Abstract:The efficiency of OLEDs is fundamentally determined by the spin of excited state electrons. We have previously shown, using a new class of emissive molecules, carbene-metal-amides (CMA), an unusual emission pathway based on spin-state inter-conversion - intramolecular rotation induces a shift in the relative energies of the first excited singlet and triplet states, leading to extremely efficient singlet-triplet state interconversion and photoemission. In our recent work, we report solution-processed dual-dopant polymer LEDs, in which highly efficient electroluminescence occurs via an intermolecular energy transfer from CMAs to a fluorescent emitter. With electroluminescence from the simple fluorophore, we obtained record EQEs of >20% in these devices. Photophysical measurements indicate that ultrafast inter-fluorophore energy transfer occurs with near-unity efficiency. They preserve the relative colour purity of simple fluorophores, potential for energy-efficient printable electronics.

Abstract:Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) promise highly efficient lighting and display technologies. We introduce a new class of linear donor-bridge-acceptor light-emitting molecules, which enable solution-processed OLEDs with near-100% internal quantum efficiency at high brightness. Key to this performance is their rapid and efficient utilization of triplet states. Using time-resolved spectroscopy, we establish that luminescence via triplets occurs within 350 nanoseconds at ambient temperature, after reverse intersystem crossing to singlets. We find that molecular geometries exist at which the singlet-triplet energy gap (exchange energy) is close to zero, so that rapid interconversion is possible. Calculations indicate that exchange energy is tuned by relative rotation of the donor and acceptor moieties about the bridge. Unlike other systems with low exchange energy, substantial oscillator strength is sustained at the singlet-triplet degeneracy point.

Abstract:Solution-processed polymer organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) doped with triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA)-upconversion molecules, including 9,10-diphenylanthracene, perylene, rubrene and TIPS-pentacene, are reported. The fraction of triplet-generated electroluminescence approaches the theoretical limit. Record-high efficiencies in solution-processed OLEDs based on these materials are achieved. Unprecedented solid-state TTA-upconversion quantum yield of 23% (TTA-upconversion reaction efficiency of 70%) at electrical excitation well below one-sun equivalent is observed.

Abstract:The integration of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) into modern electronics has affirmed their role in next-generation display technologies, presenting advantages in energy efficiency, flexibility, large-area fabrication, and low-cost solution processability. Maintaining high luminance and color purity in OLEDs is an important goal, particularly for high-efficiency devices utilizing triplet excitons. Here, we report solution-processed dual-dopant polymer LEDs, in which highly efficient electroluminescence occurs via an intermolecular energy transfer from carbenemetal-amides (CMAs) (which exhibit rapid singlet-triplet interconversion) to a fluorescent rubrene derivative. This design enables solution-processed OLEDs with external quantum efficiencies of >20% (corresponding to near 100% internal quantum efficiencies) and a peak luminance of 75,000 cd m(-2). We show that the emission originates from the singlet state of the rubrene derivative. Ultrafast optical measurements indicate that the inter-fluorophore energy transfer occurs within 0.3 ps, at an efficiency of >96%. Such devices preserve the relatively narrow emission bandwidth of conventional fluorophores for color purity, showing potential in energy-efficient printable electronics.

Abstract:Current materials leaders in OLED technology are largely based on phosphorescent iridium complexes and Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF) materials which emit by harvesting light from all excited states ensuring nearly 100% internal quantum efficiency (IQE). Although, high efficiency red, green and blue OLEDs were realized, very short operating stability remains a fundamental challenge for blue OLEDs. Here we present our materials design strategy.We have recently designed numerous linear coinage metal complexes with efficient photo- and electroluminescent properties.[1,2] Our materials are composed of the donor and acceptor ligands which are linked by a coinage metal atom. Linear geometry of coinage metal complexes enables rotational flexibility. Rotation about the metal-ligand bond allowed us to tune the energy gap between singlet and triplet excited states. When the gap is close to zero, facile intersystem crossing and reversed intersystem crossing are possible which enables efficient singlet and triplet excited state harvesting. Depending on the value of the energy gap we have designed various functional materials with phosphorescent or delayed fluorescence properties. As a proof of concept, we fabricated OLED devices with exceptionally high external quantum efficiencies (>28% EQE) in both solution-processed and vacuum-deposited OLEDs.[3] Power and current efficiency are comparable to or exceeding state-of-the-art phosphorescent OLEDs and quantum dot LEDs. Highly efficient light-emitting diodes based on intramolecular rotation

