Abstract:For the purpose of improving the photocatalytic performance of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) in the field of contaminant elimination, an in-situ malonamide-assisted strategy is provided to prepare carbon self-doping and structural defect co-modified g-C3N4 (CDCN) via preprocessing of the mixture of urea and malonamide followed by thermal copolymerization. Changing the initial malonamide dosage can precisely adjust the carbon doping level and structural defect concentration of CDCN. The characteristic results confirm that the doped C derived from malonamide was successfully implanted into the g-C3N4 framework by replacing sp2 hybrid N atoms (C−N=C) in the heptazine units, simultaneously forming some structural defects. Additionally, the preprocessing endows CDCN with good textural properties. So, the optimal CDCN20 shows remarkably enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity in eliminating acetaminophen (APAP) and methylparaben (MPB) in water than pristine g-C3N4. By combining experimental and theoretical calculating results, the synergistic effect of C self-doping and structural defect promoting the photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4 is revealed thoroughly. This work provides a controllable strategy for synthesizing effective C self-doped g-C3N4 and a new insight into electronic structure and band structure-regulated photocatalytic oxidation mechanisms.
Uracil-Doped Graphitic Carbon Nitride For Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:g-C3N4 is a visible-light photocatalyst with a suitable band gap and good stability. Moreover, g-C3N4 is considered to be earth-abundant, which makes it an appealing photocatalyst. However, due to its small specific surface area, low utilization of visible light, and high photogenerated electron-hole pair recombination rate, the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 remains unsatisfactory. In this work, a highly efficient nonmetallic photocatalyst, i.e., g-C3N4 doped with uracil (denoted U-C3N4) was successfully developed. Based on the various characterizations and calculations, it is shown that the triazine group in g-C3N4 is replaced with the diazine group in uracil. This occurrence leads to the formation of a new electron-transfer pathway between triazine groups, which can promote the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. Concurrently, due to the ultrathin structure of the as-prepared U-C3N4, the material possessed a larger specific surface area than pristine g-C3N4, which can provide more active sites. Furthermore, the transfer pathway between the electron and hole was also shortened, and the recombination of the electron and hole was inhibited. According to the results, an optimal hydrogen evolution rate of 31.7 mol h(-1) g(-1) was achieved by U-C3N4, which is 5.1 times higher as compared to that achieved by pristine g-C3N4 (6.26 mol h(-1) g(-1)). For the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B, the reaction rate constant of U-C3N4 (11.3 x 10(-2) min(-1)) is about 5.5 times that of g-C3N4 (2.07 x 10(-2) min(-1)). Furthermore, the uracil-doped catalyst was also able to demonstrate good stability after five successive runs.

Abstract:Hydroxyl-graphene quantum dots (GQDs) modified mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) composites were fabricated through electrostatic interactions. A variety of techniques were applied to discuss systematic effect on the morphology, optical, electronic properties and structure of GQDs/mpg-C3N4 composites. Remarkably, the 0.5 wt% GQDsimpg-C3N4 composites exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than that of the pure mpg-C3N4 by using rhodamine B (RhB) and colorless tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) as pollutants under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that uniform dispersion of GQDs on the surface of mpg-C3N4 and intimate contact between the two materials contributed to the enhanced activity. Radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance tests both certified that the GQDsimpg-C3N4 composites can generate more center dot O-2(-) species and a small fraction of holes for photocatalytic degradation. Abstract:Although the g-C3N4/TiO2 Z-scheme heterojunction has superior photocatalytic performance; however, photocatalytic efficiency is still limited by the fast recombination of photoexcited charges. Herein, we propose an electrostatic self-assembly technique to enhance the photocatalytic activity by decorating carbon quantum dots (CQDs) onto the heterojunction. The relationships among composition, phase structure, electrochemical and catalytic performances were investigated, indicating the adhesion of CQDs. A fantastic photocatalytic capability was achieved in 80 μL CQDs/g-C3N4/TiO2, and the photocatalytic activity exhibited exceptional stability and broad applicability for the degradation of rhodamine B (>99 %) and tetracycline hydrochloride (>91 %) under both ultraviolet and visible light irradiation, owing to the significant enhancement of photogenerated carrier separation by CQDs. In the photocatalytic reaction, h+ is the most essential active group through the free radical trapping experiment. This research serves as a guide for modifying photocatalysts. This study provides a promising system to promote photocatalytic efficiency, and the CQDs/g-C3N4/TiO2 to be used for antibiotic and organic pollutant removal on a large scale.

