Abstract:Currently, various two-dimensional (2D) monolayer materials have been predicted to be photocatalysts for water splitting. In the present work, the structural and electronic properties of 2D multilayer Zr2CO2, Hf2CO2 and Sc2CO2 are explored by density functional theory calculations. We found that the band gap of multilayer Zr2CO2 and Hf2CO2 becomes smaller with increasing layer number and the band edge positions demonstrate to be not suitable for driving the oxygen evolution reaction. However, applying an appropriate strain to multilayer Zr2CO2 and Hf2CO2 could make them into available photocatalysts for water splitting. For Sc2CO2, due to the built-in perpendicular electric field in monolayer Sc2CO2, there are more feasible stacking configurations of multilayer Sc2CO2, yet some of the multilayer Sc2CO2 are also proved to be potential photocatalysts for water splitting.
Highly Efficient 2D/3D Structured CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 Composites with a P–n Heterojunction for Boosting Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Constructing novel surface microstructures for photocatalytic materials could significantly enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate from water splitting. In this work, novel 2D/3D structured CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 p-n heterojunction photocatalysts for water splitting were successfully prepared by a solvothermal method. The coupling of a 2D CuCo2S4 nanoplate on the surface of 3D flower-like CdIn2S4 microspheres has strengthened the visible light absorption and promoted the charge separation efficiency due to their tight contacting area. The obtained CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 (CSCIS-2) photocatalyst exhibited a hydrogen production rate of 1320 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which was fivefold of that for pure CdIn2S4. Additionally, cyclic tests demonstrated improved photoactivity stability of the samples. A series of photoelectrochemical characterizations confirmed the effective suppression of charge carrier recombination in CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 composite catalysts. Finally, a rational photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the semiconductor band theory. This work contributes to the enrichment of sulfide-based research and applications in photocatalysis.
First Principles Study of Photocatalytic Water Splitting by M$_1$M$_2$CO$_2$ (M$_1$ = Zr,Hf; M$_2$ = Hf,Ti,Sc) MXenes

Abstract:Using density functional theory (DFT), we investigated the structural, electronic and optical properties of functionalized and doped MXenes such as M$_1$M$_2$CO$_2$ (M$_1$ = Zr,Hf; M$_2$ = Hf,Ti,Sc). This study aimed to find a suitable photocatalyst that would work well in the water splitting process. Among the calculated nanostructures, MXenes ZrHfCO$_2$ and ZrTiCO$_2$ were chosen as the suitable photocatalysts for the water splitting process. The calculated value of the band gaps with the GGA-PBE functional was 1.08(0.79) eV for the ZrHfCO$_2$ (ZrTiCO$_2$) monolayer. Also, the band gaps for these monolayers with the HSE06 hybrid functional were 1.86 and 1.57 eV, respectively. These MXenes' optical properties, such as complex dielectric function, refractive index, extinction coefficient, and reflectivity, were also investigated. The results showed that these monolayers had good absorption in the visible and ultraviolet regions. Additionally, we discovered that ZrHfCO$_2$ and ZrTiCO$_2$ MXenes could be used for the water splitting process by calculating the photocatalytic properties. Meanwhile, the results showed that the monolayers of M$_1$M$_2$CO$_2$ could be promising candidates for photocatalytic, solar energy, and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) MXenes have garnered tremendous interest due to their novel properties. In the present study, the exfoliation energy, structural, electronic and optical properties of (Zr0.5Hf0.5)2CO2 have been investigated by density functional theory calculations. We found that the dynamically and thermally stable (Zr0.5Hf0.5)2CO2 have ideal band gap, high redox potential, as well as unexpectedly high carrier mobility and efficient separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. It is highlighted that (Zr0.5Hf0.5)2CO2 shows better visible light harvest than pristine Zr2CO2 and Hf2CO2. Additionally, the simulations of the adsorption and decomposition of water molecules on the 2D (Zr0.5Hf0.5)2CO2 surface have been studied to unravel the mechanism of the hydrogen production process. These insights provide eloquent evidence that (Zr0.5Hf0.5)2CO2 monolayer is potentially an efficient visible-light driven water-splitting photocatalyst.

