Abstract:Due to the explosive growth of the Internet and increasing demand for multimedia information on the Web, streaming video over the Internet has received tremendous attention from academia and industry. Transmission of real-time video typically has bandwidth, delay, and loss requirements. However, the current best-effort Internet does not offer any quality of service (QoS) guarantees to streaming video. Furthermore, for video multicast, it is difficult to achieve both efficiency and flexibility. Thus, Internet streaming video poses many challenges. In this article we cover six key areas of streaming video. Specifically, we cover video compression, application-layer QoS control, continuous media distribution services, streaming servers, media synchronization mechanisms, and protocols for streaming media. For each area, we address the particular issues and review major approaches and mechanisms. We also discuss the tradeoffs of the approaches and point out future research directions.

Abstract:Streaming video over Internet is quickly becoming a mainstream application with the explosive growth of Internet and advances in video representation algorithms and standardization such as highly efficient scalable video representation and finalization of Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG4). Issues and challenges about streaming video over Internet protocol (IP) networks are discussed. New techniques on packetization, feedback control, rate-scalable coding, and error concealment are discussed. A new end-to-end architecture is proposed for both existing IP infrastructure as well as new generations of IP networks.

Abstract:Modern Internet streaming services have utilized various techniques to improve the quality of streaming media delivery. Despite the characterization of media access patterns and user behaviors in many measurement studies, few studies have focused on the streaming techniques themselves, particularly on the quality of streaming experiences they offer end users and on the resources of the media systems that they consume. In order to gain insights into current streaming services techniques and thus provide guidance on designing resource-efficient and high quality streaming media systems, we have collected a large streaming media workload from thousands of broadband home users and business users hosted by a major ISP, and analyzed the most commonly used streaming techniques such as automatic protocol switch, Fast Streaming, MBR encoding and rate adaptation. Our measurement and analysis results show that with these techniques, current streaming systems these techniques tend to over-utilize CPU and bandwidth resources to provide better services to end users, which may not be a desirable and effective is not necessary the best way to improve the quality of streaming media delivery. Motivated by these results, we propose and evaluate a coordination mechanism that effectively takes advantage of both Fast Streaming and rate adaptation to better utilize the server and Internet resources for streaming quality improvement.
Transporting Real-Time Video over the Internet: Challenges and Approaches

Abstract:Delivering real-time video over the Internet is an important component of many Internet multimedia applications. Transmission of real-time video has bandwidth, delay, and loss requirements. However the current Internet does not offer any quality of service (QoS) guarantees to video transmission over the Internet. In addition, the heterogeneity of the networks and end systems makes it difficult to multicast Internet video in an efficient and flexible way. Thus, designing protocols and mechanisms for Internet video transmission poses many challenges. In this paper, we take a holistic approach to these challenges and present solutions from both transport and compression perspectives. With the holistic approach, we design a framework for transporting real-time Internet video, which includes two components, namely, congestion control and error control. Specifically congestion control consists of rate control, rate-adaptive encoding, and rate shaping; error control consists of forward error correction (FEC), retransmission error resilience, and error concealment. For the design of each component in the framework, we classify approaches and summarize representative research work. We point out there exists a design space which can be explored by video application designers and suggest that the synergy of both transport and compression could provide good solutions.

Abstract:Climate change challenges require a notable decrease in worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across technology sectors. Digital technologies, especially video streaming, accounting for most Internet traffic, make no exception. Video streaming demand increases with remote working, multimedia communication services (e.g., WhatsApp, Skype), video streaming content (e.g., YouTube, Netflix), video resolution (4K/8K, 50 fps/60 fps), and multi-view video, making energy consumption and environmental footprint critical. This survey contributes to a better understanding of sustainable and efficient video streaming technologies by providing insights into the state-of-the-art and potential future directions for researchers, developers, and engineers, service providers, hosting platforms, and consumers. We widen this survey's focus on content provisioning and content consumption based on the observation that continuously active network equipment underneath video streaming consumes substantial energy independent of the transmitted data type. We propose a taxonomy of factors that affect the energy consumption in video streaming, such as encoding schemes, resource requirements, storage, content retrieval, decoding, and display. We identify notable weaknesses in video streaming that require further research for improved energy efficiency: (1) fixed bitrate ladders in HTTP live streaming; (2) inefficient hardware utilization of existing video players; (3) lack of comprehensive open energy measurement dataset covering various device types and coding parameters for reproducible research.

