Abstract:The crystal structure, formation energies, electronic structures and effective masses of charge carriers of N/F co-doped anatase TiO2 were investigated by first principle calculations. We have found that the incorporation of the N atom will be easier in the presence of the F dopant. Second, the impurity band of N/F co-doped TiO2 has no spin polarization and smaller effective mass, which improves the photogenerated carriers' mobility and separation. Moreover, it has a lower band edge energy, which increases the oxidation ability of the photogenerated holes. Thus, we explained the mechanism of the enhancement of photocatalytic efficiency of N/F co-doped TiO2 observed from experiments.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2), as a kind of excellent photocatalyst, has been widely researched and applied. The geometry structures, band structures, densities of states and absorption coefficients of three possible (Nb, N) co-doped anatase are studied by the density functional theory based on GGA+U method, and the results are compared with those of the single doped (Nb/N) anatase. It is shown that the introduction of dopants leads to the lattice distortion. Besides, compared with undoped TiO2, (Nb, N) co-doped TiO2 has small band gap and absorption edge, and the level of N 2p state changes from partially occupied to occupied, which reduces the recombination of electron-hole pairs. In addition, the smaller formation energy of co-doped anatase indicates that it is more stable than the N doped anatase. Therefore, (Nb, N) co-doping anatase is a kind of stable photocatalyst and it has better photocatalytic performance in visible light band than pure TiO2

Abstract:We present a comparative study on the electronic and optical properties of Nb- and F-doped anatase TiO2 by first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT). Although both TiO2:Nb and TiO2:F have a similar band structure, the effective mass of TiO2:F is larger than that of TiO2:Nb, and the carriers density in the former is lower than that in the latter, indicating that TiO2:Nb has better electronic conductivity than TiO2:F. The interaction between photons and electrons in TiO2:F is much stronger than that in TiO2:Nb, resulting in increased photon absorption and reduced transmittance, especially in the visible and near-infrared regions. The results demonstrate that TiO2:F is not suitable for transparent conductive oxide applications. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A facile solvothermal method has been developed for preparing anatase TiO2 nanoparticles doped with nitrogen (N) or co-doped with N and fluorine (F). The effects of N and F doping or co-doping on the structural and photocatalytic properties of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles were investigated. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the synthesized nanoparticles, confirming the successful synthesis of anatase TiO2. The crystal cell parameters and crystal size decreased with the doping of N or co-doping of N and F. Photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange under both UV and visible light irradiation revealed that the photocatalytic activity of anatase TiO2 was greatly improved by N doping or N and F co-doping. The effect of TiO2 bandgap narrowing and the synergistic effect between co-dopants N and F on photocatalytic performance of TiO2 were also discussed. The N-F-co-doped TiO2 is thus a promising material for photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:Electronic and optical properties of pure, N-doped, Fe-doped and (N, Fe)-codoped anatase TiO 2 were evaluated, respectively, by using the density functional theory. The results indicate that the elemental doping narrows the band gap of TiO 2 and realize its visible-light response activity; and incorporation of Fe into N-doped TiO 2 further increases the photocatalytic activity under visible-light irradiation compared with that of the N-doped TiO 2 .

Abstract:Titania (TiO2) is a material of choice for energy-related applications, such as photovoltaics and photocatalysis. The presence of a large band gap and fast electron-hole recombination occurring in the lattice significantly reduce the material's quantum efficiency, and therefore limit industrial-scale applications. In this article, we investigate whether silicene can be a viable substrate for TiO2 nanostructures in photocatalytic applications. Calculations based on density functional theory find a strong electronic coupling between silicene and oxide nanostructures. Electron transfer from silicene to the nanostructures results in the production of active photoreduction sites involving Ti3+ ions in the system. The hybrid TiO2/silicene system also exhibits modification of optical characteristics with the capability of absorbing light in the visible range and spatially separating charges, thus displaying superior photocatalytic activity relative to pristine TiO2 for energy-related applications.

Abstract:Fe, Co, Ni, or N addition could modulate the photonic and catalytic responses of TiO2 for photocatalysts applications. Their morphologies, structures, compositions and photocatalytic performance in the degradation of methylene blue were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV–vis absorption spectroscopy, Raman spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed that dopants affect the electronic transition energies by changing the optical band gap and the impurity absorption peaks of the specimens. Especially, co-doping enhances the visible-light photocatalytic activity of TiO2 by 4–10 times that of pure TiO2, and the Co and N co-doping derives 10-fold photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:N, Fe single doped and co-doped anatase TiO2 nanoparticles were successfully prepared by coprecipitation method using TiCl4, NH4OH, Fe(NO3)3·9H2O as raw materials and polyvinyl alcohol as dispersant. The samples were characterized by TG-DSC, FTIR, XRD, FESEM, EDS, XPS, and UV–Vis to investigate the influence of doping concentration on the thermal effect, crystal structure, morphology, composition, energy band gap and photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles. Results indicated that TiO2 nanoparticles doped with 0.15 at.% N and 0.3 at.% Fe showed the best photocatalytic activity. N, Fe co-doping had a synergistic effect: (1) The transformation inhibition of anatase to rutile phase was achieved, leading to formation of high crystallized monophasic anatase TiO2; (2) The bandgap narrowing effect was significant, increasing the light absorption range; (3) The small grain size of ~ 10 nm in diameter was obtained, resulting in effective separation of photo-induced electrons and holes.

