Abstract:The formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the C11H11 potential energy surface involved in the reactions of a phenyl radical (C6H5) with cis-3-penten-1-yne (cis-C1H[triple bond, length as m-dash]C2-C3H[double bond, length as m-dash]C4H-C5H3, referred to as C5H6) and its three radicals (CH[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Ċ[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-CH3, CH[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]Ċ-CH3, and cis-CH[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH-ĊH2, referred to as the C3-, C4-, and C5-radicals with the same chemical components, C5H5) assisted by H atoms is investigated by performing combined density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio calculations. Five potential pathways for the formation of PAHs have been explored in detail: Pathways I-II correspond to the reaction of C6H5 with C5H6 at the C1 and C2 position, and Pathways III-V involve the reaction of C6H5 with the C3-, C4-, and C5-radicals with the assistance of H atoms. The initial association of C6H5 with C5H6 or C5H5 is found to be highly exothermic with only minor barriers (1.4-7.1 kcal mol-1), which provides a large driving force for the formation of PAHs. The hydrogen atom is beneficial for the ring enlargement and ring formation processes. The present calculations predict 9 potential PAHs, six (CS6, CS10, CS13, CS26, CS28 and CS29) of which are indicated to be energetically more favorable along Pathways I, III, IV and V at low temperature. The calculated barriers for the formation of these PAHs are around 19.2-38.0 kcal mol-1. All PAHs products could be formed at flame temperature, for the medium barriers are easily overcome in various flame conditions. The theoretical results supplement the PAH formation pathway and provide help to understand PAH growth mechanism.

Abstract:The growth of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) can proceed via multiple chemical mechanisms. The mechanism of naphthyl radical and vinylacetylene (C4H4) addition reaction has been systematically investigated in this computational study. A combination of DFT/B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p), CCSD/6-311+G(d,p) and CBS-QB3 methods were performed to calculate the potential energy surfaces. It revealed that the products, including phenanthrene, anthracene, a PAH with a five-membered ring structure, and PAH with a C4H3 radical substitution, can be formed in A2-1 (1-naphthyl)+C4H4 and A2-2 (2-naphthyl) +C4H4 reaction networks. The reaction rate constants at 0.1-100 atm were evaluated by RRKM theory by solving the master equation in the temperature range of 800–2500 K, which showed that the rate constants of reactions A2-1 (A2-2)+C4H4→product+H are highly temperature-dependent but nearly pressure-independent. The distribution of products was investigated in a 0-D batch reactor, wherein the initial reactant concentrations were taken from experimental measurements. The results showed that adduct intermediates were the main products at low temperature (T < 1000 K), and the phenanthrene and PAH with C4H3 radical substitution became the dominant products at temperatures where PAHs and soot form in flames (T > 1000 K). It was observed that a significant amount of phenanthrene is formed from PAH with a C4H3 radical substitution with the assistance of H atom. Reaction pathway sensitivity analysis for the PAH radical+C4H4 reaction system was performed and showed that the new benzene rings are more likely to be generated near the zig-zag edge surface site instead of the free edge. For the development of a PAH mechanism, the analogous treatment of rate constants for larger PAH radical + C4H4 reaction system are discussed. The formation rate of naphthalene from the reaction of phenyl+C4H4 was found to be very close to that of phenanthrene from the reaction of naphthyl+C4H4, suggesting that the analogous treatment of the rates is reasonable in PAH mechanisms.
Theoretical Study of PAH Growth by Phenylacetylene Addition