Abstract:For over two decades, video streaming over the Internet has received a substantial amount of attention from both academia and industry. Starting from the design of transport protocols for streaming video, research interests have later shifted to the peer-to-peer paradigm of designing streaming protocols at the application layer. More recent research has focused on building more practical and scalable systems, using Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP. In this article, we provide a retrospective view of the research results over the past two decades, with a focus on peer-to-peer streaming protocols and the effects of cloud computing and social media.

Abstract:The Internet witnessed its traffic evolved from text and images based traditional Web content to more multimedia rich applications in the past decade. As a result, multimedia and Internet streaming technology have become an increasingly important building block to many Internet applications, ranging from remote education, digital radio, Internet Protocol TV (IPTV), etc. This paper discusses the fundamental issues in Internet streaming delivery and associated technical challenges. It emphasizes the architecture and system differences between streaming applications and traditional Web applications. It reviews our research experience and presents lessons learned in this area as well as points out directions for future work.
Efficient and Effective Streaming Technologies for Three-Dimensional Wavelet Compressed Video

Abstract:Video streaming technologies are very important in many applications such as web video, Internet news broadcasting, video-on-demand, etc. Since the Internet is a best-effort network, the quality of the streamed video can not be guaranteed. Therefore, how to improve the quality of service (QoS) of video streaming has become an important research topic. Currently, research effort is primarily focused on the streaming of the MPEG/H.26x video which is commonly supported in commercial products. In comparison, three-dimensional (3-D) wavelet compressed video has not been widely used in streaming applications, but its advantages such as great scalability and error resilience ability have attracted the attention of researchers. Although the long initial delay in 3-D compression makes it unsuitable for interactive real-time applications such as videoconference, we see feasibility to use it in stored video delivery which has more relaxed delay constraint. The objective of our research is to improve both the efficiency and the QoS of the 3-D wavelet video streaming. This dissertation consists of two major topics: a highly efficient transport protocol (AVP) for video streaming and a content-based retransmission mechanism. AVP adopts a novel audio-based synchronization scheme to reduce both the header size and the packet rate while achieving implicit synchronization. As a result, the transmission efficiency is improved and the end-to-end message delay is reduced. Furthermore, AVP provides adaptive QoS by a prioritized packetization scheme. The content-based retransmission mechanism is aimed to increase the error recovery ability of the streaming system. The fundamental idea is to consider the content of the packets and the traffic of the Internet simultaneously to optimize the QoS. In the encoding stage, the content information is generated and stored based on which an intelligent hybrid decision system is designed to perform a two-step optimization. First, the bits used for transmitting each group of video frames (GOF) is dynamically allocated according to the changing traffic conditions such that the quality of video is consistent. Secondly, an intelligent scheme for retransmitting the lost packets is designed to minimize the distortion of video. Based on the research, a new framework is designed to achieve effective and efficient video streaming over lossy networks.

Abstract:Improvements in networking technologies and the steadily increasing numbers of users, as well as the shift from traditional broadcasting to streaming content over the Internet, have made video applications (e.g., live and Video-on-Demand (VoD)) predominant sources of traffic. Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its widespread application in various academic and industrial fields have focused on designing and implementing a variety of video compression and content delivery techniques to improve user Quality of Experience (QoE). However, providing high QoE services results in more energy consumption and carbon footprint across the service delivery path, extending from the end user's device through the network and service infrastructure (e.g., cloud providers). Despite the importance of energy efficiency in video streaming, there is a lack of comprehensive surveys covering state-of-the-art AI techniques and their applications throughout the video streaming lifecycle. Existing surveys typically focus on specific parts, such as video encoding, delivery networks, playback, or quality assessment, without providing a holistic view of the entire lifecycle and its impact on energy consumption and QoE. Motivated by this research gap, this survey provides a comprehensive overview of the video streaming lifecycle, content delivery, energy and Video Quality Assessment (VQA) metrics and models, and AI techniques employed in video streaming. In addition, it conducts an in-depth state-of-the-art analysis focused on AI-driven approaches to enhance the energy efficiency of end-to-end aspects of video streaming systems (i.e., encoding, delivery network, playback, and VQA approaches). Finally, it discusses prospective research directions for developing AI-assisted energy-aware video streaming systems.