Abstract:The efficiency of an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) is fundamentally governed by the spin of recombining electron-hole pairs (singlet and triplet excitons), since triplets cannot usually emit light. The singlet-triplet energy gap, a key factor for efficient utilization of triplets, is normally positive. Here we show that in a family of materials with amide donor and carbene acceptor moieties linked by a metal, this energy gap for singlet and triplet excitons with charge-transfer character can be tuned from positive to negative values via the rotation of donor and acceptor about the metal-amide bond. When the gap is close to zero, facile intersystem crossing is possible, enabling efficient emission from singlet excitons. We demonstrate solution-processed LEDs with exceptionally high quantum efficiencies (near-100% internal and >27% external quantum efficiencies), and current and power efficiencies (87 cd/A and 75 lm/W) comparable to, or exceeding, those of state-of-the-art vacuum-processed OLEDs and quantum dot LEDs.

A Hybridized Local and Charge‐Transfer Excited State for Highly Efficient Fluorescent OLEDs: Molecular Design, Spectral Character, and Full Exciton Utilization

Abstract:For a donor–acceptor (D–A) molecule, there are three possible cases for its low‐lying excited state (S1): a π–π* state (a localized electronic state), a charge‐transfer (CT) state (a delocalized electronic state), and a mixed or hybridized state of π–π* and CT (named here as the hybridized local and charge transfer (HLCT) state). The HLCT state is an important excited state for the design of next‐generation organic light‐emitting diode (OLED) materials with both high photoluminescence (PL) efficiency and a large fraction of singlet exciton generation in electroluminescence (EL). According to the principle of state mixing in quantum chemistry, a series of twisting D–A molecules are designed and synthesized, and their HLCT state characters are verified by both fluorescent solvatochromic experiments and quantum chemical calculations. The CT components in the HLCT state, which greatly affect the molecular optical properties, are found to be enhanced with a decrease of the twist angle of the D–A segment or an increase of the D–A intensity in these twisting D–A molecules. In OLEDs, using these HLCT compounds as the emitting layer, the maximum exciton utilization efficiency is harvested up to 93%. Surprisingly, an exception of Kasha's rule is revealed in some HLCT compounds: restricted internal‐conversion (IC) from the high‐lying triplet state (T2) to the low‐lying triplet T1, and a reopened path of reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) from T2 to S1 or S2, based on the analysis of the excited‐state energy levels and the measurement of the low‐temperature spectrum. RISC from T2 to S1 (S2) as a “hot exciton” channel is believed to contribute to the large proportion of the radiative singlet excitons.
Unraveling the Important Role of High‐Lying Triplet–Lowest Excited Singlet Transitions in Achieving Highly Efficient Deep‐Blue AIE‐Based OLEDs

Abstract:Aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) materials are attractive for achieving highly efficient nondoped organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) owing to their strong luminescence in the solid state. However, the electroluminescence efficiency of most AIE‐based OLEDs remains low owing to the waste of triplet excitons. Here, using theoretical calculations, photophysical dynamics, and magnetoluminescence measurements, the spin conversion process is demonstrated between the high‐lying triplet state (Tn) and the lowest excited singlet state (S1) in AIE materials. Moreover, the relative positions of Tn (n < 4) and S1 are shown to have a significant impact on the spin‐conversion efficiency, thus influencing the harvesting of triplet excitons and the device efficiency. Finally, by selecting an upconversion material with an appropriate energy level for further utilizing the triplet excitons, a deep‐blue fluorescent OLED with CIE coordinates of (0.15, 0.08), a maximum external quantum efficiency of 10.2%, low efficiency roll‐off, and a high brightness of 16817 cd m−2 is developed. This is one of the most efficient deep‐blue OLEDs based on AIE materials reported so far. These findings also provide new insights into the design of more efficient AIE molecules and corresponding OLEDs by managing high‐lying triplet excitons.