Abstract:The photocatalytic water splitting to produce hydrogen has been extensively investigated as one of the most promising means for solving the global energy crisis and environmental problem. In this work, we have designed bilayer two dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) MoTe2/XS2 (X=Hf,Sn,Zr) heterostructures and studied their electronic, optical properties and photocatalytic activities. According to the hybrid density functional computations, these heterojunctions have been found to be stable and potential candidates for direct Z-scheme photocatalysts, where MoTe2 and XS2 layers can be used for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. Compared with the MoTe2 and XS2 monolayers, MoTe2/XS2 (X=Hf,Sn,Zr) heterostructures with internal electric fields can achieve high-efficiency carriers separation. Meanwhile, these nanocomposites with narrower bandgaps are able to make the best of the sunlight even in the visible light (VIS) region, which is good for enhancing the photocatalytic performance. Therefore, these results have paved the way for exploring efficient MoTe2-based photocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Abstract:The Z-scheme is an efficient route for hydrogen production from photocatalytic water splitting; however, there is no theoretical design for two-dimensional (2D) systems. In the present work, the 2D van der Waals (vdW) MoSe2/graphene/HfS2 and MoSe2/N-doped graphene/HfS2 nanocomposites are proposed to be promising candidates for Z-scheme photocatalysts and verified by density functional theory calculations. The fine control of the n-type doping on graphene can enhance the efficiency of solar energy utilization. Furthermore, the 2D vdW MoSe2/HfS2 nanocomposite is shown to be a direct Z-scheme system for photocatalytic water splitting without redox mediators, which is more easily synthesized in experiment.

Abstract:Photocatalytic evolution of hydrogen is a very promising and sustainable technology. However, studying multiple composite systems that include oxidized covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for the purpose of photocatalytic hydrogen production poses a significant challenge. This challenge arises from the rapid charge recombination introduced by individual photocatalysts, as well as the limited availability of oxidative COFs. Herein, ZnIn2S4 (ZIS)‐COFs (TPN‐COF) S‐scheme heterojunction loaded with Ti3C2 MXene (MX) has been rationally designed simultaneously with internal electric field for efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution. The best‐performing sample, MX/TPN‐COF@ZIS (with a ZIS: TPN‐COF mass ratio of 3:2, with 2% MX), reaches an H2 production rate of 4.01 mmol g‐1 h‐1 under visible light irradiation. Experimental and theoretical investigation reveals that the formation of S‐scheme heterojunctions between ZnIn2S4 and COF could achieve the transfer of the electrons from COF to ZIS driven via the in‐built electric field, while allows the migration of electrons from ZIS to MX. Furthermore, multiple in‐built electric fields stimulate effective separation and migration of charges, but also inhibit recombination of carriers in a single semiconductor. This triple‐coupled photocatalytic system, serves as a practical guideline for promoting the development of hydrogen. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Hydrogen is considered to be a very efficient and clean fuel since it is a renewable and non-polluting gas with a high energy density; thus, it has drawn much attention as an alternative fuel, in order to alleviate the issue of global warming caused by the excess use of fossil fuels. In this work, a novel Cu/ZnS/COF composite photocatalyst with a core–shell structure was synthesized for photocatalytic hydrogen production via water splitting. The Cu/ZnS/COF microspheres formed by Cu/ZnS crystal aggregation were covered by a microporous thin-film COF with a porous network structure, where COF was also modified by the dual-effective redox sites of C=O and N=N. The photocatalytic hydrogen production results showed that the hydrogen production rate reached 278.4 μmol g−1 h−1, which may be attributed to its special structure, which has a large number of active sites, a more negative conduction band than the reduction of H+ to H2, and the ability to inhibit the recombination of electron–hole pairs. Finally, a possible mechanism was proposed to effectively explain the improved photocatalytic performance of the photocatalytic system. The present work provides a new concept, in order to construct a highly efficient hydrogen production catalyst and broaden the applications of ZnS-based materials.

