Abstract:This research proposes an explanation for the conflicting extant evidence about whether family ownership of a business promotes proactive environmental strategy (PES). Based on insights drawn from strategic reference point theory, organizational identity theory, and the socioemotional wealth preservation perspective, we propose that family ownership has a moderated–mediated relationship with PES, with commitment as a moderator and long-term orientation as a mediator. A test using 454 China private firms with different levels of family ownership supports the hypotheses. This shows that PES as a strategy related to business ethics does not happen without commitment and long-term orientation.

Abstract:This article follows recent development on the socioemotional wealth perspective to examine the impact of family involvement on corporate charitable donations. Based on data collected from 2,821 Chinese private firms, we find that (a) family ownership and the duration of family control positively affect charitable donations and (b) when the next generation is unwilling to take over the business, the positive relationship between family ownership and charitable donations becomes weaker. These findings show that firms’ proactive stakeholder engagement is susceptible to family involvement. They also highlight the possible existence of the “dark” effect of certain socioemotional wealth dimensions on firms’ proactive stakeholder engagement.

Abstract:Drawing on the theory of socioemotional wealth (SEW), we propose that family relationships have implications for entrepreneurial orientation (EO) through enhancing energy and reducing stress, and that this is especially important when family decision-making is not inclined towards EO. Survey data from 528 family firms, collected from across China, generally supports our model, which in turn explains the heterogeneity behind family firms' priorities and routines. The results indicated that family decision control negatively affects a firm's EO, while family cohesion and adaptability play a negative moderating role in this relationship. Our findings help explain how family provides a powerful source of motivation that can boost EO in the family business, offering mean-ingful implications for research on entrepreneurship.

Abstract:Combining the resource-based view and the socio-emotional wealth perspective, we compile a sample of family-owned and -managed firms on the Standard and Poor’s (S&P) 500 Index and examine the effect of family involvement on firm internationalization. The results show that the presence of a family member chairing the board impedes internationalization, but that this negative effect is reduced when board members are highly experienced. We also find that cross-generational involvement in the business contributes to internationalization, and that this effect is more pronounced when firms internationalize to geographically distant rather than closer regions. The contributions and implications of this study are also discussed.

Abstract:Prior research generate conflicting findings regarding the relationship between family influence and corporate entrepreneurship. This study reconciles these inconsistent findings and argues that family commitment—the essence of family influence —plays an instrumental role in corporate entrepreneurship. From the dominant coalition perspective, we theorize that family commitment facilitates corporate entrepreneurship by enhancing the firm’s long-term orientation (LTO). An empirical analysis of 956 family firms from China supports our hypotheses. This study provides new insights into the relationship between family influence and corporate entrepreneurship and highlights the LTO as the underlying mechanism of family influence.

Abstract:This paper examines the influence of family management on corporate charitable donations. Drawing from the literature on socioemotional wealth, we propose that the level of family management and corporate charitable donations presents an inverted U‐shaped relationship, and that this inverted U‐shaped relationship is weakened by firm diversification levels and an unfair competition environment. An analysis of a comprehensive data set comprising 9266 firm‐year observations, encompassing 1445 publicly listed Chinese family firms from 2010 to 2021, provides empirical support for our hypotheses. The results remain robust when accounting for endogeneity concerns. This study contributes to the growing body of research on environmental, social, and governance in the field of finance and accounting, and enhances our knowledge of sustainability practices in family firms.

Abstract:Most researchers who have employed the job demands-resources (JD-R) model to investigate the factors influencing work engagement, have omitted the effects of personal characteristics. In this study, we discussed the moderating effects of proactive personality on the influence of social support and work-family conflict (WFC) on work engagement. Participants comprised 477 workers in several airports in eastern China. The results showed that social support had a positive effect on work engagement, and WFC had a negative effect on work engagement. These influences were moderated by the proactive personality of the individual. We have also discussed the role of personality in the JD-R model.

Abstract:Using a sample of 409 Chinese family businesses, we replicate and extend an influential study undertaken by Chrisman et al. (2012). Consistent with Chrisman et al. (2012), we confirm the bridging position of family essence in transforming family influence into family-centered non-economic goals in business. We also found that the theoretical model of Chrisman et al. (2012) can be used to explain the prevalence and magnitude of family-centered economic goals in Chinese family firms. In addition, we explore the impact of external regional differences and internal firm conditions in affecting the causal relationships among family involvement, family essence, and family-centered goals.