Triplet-Polaron Interaction Induced Upconversion from Triplet to Singlet: a New Way to Obtain Highly Efficient OLEDs

Abstract:The triplet harvesting is a main challenge in organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs), due to the radiative decay of triplet is spin-forbidden. Here, we designed and synthesized two D-A type molecules, TPA-TAZ and TCP. The OLEDs based on them exhibit deep-blue emission and the singlet formation ratios are higher than the simple spin-statistics of 25 %. Specially, a TPA-TAZ-based OLED achieves a maximum EQE of 6.8 %, which is the largest value of the undoped OLEDs with CIE(y)< 0.06 (the EBU blue standard) up to date. Comprehensive experiments eliminate the triplet-harvesting processes of thermally activated delayed fluorescence and triplet-triplet annihilation. Instead, the triplet-polaron interaction induced upconversion from triplet to singlet through one-electron transfer mechanism is proposed, and proven by the magneto-current measurement and quantum chemistry computation. Our results may offer a new route to break through the 25 % upper limit of IQE of fluorescent OLEDs, especially, the deep-blue fluorescent OLEDs.

Abstract:In principle, the ratio (Φ) of the maximum quantum efficiencies for electroluminescence (EL) to photoluminescence (PL) can be expected to approach unity, if the exciton (bound electron–hole pair) generated from the recombination of injected electrons and holes in OLEDs has a sufficiently weak binding energy. However, seldom are examples of Φ > 25% reported in OLEDs because of the strongly bound excitons for most organic semiconductors in nature. Here, a twisting donor–acceptor triphenylamine‐thiadiazol molecule (TPA‐NZP) exhibits fluorescent emission through a hybridized local and charge‐transfer excited state (HLCT), which is demonstrated from both fluorescent solvatochromic experiment and quantum chemical calculations. The HLCT state possesses two combined and compatible characteristics: a large transition moment from a local excited (LE) state and a weakly bound exciton from a charge transfer (CT) state. The former contributes to a high‐efficiency radiation of fluorescence, while the latter is responsible for the generation of a high fraction of singlet excitons. Using TPA‐NZP as the light‐emitting layer in an OLED, high Φ values of 93% (at low brightness) and 50% (at high brightness) are achieved, reflecting sufficient employment of the excitons in the OLED. Characterization of the EL device shows a saturated deep‐red emission with CIE coordinates of (0.67, 0.32), accompanied by a rather excellent performance with a maximum luminance of 4574 cd m−2 and a maximum external quantum efficiency (ηext) of ∼2.8%. The HLCT state is a new way to realize high‐efficiency of EL devices.
Highly Efficient Nondoped Green Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with Combination of High Photoluminescence and High Exciton Utilization

Abstract:Photoluminescence (PL) efficiency and exciton utilization efficiency are two key parameters to harvest high-efficiency electroluminekence (EL) in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). But it is not easy to simultaneously combine these two characteristics (high PL efficiency and high exciton utilization) into a fluorescent material. In this work, an efficient combination was achieved through two concepts of hybridized local and charge-transfer (CT) state (HLCT) and "hot exciton", in which the former is responsible for high PL efficiency while the latter contributes to high exciton utilization. On the basis of a tiny chemical modification in TPA-BZP, a green-light donor-acceptor molecule, we designed and synthesized CzP-BZP with this efficeient combination: of high PL efficiency of eta(PL) = 75% in the solid state and maximal exciton utilization efficiency up to 48% (especially, the internal quantum efficiency of eta(IQE) = 35% substantially exceed 25% of spin statistics limit) in OLED. The nondoped OLED of CzP=BZP exhibited an excellent performance: a green emission with a CIE coordinate of (0.34, 0.60), a maximum current efficiency of 23.99 cd A(-1), and a maximum external quanturn efficiency (EQE, eta(EQE)) of 6.95%. This combined HLCT state and "hot exciton" strategy should be a practical way to design next-generation, tow-cost, high efficiency fluorescent OLED materials.
Kinetic Control of Recombination in Organic Photovoltaics: The Role of Spin

Abstract:In photovoltaic diodes recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes is a major loss process. Biological light harvesting complexes (LHCs) prevent recombination via the use of cascade structures, which lead to spatial separation of charge-carriers1. In contrast, the nanoscale morphology and high charge densities in organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) give a high rate of electron-hole encounters, which should result in the formation of spin triplet excitons, as in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs)2. OPVs would have poor quantum efficiencies if every encounter lead to recombination, but state-of-the-art OPVs demonstrate near-unity quantum efficiency3. Here we show that this suppression of recombination can be engineered through the interplay between spin, energetics and delocalisation of electronic excitations in organic semiconductors. We use time-resolved spectroscopy to study a series of model, high efficiency polymer-fullerene systems in which the lowest lying molecular triplet exciton (T1) (on the polymer) lies below the intermolecular charge transfer state (CT). We observe the formation of T1 states following bimolecular recombination, indicating that encounters of spin-uncorrelated electrons and holes generate CT states with both spin singlet (1CT) and spin triplet (3CT) characters. We show that triplet exciton formation can be the major loss mechanism in OPVs. However, we find that even when energetically favoured, the relaxation of 3CT to T1 can be strongly suppressed, via control over wavefunction delocalisation, allowing for the dissociation of 3CT back to free changes, thereby reducing recombination and enhancing device performance. Our results point towards new design rules for artificial photo-conversion systems, enabling the suppression of electron-hole recombination, and also for OLEDs, avoiding the formation of triplet states and enhancing fluorescence efficiency.