Abstract:The rapid recombination rate of photogenerated carriers in TiO2 has been limiting the photocatalytic performance. Herein, TiO2 thin flakes modified by g-C3N4 quantum dots (g-C3N4 QDs) were fabricated successfully through a facile thermal treatment of restacked single-layer nanosheets of Ti1.73O4 1.07- in the presence of urea as a source of g-C3N4 QDs. Characterizations showed that g-C3N4 QDs with a size of ~10 nm were homogeneously deposited on the surface of TiO2 thin flakes. Quenching experiments of •OH radicals and the detection of radicals by EPR certified the direct Z-scheme heterojunctions between g-C3N4 QDs and TiO2 flakes. The TiO2 nanoflakes/g-C3N4 QDs hybrid exhibited excellent activity for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from a methanol solution and the degradation of RhB due to the enhanced charge separation efficiency and improved light absorption in the direct Z-scheme heterojunctions. This study demonstrates that the rational design of heterojunction is effective for attaining the superior photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Photocatalytic conversion of CO2 can provide a solution for simultaneously addressing global warming and solar fuel generation. However, its applicability is presently limited by the unsatisfactory photoconversion efficiency of the state-of-art photocatalysts. In this regard, enhancing CO2 adsorption through surface modification could be an efficient way to improve the photoconversion efficiency. Herein, doping of nonpolar carbon quantum dots (CQDs) onto g-C3N4 is reported for the construction of a metal-free heterojunction photocatalyst (CQDs/g-C3N4). CQDs offer several advantages such as band-gap reduction and electron-withdrawing effect to improve light absorption and photocarrier separation efficiency. However, this study reveals that nonpolar CQDs could also improve CO2 adsorption, photoinduced H-2 production, reaction kinetics, and alter CO2 photoreduction pathways to generate CH4. Consequently, the CQDs/g-C3N4 could generate six times more CO and CH4 without detectable H-2 compared to pristine g-C3N4, under similar conditions. Therefore, this study demonstrates a promising strategy for efficient adsorption, activation, and subsequent photoreduction of CO2 by nonpolar surface modification of g-C3N4.
Designing nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped graphene quantum dots/g-C3N4 heterojunction composites to enhance visible and ultraviolet photocatalytic activity

Abstract:In metal-free g-C3N4 based materials, the rapid recombination of photoexcited carriers limits its photocatalytic activity. In this work, for the first time, we synthesized a new kind of diatomic-doped graphene quantum dots (GQDs), namely, nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped GQDs (NP-GQDs), and then loaded on g-C3N4 surface to obtain NP-GQDs / g-C3N4 composite photocatalyst. Under visible and ultraviolet irradiation, the MO photodegradation rate of NP-GQDs / g-C3N4 is as high as 97.5% and 96%, respectively, which was 1.71 and 1.85 times higher than that of pure g-C3N4. The remarkable enhancement of photodegradation activity is mainly attributed to the introduction of NP-GQDs could promote the formation, transportation and separation of photoexcited carriers. Furthermore, the photocatalyst exhibits outstanding recycle stability without a significant decrease in activity after three reused runs. This study provides a new understanding of the roles played by diatomic-doped graphene quantum dots in photocatalytic systems and provides a new prospect in developing highly efficient g-C3N4-based photocatalysts.