Abstract:Four different sols, pure TiO2, F doped TiO2, Fe doped TiO2, and F-Fe co-doped TiO2 sols, were prepared by peroxidation at low temperature. The crystal structure, morphology, light adsorption, and photocatalytic properties of the pure and doped TiO2 were examined by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. The relationship between the average size, crystal type, range of visible light absorption, and photocatalytic activity and content and type of doped ions were investigated. The results showed that the average size of the F-Fe co-doped TiO2 composed of both the anatase and rutile phases was the same as that of pure TiO2. Furthermore, the visible light photocatalytic activity of the F-Fe co-doped TiO2 was significantly improved over pure TiO2, F-doped TiO2, and Fe-doped TiO2 due to the large red shift in the light adsorption edge.

Abstract:First-principles plane-wave pseudopotential calculations have been performed to study the formation energy, electronic structure and optical properties of V-, N- and V/N-doped TiO2. The calculated results show that V:N defect pairs tend to bind to each other, which facilitates the enhancement of the concentration of N dopant compared with N-doped case. In addition, the incorporation of V into N-doped TiO2 lattice induces the appearance of passivated shallow acceptor and donor levels near the VBM and CBM, which would act as capture traps for photoexcited holes or electrons. Furthermore, the optical absorption coefficient spectra show that V/N codoping can enhance the optical absorption region, which can be attributed to lower excitation energy from the N 2p orbitals to V t2g orbitals rather than a band gap narrowing. These findings give a reasonable explanation of recent experimental results.

Abstract:A series of TiO2 nanopowders doped with CoFe2O4 were prepared.The influences of CoFe2O4 doping on the anatase-to-rutile phase transformation of TiO2 were investigated,and the photocatalytic activity of CoFe2O4-doped TiO2 nanopowders was evaluated by eosin degradation.From the XRD results,doping of CoFe2O4 can effectively inhibit the phase transformation of TiO2.According to the eosin degradation,the doping can obviously improve photoactivity under sunlight relative to TiO2-only nanopowders,suggesting that the CoFe2O4-doped TiO2 nanopowders could be a visible light-activated photocatalyst.The optimal concentration of CoFe2O4 dopant was about 0.5mol%.

Abstract:The electronic and optical properties of C, C–Nb and C–2Nb doped anatase TiO2 are studied using the first principles calculations. For the C-doped TiO2, three subbands in the band gap are generated due to the C-2p states, which suppress the effective band gap for electron transfer, while the gap states are partially occupied and probably serve as the recombination centers for electrons and holes. Therefore, the C–2Nb co-doping is investigated for the charge compensation consideration. Two possible co-doping configurations are comprehensively studied and compared. The three subbands in the band gap of the C mono-doped TiO2 become fully occupied because the two Nb atoms contribute sufficient electrons for compensation. Furthermore, the optical properties of the co-doped TiO2 and pure TiO2 are calculated. It is found that the optical absorption of the C–2Nb co-doped TiO2 extends its coverage over the visible light region.
Highly Enhanced Photoelectrocatalytic Properties by Α-Fe 2 O 3 Modified NF-TiO 2 Pyramids with Dominant (101) Facets

Abstract:Visible-light-active Fe2O3/NF-TiO2 film was prepared by depositing alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles onto the surface of pyramid-shaped NF-TiO2 via sequential electro-deposition and electro-anodization processes. NF-TiO2 with dominant (101) facets was obtained via calcining TiO2 nanotubes (TiO2-NTs) in the presence of NH4F. The structural and optical properties were carefully studied by XRD, SEM, HRTEM, XPS and UV-Vis-DRS. Photoelectrochemical measurements, such as linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Mott-Schottky (M-S) plots, were also carried out to investigate the generation, separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. It was found that Fe2O3/NF-TiO2 exhibited the best photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) activity relative to Fe2O3/TiO2-NTs or Fe2O3/N-TiO2. The formation of anatase-rutile heterojunction, wider spectral response, increased photocurrent response and greatly reduced charge transfer resistance, could be positive driving force for the enhanced PEC activity. Simultaneous PEC reduction of Cr(VI) and degradation of phenol were evaluated under visible light using Fe2O3/NF-TiO2 film as photoanode and Ti sheet as cathode. The calculated rate constants for Cr(VI) and phenol were 4.3 and 3.6 times relative to that on Fe2O3/TiO2-NTs, respectively. Abstract:The crystal structure, formation energy, electronic and optical properties of undoped, Co, N doped and co-doped TiO2 were investigated by first principles calculations. Considering the potential of water redox reaction of these systems indicate that only N-, Co-1N- and Co-2N co-doped TiO2 meet the requirement of the photosplitting water. Moreover, the optical absorption threshold and absorption area of Co-2N co-doped TiO2 are obviously enlarged compared with the undoped TiO2. Co-2N co-doped TiO2 has the highest light absorption efficiency and hydrogen production efficiency, due to the presence of curved and broad impurity levels that greatly improve the carriers' mobility and separation. Abstract:Using density-functional theory (DFT) calculations within the generalized gradient corrected approximation, the models that nonmetallic impurities X (X=C, N, S, F) substituted for O or Ti sites in anatase TiO2 were investigated. By calculating the formation energy of X-monodoped TiO2 with X substituted for O, we suggested that X dopants existed as C4−, N3−, S2− and F− ions, respectively. Meanwhile, the X dopants existed as C4+, N3+, and S6+ for X-monodoped (X=C, N, S) TiO2 with X substituted for Ti. The conclusion of the valence states of nonmetallic impurities X substituted for O or Ti sites in TiO2 is also supported by the results of optimized cell parameters and the local structures. Furthermore, an effective nonmetallic passivated codoping approach to modify the band edges of TiO2 is proposed. Based on the first-principle calculations, we suggested that nonmetallic passivated groups such as (S2−+C4+) and (C4−+S6+) could reduce the band gap largely and make less perturbation in conduction band minima (CBM), thus lead to an ideal visible-light absorption region without affecting the reducing power. This work provides some new results and is anticipated to give some inspiration and guidance for design visible-light-driven TiO2 photocatalyst with high efficiency.