Abstract:Video streaming requires high quality of service (QoS) guarantee of transport system, but current Internet only provides best-effort service, and is not suit for real-time transform of video data. To address the issues of meeting delay-constrained video streaming over Internet, this paper presents and end-to-end adaptive transmission approach without any modification to the Internet infrastructure. The design emphasis is on trying to obtain the best quality of video reception possible in the absence of network QoS guarantees. According to the estimation of available bandwidth and network feedback information, the video steam sender could adjust the sending rate, and then achieve the best transmission efficiency. Two kinds of streaming services have been considered in proposed protocols: stored video and live video. Simulation results show the well performance of proposed system for Internet video streaming.

This article discusses how to design and implement a universal end-to-end platform for video streaming over the Internet. This includes all the technical taches of an end-to-end system for video streaming, and supports both the mode of unicasting and the mode of multicasting, providing strong support for further research.

Abstract:IP networks have become the dominant platform for video delivery. However, bandwidth-hungry video is pushing networks to their limits: costs are rising for the operators and the viewing experience is not always satisfactory for the users. When considering 3D video delivery, the previous problems are exacerbated because of the higher volume of data that must be communicated, and the difficulty in characterizing the viewing experience of the end user. Consequently, network operators may be reluctant to deliver 3D video due to costs and unclear quality improvements to their users. In this setting, the true immersive experience of 3D video remains elusive. In this paper, we focus on the efficient delivery of 3D video in terms of quality and energy cost over centrally controlled networks. As a representative example of a centrally controlled network, a software-defined network (SDN) is assumed. Our approach is based on a comprehensive network-dependent 3D quality of experience (3DQoE) model and an energy cost model for 3D video streaming. By using the developed models, we formulate the problem of energy-efficient and 3DQoE-optimized 3D video flow path routing. The particular characteristic of video/depth rate allocation presented in 3D video is embedded seamlessly into the selection of the optimal routing paths for multiple 3D video streams. The formulated problem is NP-hard and is solved with a heuristic algorithm based on the branch-and-bound method after significant reduction of the solution search space. Extensive 3D video streaming experiments are conducted over an OpenFlow-based SDN with subjective and objective evaluations and they highlight the significant benefits of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Streaming of compressed audio and video (AV) over the Internet is a very challenging task since the current Internet only provides best-effort services and lacks Quality of Service (QoS) guarantee. This paper addresses resource allocation of multiple compressed AV streams delivered over the Internet to achieve end-to-end optimal quality. A multimedia streaming TCP-friendly transport protocol (MSTFP) is proposed to adaptively estimate the network bandwidth and smooth the sending rate. The resources are then allocated dynamically according to the media encoding distortion and network degradation. MPEG-4 streams with multiple video objects are used in the simulation to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.

Abstract:To support video streaming over the current Internet, a media server usually needs to perform adaptive streaming in combination with congestion control. While existing streaming schemes are mainly designed for particular congestion algorithms and rate shaping techniques, this paper proposes a general buffer-driven adaptive streaming scheme based on control theory. Our scheme can be applied in combination with different congestion control algorithms and different rate shaping (and source coding) techniques. It is also amenable to analysis and easy to implement. Analytical and simulation results show that the proposed scheme gives satisfactory video quality under various Internet conditions while fully utilizing the available network bandwidth.

Abstract:Benefiting from the improvements of Internet infrastructure and video coding technology, online video services are becoming a new favorite form of video entertainment.However, most of the existing video quality assessment methods are designed for broadcasting/cable televisions and it is still an open issue how to assess and measure the quality of online video services. In this paper, we survey the state-of-the-art video streaming technologies, and present a framework of quality assessment and measurement for Internet video streaming. This paper introduces several metrics for user’s quality of experience（QoE）.These QoE metrics are classified into two categories: objective metrics and subjective metrics. It is different for service participators to measure objective and subjective metrics.The QoE measurement methodologies consist of client-side, server-side, and in-network measurement.