Abstract:Although there was significant advancement on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) formation, current mechanisms are still limited in providing an integrated and accurate scheme of PAH yield in combustion conditions; thus, a more detailed and comprehensive understanding is necessary. This work provides a systematic investigation of PAH growth by phenylacetylene addition. A combination of the density functional theory (DFT/B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p)) and the complete basis set method (CBS-QB3) is utilized to calculate the potential energy surfaces. The reaction system is initiated by the H elimination reaction of phenylacetylene + H → o-ethynylphenyl + H2, and then, the addition reaction of phenylacetylene and o-ethynylphenyl can produce PAHs with one, two, three, and four rings. The temperature- and pressure-dependent reaction rate coefficients are calculated via a combination of conventional transition state theory (TST) and Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) theory with solving the master equation in the temperature range of 500-2500 K and at the pressure range of 0.01-10 atm. There are 263 species and 65 reactions in this reaction system. It shows that the rate constants of this reaction system are highly temperature-dependent and slightly sensitive to the pressure at temperatures lower than 1300 K. To evaluate the yield distributions of various PAH products in the whole reaction network, a closed 0-D batch reactor model in Chemkin is used to calculate the C6H5C2H-C2H2-H-Ar reaction system. The results showed that the prevailing products of this system are three-ring PAHs with side chain structures. Compared with the traditional HACA pathways, the investigated reaction system presents higher efficiency in large PAH formations, which could subsequently promote the formation of soot particles. The phenylacetylene and o-ethynylphenyl reaction network emphasizes the importance of species with side chains, and it enriches current PAH growth pathways aside from the addition of small species such as C2H2.

Abstract:Detailed mechanisms of PAH growth involving methylene (CH2) were studied using accurate ab initio density functional theory B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) calculations, as well as approximate QCISD(T,full)/6-311++G(3df,2pd) calculations. The PAH growth can be divided into five essential reaction steps, namely, addition C2H2 -> intramolecular hydrogen migration -> addition CH2 -> cyclization -> H-elimination. The aliphatic species of indene and 1H-phenalene are found in the pathways of PAH growth, which is in accord with the experimental results that reveal the formation of aliphatic species in flames. It was found that the simultaneous removal of two H atoms in one reaction step is feasible in PAH evolution, and this can reasonably interpret the absence of a H atom in the post-flame region. The corresponding rate coefficients at 1 atm were evaluated by using TST and RRKM theory by solving the master equations in the temperature range of 500-2500 K. The calculated branching ratios suggest that the pathways involving CH2 are competitive in PAH growth.

Abstract:Nitrogen-containing aromatics, including nitrogen-substituted monocyclic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs), are toxic and a specific type of combustion emissions arising from fuel-nitrogen in coal and protein-rich biomass. However, the formation chemistry of pyridine, the first nitrogen heterocyclic ring in NPAHs, is poorly understood and needs to be enhanced. In this work, we investigated the chemistry of pyridine formation based on experimental measurements and theoretical reaction pathway exploration. Three pyrolysis experiments were performed in a jet stirred reactor with reactants of acetylene, acetylene + acetonitrile, and acetylene + acrylonitrile. The large molecule products were collected offline and analyzed by comprehensive two-dimensional (2D) gas chromatogram with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC x GC - ToF - MS) for species identification and measurements. Guided by experimental results, four pyridine formation pathways, C2H2 + C2H2CN radical, C2H3CN + C2H3 radical, CH2CN + C3H3 radical, and HCN + n-C4H5 radical are proposed and investigated. The calculated product yields and reaction rate coefficients determined by the combination of high-level quantum chemistry and RRKM-ME theories, and the simulated mole fractions by kinetic modeling confirmed the importance of the proposed pyridine formation pathways. The unraveled pyridine formation chemistry may help explain how the first nitrogen heterocyclic ring is formed from fuel-nitrogen in biomass gas-phase combustion.
The site effect on PAHs formation in HACA-based mass growth process