One-step thermal polymerization synthesis of nitrogen-rich g-C3N4 nanosheets enhances photocatalytic redox activity

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) has attracted enormous attention as a visible-light-responsive carbon-based semiconductor photocatalyst. However, fast charge recombination seriously limits its application. Therefore, it is urgent to modify the electronic structure of g-C 3 N 4 to obtain excellent photocatalytic activity. Herein, we reported a one-step thermal polymerization synthesis of nitrogen-rich g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets. Benefiting from the N self-doping and the ultrathin structure, the optimal CN-70 exhibits its excellent performance. A 6.7 times increased degradation rate of rhodamine B ( K = 0.06274 min −1 ), furthermore, the hydrogen evolution efficiency also reached 2326.24 μmol h −1 g −1 ( λ > 420 nm). Based on a series of characterizations and DFT calculations, we demonstrated that the N self-doping g-C 3 N 4 can significantly introduce midgap states between the valence band and conduction band, which is more conducive to the efficient separation of photogenerated carriers. Our work provides a facile and efficient method for self-atom doping into g-C 3 N 4 , providing a new pathway for efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:g-C 3 N 4 is an attractive photocatalysts due to its visible-light response, earth abundance, chemical-thermal stability and high yield. However, the major limitation stems from the C-N forming π-conjugated planes along with relatively small electron mean free path (~10 nm) and high symmetry, which impedes the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers. Fortunately, defect design on g-C 3 N 4 can effectively enhance the migration of photogenerated electrons by three aspects: 1) tuning charge redistribution within g-C 3 N 4 ; 2) changing surface microstructures; 3) creating new and same electron excitation orbital direction. In this review, the different strategies and mechanisms of defect engineering are classified and summarized from the perspective of breaking the structural symmetry with increasing or decreasing the atoms in a g-C 3 N 4 system. Defect modification methods with an increased atomic number include element doping (C/N self-doping and external element doping) and functionalization (functional group modification), and with a decreased number of atoms mainly referring to C or N or dual vacancies are well outlined. Accordingly, the application and mechanism of defect-modified g-C 3 N 4 in multiple fields (e.g., volatile organic compounds (VOCs) oxidation, NO x oxidation, H 2 O 2 evolution, sterilization, pesticide oxidation, hydrogen evolution, N 2 fixation and CO 2 reduction) are highlighted. This review is performed to draw a comprehensive conclusion on the defect modification strategy and photocatalytic mechanism of g-C 3 N 4 and prospect a development trend in the future.

Abstract:Establishing an effective charge transfer mechanism in carbon nitride (g-C3N4) to enhance its photocatalytic activity remains a limiting nuisance. Herein, the combination design of a single Cu atom with hollow g-C3N4 nanospheres (Cu-N3 structure) has been proven to offer significant opportunities for this crucial challenge. Moreover, this structure endows two pathways for charge transfer in the reaction, namely, the N atoms in the three-dimensional planar structure are only bonded with a single Cu atom, and charge transfer occurs between the plane and the layered structure due to the bending of the interlayered g-C3N4 hollow nanospheres. Notably, Cu-N3 and hollow nanosphere structures have been certified to greatly enhance the efficiency of photogenerated carrier separation and transfer between the layers and planes by ultrafast spectral analysis. As a result, this catalyst possesses unparalleled photocatalytic efficiency. Specifically, the hydrogen production rate up to 2040 μmol h−1 g−1, which is 51 times that of pure C3N4 under visible light conditions. The photocatalytic degradation performance of tetracycline and oxidation performance of benzene is also expressed, with a degradation rate of 100%, a conversion of 97.3% and a selectivity of 99.9%. This work focuses on the structure-activity relationship to provide the possibilities for the development of potential photocatalytic materials.

Abstract:Photocatalysis has been prominently featured as a promising technology for solving environmental problems and energy crises. The incorporation of supported non-metallic cocatalysts is paramount in significantly augmenting the efficiency and performance of semiconductor photocatalysis. N-GQD/CN was successfully prepared and showed excellent performance in terms of light-absorbing capacity, carrier separation efficiency and visible-light driving. The findings underscore the exceptional photocatalytic prowess of the 0.02 wt.% N-GQD/CN composites, particularly in the degradation of RhB, HCl-TC, and BPA under visible light irradiation. The 0.02 wt.% N-GQD/CN composite could eliminate 91.2 % RhB in 90 min, remove 72.4 % of the HCl-TC in 180 min, and degrade 47.9 % of the BPA in 4 h. All of the activities of the 0.02 wt.% N-GQD/CN was superior to that of the monomer g-CN. This elevated photocatalytic performance can be predominantly attributed to the N-GQDs acting as co-catalysts. These N-GQDs possess substantial specific surface areas, effectively enhancing light absorption and facilitating synergistic interactions with g-CN nanosheets. Exploring the utility of N-GQD/CN using ionic interference and pH photocatalysis experiments. The present work provides a rational strategy for designing 0D/2D photocatalysts with improved visible light activity for environmental applications.

