Abstract:Objective: To investigate the relationship between plasma leptin levels and obesity, plasma glucose concentration as well as insulin concentration. Methods: Fasting plasma leptin concentrations were measured with immunoradiometric assay(IRMA) in 171 cases (90 men, 81 women), oral glucose tolerance test was done in every case to measure plasma glucose and insulin concentrations. Height, body weight were measured to calculate body mass index (BMI). Results: Fasting plasma leptin levels are correlated with BMI( r =0.6772, P 0.01 in male and r =0.7191, P 0.01 in female), leptin levels are 2-3 times in female than in male, the difference is significant ( P 0.001). The stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that leptin variations are positively correlated with insulin curve areas. Conclusion: Fasting plasma leptin levels are higher in obese subjects than that in non obese ones. The correlation between hyperleptinemia and hyperinsulinemia suggests a possible role of leptin in genesis of type 2 diabetes.
Circulating Acyl and Des-Acyl Ghrelin Levels in Obese Adults: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Ghrelin is the only known orexigenic gut hormone, and its synthesis, secretion and degradation are affected by different metabolic statuses. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the potential differences in plasma acyl ghrelin (AG) and des-acyl ghrelin (DAG) concentrations between normal weight and obese adults. Systematic literature searches of PubMed, Embase and Web of Science through October 2021 were conducted for articles reporting AG or DAG levels in obesity and normal weight, and 34 studies with 1863 participants who met the eligibility criteria were identified. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to evaluate group differences in circulating AG and DAG levels. Pooled effect size showed significantly lower levels of baseline AG (SMD: − 0.85; 95% CI: − 1.13 to − 0.57; P SMD < 0.001) and DAG (SMD: − 1.06; 95% CI: − 1.43 to − 0.69; P SMD < 0.001) in obese groups compared with healthy controls, and similar results were observed when subgroup analyses were stratified by the assay technique or storage procedure. Postprandial AG levels in obese subjects were significantly lower than those in controls when stratified by different time points (SMD 30 min : − 0.85, 95% CI: − 1.18 to − 0.53, P SMD < 0.001; SMD 60 min : − 1.00, 95% CI: − 1.37 to − 0.63, P SMD < 0.001; SMD 120 min : − 1.21, 95% CI: − 1.59 to − 0.83, P SMD < 0.001). In healthy subjects, a postprandial decline in AG was observed at 120 min (SMD: − 0.42; 95% CI: − 0.77 to − 0.06; P SMD = 0.021) but not in obese subjects (SMD: − 0.28; 95% CI: − 0.60 to 0.03; P SMD = 0.074). The mean change in AG concentration was similar in both the obese and lean health groups at each time point (ΔSMD 30min : 0.31, 95% CI: − 0.35 to 0.97, P SMD = 0.359; ΔSMD 60min : 0.17, 95% CI: − 0.12 to 0.46, P SMD = 0.246; ΔSMD 120min : 0.21, 95% CI: − 0.13 to 0.54, P SMD = 0.224). This meta-analysis strengthens the clinical evidence supporting the following: lower baseline levels of circulating AG and DAG in obese individuals; declines in postprandial circulating AG levels, both for the healthy and obese individuals; a shorter duration of AG suppression in obese subjects after meal intake. These conclusions have significance for follow-up studies to elucidate the role of various ghrelin forms in energy homeostasis.

Abstract:Objective To measure serum leptin, free fatty acid (FFA) and adiponectin levels and to analyse relationships among them in obese subjects. Methods Sixty-three overweight or obese subjects (body mass index (BMI) 25 kg/m2] and 20 normal lean controls all took oral 75 g glucose tolerance test and frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test ( FSIVGTT). According to their plasma glucose level, the obese subjects were divided into simple obesity group (n=38) and diabetic obesity group (n= 25). Fasting leptin, FFA and adiponectin concentrations were measured at the same time in all subjects. The relationships among these factors were analyzed by SPSS 10.0 software. Results The serum leptin and FFA levels in obese subjects were significantly higher than those of normal controls, while serum adiponectin level was significantly lower in obese subjects than that of normal controls. (Leptin: simple obesity (15.55±1.87)μg/L, diabetic obesity (13.41±5.07)μg/L vs' normal control ( 2.83±0.70)μg/L, both P 0.001;FFA:simple obesity (670.5±239.8) μmol/L,diabetic obesity (780.8±381.7) μmol/L vs normal control (393.2±152.1) μmnol/L, P0.001 and P0.01; Adiponectin: simple obesity (9.11±2.16) mg/L, diabetes obesity (4.25±1.59) mg/L vs normal control (12.14±3.57) mg/L, P 0.01 and P0.001]. Further analysis revealed that adiponectin, fasting insulin, FFA levels and waist hip ratio contributed to the degree of insulin resistance. ( Multivariate regression function r2=0. 28, P0.001).Conclusion Serum leptin and FFA levels in obese subjects are much higher than those of normal control, while serum adiponectin level is lower. Adiponectin, fasting insulin, FFA and WHR are good indexes in evaluating the insulin resistance syndrome.
The Relationship Between Serum Leptin Concentration and Adiposity in Chinese

Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship between serum leptin concentration and body fat, gender, age and testosterone in Chinese. Methods The serum leptin concentrations were measured in 77 lean and 28 overweight or obese body mass index (BMI)≥25 subjects by RIA. Results The serum leptin concentrations in lean Chinese were (2.15±1.46)μg/L in male and (7.86±3.60)μg/L in female, while in overweight or obese ones they were (4.87±3.47)μg/L in male and (16.59±6.92)μg/L in female, which were 2～3 times higher in women than in men. In both men and women, in spite of a relative deficiency of leptin in 25% of obese persons, fastleptinlevelsweresignificantlycorrelatedwith BMI (r=0.69, P0.001 in male and r=0.63, P0.001 in female). Conclusion Serum leptin concentrations are correlated with BMI, suggesting that most obese persons are resistant to leptin. Those who are relatively deficient of leptin may become the good candidates for leptin treatment in the future.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the relationship between serum concentrations of leptin or adiponectin, and endometrial carcinoma in Chinese women.Methods: We conducted a case-control study of a total of 516 Chinese women to detect the relationships between serum concentrations of leptin or adiponectin, and endometrial carcinoma in Chinese women. The study subject constituted 206 cases of endometrial cancer and 310 normal controls.Results: Patients with endometrial carcinoma had higher serum leptin concentrations than controls (28.8 +/- 2.2 ug/L vs. 19.8 +/- 1.4 ug/L; p<0.001). The adipbnectin levels in patients were lower than in controls with borderline statistical significance (2,330.7 +/- 180.5 ug/L vs. 2,583.9 +/- 147.2 ug/L; p=0.078). Logistic regression analysis confirmed the associations between leptin or adiponectin, and endometrial carcinoma after adjustment for age, body mass index, fasting insulin, serum glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (odds ratio for the top tertile vs. the bottom tertile: leptin 2.05; 95% confidence interval [Cl], 1.28 to 3.29; p<0.001; adiponectin 0.52; 95% Cl, 0.32 to 0.83; p<0.001).Conclusion: Increased leptin or decreased adiponectin levels are associated with endometrial carcinoma.
Relationship between peripheral leptin receptor and leptin in obese subjects

Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship between leptin resistance and leptin receptor in obese subjects.Methods Forty-four individuals undergoing surgery, exclusive of diabetic mellitus, chronic inflammatory and malignant diseases, were divided into 3 groups according to the body mass index (BMI), normal controls (n= 15), weight excess (n = 14), and obesity group (n= 15). Fasting serum leptin were detected via ELISA kits, leptin receptor (Bmax) in periph eral adipose tissues was detected by radioligand assay. Results Serum leptin levels were higher significantly in weight ex-cess and obesity cases groups (10. 3±4.45 and 13.2±3.26 vs 5.51±3.23μg/L, both P＜0. 05, respectively) compared with normal control group, suggesting the existence of leptin resistance, while the leptin receptor of the weight excess and obese groups decreased significantly than that of normal control group (36.9±5.89 and 25.3±3.95 vs 76.5±35.3 fmol /mg protein, both P＜0.01, respectively), there was no statistical differences for Kd value among three groups. Also,there was a negative correlation between BMI and leptin receptor (r=-0. 613, P＜0. 05), and no significant correlation was found between serum leptin and peripheral leptin receptor. Conclusion The result suggested that there was expression of leptin receptor in peripheral adipose tissues and low level of leptin receptor expression may contribute to the develop ment of leptin resistance and obesity.
[The Changes in Plasma Leptin, Insulin and Proinsulin Levels in Obese Adolescents].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the metabolic changes in obese adolescents and the relationship between obese adolescents and metabolic syndrome.METHODS:198 obese adolescents [body mass index (BMI) >/= 25 kg/m(2)] and 78 normal adolescents (BMI 18.5 approximately 23.0 kg/m(2)) were chosen from 2 217 middle school students of 14 approximately 16 years. The levels of serum leptin, insulin, proinsulin, glucose and lipids of these adolescents were measured and compared.RESULTS:(1) There was significant gender difference of serum leptin levels in adolescents of 14 approximately 16 years. The level of serum leptin was higher in female than that in male [(18.53 +/- 1.41) microgram/L vs (6.33 +/- 1.79) microgram/L]. (2) The levels of serum leptin, insulin and proinsulin of obese adolescents were significantly higher than those of normal adolescents [(19.94 +/- 1.91) microgram/L vs (11.27 +/- 2.04) microgram/L, (15.34 +/- 1.66) microIU/L vs (13.17 +/- 1.43) microIU/L and (16.19 +/- 1.64) pmol/L vs (11.79 +/- 1.70) pmol/L respectively]. (3) The levels of blood glucose and triglyceride of obese adolescents were significantly higher than those of normal adolescents [(4.63 +/- 0.50) mmol/L vs (4.13 +/- 0.33) mmol/L and (1.20 +/- 0.56) mmol/L vs (0.90 +/- 0.32) mmol/L respectively], but the levels of serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) of obese adolescents were significantly lower than those of normal adolescents [(1.14 +/- 0.24) mmol/L vs (1.38 +/- 0.26) mmol/L].CONCLUSION:It is suggested that there are leptin resistance, insulin resistance and potential disorders of blood glucose and lipid metabolism in obese adolescents. Our study indicated that adolescent obesity would be related with early occurrence of type 2 diabetes.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Observational studies have reported inconsistent results on the association between circulating fatty acids and obesity. OBJECTIVE:The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between erythrocyte phospholipid fatty acid composition and obesity in children and adolescents. METHODS:We conducted a case-control study including 1442 obese and 1442 normal-weight children and adolescents. Circulating fatty acid composition between cases and controls were compared both in the present study and literature-based meta-analysis. Individual fatty acids contributing most to discriminating cases and controls were identified by orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis and their associations with obesity were explored by a conditional logistic regression model. RESULTS:Five saturated fatty acids (14:0, 16:0, 17:0, 18:0, 20:0) were higher, 9 polyunsaturated fatty acids (18:3n-3, 20:3n-3, 20:5n-3, 22:5n-3, 22:6n-3, 18:2n-6, 20:2n-6, 20:3n-6, 20:4n-6) were lower in cases than in controls, while pooled results from the comparative meta-analysis were only consistent in 22:5n-3, 22:6n-3 and 18:2n-6. The orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis model indicated that 16:0, 18:0, 20:4n-6, and 22:6n-3 were the fatty acids contributing most to discriminating cases and controls. In the conditional logistic regression model, significant positive associations were found for 16:0 (per 1 SD OR = 1.43, 95% CI, 1.35-1.52) and 18:0 (per 1 SD OR = 1.12, 95% CI, 1.09-1.16), while significant inverse associations were found for 20:4n-6 (per 1 SD OR = 0.63, 95% CI, 0.58-0.69) and 22:6n-3 (per 1 SD OR = 0.56, 95% CI, 0.52-0.61). CONCLUSIONS:Erythrocyte phospholipid 16:0 and 18:0 were positively and 20:4n-6 and 22:6n-3 were inversely associated with obesity in children and adolescents.
[Blood leptin, orexins and NPY levels and their relations in obese children]

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the concentration levels of leptin, orexins and neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the blood of obese children, and to analysed the relationship between these substances. Methods: RIA methods were used to measure the concentrations of leptin, orexinA, orexinB, and NPY in the blood of 98 obese children [BMI: male (29.24 +/- 1.87) kg/mZ, female (28.12 +/- 2.30) kg/m2] and in 104 normal children [BMI: male (20.49 +/- 1.95) kg/m2, female (19.59 +/- 1.51) kg/m2] as the control group. Results: The leptin concentrations in obese children [male (26.00 +/- 14.66) ng/mL; female (33.59 +/- 14.63) ng/mL] were higher than those in the control group [male (6.65 +/- 44.49) ng/mL; female [10.48 +/- 5.52) ng/mL P < 0.013]. The concentrations of plasma orexinA in obes children [male (3.23 +/- 1.86) pg/mL; female (3.38 +/- 1.80) pg/mL] were lower than those in the control group [male (4.52 +/- 1.52) pg/mL; female (4.71 +/- 1.53) pg/mL P < 0.05]; Negative correlations between leptin and NPY were noted in the obesity group (r = -0.302) and the control group (r = -0.310, P < 0.01), while the slopes in the two groups were different (control group -2.969; obese group -0.809). A positive correlation between NPY and orexinA was noted (r = 0.207, P < 0.05). The fluctuation range of orexinA in obese children was markedly narrowed when compared with that in the control group. Conclusion: The concentration level of peripheral orexinA and leptin in the obese and non-obese children change inversely. The obesity in children correlates with the concentrations of orexinA, leptin, NPY as well as with their interactions.
Serum Leptin Levels and Adiposity in Adult Chinese: a Preliminary Observation.