Abstract:Hydrogen-abstraction/acetylene-addition (HACA) pathway has long been postulated as the dominant pathway for the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and the surface growth of soot. In this study, the site effect on PAH formation following HACA pathway is systematically investigated using density functional theory, transition state theory and premixed flame kinetic modeling. The entire reaction network includes 186 elementary reactions, starting from benzene to pyrene. Analysis of the potential energy surface and kinetic parameters show that H abstraction and C2H2 addition reactions are greatly sensitive to the site position (ortho-, meta- and para-position) relative to the existing C2H chain and surface site type (zig-zag, free-edge and armchair). Specifically, H abstraction and C2H2 addition reactions on the ortho-position and armchair surface site are kinetically unsupported due to the relatively high energy barrier and orientation hindrance effect compared with other site options. Therefore, the formation of a new benzene ring by the addition of the second C2H2 molecule on the ortho-position (e.g., 1-ethynylnaphthalene + C2H2→phenanthrene) or the first C2H2 molecule on the armchair surface site (e.g., phenanthrene + C2H2→pyrene) is unlikely, as demonstrated by PAH simulations in a premixed C2H4/O2/N2 sooting flame. The yield distribution of various reaction products has been investigated using a 0-D reactor, where the combustion conditions are taken from experimental data. The results show that the dominant products are di-substituted PAHs in benzene-naphthalene reaction system and PAHs with 5-membered ring structures in larger PAHs reaction systems. The existence of abundant PAHs with 5-membered rings contributes to clarifying the PAHs signal detected using laser induced fluorescence technology. Additionally, the observed sequence of mass peaks at intervals of mass number 26 in C2H2/C2H4 pyrolysis is reasonably explained by the HACA pathway with considering site effect.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are globally concerned atmospheric particle-bound pollutants due to their toxicities. A mechanistic understanding of their formation from other environmental sources is of crucial importance for successful prevention of PAH. In the present work, the formation and growth mechanism of PAHs from the reactions of naphthalene with the cyclopentadienyl and indenyl radicals was investigated by using the hybrid density functional theory (DFT) at the MPWB1K/6-311+G(3df,2p)//MPWB1K/6-31+G(d,p) level. The rate constants for the crucial elementary steps were deduced with the aid of the canonical variational transition-state (CVT) theory with the small curvature tunneling (SCT) contribution. The formation of PAHs was involved in six elementary processes including: the addition reaction, ring closure, intramolecular H-shift, C-C cleavage, intramolecular H-shift and unimolecular elimination of CH3 or H. The C-C cleavage steps were revealed as the rate determining steps due to the extremely high barrier. At high temperature conditions like the combustion and pyrolysis of many hydrocarbons, the main products are phenanthrene, 4-methyl-phenanthrene and 1-methyl-phenanthrene from the reactions of naphthalene and cyclopentadienyl, and benzo(a)anthracene, 12-methyl-phenanthrene and 7-methyl-phenanthrene from the reactions of naphthalene and indenyl radicals. The reaction of naphthalene with indenyl radical is slightly more difficult than the reaction of naphthalene with cyclopentadienyl radical because of the bigger HOMO-LUMO orbital energy difference of naphthalene with indenyl relative to that of naphthalene with cyclopentadienyl.

Abstract:Resonance-stabilized cyclopentadienyl radicals are important intermediate species in the combustion of transportation fuels. It not only serves as precursors for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) formation, but also involves in the formation of fundamental PAH precursors such as propargyl and acetylene. In this work, the unimolecular reactions of the cyclopentadienyl radicals are theoretically studied based on high-level quantum chemistry and RRKM/master equation calculations. Stationary points on the potential energy surface (PES) are calculated at the CCSD(T)/CBS//M06–2X/6–311++(d,p) level of theory. The branching ratios of unimolecular reactions of the cyclopentadienyl radicals are analyzed for a broad temperature range from 500 to 2500 K and pressures from 0.01 to 100 atm. It is found that the isomerization reaction of the cyclopentadienyl radical via 1,2-hydrogen transfer dominates at low temperatures and high pressures, while the well-skipping decomposition reaction which forms propargyl and acetylene is important at high temperatures and low pressures. Both the decomposition reaction of the cyclopentadienyl radicals and its reverse reaction show pronounced pressure dependence, and their reaction rate constants are compared against available low-pressure experimental measurements and theoretical studies. The temperature- and pressure-dependent rate coefficients for important reactions involved on the C5H5 PES are calculated and updated in a chemical kinetic model. Impacts of the unimolecular reactions of the cyclopentadienyl radicals on the PAH formation are explored by the numerical modeling of a low-pressure cyclopentene counterflow diffusion flame.