Abstract:Ternary chalcogenides ZnmIn2S3+m (m = 1–3) has great potential in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction if their low solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency and expensive co-catalyst assistance can be overcome. Herein, we adopt MXene (Ti3C2Tx) nanosheets as the noble-metal-free cocatalyst substrate to support the in situ growth of ultrathin ZnmIn2S3+m nanosheets, expediting charge separation and mobility, large surface area surface and hydrophilicity. Particularly, the Schottky junction formed at ZnmIn2S3+m/MXene interface induces the electrons transfer to MXene nanosheets timely and inhibits the backflow, further promote the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. This mechanism of the photocatalytic H2 evolution was further evidenced by the DFT calculations and experimental results. As a result, 2D/2D ZnmIn2S3+m/MXene exhibits good stability and an outstanding H2 yield under visible light irradiation, especially for Zn2In2S5/MXene (2.5 wt% of MXene), which is 2.67 times higher than that of pristine Zn2In2S5.

Abstract:The development and design of efficient photoelectric catalysts is of great significance for environmental friendliness. This paper is devoted to finding a new two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunction to realize hydrogen production from water splitting. Based on first-principles calculations, a direct type-Z C3N/WS2 heterojunction was successfully designed by combining highly active two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with C3N similar in structure to graphene. The staggered band structure of the direct Z-scheme and high carrier mobility facilitates the efficient separation of photogenerated electron and hole pairs. More importantly, the C3N/WS2 direct Z-type heterojunction can perfectly realize total water splitting from pH = 0 to pH = 7. What's more, the Gibbs free energy and overpotential demonstrate the excellent hydrogen evolution capability and the oxygen evolution capacity of the material. In , these studies provide new ideas for designing high-performance photoelectric catalysts for visible-light water splitting.

Abstract:Two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are potential candidates for clean energy conversion materials to address the global energy crisis and environmental issues. In this work, we have comprehensively studied the geometrical, electronic, and optical properties of M2CO2/MoX2 (M = Hf, Zr; X = S, Se, Te) vdW heterostructures, as well as their applications in the fields of photocatalytic and photovoltaic using density functional theory calculations. The lattice dynamic and thermal stabilities of designed M2CO2/MoX2 heterostructures are confirmed. Interestingly, all the M2CO2/MoX2 heterostructures exhibit intrinsic type-II band structure features, which effectively inhibit the electron-hole pair recombination and enhance the photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, the internal built-in electric field and high anisotropic carrier mobility can separate the photo-generated carriers efficiently. It is noted that M2CO2/MoX2 heterostructures exhibit suitable band gaps in comparison to the M2CO2 and MoX2 monolayers, which enhance the optical-harvesting abilities in the visible and ultraviolet light zones. Zr2CO2/MoSe2 and Hf2CO2/MoSe2 heterostructures possess suitable band edge positions to provide the competent driving force for water splitting as photocatalysts. In addition, Hf2CO2/MoS2 and Zr2CO2/MoS2 heterostructures deliver a power conversion efficiency of 19.75% and 17.13% for solar cell applications, respectively. These results pave the way for exploring efficient MXenes/TMDCs vdW heterostructures as photocatalytic and photovoltaic materials.

Abstract:Searching for high-efficiency photocatalysts for overall water splitting is a promising strategy to solve the energy crisis and environmental problems. Among many kinds of photocatalysts, direct Z-scheme systems have attracted much attention. Here, we propose two-dimensional arsenene/ZrS2(HfS2) heterostructures as potential direct Z-scheme photocatalysts based on density functional theory simulations. Our calculations demonstrate that arsenene/ZrS2(HfS2) heterostructures have type-II band alignments with small band gaps, facilitating spatial separation of photo-generated carriers and enhancing sunlight absorption ability. Meanwhile, interlayer charge transfer induces a built-in electric field, resulting in the band edge positions bending at the interface region. Combined with the closed band edge positions and small interlayer band gaps, the direct Z-scheme charge transfer pathway is confirmed for them. Additionally, both heterostructures show energic, dynamical, and thermal stability based on the calculated results. What is more, under solar irradiation, the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction can be triggered spontaneously on different monolayers with the potential supplied by photo-generated electrons and holes based on the calculated free energy difference (Delta G). Therefore, arsenene/ZrS2 (HfS2) heterostructures may have promising potential as bifunctional photocatalysts for overall water splitting. This work provides valuable guidance for designing the direct Z-scheme photocatalysts.

