model organic pollutant, the optimized catalyst delivers promising catalytic performance with 100% phenol removal and 53% TOC removal in 60 min, and a high cyclic stability. Superoxide anion free radicals (⋅O2-), singlet oxygen (1O2) and hydroxyl radicals (⋅OH) are the predominant reactive species. A detailed structure-performance study reveals the surface hydroxyl groups and Cu+/Cu2+ redox couples play cooperatively to accelerate O3 decomposition generating reactive radicals. The plausible catalytic O3 decomposition mechanism is proposed and discussed with supportive evidences.

Abstract:We show a facile method to prepare surface-clean monodispersed small and stable CuOx nanoparticles with controllable average sizes from below 1 nm up to similar to 5 nm without using bulk capping agent. Structural and surface characterizations show that the chemical states of CuOx nanoparticles and their interactions with O-2 are dependent on the particle size. To show their relevance to catalysis, the well-defined monodispersed CuOx nanoparticles have been used for oxidative coupling of alkynes. While the generally used CuCl catalysts presents a reaction induction period and agglomerate into CuOx nanoparticles during the reaction, the induction period disappears when monodispersed CuOx nanoparticles (similar to 2 nm) were used as catalyst. Supported CuOx nanoparticles on TiO2 behave in the same way as monodispersed CuOx nanoparticles. Kinetic, spectroscopic, and isotopic studies show that O-2 activation is the rate-controlling step and that the nature of the oxygen species formed on supported CuOx nanoparticles is dependent on the size of CuOx and determine the catalytic properties for oxidative coupling of alkynes.
Fabricating Cu2O-CuO Submicron-Cubes for Efficient Catalytic CO Oxidation: the Significant Effect of Heterojunction Interface

Abstract:In this work, the uniform Cu2O submicron-cubes were facilely synthesized by liquid phase reduction method. Then, the Cu2O submicron-cubes were further oxidized into Cu2O-CuO heterojunction with tunable Cu2+/Cu+ ratios and CuO submicron-cubes by controlling the calcination temperature. The phase transition period during calcination was real-time monitored by the in-situ XRD and in-situ DRIFTS. The obtained materials were investigated as the catalysts of CO oxidation. The results revealed that the Cu2O-CuO heterojunction catalysts performed much higher catalytic activities than the Cu2O and CuO counterparts. Because the synergistic effect of the heterojunction (Cu2+/Cu+) could increase the surface oxygen vacancy concentration. Furthermore, it was also found that only the Cu2O-CuO heterojunction structure with the appropriate Cu2+/Cu+ ratio behaved the optimum catalytic activity. The kinetic studies indicated that the apparent activation energy of CO oxidation was greatly affected by the Cu2+/Cu+ ratio. Therefore, these Cu2O-CuO submicron-cubes with heterostructure were considered as the promising CO oxidation catalysts.
On the CuO-Mn2O3 oxide-pair in CuMnOx multi-oxide complexes: Structural and catalytic studies

Abstract:The current work provide a new understanding on the active site of CuMnOx catalysts and thus offer a new perspective in the development of highly effective and low cost CuMnOx catalysts for heterogeneous catalytic oxidation reactions. A series of dual-component copper-manganese multi-oxide catalysts (CuMnOx) have been successfully synthesized using a surfactant assisted hydrolysis-hydrothermal method and studied by XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption test, ICP-AES, SEM, Aberration-corrected HADDF-STEM, HRTEM, FT-IR, Raman, XPS, H2-TPR. These CuMnOx catalysts were found to be composed with uniform CuO-Mn2O3 oxide pair structure, in which highly isolated/dispersed CuO species are anchored in the framework of Mn2O3. It was found that the speciation in these CuMnOx catalysts presents a shift from highly isolated or even single Cu2+ oxide species (Cu2+Ox) to CuO nanoclusters and CuO microcrystalline with increasing Cu content. In CO oxidation reaction, which was employed to probe the structure of the CuO-Mn2O3 oxide pairs in these CuMnOx catalysts, the Cu-O-Mn sites in those CuMnOx catalysts with highly isolated or highly dispersed CuO species were found to be highly active. For CuO-Mn2O3 oxide pair catalysts, the highly isolated/dispersed CuO species in Mn2O3 framework is essential to achieve high activity.