Abstract:The exploration of the fundamental formation mechanisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is crucial for the understanding of molecular mass growth processes leading to two- and three-dimensional carbonaceous nanostructures (nanosheets, graphenes, nanotubes, buckyballs) in extraterrestrial environments (circumstellar envelopes, planetary nebulae, molecular clouds) and combustion systems. While key studies have been conducted exploiting traditional, high-temperature mechanisms such as the hydrogen abstraction–acetylene addition (HACA) and phenyl addition–dehydrocyclization (PAC) pathways, the complexity of extreme environments highlights the necessity of investigating chemically diverse mass growth reaction mechanisms leading to PAHs. Employing the crossed molecular beams technique coupled with electronic structure calculations, we report on the gas-phase synthesis of phenanthrene (C 14 H 10 )—a three-ring, 14π benzenoid PAH— via a phenylethynyl addition–cyclization–aromatization mechanism, featuring bimolecular reactions of the phenylethynyl radical (C 6 H 5 CC, X 2 A 1 ) with benzene (C 6 H 6 ) under single collision conditions. The dynamics involve a phenylethynyl radical addition to benzene without entrance barrier leading eventually to phenanthrene via indirect scattering dynamics through C 14 H 11 intermediates. The barrierless nature of reaction allows rapid access to phenanthrene in low-temperature environments such as cold molecular clouds which can reach temperatures as low as 10 K. This mechanism constitutes a unique, low-temperature framework for the formation of PAHs as building blocks in molecular mass growth processes to carbonaceous nanostructures in extraterrestrial environments thus affording critical insight into the low-temperature hydrocarbon chemistry in our universe.

New Insights Into Thermal Decomposition Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Oxyradicals

Abstract:Thermal decompositions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) oxyradicals on various surface sites including five-membered ring, free-edge, zigzag, and armchair have been systematically investigated by using ab initio density functional theory B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) basis set. The calculation based on Huckel theory indicates that PAHs (3H-cydopenta[a]anthracene oxyradical) with oxyradicals on a five-membered ring site have high chemical reactivity. The rate coefficients of PAH oxyradical decomposition were evaluated by using RiceRamspergerKasselMarcus theory and solving the master equations in the temperature range of 15002500 K and the pressure range of 0.110 atm. The kinetic calculations revealed that the rate coefficients of PAH oxyradical decomposition are temperature-, pressure-, and surface site-dependent, and the oxyradical on a five-membered ring is easier to decompose than that on a six-membered ring. Four-membered rings were found in decomposition of the five-membered ring, and a new reaction channel of PAH evolution involving four-membered rings is recommended.

Abstract:Ring-enlargement reactions can provide a fast route towards the formation of six-membered single-ring or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). To investigate the participation of the cyclopentadienyl (C5H5) radical in ring-enlargement reactions in high-temperature environments, a mass-spectrometric study was conducted. Experimental access to the C5H5 high-temperature chemistry was provided by two counterflow diffusion flames. Cyclopentene was chosen as a primary fuel given the large amount of resonantly stabilized cyclopentadienyl radicals produced by its decomposition and its high tendency to form PAHs. In a second experiment, methane was added to the fuel stream to promote methyl addition pathways and to assess the importance of ring-enlargement reactions for PAH growth. The experimental dataset includes mole fraction profiles of small intermediate hydrocarbons and of several larger species featuring up to four condensed aromatic rings. Results show that, while the addition of methane enhances the production of methylcyclopentadiene and benzene, the concentration of larger polycyclic hydrocarbons is reduced. The increase of benzene is probably attributable to the interaction between the methyl and the cyclopentadienyl radicals. However, the formation of larger aromatics seems to be dominated only by the cyclopentadienyl driven molecular-growth routes which are hampered by the addition of methane. In addition to the experimental work, two chemical mechanisms were tested and newly calculated reaction rates for cyclopentadiene reactions were included. In an attempt to assess the impact of cyclopentadienyl ring-enlargement chemistry on the mechanisms' predictivity, pathways to form benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene were investigated. Results show that the updated mechanism provides an improved agreement between the computed and measured aromatics concentrations. Nevertheless, a detailed study of the single reaction steps leading to toluene, styrene, and ethylbenzene would be certainly beneficial.
Numerical Simulation of PAH Formation Process in Ethanol/n-Heptane Combustion Flame

