International Experience of Co-Governance in Occupational Safety

Abstract:Objectives: (1) To examine the role of NGO in occupational safety in developed countries and contribute and (2) to understanding international experience of co-governance in occupational safety.Methods: Case study method is adapted in this article. We selected trade union in US, industry association in Japan and intermediary organizations in UK as our three typical cases to illustrate how NGO help ensure the occupational safety and reduce the mortality rate.Results: The cases show that the number of death decreases with a active engagement of NGO in occupational safety. We argue that the besides the government, the third sector such as trade union, industry association and intermediary service organization also play a significant role in occupational safety.Conclusions: For this reason, Chinese government should provide a more friendly environment for NGO to involve in the occupational safety management.
