Abstract:Researchers often focus on the positive implications of social capital, not recognizing that it may put the organizations at a competitive disadvantage if it limits access to other resources or discourages action. Based on findings from a large sample of Chinese manufacturers, the current study provides a more complete picture of the extent to which and under what conditions internal social capital fosters innovation and when it breaks down to limit performance. Results suggest a curvilinear relationship between internal social capital and innovation. Results also indicate that this curvilinear effect is strengthened by the extent to which employees share in the vision expressed by leaders. A moderation effect was also found with the extent to which there is alignment between the organization’s strategy and its human resource management (HRM). Innovation was greatest when both social capital and alignment were at moderate levels; a finding that suggests the HR department’s involvement in strategic planning, while necessary, may undermine the strategic flexibility needed for innovation when alignment is too great.

Abstract:This study explores the impact of local protectionism on outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) and how firms respond to local protectionism in a transition economy. We find that local protectionism exerts a negative effect on the OFDI decisions of Chinese privately-owned enterprises (POEs). However, this negative impact is weakened by POEs’ corporate philanthropy strategy, whereas corporate political activity reinforces such an impact. This research extends the lens of institutional escapism by highlighting local protectionism as a barrier to OFDI and provides new insights into how firms respond to the subnational environment by adopting various nonmarket strategies.

Abstract:Despite the increasing use of mixed ownership (domestic and foreign shareholders) in Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs), the role and performance of foreign ownership is still a controversial topic. In this paper we empirically examine the effects of foreign shareholders’ social responsibility on the international competitiveness of SOEs and the moderating effect of R&D innovation. Drawing on a sample of Chinese listed SOEs with international market operations over the period 2011–2019, we find empirical evidence supporting that foreign shareholders’ social responsibility is effective in enhancing the international competitiveness of Chinese SOEs. We also find that R&D innovation strengthens the effect between foreign shareholders’ social responsibility and enterprises’ international competitiveness. These findings are valid after controlling for robustness and endogeneity factors. Furthermore, we find that the promoting effect of foreign shareholders’ social responsibility on Chinese SOEs’ international competitiveness, as well as the moderating effect of R&D innovation, is more pronounced among Chinese local SOEs, business SOEs, and manufacturing SOEs. The research in this paper contributes to the current debate and deepens our understanding regarding the role and performance of foreign shareholders in the process of mixed-ownership reform.

Abstract:Literature on transboundary knowledge flows has primarily focused on foreign direct investment (FDI) spillover effects in emerging economies during the last decades. Little has been known, however, about whether or not and how foreign firms learn from local firms to enhance their innovation performance. The existing literature on clusters lays much emphasis on the variety of knowledge sources in the process of innovation, but it largely ignores the social and institutional barriers to transboundary knowledge flows. This article argues that for foreign firms operating in emerging economies, the issues about legitimacy and liability of foreignness might inhibit outsiders from effective knowledge sourcing; therefore, the social and institutional structure in a region plays a no less significant role than knowledge per se. Based on a large-scale firm-level database from China's information and communications technology (ICT) industry, this article reveals that local innovativeness of indigenous firms significantly stimulates and enhances innovation of foreign firms. It is interesting to find that whereas related variety of a region fails to exert positive influences, ownership diversity and a low extent of market concentration that reflect the openness of a local innovation system significantly affect innovation performance of foreign firms. It calls for more studies on local institutional and social construction of interfirm knowledge flows.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to investigate how and why corporate social responsibility (CSR) among domestic firms in emerging countries is affected by foreign competition. Design/methodology/approach The paper combines the resource-based view with the institution-based view to explain how different levels of firm–government relationships prompt firms to enact CSR when facing foreign competition. First, this paper examines how domestic firms engage in CSR in the presence of foreign competition, followed by the consideration of how different firm–government relationships affect CSR strategies for firms faced with foreign competition. Using a database of 1,665 publicly listed Chinese firms between 2011 and 2017, this paper tests four hypotheses regarding CSR behaviors, foreign competition and firm–government relationships, and the findings of this paper generally support all four hypotheses. Findings This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating that domestic firms in China respond to foreign competition by increased engagement in CSR, and this positive relationship is heterogeneous among different firm–government relationships. CSR is attenuated by state ownership but enhanced by high industry competition and high regional marketization. Practical implications The findings of this research have implications for managers regarding the integration of internal and external resources to enhance CSR as a nonmarket strategy to help maintain firms’ competitive advantages. For the government, policymakers should establish and maintain a fair and market-oriented environment that encourages firms to increase CSR engagement. Originality/value The paper contributes to the literature exploring the mechanisms that motivate firms’ pursuit of CSR as a nonmarket strategy under the impact of intensified foreign competition.