Abstract:The PAH formation mechanism of ethanol/n-heptane(including 241 species and 1703 reactions)was built using the CHEMKIN software. The PAH(benzene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, pyrene)formation process of ethanol/n-heptane in shock tube and premixed flame was studied. The effect of ethanol ratios on PAH formation process was analyzed. The formation rate(ROP)analysis results showed that benzene was mainly formed by the polymerization of propargyl and the hydrogenation reaction of phenyl. Naphthalene, phenanthrene, and pyrene were mainly formed by H-abstraction acetylene addition. The H and OH oxidation radicals can reduce the formation of PAH. The sensitivity analysis results showed that during the combustion process of ethanol/n-heptane, the decomposition reaction of pentyl, pentenyl, allyl and propyl promoted the formation of benzene. During the decomposition, with the increase of ethanol ratios, the concentration of reactive -OH increased and the formation rate of PAH decreased. Study results showed that ethanol can reduce PAH formation.

Abstract:Benzofuran (BF), benzothiophene (BT), indole (IN), dibenzofuran (DBF), dibenzothiophene (DBT), and carbazole (CA) are typical heterocyclic aromatic compounds (NSO-HETs), which can coexist with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in combustion and pyrolysis conditions. In this work, quantum chemical calculations were carried out to investigate the formation of DBF, DBT, and CA from the reactions of BF, BT, and IN with a cyclopentadienyl radical (CPDyl) by using the hybrid density functional theory (DFT) at the MPWB1K/6-311+G(3df,2p)//MPWB1K/6-31+G(d,p) level. The rate constants of crucial elementary steps were deduced over 600-1200 K, using canonical variational transition state theory with a small-curvature tunneling contribution (CVT/SCT). This paper showed that the production of DBF, DBT, and CA from the reactions of BF, BT, and IN with CPDyl involved six elementary steps: the addition reaction, ring closure, the first H shift, C-C cleavage, the second H shift, and elimination of CH3 or H. The cleavage of the C-C bond was regarded as the rate-determining step for each pathway due to the extremely high barrier. The 1-methyl substituted products were more easily formed than the 4-methyl substituted products. The main products were DBF and 1-methyl-DBF, DBT and 1-methyl-DBT, and CA and 1-methyl-CA for reactions of BF, BT, and IN with CPDyl, respectively. The ranking of DBF, DBT, and CA formation potential was as follows: DBT and methyl-DBT formation > DBF and methyl-DBF formation > CA, and methyl-CA formation. Comparison with the reaction of naphthalene with CPDyl indicated that the reactions of CPDyl attacking a benzene ring and a furan/thiophene/pyrrole ring could be inferred to be comparable under high temperature conditions.

Reaction dynamics of phenyl radicals in extreme environments: a crossed molecular beam study

