Abstract:Let F be a quadratic number field. We give a criterion, via Hilbert symbols, for an element of order two in the tame kernel of F to be a fourth power in the tame kernel of F. The result can be applied to compute the 8-rank of the tame kernel of F and the Tate kernel of an imaginary quadratic number field. We list the 8-ranks of K2OF for all quadratic number fields whose discriminants have exactly two odd prime divisors. In the case when F is an imaginary quadratic number field with the 8-rank of K2OF=0, the Tate kernel of F is given too. An application of our method to the maximal real subfield of a cyclotomic field is discussed. Numerical examples, in particular the examples of quadratic number fields F with 4-rank of K2OF= 8-rank of K2OF=2 illustrate our results.

Abstract:Let F he an imaginary quadratic number field and K2OF the tame kernel of F. In this article, we determine all possible values of r(4)(K2OF) for each type of imaginary quadratic number field F. In particular, for each type of imaginary quadratic number field we give the maximum possible value of r(4)(K2OF) and show that each integer between the lower and upper bounds occurs as a value of the 4-rank of K2OF for infinitely many imaginary quadratic number fields F.

Abstract:Let $F = Q\left( {\sqrt p } \right)$, where p = 8t+1 is a prime. In this paper, we prove that a special case of Qin’s conjecture on the possible structure of the 2-primary part of K 2 O F up to 8-rank is a consequence of a conjecture of Cohen and Lagarias on the existence of governing fields. We also characterize the 16-rank of K 2 O F , which is either 0 or 1, in terms of a certain equation between 2-adic Hilbert symbols being satisfied or not.

This paper is mainly to give the formula: 8-rank of K2OF=8-rank of C(E)+a(F)+σ, where C(E) is the narrow class group of E, a(F)∈{−1,0,1} and σ∈{0,1}; moreover |8-rank of K2OF-8-rank of C(E)|⩽1. This paper is also to show the relations among {−1,u+d}∈K2OF4, the dyadic ideal class of C(E) and the dyadic ideal class of C(E′) for E′=Q(−2d).

Abstract:Let F be a cubic cyclic field with exactly one ramified prime p,p>7, or F=Q(d), a real quadratic field with d≢6(mod9). In this paper, we study the 3-primary part of K2OF. If 3 does not divide the class number of F, we get some results about the 9-rank of K2OF. In particular, in the case of a cubic cyclic field F with only one ramified prime p>7, we prove that four conclusions concerning the 3-primary part of K2OF, obtained by J. Browkin by numerical computations for primes p, 7≤p≤5000, are true in general.

Abstract:Let F be a totally real number field with degree n = [F: Q] >= 3. Mazur and Urbanowicz proved that ifK2OF similar or equal to (Z/2Z)([F:Q]) (*)and F is not Q(zeta(7) +zeta(-1)(7)) or Q(zeta(9) + zeta(-1)(9)), then F must be one of the 14 cases listed in Mazur and Urbanowicz (1992). In this article, it is proved that 3 of these 14 cases don't satisfy (*), while all the other cases satisfy (*). Hence we find all totally real number fields which satisfy (*).

Abstract:Caraiani and Newton have proven that if $F$ is an imaginary quadratic number field such that $X_0(15)$ has rank $0$ over $F$, then every elliptic curve over $F$ is modular. This paper is concerned with the quadratic fields $F=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p})$ for a prime number $p$. We give explicit conditions on $p$ under which the rank is $0$, and prove that these conditions are satisfied for $87,5\%$ of the primes for which the rank is expected to be even based on the parity conjecture. We also show these conditions are satisfied if and only if rank $0$ follows from a $4$-descent over $\mathbb{Q}$ on the quadratic twist $X_0(15)_{-p}$. To prove this, we perform two consecutive $2$-descents and prove this gives rank bounds equivalent to those obtained from a $4$-descent using visualisation techniques for $\mathrm{Sha}[2]$. In fact we prove a more general connection between higher descents for elliptic curves which seems interesting in its own right.

Abstract:The theory of continued fractions of functions $ \sqrt D $ is used to give lower bound for class numbers $h(D)$ of general real quadratic function fields $K=k(\sqrt D)$ over $k={\bf F}_q(T)$. Rank growth of elliptic curves in $S_4$ and $A_4$ quartic extensions of the rationals

Abstract:We investigate the rank growth of elliptic curves from $\mathbb{Q}$ to $S_4$ and $A_4$ quartic extensions $K/\mathbb{Q}$. In particular, we are interested in the quantity $\mathrm{rk}(E/K) - \mathrm{rk}(E/\mathbb{Q})$ for fixed $E$ and varying $K$. When $\mathrm{rk}(E/\mathbb{Q}) \leq 1$, with $E$ subject to some other conditions, we prove there are infinitely many $S_4$ quartic extensions $K/\mathbb{Q}$ over which $E$ does not gain rank, i.e. such that $\mathrm{rk}(E/K) - \mathrm{rk}(E/\mathbb{Q}) = 0$. To do so, we show how to control the 2-Selmer rank of $E$ in certain quadratic extensions, which in turn contributes to controlling the rank in families of $S_4$ and $A_4$ quartic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a real quadratic number field with discriminant $D$ and $\mathcal{O}_F$ the ring of integers in $F$. Let $\chi_F$ be the Dirichlet character associated to $F/\mathbb{Q}$. Write $L(\chi_F,s)$ for the Dirichlet L-function of $\chi_F$. By an induction argument for imprimitive Dirichlet L-values, we get several $2$-divisibility results on $L(\chi_F,-1)$ when $D$ has arbitrarily finitely many prime divisors. As an application, by making use of the Birch-Tate formula for $F$, we determine the $2$-primary part for the second $K$ group $K_2\mathcal{O}_F$. We also give a new proof for an old theorem of Browkin and Schinzel.

Abstract:For any odd prime p, we present a reflection theorem which for p=3 is the Scholz Reflection Theorem. We obtain some formulas for the p-rank and the pn-rank(K2OF), where F is a number field.