Abstract:This paper studies corporate investment and its structural change by the view of state-owned property right. By constructing dynamic investment decision-making model, we find corporate investment heterogeneity in China due to their different dynamic shifts of objective functions, demonstrated by our simulations. Empirical tests imply that the expansion of investment improves financial performance, but does not play a positive role on solving social employment. POEs expanded investment much more than SOEs did, even in the transitional period, but both of them reduced their investment significantly in new normal. Mechanisms are explored by 3-stage structural models for non-matched control group and nearest neighbor PSM matched control group. Although investment inefficiency of SOEs are concerned, executive stock ownership and equity finance could be exotic methods to stimulate efficient investment. Investment efficiency of POEs has been recovered in new normal but POEs have shifted away from ‘profit-driving’ they used to be in the old normal.
Social capital and employee creativity: Evidence from the PRC

Abstract:This study investigated how different dimensions of social capital influenced employee creativity and when the effects were stronger with a heterogeneous sample of teams in the PRC. Considering knowledge as the foundation of employee creativity, we integrated the mediating role of knowledge sharing and the moderating role of knowledge characteristics in the relationship between social capital and employee creativity. The results demonstrated that (1) knowledge sharing mediated the relationship between social capital and employee creativity, but different dimensions of social capital exerted dissimilar effects on employee creativity via influencing knowledge sharing. (2) knowledge tacitness moderated the relationship between one dimension of social capital (shared vision) and employee creativity, but not the relationship between other dimensions (relation strength and trust) and employee creativity. Abstract:Neo-institutionalism suggests unified coercion which overlooks the mutual dependent relationship between state and businesses in developmental societies. This study incorporates the insight of mutual dependence, and proposes a model of selective coercion to explain how the state coerces Chinese private firms for environmental investment. Findings reveal that the local state is more likely to coerce firms that are more dependent on the state through political connections and less likely to coerce those which are highly important to local tax revenues and those which are substantially costly for regulation enforcement. Provinces that are more dependent on tourism economy exert harder coercion on firms, whereas those that place higher priority on economic development exert lighter coercion on firms. This study contributes to the literature of the neo-institutionalist theory and corporate environmental behavior.

Abstract:Competition plays an important role in creating conditions favourable to innovation. However, is this the case for all types of competition? While recognizing the importance of competition in innovation, we address this question by examining the impact of foreign and domestic competition on the innovation performance of private high-tech new ventures. We argue that the impact of foreign and domestic competition on the innovation performance of local private firms may vary, due to the different types of resource interdependence with their competitors and learning gained by private firms. To test these arguments, we conducted a multilevel analysis of 805 Chinese private high-tech firms over the period 2001–2007. Our findings suggest that foreign competition has a U-shaped relationship with the innovation performance of private firms, whereas competition from state-owned enterprises positively affects private firms’ innovation performance. Our study moves beyond the debate on whether competition increases or decreases innovation by unpacking the differential effects exerted by different types of competitors on the innovation performance of local private firms in the context of a transition economy.

Abstract:Recent research suggests that subnational regions can explain the variation in foreign subsidiary performance. However, most studies either treat subnational regions as a whole or focus on formal institutions at the subnational level. This study examines how general social trust, an important dimension of informal institutions at the subnational level, affects foreign subsidiary performance. In a sample of 17,886 foreign investments in China in 2012, we find that the level of social trust in subnational regions has a positive effect on the performance of foreign subsidiaries, reducing the liability of outsidership faced by foreign subsidiaries. Our results also show that this positive effect is contingent on local embeddedness of the foreign subsidiaries. Our findings highlight the importance of incorporating informal institutions at the subnational level in examining strategies and strategy outcomes.
Tournament-Style Political Competition and Local Protectionism: Theory and Evidence from China

Abstract:We argue that inter-jurisdictional competition in a regionally decentralized authoritarian regime distorts local politicians’ incentives in resource allocation among firms from their own city and a competing city. We develop a tournament model of project selection that captures the driving forces of local protectionism. The model robustly predicts that the joint presence of regional spillover and the incentive for political competition leads to biased resource allocations against the competing regions. Combining several unique data sets, we test our model predictions in the context of government procurement allocation and firms' equity investment across Chinese cities. We find that, first, when local politicians are in more intensive political competition, they allocate less government procurement contracts to firms in the competing city; second, local firms, especially local SOEs, internalize the local politicians’ career concerns and invest less in the competing cities. Abstract:We document a cross-border peer effect in corporate investment across two key economies, China and the US. Results show that investment by individual Chinese firms lags US peers without feedback in the other direction. This association is stronger for Chinese firms in manufacturing, with innovative US peers, once China joined WTO, or targeted by anti-dumping investigations or measures as reported to the WTO. These findings are robust to diagnostic tests and alternative specifications. Furthermore, Chinese firms respond to domestic competition by learning from US peers. Our findings illustrate how peer competition induced by foreign trade and international institutions affects corporate decision-making in China's rapidly-growing economy.