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)organic compounds that consist of fused benzene ringsand their hydrogen-deficient precursors have attracted extensive interest from combustion scientists, organic chemists, astronomers, and planetary scientists. On Earth, PAHs are toxic combustion products and a source of air pollution. In the interstellar medium, research suggests that PAHs play a role in unidentified infrared emission bands, diffuse interstellar bands, and the synthesis of precursor molecules to life. To build clean combustion devices and to understand the astrochemical evolution of the interstellar medium, it will be critical to understand the elementary reaction mechanisms under single collision conditions by which these molecules form in the gas phase. Until recently, this work had been hampered by the difficulty in preparing a large concentration of phenyl radicals, but the phenyl radical represents one of the most important radical species to trigger PAH formation in high-temperature environments. However, we have developed a method for producing these radical species and have undertaken a systematic experimental investigation. In this Account, we report on the chemical dynamics of the phenyl radical (C(6)H(5)) reactions with the unsaturated hydrocarbons acetylene (C(2)H(2)), ethylene (C(2)H(4)), methylacetylene (CH(3)CCH), allene (H(2)CCCH(2)), propylene (CH(3)CHCH(2)), and benzene (C(6)H(6)) utilizing the crossed molecular beams approach. For nonsymmetric reactants such as methylacetylene and propylene, steric effects and the larger cones of acceptance drive the addition of the phenyl radical to the nonsubstituted carbon atom of the hydrocarbon reactant. Reaction intermediates decomposed via atomic hydrogen loss pathways. In the phenyl-propylene system, the longer lifetime of the reaction intermediate yielded a more efficient energy randomization compared with the phenyl-methylacetylene system. Therefore, two reaction channels were open: hydrogen losses from the vinyl and from the methyl groups. All fragmentation pathways involved tight exit transition states. In the range of collision energies investigated, the reactions are dictated by phenyl radical addition-hydrogen atom elimination pathways. We did not observe ring closure processes with the benzene ring. Our investigations present an important step toward a systematic investigation of phenyl radical reactions under single collision conditions similar to those found in combustion flames and in high-temperature interstellar environments. Future experiments at lower collision energies may enhance the lifetimes of the reaction intermediates, which could open up competing ring closure channels to form bicyclic reaction products.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) play important roles in the formation of combustion generated particles such as soot, but many details of the formation and growth of the PAHs are not yet completely understood. A novel phenyl addition/cyclization (PAC) mechanism has been suggested for the PAHs growth by Koshi et al. based on their experimental result and this PAC mechanism is theoretically investigated in the present work. B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) calculations are used to optimize the geometries of equilibrium and transition state structures as well as to obtain kinetic parameters with the single-point energies being calculated at BMK/6-311+G(3df,2p) level. Conventional transition state theory (TST) with Eckart tunneling correction is employed to calculate the rate coefficients in a temperature range from 300 to 2000K for all the elementary reactions involved in the formation of triphenylene from C6H5 addition to C12H10. Our calculated rate coefficient of the phenylation reaction of biphenyl is consistent with available literature value.
PAH Growth in Flames and Space: Formation of the Phenalenyl Radical

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are intermediates in the formation of soot particles and interstellar grains. However, their formation mechanisms in combustion and interstellar environments are not fully understood. The production of tricyclic PAHs and, in particular, the conversion of a PAH containing a five-membered ring to one with a six-membered ring are of interest to explain PAH abundances in combustion processes. In the present work, resonant ionization mass spectrometry in conjunction with isotopic labeling is used to investigate the formation of the phenalenyl radical from acenaphthylene and methane in an electrical discharge. We show that in this environment the CH cycloaddition mechanism converts a five-membered ring to a six-membered ring. This mechanism can occur in tandem with other PAH formation mechanisms such as hydrogen abstraction/acetylene addition (HACA) to produce larger PAHs in flames and the interstellar medium.

Abstract:Numerous experimental and theoretical evidence indicates that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) is the precursor of soot. However, the formation mechanism of PAH at flame conditions is not well understood. In this study, the growth of PAHs with a 5-membered ring via the hydrogen-abstraction-acetylene-addition route was systematically investigated using acenaphthylene (A2R5) as a model molecule. Potential energy surfaces were searched using DFT/B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) and ROCCSD(T)/cc-pVDZ methods. The reaction rate coefficients of elementary reactions were evaluated using the transition state theory in the temperature range of 500–2500 K. The results showed that H abstractions by H, OH, and CH3 radicals, and the subsequent C2H2 addition reactions, were highly sensitive to the 5-membered ring. H abstraction reaction from the C atom on a 5-membered ring is not favorable due to the relatively higher energy barrier among all competing reactions. In contrast, the reaction rate coefficient of subsequent C2H2 addition reaction on a 5-membered ring is the highest. The planar PAH with no substitution, planar PAH with C2H substitution, curved PAH with two adjacent 5-membered rings, and PAH with a CCH2C functional group, can be formed in the A2R5H-C2H2 system investigated. The reactions investigated were merged into a detailed PAH mechanism to check the product distribution in a premixed C2H4 sooting flame. Owing to the existence of the 5-membered ring, the formation of planar PAHs with a C2H substitution was much more favorable than the formation of new 5-membered ring and 6-membered rings. The predicted mole fraction of all C14H8 species with one C2H substitution was as high as 2.8 × 10−5, higher than that of phenanthrene with same C atom number (1.2 × 10−5). A similar phenomenon was observed for C16H8 species with two C2H substitutions. In the future, more attention should be given to PAHs with C2H substitution, due to their high concentrations and enhanced reactivity, as compared to the benzenoid PAH.