Abstract:To establish normal serum leptin levels in Chinese and investigate the relationship between serum leptin levels and body fat, gender, age and androgen.Serum leptin levels were measured in 77 lean (BMI < 25) and 28 overweight or obese (BMI > or = 25) subjects by a radioimmunoassay (RIA) method.The serum leptin levels in lean Chinese were 2.15 +/- 1.46 ng/ml in male and 7.85 +/- 3.60 ng/ml in female, which are similar to those of Caucasians, while in overweight or obese ones, the levels were 4.87 +/- 3.47 ng/ml and 16.59 +/- 6.92 ng/ml respectively, lower than those in Caucasians. A 2-3 times higher leptin concentrations were found in women than in men in both conditions. Even when the number of lean males was expanded to 79 subjects aged from 17-80 years, no significant leptin-age relationship was found. Despite 25% of obese subjects manifested a relative deficiency of leptin, as a whole, leptin levels in both men and women were significantly correlated with BMI (r = 0.69, P < 0.001 in male and r = 0.63, P < 0.001 in female).Serum leptin levels in Chinese lean people are similar to those in Caucasians and in both lean and obese groups, the leptin levels are correlated with BMI, suggesting that the great majority of the obese patients are resistant to endogenous leptin. Those who are relatively deficient of leptin may become a group of good candidates for leptin treatment in the future.
The metabolic significance of leptin in humans: gender-based differences in relationship to adiposity, insulin sensitivity, and energy expenditure.

Abstract:Leptin is an adipocyte-derived hormone that interacts with a putative receptor(s) in the hypothalamus to regulate body weight. The relationship of leptin to metabolic abnormalities associated with obesity together with hormonal and substrate regulation of leptin have not been extensively studied. Therefore, 116 subjects (62 men and 54 women) with a wide range of body weight [body mass index (BMI), 17-54 kg/m2] were characterized on a metabolic ward with regard to body composition, glucose intolerance, insulin sensitivity, energy expenditure, substrate utilization, and blood pressure. Eighty-five of the subjects had normal glucose tolerance (50 men and 35 women), and 31 had noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (12 men and 19 women). In both men and women, fasting leptin levels were highly correlated with BMI (r = 0.87 and r = 0.88, respectively) and percent body fat (r = 0.82 and r = 0.88, respectively; all P < 0.0001). However, men exhibited lower leptin levels at any given measure of obesity. Compared with those in men, leptin levels rose 3.4-fold more rapidly as a function of BMI in women [leptin = 1.815 (BMI)-31.103 in women; leptin = 0.534 (BMI)-8.437 in men] and 3.2 times more rapidly as a function of body fat [leptin = 1.293 (% body fat)-24.817 in women; leptin = 0.402 (% body fat)-3.087 in men]. Hyperleptinemia was associated with insulin resistance (r = -0.57; P < 0.0001) and high waist to hip ratio (r = 0.75; P < 0.0001) only in men. On the other hand, during the hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp studies, hyperinsulinemia acutely increased leptin concentrations (20%) only in women. There was no correlation noted between fasting leptin levels and either resting energy expenditure or insulin-induced thermogenesis in men or women (P = NS). In stepwise and multiple regression models with leptin as the dependent variable, noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus did not enter the equations at a statistically significant level. The data indicate that there are important gender-based differences in the regulation and action of leptin in humans. Serum leptin levels increase with progressive obesity in both men and women. However, for any given measure of obesity, leptin levels are higher in women than in men, consistent with a state of relative leptin resistance. These findings have important implications regarding differences in body composition in men and women. The observation that serum leptin is not related to energy expenditure rates suggests that leptin regulates body fat predominantly by altering eating behavior rather than calorigenesis.