Abstract:Nd3+-doped titania nanoparticles with mesostructures were synthesized via hydrothermal process by using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as directing and pore-forming agent. The obtained materials were characterized by XRD, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, TEM and DRS. The existence of neodymium ion affect significantly the phase transition of the amorphous to anatase, and the band-gap energy was reduced because of the defect energy level induced by the 4f atomic orbital of Nd3+ with the optimal content of 1.5 at.% Nd. Density functional theory calculations can explain the band-gap narrowing. The maximum photocatalytic activity corresponds to the 0.5 at.% Nd 3 +-doped anatase nanopowders with mesostructures, which is higher than that of undoped samples. Abstract:The Co doped titanium oxide film was prepared on pure titanium plates by sol-gel dip-coating technique using Co( II ) metal salts and tetrabutyltitanate (Ti(OC4H9)(4)) as precursors. The microstructure and photoelectrochemical properties of 5% Co doped-TiO2 film photoelectrode were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction, photocurrent response spectra, etc. The wavelength of the light source in the experiment was more than 460 nm. Various Co( II ) metal salts (Co(NO3)(2), Co(AC)(2), and CoSO4) were chosen to compare the influence of different dopant precursors and the photocurrent response spectra showed that Co(AC)(2) was better than the other two. Thus, the work focused on Co(AC)(2) dopant. It was found the photoelectric efficiency of % Co doped-TiO2 film photoelectrode was remarkably higher than that of pure TiO2 film photoelectrode. It suggested that suitable content of doped Co( II ) in TiO2 can efficiently extend the light absorption properties to the visible region, which was probably due to the fact Co( II ) can generate crystal effect on TiO2 crystal lattice. The amount of doped Co( II ) was an important factor affecting photocatalytic activities, the optimum amount of doped Co( II ) was 5%. With increasing the content of doped Co, the separate phase of CoTiO3 appeared, which reduced the value of photocurrent of 5% Co doped-TiO2/Ti film electrode. Furthermore, excessive doped Co( II ) promoted the anatase-rutile phase transformation process and reduced the temperature of phase transition. In addition, when the heating temperature was above 500degreesC, the X-ray diffraction showed few sperate phases of CoTiO3 appeared and some anatase phases converted to rutile phases. 5% Co-doped-TiO2/Ti electrode formed at 500degreesC with 2 coating layers had the highest photoelectric efficiency under the visible light ( lambda > 460 nm).

Abstract:Undoped and Fe-doped TiO2 thin films were fabricated on Si substrates using sol-gel method. XRD and Rietveld refinement results show the anatase to rutile transition in the system. SEM and AFM spectra demonstrate that the generation of agglomeration phenomena after Fe doping provides the nucleation point for the phase transition, and the difference in the Gibbs free energies of the two phases provides the driving force for the phase transition. XPS measurements verify that the formation of oxides after Fe doping contributes to the surface thermodynamic equilibrium and the possibility of the surface atomic rearrangements during the anatase to rutile phase transition. The energy band diagram illustrates at the level of electronic structure that the phase transition raises the position of the conduction band minimum of the film and the oxide of Fe that is formed becomes the charge complex center. Finally, the results of degradation of methylene blue solution under simulated visible light irradiation show that Fe doping reduces the photocatalytic ability of TiO2 films. The corresponding mechanism is proposed to explain the photocatalytic activity by which Fe3+ of larger radius replaces Ti4+ to promote the transition of the film from anatase to rutile and to act as a charge complex center.

Abstract:The electronic structure and optical properties of TiO2 doped with N were calculated by first-principles based on DFT. The band gap of TiO2 was studied after N doping. It is concluded that the band gap is decreased and TiO2 turns into direct semiconductor. The electrons transition from valence band to conduction band becomes more easily. It is also found that the static dielectric constants become smaller and the imaginary part, epsilon(2) is also affected.