Modulatory Spin-Flip of Triplet Excitons via Diversiform Electron-Donating Units for MR-TADF Emitters towards Solution-Processed Narrowband OLEDs

Abstract:Multiple resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) molecules are emerging as promising candidates for high-resolution organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays, but MR-TADF emitters always suffer from dissatisfactory rate constant of reverse intersystem crossing (kRISC) due to inherently low spin orbital coupling strength between excited singlet and triplet states. Herein, we systematically investigate the long-range charge transfer (LRCT) and heavy-atom effects on modulating the excited state natures and energy levels via integrating diversiform electron-donating units with the MR skeleton. Compared with unsubstituted analogue, newly designed MR-TADF emitters exhibit significantly boosted kRISC values and close-to-unity photoluminescence quantum yield especially for tBuBNCz-PXZ (2.5×105 s-1) and tBuBNCz-Ph-PSeZ (2.1×105 s-1). Leveraging these exceptional properties, the maximum external quantum efficiency values of tBuBNCz-PXZ and tBuBNCz-Ph-PSeZ based solution-processed OLEDs can reach 21.3% and 19.4%, which are in the first tier of reported solution-processed MR-TADF binary OLEDs without employing additional sensitizer. This study provide a framework for modulating photoelectrical properties of MR-TADF emitters through fastidiously regulating LRCT and heavy-atom effects.

Efficient Spin-Flip between Charge-Transfer States for High-Performance Electroluminescence, without an Intermediate Locally Excited State

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials with both high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and fast reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) are strongly desired to realize efficient and stable organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Control of excited-state dynamics via molecular design plays a central role in optimizing the PLQY and RISC rate of TADF materials but remains challenging. Here, 3 TADF emitters possessing similar molecular structures, similar high PLQYs (89.5% to 96.3%), and approximate energy levels of the lowest excited singlet states (S 1 ), but significantly different spin-flipping RISC rates (0.03 × 10 6 s −1 vs. 2.26 × 10 6 s −1 ) and exciton lifetime (297.1 to 332.8 μs vs. 6.0 μs) were systematically synthesized to deeply investigate the feasibility of spin-flip between charge-transfer excited states ( 3 CT– 1 CT) transition. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the small singlet–triplet energy gap together with low RISC reorganization energy between the 3 CT and 1 CT states could provide an efficient RISC through fast spin-flip 3 CT– 1 CT transition, without the participation of an intermediate locally excited state, which has previously been recognized as being necessary for realizing fast RISC. Finally, the OLED based on the champion TADF emitter achieves a maximum external quantum efficiency of 27.1%, a tiny efficiency roll-off of 4.1% at 1,000 cd/m 2 , and a high luminance of 28,150 cd/m 2 , which are markedly superior to those of the OLEDs employing the other 2 TADF emitters.

Long-Lived Spin-Polarized Intermolecular Exciplex States in Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence-Based Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Spin-spin interactions in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) are pivotal because radiative recombination is largely determined by triplet-to-singlet conversion, also called reverse intersystem crossing (RISC). To explore the underlying process, we apply a spin-resonance spectral hole-burning technique to probe electroluminescence. We find that the triplet exciplex states in OLEDs are highly spin-polarized and show that these states can be decoupled from the heterogeneous nuclear environment as a source of spin dephasing and can even be coherently manipulated on a spin-spin relaxation time scale T2* of 30 ns. Crucially, we obtain the characteristic triplet exciplex spin-lattice relaxation time T1 in the range of 50 us, which far exceeds the RISC time. We conclude that slow spin relaxation rather than RISC is an efficiency-limiting step for intermolecular donor:acceptor systems. Finding TADF emitters with faster spin relaxation will benefit this type of TADF OLEDs.