Abstract:A highly efficient growth mechanism of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) initiated and accelerated by phenyl radicals has been investigated on the basis of kinetic analysis of gas phase reaction products of pyrolysis of benzene with and without addition of acetylene and acetylene only. Pyrolytic reactions were performed in a flow tube reactor and the resulting products were detected by an in situ direct sampling mass spectrometric technique using a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) single photon ionization (SPI) time of flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS). The detected species varies from smaller to larger PAHs up to m/z = 454 (C(36)H(22)) including primary PAHs, polyphenyl-PAHs and cyclopentafused-PAHs (CP-PAHs). The peculiarity of this result is an appearance of mass peaks at regular mass number intervals of approximately 76 that correspond to phenyl-PAHs produced by phenyl radical addition (+C(6)H(5), +77) followed by hydrogen elimination (-H, -1). All such mass peaks were found diminishing with appearance of -2 mass number peaks with increasing temperatures, certainly due to a conversion of thermally rather unstable phenyl-PAHs into stable condensed PAHs through a dehydrocyclization (-H(2), -2) process. In the same way, in the case of only acetylene pyrolysis, mass peaks at regular mass number intervals of 24 corresponding to the HACA (hydrogen abstraction/C(2)H(2) addition) products, were observed. Kinetic analysis of formation pathways of those observed products showed the active role of PAC (phenyl addition/cyclization) because of its efficiency to continue the endless growth of PAHs, while the HACA was only found efficient for producing symmetrical PAHs by filling a triple fusing site (four carbon bay structure). Especially, acetylene was mixed with benzene to understand the impact of HACA on the PAC path ways that resulted in enhancement of phenyl-PAHs production in spite of trapping of active and chain carrier species phenyl radicals by C(2)H(2) to form phenylacetylene. The comparison of HACA and PAC concluded that PAC is a highly efficient mechanism for the growth of PAHs and lastly their combined roles in combustion have been discussed. Hopefully, PAC will be useful to understand the process of aromatic growth, from furnaces to stellar atmospheres.

Abstract:The extended polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have received significant interdisciplinary attention due to their semiconducting applications in diverse organic electronics as well as intriguing structural interests of well-defined graphene segments. Herein, a highly efficient oxidative spirocyclization and 1,2-aryl migration tandem synthetic method for the construction of extended polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been developed. The CuCl-catalyst/PhCO 3 t Bu or DDQ oxidation system in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid enables the selective single-electron oxidation to take place preferentially at the more electron-rich alkene moiety of o -biphenylyl-substituted methylenefluorenes, giving rise to the subsequent tandem process. A variety of structurally diverse extended PAHs including functionalized dibenzo[ g , p ]chrysenes, benzo[ f ]naphtho[1,2- s ]picene, hexabenzo[ a,c,fg,j,l,op ]tetracene, tetrabenzo[ a,c,f,m ]phenanthro[9,10- k ]tetraphene, tetrabenzo[ a,c,f,k ]phenanthro[9,10- m ]tetraphene, tetrabenzo[ a,c,f,o ]phenanthro[9,10- m ]picene and S -type helicene have been readily synthesized.