Abstract:Nowadays, Cu-based materials have attracted extensive attention as electrocatalysts, while the inherent reason of the filling of high anti-bonding state of Cu d band (3d104s1) makes it difficult to hybridize with O 2p band of oxygen intermediates during the adsorption process of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). To increase the efficiency of Cu-based electrocatalysts, efforts have been made to optimize the electronic structures and to create surface defects and hierarchical nanostructures with more exposed accessible active sites. Herein, we report a facile method for preparing CuO electrocatalysts with hierarchical nanostructures using the Cu-alanine complex as a precursor through room-temperature chemical precipitation and subsequent calcination in air. Investigations of products obtained at different calcination temperatures reveal the relationship between OER activities and the material characteristics such as specific surface areas, crystal growth orientations, and element components. The product obtained at 500 °C exhibits the smallest overpotential of 290 mV in 1.0 mol/L KOH for electrocatalyzing OER. Combining with various characterizations of CuO electrocatalysts after OER activities, the possible catalytic mechanism and the influence factors of their OER performance are also discussed.

Abstract:In this innovative work, a series of CuO/TiO2/Ti monolithic catalysts were successfully synthesized using a scalable multistep method involving plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) and hydrothermal processes. The results revealed that the growth of CuO nanostructures can be controlled by varying the hydrothermal time. Specifically, the CuO/TiO2/Ti monolithic catalyst, obtained through a 1 h hydrothermal reaction (HR1), resulted in fine particle size, good dispersion, large specific surface area, especially sufficient Cu+ active sites, high oxygen vacancy concentration, and excellent redox ability. These attributes collectively ensured the efficient catalytic CO oxidation activity of the prepared catalysts. Moreover, the as-synthesized HR1 catalyst exhibited a remarkable ability to achieve 100% conversion at ∼107 °C, indicating enormous potential as a substitute for conventional noble metal catalysts. Furthermore, this study elucidates that the CO, adsorbed on the Cu+ sites, is oxidized by the lattice oxygen of CuO. The O2 present in the feed gas plays a crucial role in replenishing the oxygen vacancies created during this process, thereby facilitating efficient recycling of the catalytic reaction. The presented mechanism analysis of CuO/TiO2/Ti monolithic catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation provides a theoretical basis for the design of catalysts.

Abstract:The controllable self-assembly of nanomaterials remains a great challenge in nanotechnological applications, especially for the hierarchical structure with high complexity. Herein, by taking the advantage of highly dispersed metal nodes and mild thermal stability of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the self-assembly of nanoparticles is directed from MOFs to construct CuO hierarchical structures, which have an inherited octahedral framework consisting of the microspheres, nanowires, and polyhedrons, respectively. Unlike the conventional self-assembly in a solution media (such as solvent and molten solid), the assembly in this work is the first demonstration through a solution-free approach. Moreover, compared to the general MOF-derived CuO octahedron, the assembled hierarchical CuO structure exhibits much enhanced catalytic activity in CO oxidation thanks to the exposure of more active sites during the assembly.

Abstract:The development of low-temperature and water-resistant heterogeneous catalysts without noble metals is vital in the effective treatment of atmospheric pollutants in practical application. Herein, we report that Cu(I)-O-Co interfaces of ultrafine CuOx on Co3O4 prepared by co-precipitation exhibit promising low-temperature activity and good water resistance. Experiment results together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations not only verify that Cu+ species are stabilized over Cu(I)-O-Co interfaces because of the strong interaction between Cu2O1 and Co3O4, but also demonstrate that the Cu(I)-O-Co interface facilitates oxygen species activation for promoting catalytic oxidation and reduces the accumulation of hydroxyl and bicarbonate species on the surface of CuOx/Co3O4. DFT calculations also reveal that the CO oxidation rate-limiting step via the dissociation pathway under dry conditions is the Co-OO-Cu species dissociation while the CO coupling with the adsorbed O2 becomes the rate determining step for CO oxidation through the direct pathway over Cu(I)-O-Co interface under humid conditions. Further, the CuOx/Co3O4 catalyst also exhibits superior and stable catalytic activity for toluene oxidation, comparable with partial supported noble metal catalysts (T90 = 190 degrees C). The present work gives a useful strategy for the rational design of low-temperature and water-resistant non-precious-based catalysts to be applicable in CO and toluene removal in practical applications.