Abstract:Leptin, the gene product of the obese gene, may play an important role in regulating body weight by signalling the size of the adipose tissue mass. Plasma leptin was found to be highly correlated with body mass index (BMI) in rodents and in 87 lean and obese humans. In humans, there was variability in plasma leptin at each BMI suggesting that there are differences in its secretion rate from fat. Weight loss due to food restriction was associated with a decrease in plasma leptin in samples from mice and obese humans.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationships between serum adiponectin concentration and age, gender, body fat, and serum leptin concentration in Shanghai. Methods The serum adiponectin concentration was measured in 104 normal subjects [body mass index (BMI) 25kg/m2 ] and 57 overweight or obese subjects (BMI≥25 kg/m2) by RIA. Results The serum adiponectin concentrations of normal subjects were (10.15±6.33) mg/L in male and ( 13.82±6.09) mg/L in female,and those of overweight or obese ones were (5.78±3.55 ) mg/L in male and (8.13±4.32 ) mg/L in female. In both men and women, the fasting adiponectin levels in overweight or obese subjects were lower than those of the normal ones, and serum adiponectin concentration was significantly negatively correlated with BMI, % body fat, waist circumference and leptin concentration. But adiponectin was not significantly correlated with leptin concentration after the adjustment of body fat. Adiponectin was also not significantly correlated with age. Conclusion Adiponectin, a hormone secreted by adipocytes, may be intimately related to obesity and insulin resistance. Therefore, any treatment which increases adiponectin seems to be heneficial.

The leptin is one of the adipokines which presents in the serum in proportion to the amount of adipose tissue and is translated from LEP gene. It involves in energy homeostasis, lipid and glucose metabolisms, modulation of immune systems, and thermogenesis. Many previous studies have revealed controversial results between LEP polymorphisms and leptin levels in different ages and ethnicities. Herein, we investigated the impacts of LEP polymorphism against leptin levels in Taiwanese subjects. Methods In 599 Taiwanese subjects, excluding clinically overt systemic disease, age below 18 years old, and C‐reactive protein (CRP) level of above 10 mg/L, few of LEP polymorphisms were genotyped with TaqMan SNP genotyping assays, were further analyzed for association with leptin level in univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses with Bonferroni correction for multiple tests in stratified groups. The univariate and stepwise multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to determine the coefficient of determinant of LEP polymorphisms over leptin level. Results Significant associations were found between LEP polymorphisms and leptin levels in obese women. Circulating leptin level was positively correlated with inflammatory, insulin resistance markers, and visceral obesity markers in all subjects. Furthermore, stratified and interaction analyses revealed that LEP polymorphisms, rs7799039 and rs2167270, were significantly associated with leptin levels in obese women—8%–10% of which could be explained by LEP polymorphisms. Conclusion The LEP polymorphisms are independently associated with leptin levels in Taiwanese obese women. Further, the genetic determinants for leptin levels may be different between obese and nonobese, and in different sex individuals. The obesity status and female sex may exert modification effect on transcription of LEP, particularly in obese women.
Association between dietary essential amino acids intake and metabolic biomarkers: influence of obesity among Chinese children and adolescents

Abstract:Essential amino acids (EAAs) are involved in growth and development in children and adolescents. This study was aimed at exploring the relationship between dietary EAA intakes and metabolic biomarker, and the influence of obesity in children and adolescents. A total of 3566 subjects were analysed. Participators were classified according to weight status. Metabolic biomarkers were determined using standardized methods and conditions. Normal, overweight, and obesity statuses were defined according to the Working Group on Obesity in China (WGOC) BMI cutoff points based on age- and sex-specific screening criteria. In normal-weight group, blood uric acid was negatively correlated with dietary Ile, Leu, Lys, Phe, Thr, Val, and His, and zinc was negatively correlated with Ile, Leu, Lys, Phe, Thr, Val, His, Met, and Trp. In overweight group, TC was negatively correlated with Ile, Leu, Phe, Val, and His, and LDL-C was negatively correlated with Ile, Leu, Lys, Phe, Thr, Val, His, and Met, while TG was positively correlated with Leu, Lys, Phe, Thr, Val, and Met. In obesity group, hemoglobin was positively related to Ile, Leu, Lys, Phe, Thr, Val, His, and Trp, while vitamin D was positively correlated with His and Trp. The serum creatinine was negatively correlated with Ile, Leu, Phe, Val, His, and Met in normal-weight group, and positively correlated with Ile, Leu, Lys, Phe, Thr, Val, His, Met, Trp, His, and Trp in obesity group. Dietary amino acid score (AAS) and Leu intake were protective factors for obesity. The association between fasting blood glucose and EAAs intake was weak and labile. Metabolic biomarkers and EAA intakes were only related under certain weight status. The dietary AAS is positively correlated with HDL-C, LDL-C, serum creatinine, albumin, serum vitamin D, and zinc. The subtle relationship of EAAs and kidney function should be explored further. There is a complex relationship between EAAs and metabolic biomarkers, and overweight and obesity have a certain influence on this relationship.