Abstract:Porous g-C 3 N 4 composed of nanosheets (p-gCN-NS) was synthesized through firstly grinding the hydrochloric acid-treated melamine with ammonium chloride (NH 4 Cl) and then calcining the mixture at 550° C for 2 h. The photocatalytic properties were determined by degrading Rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline (TC) aqueous solution (10 mg/L, 100 mL). Results show that the crystallinity, size and thickness of g-C 3 N 4 in p-gCN-NS reduced dramatically compared with those in g-C 3 N 4 sample synthesized without the addition of NH 4 Cl (gCN). Specific surface area of p-gCN-NS was 63.65 m 2 ·g −1 , which was 6.7 times that of gCN. After photocatalysis for 50 min, the degradation rate of RhB achieved 99.32% by p-gCN-NS (100 mg), whose reaction rate constant ( k = 0.09317 min −1 ) was 10.6 times higher than that of gCN. p-gCN-NS also exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for degrading colorless tetracycline aqueous solution. The significant improvement of photocatalytic performance can be credited to the reduced sized and thickness of g-C 3 N 4 , higher specific surface area and pore structure, as well as the weakened recombination rate of photogenerated electron–hole pairs in p-gCN-NS. This work provides a feasible and facile method for synthesis porous g-C 3 N 4 composed of nanosheets with excellent photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we used a facile ball milling, microwave radiation and heating treatment method to achieve the surface modification of TiO2 with low g-C3N4 concentration, and a multilayer heterojunction composite with TiO2 as the main part and g-C3N4 as the modification agent was obtained. The obtained materials were analyzed by several characterizations to get information on their chemical composition, crystalline structure, vibrational features and optical properties. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated by degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB) under UV, visible and direct solar light irradiation. Its photocatalytic activity was enhanced depended on the novel structure of g-C3N4/TiO2 hybrid and the special Z-scheme electron-hole transfer model of multilayer heterointerfaces. The material preparation and structural features could be useful for the design and development of other photocatalysts with high photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:A novel g-C3N4 composite photocatalyst was synthesized by one-step calcination using melamine and different functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) as raw materials. The effect of additives on the photocatalytic performance of the composite g-C3N4 has been investigated. The results showed that the incorporation of functionalized MWCNT led to a porous structure in g-C3N4, increasing the specific surface area and availability of active sites. The addition of hydroxylated/carboxylated MWCNT (HMWCNT/CMWCNT) affected the band structure of g-C3N4 and reduced the band gap. The visible-light photocatalytic degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B (RhB) using g-C3N4 composited with various types and amounts of MWCNT was evaluated. Among them, g-C3N4 with 1 wt% CMWCNT showed the highest photocatalytic degradation efficiency of RhB and still had 92.71% photocatalytic activity after 5 cycles of degradation.

Abstract:Defect engineering is an effective strategy to broadening light harvesting range and boosting photogenerated charge carriers separation efficiency of semiconductor photocatalyst. The photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 is expected to be improved by introducing conductive C species. Here, we developed a facile approach to prepare C-modified g-C3N4 by co-polymerization of melamine and long-chain hydrocarbon, cetyltrimethylammonium chloride. The light harvesting capacity was significantly enhanced by the successful introduction of C-containing groups on the edge with preserving the tri-s-triazine framework structure. The enhanced light absorption ability can provide a prerequisite for effective charge generation. The production amounts of electrons, hydroxyl and superoxide radical were all increased according to the electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. Photocurrent and photoluminescence measurements demonstrated the recombination of charge carriers was effectively restrained, thus the reactive species can be separated and transferred, then participate in redox reactions efficiently. The H2 generation rate and methylene blue degradation efficiency was improved accordingly, manifesting the generation and utilization efficiency of photoexcited reactive species were effectively promoted. The edge C species modification on the tri-s-triazine framework by long-chain alkanes in our work provide an alternative way to improve the reactive species generation ability, which is helpful in enhancing the utilization efficiency of solar energy.

