Abstract:This chapter summarizes the state-of-the-art self-assembly strategies that have been developed to build a variety of graphene-based nanostructures as well as macroscopic architectures including fibers, thin films, and porous networks. Accordingly, a variety of graphene-based hierarchical nanostructures and functional hybrid nanostructures have been produced via the self-assembly of chemically modified graphene (CMG) building blocks. Graphene-based nanostructures with the versatility of their self-assembly behavior are capable of obtaining desirable nanocomposites and macroscopic architectures aiming for special functions and applications. The chapter also highlights several representative examples of the self-assembled graphene nanostructures applied in optics/electronics, energy storage, and catalysis to partially indicate the direction of this research area. Self-assembly of graphene into monolithic macroscopic superstructures with three-dimensional (3D) networks can largely translate the admirable properties of individual graphene into the resulting macrostructures, thus enabling applications that require high-conductivity, large-surface-area, and self-standing structures.