Abstract:This article combines arguments from entrepreneurship literature and social capital theory to examine the antecedents to the internationalization of small and medium- sized enterprises (SMEs) from China. Our quantitative study of 117 Chinese SMEs demonstrates the overall importance of entrepreneurial orientation and social capital of entrepreneurs in facilitating their internationalization efforts, and also reveals that different dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation and different types of social capital exert different levels of independent influence on Chinese SMEs' internationalization. Complementary data from multiple case studies explains the variation between our quantitative findings and the findings of previous research. By highlighting the value of the entrepreneurial attributes of Chinese SMEs and the social capital embedded in their networks in the pursuit of their internationalization, the article adds to the scant literature on the internationalization behavior of the rapidly emerging Chinese SMEs. Abstract:This study uses the resource-based view of a firm to examine the outward internationalization of private firms in China. We investigate the extent to which advantages/disadvantages of resource endowment and organizing capability of Chinese private enterprises (relative to both state-owned enterprises and foreign-invested enterprises at home) may drive outward internationalization and affect their risk-taking tendency when going international. Our analyses of 553 Chinese private enterprises show that a Chinese private firm's likelihood of venturing abroad is associated with resource endowment advantages vis-à-vis foreign-invested enterprises, organizing capability advantages vis-à-vis state-owned enterprises, and organizing capability disadvantages vis-à-vis foreign-invested enterprises. These same advantages (or disadvantages) in organizing capabilities also increase a firm's likelihood of choosing a high-risk entry mode. We also find that a firm's resource endowment and organizing capabilities interact with each other and mutually enhance each other's effect on the likelihood of outward internationalization.

Abstract:Urban competition refers to capacities of cities for attracting, capturing, controlling, dominating and transforming certain resources during urban development, and capacities for wealth creating, life-standard improving and sustainable development maintenance. This paper first analyzes the external sources of urban competitive advantages: the global network-based advantages and the location-based ones. Then with the aid of method of principal component analysis in SPSS 10.0 for Windows, the Chinese urban global and local competitive advantages are explored. The finding is that the global network-and location-based advantages are remarkable for the cities in the eastern China. While for those in the western and the middle regions, affected by much lower regional competitive advantages and lower degrees of urban-regional integration, the urban competitive advantages are deeply influenced and weakened.

Abstract:<p>This paper studies whether (and how) corporate decisions are affected by internal factors (e.g., the financial conditions of own company) and external factors (e.g., the actions of local competitors) in an imperfectly competitive environment. We study the listed real estate developers in Beijing as a case study. Our hand-collected dataset includes transaction-level information booked indicators (e.g., profitability, liability, and liquidity) and unbooked financial indicators (political connections). Our multi-step empirical model shows that both the firm's financial conditions and its competitors' counterparts are essential but play different roles in the output design, pricing, and the time-on-the-market (TOM). Internal versus external factors' relative importance relates nonlinearly to the degrees of market concentration. Market leaders' existence alters the small firms' strategy and leads to higher selling prices and slower selling pace in the local market. Our comprehensive financial indicators (booked and unbooked) better predict corporate behaviors than traditional measures.</p>

An Inquiry Into Competitive Strategy And Performance Outcomes Of Chinese Born Global Firms

Abstract:The traditional internationalization process theory posted that firms expand to overseas market after solid domestic experience. However, from 1980th we witnessed a new form of internationalization process that takes a leapfrog form. They engage in significant international activity a short time after establishment. In order to understand this new phenomenon, base on literature review, we formulate an integrated framework that guides quantitative study. Targeting at Chinese born global firms, we apply survey method to examine the competitive strategy implemented and subsequent performance of Chinese born global firms compared to conventional firms. Our findings suggest that Chinese born global firms display following characteristics: (1) Born under a special Chinese market environment, the Chinese born global firms apply outsourcing tactics, they lack sufficient patent and knowledge, rely more on cost leadership. (2) In terms of export performance, there's no significant difference between Chinese born global firms and Chinese conventional global firms. Our findings not only show difference between Chinese born global firms and Chinese conventional global firms, but also imply that under particular Chinese market context, Chinese born global firms display unique characteristics compared to western born global firms.
