Abstract:Traditional Chinese medicine has an ancient history and a unique system of practice which includes theory, methodology, prescription formulation, and drugs. In particular, herbal medicine is one of the most important components. Chemical compounds isolated from such herbal medicines have attracted much attention. Polysaccharides are now considered as a potentially active component because of its diverse biological activities. Many animal trials and clinical trials have demonstrated that polysaccharides from some herbal medicines are potential antitumor and immune regulatory adjuvants in cancer therapy. In this chapter, the preparation processes, structural characteristics, and biological activities of polysaccharide from the herbal medicines Panax ginseng, Angelica sinensis, Lycium barbarum, and Astragalus are reviewed.