Abstract:In this paper, spherical g-C3N4 modified by N defect and O doping was prepared by a simple hydrothermal method, and combined with CdS to form a direct Z-type heterojunction. Combined with a series of characterizations (XRD, SEM, BET, FTIR and UV–vis DRS), the results show that the addition of CTAB brings a lot of positive charges on the surface of N-OCN. According to the principle of electrostatic attraction, positively charged N-OCN negatively charged CdS attract each other, which strengthens the close contact between CdS and N-OCN and plays an important role in stabilizing the formation of heterojunction. CdS is anchored to N-OCN through electrostatic interaction. Under the irradiation of visible light, the electrons on CB on positively charged N-OCN combine with holes on negatively charged CdS valence band, which improves the redox ability in photocatalytic reaction system. Taking methyl orange (MO) as a pollutant degradation model, the possible degradation mechanism was discussed in detail. This study provides a simple, effective and wide application method for the modification of g-C3N4.

Abstract:Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts based on g-C 3 N 4 generally need to recombine g-C 3 N 4 and a wide bandgap semiconductor. This structure is limited by the large bandgap of the constituent material, which can effectively suppress carrier recombination while limiting the absorption of visible light. Due to the superior up-conversion photoluminescence properties of the carbon quantum dots (CQDs), this dilemma can be solved ingeniously by adding CQDs to the composite. Moreover, the charge reservoirs of CQDs are conducive to the charge carrier separation effect. In this work, a novel CQDs-modified Z-type photocatalyst is constructed and the successful implantation of CQDs is demonstrated. The composite catalyst exhibits broad-spectrum response to visible light and the overall performance is obviously superior to that of the binary MoO 3 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction. The high efficiency and versatility of the degradation imply that the newly prepared CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 /MoO 3 is a versatile photocatalyst for the removal of various target pollutants in the environment.

Abstract:A facile one-step hydrothermal process is presented for fabrication of graphitic carbon nitride/carbon nanodots (g-C3N4/C-dots) composite photocatalyst. XRD, SEM, TEM, UV-Vis DRS and PL were adopted to analyze the effect of C-dots modification on the structure and properties of g-C3N4. Photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4/C-dotswas evaluated by the degradation ofmethyl orange (MO) under different conditions. The results show that C-dots can increase photocatalytic reaction rate of g-C3N4/C-dots composite under visible-light irradiation, especially in the presence of H2O2. C-dots act as electron-sinks, therefore preventing the recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. Meanwhile, H2O2 not only acts as an oxygen-donor to make contribution to generation of O-2, but can directly react with the photo-generated electrons transferred from the conduction band of g-C3N4 to C-dots, leading to the formation of center dot OH active group, which promotes the degradation of MO. Therefore the photocatalytic activities of g-C3N4/C-dots can be improved significantly when adding H2O2 to the photocatalytic reaction system. (C) 2017 The Electrochemical Society. Abstract:In the present study, an innovative carbon self-doped g-C3N4 (CCN) loaded with ultra-low CeO2 (0.067–0.74 wt%) composite photocatalyst is successfully synthesized via a facile one-pot hydrothermal and calcination method. The CeO2/CCN exhibits superior photocatalytic performance for tetracycline degradation (78.9% within 60 min), H2O2 production (151.92 μmol L-1 within 60 min), and Cr(VI) reduction (99.5% within 40 min), which much higher than that of g-C3N4, CCN, CeO2, and CeO2/g-C3N4. The enhanced photocatalytic performance is originated from the fact that the doping of C can efficaciously broaden the utilization range of solar light and improve the reduction ability of photogenerated electrons. Meanwhile, the ultra-low loading of CeO2 can effectually promote the migration of photogenerated electrons and enhance the specific surface area. Besides, the experiments of pH effect and cycle ability indicate that CeO2/CCN has excellent durability and stability. Finally, the photocatalytic mechanism of CeO2/CCN is systematically discussed. This work proves that combining element doping and semiconductor coupling is a promising strategy to design high-efficiency g-C3N4-based photocatalysts.