Abstract:Constructing layered heterostructured photocatalysts based on two dimensional semiconductor materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and graphitic carbon nitride (CxNy), has become a research hotspot in photocatalysis with the remarkable improvement of photoexcited charge separation efficiency. Herein, the electronic properties and photocatalytic activities of WS2/C2N bilayer and trilayer heterojunctions have been comparatively investigated using first-principles calculations. The results demonstrate that the WS2/C2N, WS2/C2N/WS2, and C2N/WS2/C2N are type-II van der Waals heterostructures, with an indirect bandgap of 1.79 eV, 1.72 eV, and 1.79 eV, respectively. Compared to WS2/C2N bilayer, the two sandwiched heterojunctions demonstrate stronger interfacial interactions, charge transfer, and visible-light absorption. The free energy calculations for redox reactions of the sandwiched heterojunctions further demonstrate high catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction. More interestingly, biaxial strains can adjust the bandgap width (semiconductor→metal) and induce the band type transition (indirect→direct) in WS2/C2N sandwiched heterojunctions. For example, a weak stress about 1% leads to direct band gap both in type-II WS2/C2N/WS2 and C2N/WS2/C2N heterojunctions, without degrading their excellent abilities for water decomposition. This work not only provides rational strategies to design TMDs/CxNy-based photocatalysts in view of interface and bandgap engineering, but also reveals their potential applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:This work reports a simple ultrasonic impregnation method, using MOF-199 as the carrier platform to construct direct Z-Scheme ZnCo 2 S 4 /MOF-199 (ZCS/M) for stable and efficient photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution. Under simulated sunlight, ZCS/M shows high photocatalytic activity, with H 2 evolution amount of 11.6 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is 48.4 and 83.3 times of MOF-199 and ZCS respectively, and the apparent quantum efficiency (AQY) reaches 4.92 % at 420 nm. The successful construction of direct Z-Scheme heterojunction greatly improves the separation of electron-hole pairs to promote photocatalytic H 2 evolution. In addition, ZCS is evenly anchored on the surface of MOF-199, which effectively solves the problem that ZCS is easy to agglomerate, and exposes more active sites. In-situ XPS, VB, band gap, work function and Fermi level is used to analyze the Fermi level alignment, interfacial built-in electric field and band bending, and photocatalysis mechanism and path of electron migration is speculated. This work provides a new strategy for the design and construction of direct Z-Scheme heterojunction with transition metal sulfide on the platform of MOF to enhance photocatalytic H 2 evolution during water splitting.

Abstract:Sustainable hydrogen production is attracting increasing attention and visible-light-driven water splitting is considered as one of the most promising approaches for hydrogen evolution and solar energy storage. Different materials have been screened at mild conditions in recent decades and 2-dimensional (2D) layered materials are considered good candidates for the photocatalytic water splitting reaction. 2D single layer MoS2 has shown its potential in various catalytic systems, and has also been used in photocatalytic water splitting reaction recently. However, current studies of MoS2 monolayers give low intrinsic activity, preventing it from practical applications. This is attributed to the rapid recombination of the photo-excited charge carriers at room temperature, resulting in poor quantum efficiency (QE). Herein, a state-of-the-art strategy to prolong the exciton lifetimes is reported, which is achieved by combining the 2D MoS2 nanosheets with solid state polar-faceted supports. The charge separation process can be facilitated by the strong local polarisation introduced by the polar-faceted supports, and tuned by changing the supports with different surface polarities. Polar oxide surface is the exposure of oxygen-terminated high energetic facet, which is known to give a net dipole moment perpendicular to its surface. Such variation in the surface properties of the support to the above metal would lead to a difference in metal-support interaction(s). The resulting composite structures show great enhancement toward the visible-light-driven photocatalytic water splitting reaction, giving hydrogen and oxygen evolution in a stoichiometric 2:1 ratio at elevated temperatures from pure water. Photocatalytic performances are improved by the prolonged exciton lifetimes and exceptional hydrogen evolution activity of 2977 μmol g−1 h−1 with impressive QEs are obtained over Ru-doped MoS2 nanosheets on polar ceria support, which is among the best of the reported results of similar catalytic systems to date. More excitingly, the linear relationship between the exciton lifetimes and strength of the local polarisation is also observed, indicating that the rational design of photocatalysts can be simply achieved via engineering their local polarisation by incorporation of polar-faceted materials.