Abstract:With the increasing complexity of the external organizational environment, employees' proactive behavior has become a critical factor for organizational success. However, there is limited research exploring the mechanisms behind employees' proactive behavior from the perspective of family supportive supervisor behavior, which satisfies employees' work–family balance. Based on the Cognitive–Affective Personality System theory and in the context of escalating work–family conflict and the Chinese cultural context, which emphasizes reciprocity, this study collected survey data from 535 employees in two stages. The study aimed to investigate the relationship between family supportive supervisor behavior and employees' proactive behavior. The results show that family supportive supervisor behavior has a positive impact on employees' proactive behavior; perceived insider status and affective commitment partially mediate the impact of family supportive supervisor behavior on employees' proactive behavior; and perceived insider status and affective commitment play chain-mediating roles in the influence of family supportive supervisor behavior on employees' proactive behavior. This study innovatively reveals the "black box" of the relationship between family supportive supervisor behavior and employees' proactive behavior from the internal perspective of individual cognition–emotion. This expands the research on the consequences of family supportive supervisor behavior in the work field and provides inspiration for enterprises on how to motivate employees' proactive behavior.

Proactive Environmental Strategy and Firm Performance: the Moderating Role of Corporate Venturing

Abstract:This article investigates how two types of proactive environmental strategies (PESs) – proactive green management and green political influence – affect firm performance directly and under varying conditions characterising corporate venturing activities (domestic versus international). The results obtained by analysing a multi-informant dataset reveal that proactive green management has a stronger positive impact on firm performance than green political influence does. Moreover, international venturing has a greater positive moderating effect than domestic venturing on the link between proactive green management and firm performance, whereas, domestic venturing has a stronger positive moderating effect than international venturing on the relationship between green political influence and firm performance. This article contributes by differentiating between two important forms of corporate venturing, by distinguishing two important types of PESs and by offering a more granular framework for aligning corporate venturing activities with PESs.

Abstract:We draw on socio-emotional wealth (SEW) theory to investigate the influence of non-family shareholder governance (NFSG) on green innovation in family firms. We find that non-family shareholder holding has no significant impact on green innovation, but the directors appointed by non-family shareholders (NFSDAs) significantly promote the implementation of green innovation strategies in family firms. The underlying mechanisms are characterized by NFSG bringing valuable resources and promoting the firm reputation, which further facilitates green innovation. The effect of NFSG is more pronounced for entrepreneurial family firms and family firms located in high institutional efficiency areas. The green professional backgrounds of NFSDAs and having excess NFSDAs also effectively promote green innovation. Finally, green innovation promotes the long-term orientation of family firms. Through this study, we draw on SEW theory to enrich research on NFSG and green innovation in family firms. Our findings can help family firms achieve a solid basis for long-term orientation.

Abstract:Family firms often face trade-offs between economic and non-economic objectives when making decisions on the pollution prevention strategy, one type of proactive environmental strategy. Existing evidence from developed economies has largely shown a positive relationship between family firms and pollution prevention strategy, but little research has investigated whether there is a positive relationship in emerging economies as well. This research adopts agency and institutional theories to examine the impact of family firms on pollution prevention strategy in the context of China. We analyzed a sample of 2348 Chinese firms using ordinal least squares regression. Empirical results show that family firms underinvest in pollution prevention strategy relative to non-family firms, particularly when the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is not the firm’s founder. Moreover, different types of institutional factors alter the effect in different ways. Regulatory pressure weakens the negative effect of family ownership on pollution prevention strategy, whereas institutional support strengthens this main effect. These findings enrich the understanding of why and under what conditions family firms perform pollution prevention strategy.

Does Family Meet Its Affective Need by Owning and Operating Business in Socioemotional Wealth Ways?

