Abstract:Research has revealed a paradoxical relationship between family ownership and firms’ R&D investments. While the motivation to preserve family control drives family firms to avoid risky investments like R&D expenditure, the consideration of dynastic succession encourages firms to pursue long- term viability through R&D investments. We aim to reconcile this paradox by advancing a behavioral decision making model of family firms that incorporates different dimensions of socioemotional wealth as reference points. By situating our study in China’s emerging economy, we further explore how the influences of various reference points are conditioned by the institutional uncertainties prevail in the emerging economy. Our analysis of a national survey data reveals that the appointment of family CEO negatively moderates the influence of family ownership on firms’ R&D investments, while owners’ trans-generational succession intention positively moderates the effect of family ownership on R&D investments. Moreover, the perception of institutional uncertainty weakens the moderation effects of both family CEO and trans-generational succession considerations.