Abstract:In recent years, the global use of online video services has increased rapidly. Today, a manifold of applications, such as video streaming, video conferencing, live broadcasting, and social networks, make use of this technology. A recent study found that the development and the success of these services had as a consequence that, nowadays, more than 1% of the global greenhouse-gas emissions are related to online video, with growth rates close to 10% per year. This article reviews the latest findings concerning energy consumption of online video from the system engineer's perspective, where the system engineer is the designer and operator of a typical online video service. We discuss all relevant energy sinks, highlight dependencies with quality-of-service variables as well as video properties, review energy consumption models for different devices from the literature, and aggregate these existing models into a global model for the overall energy consumption of a generic online video service. Analyzing this model and its implications, we find that end-user devices and video encoding have the largest potential for energy savings. Finally, we provide an overview of recent advances in energy efficiency improvement for video streaming and propose future research directions for energy-efficient video streaming services.

Abstract:Video streaming represents a large fraction of Internet traffic. Surprisingly, little is known about the network characteristics of this traffic. In this paper, we study the network characteristics of the two most popular video streaming services, Netflix and YouTube. We show that the streaming strategies vary with the type of the application (Web browser or native mobile application), and the type of container (Silverlight, Flash, or HTML5) used for video streaming. In particular, we identify three different streaming strategies that produce traffic patterns from non-ack clocked ON-OFF cycles to bulk TCP transfer. We then present an analytical model to study the potential impact of these streaming strategies on the aggregate traffic and make recommendations accordingly.

Abstract:Internet video ecosystems are faced with the increasing requirements in versatile applications, ubiquitous consumption and freedom of creation and sharing, in which the user experience for high-quality services has become more and more important. Internet is also under tremendous pressure due to the exponential growth in video consumption. Video providers have been using content delivery networks (CDNs) to deliver high-quality video services. However, the new features in video generation and consumption require CDN to address the scalability, quality of service and flexibility challenges. As a result, we need to rethink future CDN for sustainable video delivery. To this end, we give an overview for the Internet video ecosystem evolution. We survey the existing video delivery solutions from the perspective of economic relationships, algorithms, mechanisms and architectures. At the end of the article, we propose a data-driven information plane for video delivery network as the future direction and discuss two case studies to demonstrate its necessity.
Analysis of Multimedia Workloads with Implications for Internet Streaming

Abstract:In this paper, we study the media workload collected from a large number of commercial Web sites hosted by a major ISP and that collected from a large group of home users connected to the Internet via a well-known cable company. Some of our key findings are: (1) Surprisingly, the majority of media contents are still delivered via downloading from Web servers. (2) A substantial percentage of media downloading connections are aborted before completion due to the long waiting time. (3) A hybrid approach, pseudo streaming, is used by clients to imitate real streaming. (4) The mismatch between the downloading rate and the client playback speed in pseudo streaming is common, which either causes frequent playback delays to the clients, or unnecessary traffic to the Internet. (5) Compared with streaming, downloading and pseudo streaming are neither bandwidth efficient nor performance effective. To address this problem, we propose the design of AutoStream, an innovative system that can provide additional previewing and streaming services automatically for media objects hosted on standard Web sites in server farms at the client's will.

Abstract:Multimedia streaming over the Internet has been a very challenging issue due to the dynamic uncertain nature of the channels. This paper proposes an algorithm for the joint design of source rate control and congestion control for video streaming over the Internet. With the incorporation of a virtual network buffer management mechanism (VB), the quality of service (QoS) requirements of the application can be translated into the constraints of the source rate and the sending rate. Then at the application layer, the source rate control is implemented based on the derived constraints, and at the transport layer, a QoS-aware congestion control mechanism is proposed that strives to meet the send rate constraint derived from VB, by allowing temporary violation of transport control protocol (TCP)-friendliness when necessary. Long-term TCP-friendliness, nevertheless, is preserved by introducing a rate-compensation algorithm. Simulation results show that compared with traditional source rate/congestion control algorithms, this cross-layer design approach can better support the QoS requirements of the application, and significantly improve the playback quality by reducing the overflow and underflow of the decoder buffer, and improving quality smoothness, while maintaining good long-term TCP-friendliness