First-Principles Calculations of Two-Dimensional CdO/HfS2 Van der Waals Heterostructure: Direct Z-Scheme Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:Using two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure as photocatalyst for water splitting is a popular strategy for the generation of hydrogen. In this investigation, the first-principles calculations are explored to address the electronic performances of the 2D CdO/HfS2 heterostructure formed by van der Waals (vdW) forces. The CdO/HfS2 vdW heterostructure has a 1.19 eV indirect bandgap with type-II band alignment. Importantly, the CdO/HfS2 vdW heterostructure possesses an intrinsic Z-scheme photocatalytic characteristic for water splitting by obtaining decent band edge positions. CdO donates 0.017 electrons to the HfS2 layer in the heterostructure, inducing a potential drop to further separate the photogenerated electrons and holes across the interface. The CdO/HfS2 vdW heterostructure also has excellent optical absorption capacity, showing a promising role as a photocatalyst to decompose the water.

Abstract:Electron-hole recombination and photocorrosion are two challenges that seriously limit the application of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) for photocatalytic water splitting. In this work, we propose a 2D van der Waals MoSe2/Ti2CO2 heterojunction that features promising resistance to both electron-hole recombination and photocorrosion existing in TMDs. By means of first-principles calculations, the MoSe2/Ti2CO2 heterojunction is demonstrated to be a direct Z-scheme photocatalyst for overall water splitting with MoSe2 and Ti2CO2 serving as photocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, respectively, which is beneficial to electron-hole separation. The ultrafast migration of photo-generated holes from MoSe2 to Ti2CO2 as well as the anti-photocorrosion ability of Ti2CO2 are responsible for photocatalytic stability. This heterojunction is experimentally reachable and exhibits a high solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 12%. The strategy proposed here paves the way for developing 2D photocatalysts for water splitting with high performance and stability in experiments.
Integration of 2D layered CdS/WO3 S-scheme heterojunctions and metallic Ti3C2 MXene-based Ohmic junctions for effective photocatalytic H2 generation

Abstract:The rapid recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs, insufficient active sites, and strong photocorrosion have considerably restricted the practical application of CdS in photocatalytic fields. Herein, we designed and constructed a 2D/2D/2D layered heterojunction photocatalyst with cascaded 2D coupling interfaces. Experiments using electron spin resonance spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and in-situ irradiation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were conducted to confirm the 2D layered CdS/WO3 step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunctions and CdS/MX ohmic junctions. Impressively, it was found that the strong interfacial electric fields in the S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts could effectively promote spatially directional charge separation and transport between CdS and WO3 nanosheets. In addition, 2D Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets with a smaller work function and excellent metal conductivity when used as a co-catalyst could build ohmic junctions with CdS nanosheets, thus providing a greater number of electron transfer pathways and hydrogen evolution sites. Results showed that the highest visible-light hydrogen evolution rate of the optimized MX-CdS/WO3 layered multi-heterostructures could reach as high as 27.5 mmol/g/h, which was 11.0 times higher than that of pure CdS nanosheets. Notably, the apparent quantum efficiency reached 12.0% at 450 nm. It is hoped that this study offers a reliable approach for developing multifunctional photocatalysts by integrating S-scheme and ohmic-junction built-in electric fields and rationally designing a 2D/2D interface for efficient light-to-hydrogen fuel production.