Abstract:In organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), the pursuit of efficient molecular emitters has led to the development of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules. While TADF compounds have promising properties, they face challenges such as energy gap constraints and uphill exciton transfer. Inverted emitters (INVEST) offer a novel solution with an inverted singlet-triplet energy (ΔEST) gap, enabling efficient utilization of excitons. This study examines the design and computational analysis of an array of molecules, including 23 INVEST emitters and remaining with positive energy gaps. Within the STEOM-DLPNO-CCSD framework, we explore the role of various molecular fragments in determining ΔEST. We also assess the importance of dynamic spin-polarization (DSP) obtained via the Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) scheme in energy gap determination. Exciting trends emerged from our results, with pentalene-containing compounds consistently manifesting negative ΔEST values while their naphthalene counterparts exhibited contrasting behavior. Moreover, we observed a negative DSP correlates with inverted singlet-triplet gaps. Overall, this research advances OLED materials through molecular design and computational analysis, offering avenues for optimizing exciton management and enhancing device performance.

Abstract:Hot exciton materials have the potential to improve the quantum efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) by promoting high reversed intersystem crossing (hRISC) between a high-lying triplet (T-n, n >= 2) and a radiative singlet (S-m). In recent years, donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) molecular systems have shown great promise in its ability to enhance the hRISC process under certain conditions. However, strategies to find appropriate D-A-D combinations beyond trial-and-error are still elusive. This work exposes the limited applicability of the current fragment-based design rules and proposes high-throughput screening as the optimal route to find candidates that fulfill the energy criteria for hRISC. The strategy consists of first establishing the thresholds for large triplet-triplet splitting and small singlet-triplet gap, then filtering combinations through rate comparison of competitive crossing pathways, and finally confirming hRISC with spin-orbital coupling evaluation. Based on a dataset of 234 compounds, this protocol identifies 31 candidates with potential for hRISC, 4 of which are reported in the literature. Remarkably, while most of the promising systems show prominent hybridized local and charge transfer character, several candidates do not fulfill this condition, indicating that different routes are possible to design efficient OLED materials.

Abstract:The development of luminescent organic radicals has resulted in materials with excellent optical properties for near-infrared (NIR) emission. Applications of light generation in this range span from bioimaging to surveillance. Whilst the unpaired electron arrangements of radicals enable efficient radiative transitions within the doublet-spin manifold in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), their performance is limited by non-radiative pathways introduced in electroluminescence. Here, we present a host:guest design for OLEDs that exploits energy transfer with demonstration of up to 9.6% external quantum efficiency (EQE) for 800 nm emission. The tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl-triphenylamine (TTM-TPA) radical guest is energy-matched to the triplet state in a charge-transporting anthracene-derivative host. We show from optical spectroscopy and quantum-chemical modelling that reversible host-guest triplet-doublet energy transfer allows efficient harvesting of host triplet excitons.

Abstract:Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have redefined lighting with their environment-friendliness and flexibility. However, only 25 % of the electronic states of organic molecules can emit light upon electrical excitation, limiting the overall efficiency of OLEDs. Strong light-matter coupling, achieved by confining light within OLEDs using mirrors, creates hybrid light-matter states known as polaritons, which could "activate" the remaining 75 % electronic triplet states. Here, we study triplet-to-polariton transition and derive rates for both reverse inter-system crossing and triplet-triplet annihilation. In addition, we explore how the harmful singlet-singlet annihilation could be reduced with strong coupling.

Abstract:Luminescent materials possessing a "hot exciton" mechanism and AIE qualities are well‐suited for use as emitting materials in non‐doped organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs), particularly in deep‐red regions where their ground state and singlet excited state surfaces are in proximity, leading to the formation of multiple non‐radiative channels. However, designing molecules that artificially combine the hot exciton mechanism and AIE attributes remains a formidable task. In this study, we present a versatile strategy to achieve hot exciton fluorescence with AIE property by increasing the first singlet excited (S1) state through modulation of the conjugation length of the newly created acceptor unit, matching the energy level of high‐lying triplet (Tn) states, and enhancing exciton utilization efficiency by employing suitable donor moieties. This approach reduces the aggregation‐caused quenching (ACQ) in the aggregate state, resulting in the proof‐of‐concept emitter DT‐IPD, which produces an unprecedented external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 12.2% and CIE coordinates of (0.69, 0.30) in a deep‐red non‐doped OLED at 685 nm, representing the highest performance among all deep‐red OLEDs based on materials with hot exciton mechanisms.