The relationship between leptin resistance and insulin resistance in men with obesity

Abstract:Objective To probe into the relationship between leptin resistance and insulin resistance in men with obesity.Methods Fasting leptin and insulin levels were measured with RIA,and oral glucose tolerance test was carried out in every case to measure serum glucose concentration with glucose oxidase in 35 men with obesity and 30 control subjects,meanwhile,height,body weight were measured to calculate body mass index(BMI).Results Fasting serum leptin and insulin were higher in obese men than those in normal subjects(both P0.01),and fasting blood glucose was no various change.Two variable correlation analysis showed that leptin level were positively correlated with insulin level in obese group(r=0.575,P0.01).Conclusion LR(leptin resistance) and IR(insulin resistance) exist in obese men,and LR is positively correlated with IR.

Abstract:Objective: To investigae the relationship between plasma leptin levels and obesity, plasma glucose, lipid as well as insulin concentration. Methods: 194 students aged from 12 -18 were selected. The assessments included serum leptin and lipid concentration, a 75 g OGTT and insulin releasing test. Blood leptin, glucose, insulin and the blood lipids were measured. Results: As compared with the control group, serum leptin, Fins (fasting insulin), Pins2h (2-hour postprandial insulin) and insulin resistance index (IR) in the obesity group were highly elevated and statistically distinguished by the t-test (P<0.05). Serum leptin levels were positively correlated with Fins, Pins2h and IR. Conclusion: Serum leptin levels in juvenile obesity is high. The correlation between hyperleptinemia and hyperinsulinemia suggests a possible role for leptin in obesity-related insulin resistance pathogenesis.
Correlation of Adiponectin and Leptin with Anthropometrics and Behavioral and Physical Performance in Overweight and Obese Chinese College Students

Abstract:The aim of this study is to assess the relationship of leptin (LEP) and adiponectin (ADPN) with other circulating fat markers, physical capacity, behaviors, and anthropometric indices in a population of overweight and obese Chinese university students. LEP and ADPN levels, as well as behavioral, anthropometric, biochemical, and performance characteristics, were measured. Method: A total of 17 anthropometric parameters, 8 questionnaires (investigating quality of life, sleep, eating, perceived functioning, stress, and depression), 9 biochemical parameters, and 12 functional parameters were investigated. Results: In contrast to previous studies, our work found an unusually strong relationship between LEP and ADPN (r = 0.961, p = 0.000) that can be related to ethnicity. We also found that LEP and ADPN were associated with stress and bodily pain. A total of 12 anthropometric measures were also associated with LEP/ADNP levels. Moreover, LEP and ADPN were found to be related to lower limb, hand, and abdominal strength; blood pressure; and basic metabolism. However, we did not find associations with sleep; eating habits; or cardiovascular fitness, which was measured in the form of resting heart rate and VO2max. Conclusion: This study reveals new relationships of LEP and ADPN with selected anthropometric and behavioral parameters in obese Chinese college students.
Level of Plasma Adiponectin and Its Clinical Significance in Children with Obesity

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the change of plasma adiponectin(ADPN) level and the relation with obesity and to explore its clinical significance in children obesity. Methods: A total of 265 children were randomly divided into obese group (n =147) and non-obese group (n=118). All subjects received the determination of waist circumference(WC), hip circumference, percentage of body fat (%BF), triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), fasting insulin (FINS), ADPN levels. Homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and waist to hip ratio (WHR) were also calculated. The correlations between the levels of plasma ADPN and the parameters of body mass and glucolipid metabolism were analyzed as well. Results: Compared with non-obese children, the Plasma adiponectin levels significantly decreased in obese children (P0.05), and had a negative correlation with the levels of %BF, BMI, WHR and HOMA-IR, FINS and TG (P0.05). Multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that %BF, BMI, HOMA-IR, FINS were the main risk factors for ADPN. Conclusion: The decrease of plasma ADPN level was significantly correlated with %BF and insulin resistance in obese children.