Abstract:Novel three-dimensional octagonal-like CuO micro-/nanostructures with diameters ranging from 10 to. 15 mu m have been successfully prepared by hydrogen peroxide-assisted hydrothermal method and subsequent calcination. The product morphology can be changed by simply ordering the amount of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). When the amounts of H2O2 is increased, the length of the corner portion is increased and the width is narrower. The obtained octagonal CuO nanostructures were evaluated for their ability for the degradation of hazardous organic contaminants in water under visible-light irradiation. Comparing with commercial CuO and other CuO products, the CuO octagonal nanostructures exhibit excellent performance for photocatalytic decomposition of RhB (Rhodamine B). It is well established that effective photocatalytic performance results from its unique 3D octagonal nano structures. We believe that the present work will provide some ideas for further fabrication of other novel nanostructures and exploration of their applications. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier B.V.
Facile Microwave Synthesis of Hierarchical Porous Copper Oxide and Its Catalytic Activity and Kinetics for Carbon Monoxide Oxidation

Abstract:The synthesis of copper oxide (CuO)-based nanomaterials has received a tremendous deal of interest in recent years. Particularly, the design and development of novel CuO structures with improved physical and chemical properties have attracted immense attention, especially for catalysis applications. We report on a rational, rapid, and surfactant-free microwave synthesis (MWS) of hierarchical porous copper oxide (HP-CuO) with a three-dimensional (3D) sponge-like topology using an MWS reactor. The activity of the microwave (MW)-synthesized HP-CuO catalysts for carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation was studied and compared to CuO prepared by the conventional heating method (CHM). Results showed that HP-CuO catalysts prepared by MWS for 10 and 30 min surpassed the CuO catalyst prepared by CHM, exhibiting T 80 of 98 and 115 °C, respectively, as compared to 185 °C of CuO prepared by CHM (T80 is the temperature corresponding to 80% CO conversion). In addition, the MW-synthesized HP-CuO catalysts outperformed the CHM-synthesized CuO, achieving a 100% CO conversion at 150 °C compared to 240 °C in the case of CuO prepared by CHM. Interestingly, the HP-CuO catalyst expressed workable CO conversion kinetics with a reaction rate of c.a.35 μmol s-1 g-1 at 150 °C and apparent activation energy (E a) of 82 kJ mol-1. The HP-CuO catalyst showed excellent cycling and long-term stabilities for CO oxidation up to 4 cycles and 72 h on the stream, respectively. The enhanced catalytic activity and stability of the HP-CuO catalyst appear to result from the unique topological and structural features of HP-CuO, which were revealed by SEM, XRD, Raman, BET, TGA, XPS, and TPR techniques.
Cu2O-Au Nanocomposites with Novel Structures and Remarkable Chemisorption Capacity and Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:The decomposition of CuH nanoparticles in aqueous solution has been successfully developed as a novel method for the preparation of Cu 2 O nanoparticles. In particular, we found that the decomposition of CuH nanoparticles in aqueous solution could be catalyzed by Au colloids, forming Cu 2 O-Au nanocomposites. The composition and structure of the resulting Cu 2 O-Au nanocomposites have been characterized in detail by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Their visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity toward various dye molecules has also been investigated. Depending on the Au:Cu ratio, Cu 2 O-Au nanocomposites exhibit different novel nanostructures including a beautiful flower-like nanostructure that consists of polycrystalline Cu 2 O, amorphous Cu 2 O and Au colloids. We propose that the rapidly-generated bubbles of H 2 during the course of the catalytic decomposition reaction drive the simultaneously-formed Cu 2 O to form amorphous curved thin foils and might also act as a template to assemble curved thin foils of amorphous Cu 2 O, polycrystalline Cu 2 O and Au colloids into uniform nanostructures. A Cu 2 O-Au nanocomposite with a Cu:Au ratio of 40 exhibits remarkable chemisorption capacity and visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity towards methyl orange and acid orange 7 and is a promising chemisorption-photocatalysis integrated catalyst. The catalytic decomposition of the metal hydride might open up a new approach for the fabrication of other metal/metal oxide nanocomposites with novel nanostructures and properties.