Abstract:The socioemotional wealth (SEW) model plays a vital role in family business research. However, the implicit assumptions of this model are rarely discussed and tested, which may impair the robustness of the SEW mechanism. Based on two studies, this paper focuses on the above issue by examining whether business-owning families receive affective benefits from owning businesses and running them in a socioemotional manner. Based on large-scale social survey data, the findings of our first study suggest that families who own businesses generally exhibit more identification with family identities. Although this main effect remains stable across different family structures (family size and the number of generations), it offers limited predictive power for families involving authoritative generational relationships or those that own businesses only for a short period of time. Our second study focuses on the feedback effects of specific operations of family businesses. Our results suggest that workplace family altruism and ethical leadership from family owner-managers enhance business-owning families¡¯ identification levels. However, community support shows predictive power conditionally and formal human resource management practice does not have significant effect. The above findings support the robustness of the SEW model in most cases but reveal a number of boundary conditions. Some aspects of family business operations that are widely mentioned in the SEW literature fail to provide valid predictions, which implies that it is necessary to more closely consider competitive theories and contexts before applying the SEW model.
Encouraging Non-Family Employee Voice in Family Firm: the Role Model Effect of Owning Family

Abstract:Employee voice contributes to both individual- and firm-level performance, yet we know little about voice behavior in the family firm. In this study, we highlight the role of owning family’s open communication style and propose it affects non-family employee voice via a role modeling mechanism. Then, we consider this process is interfered by owning families’ socioemotional wealth (SEW) concerns, and test the joint moderation effect of family employment and altruism variables, which represent family influence and attachment dimensions of SEW, respectively. Data collected from 251 employees in 37 family SME support complex relations: (1) in the cases of high family employment with low family altruism, family open communication enhances non-family employee voice; (2) in the cases of high family employment with high family altruism, family open communication plays a hindering role; (3) meanwhile, family open communication does not have a significant effect when family employment is low. Theoretically, we integrate social learning theory and SEW model, and contribute to both SEW conflict and family heterogeneity literature. Practically, we make suggestions for owning family to enhance non-family employee voice.

Abstract:Purpose Stewardship behavior is an important embodiment of the spirit of employee ownership, which is critical to the sustainability of companies, especially under the influence of the COVID-19 epidemic. Most previous studies have focused on how to motivate employees' stewardship behavior, but little is known about how stewardship behavior affects employees themselves. The purpose of this study is to explore how employee stewardship behavior affects their work-family interface based on the conservation of resources (COR) theory. Design/methodology/approach In this study, structural equation modeling was conducted using two-wave survey data from 323 employees through three internet companies in Southern China. Findings Results reveal that engaging in stewardship behavior is positively correlated with both positive emotion and emotional exhaustion. Positive emotion and emotional exhaustion, in turn, mediate the effects of stewardship behavior on work–home interface. Family motivation influences the strength of the relationships between positive emotion or emotional exhaustion and work–family interface, that is, high family motivation strengthens the positive association between positive emotion and work–family enrichment and weakens the positive association between emotional exhaustion and work–family conflict. Practical implications This study suggests that managers should give employees more support and care to ease the worries of engaging in stewardship behavior. Also, organizations should recruit employees with high family motivation, which can reduce the negative effects of stewardship behavior on work–-family interface. Originality/value Based on an actor's perspective, this study examines both the positive and negative effects of stewardship behavior on employees themselves, thereby increasing understanding of the dual effect of stewardship behavior. In addition, this study further elucidates the mechanisms that moderate the positive and negative effects of individual family motivation on their engagement in stewardship behavior within the COR theory.

Abstract:One of the most important determinants of performance for any firm is the unique bundle of resources the company possesses. To date, however, empirical results on whether “familiness” as an element of this resource bundle has a positive or negative impact on firm performance have been mixed (Dyer, 2018; Gottardo & Moisello, 2019; Oswald et al. , 2009; Pitchayado et al. , 2018). This paper employs structural equation modeling to examine how entrepreneurs in China’s Zhejiang Province include members of their nuclear families, extended kin networks, and professional networks in their top management teams to access different bundles of family and non-family human resources, leading to variance in firm performance results. We find firms that leverage “guanxi” (a particular concept of kin, common in China but not often employed as a construct in western-based research, which encompasses both extended family members and close friends) for industry, technical, or entrepreneurial expertise enjoy certain types of higher performance results. In comparison, firms that leverage nuclear family members for management or marketing expertise achieve certain types of lower performance results. Post-hoc analysis indicates that leveraging guanxi specifically for prior entrepreneurial experience or for technical expertise leads to greater employee growth and higher subjective assessment of success. Conversely, leveraging nuclear family members for management or technical expertise leads to lower levels of these same performance variables. However, only firm size, measured by number of employees at venture founding, is predictive of revenue growth.

Abstract:This paper, by integrating institution theory and resource based view, explores the combined effect of institution and resource on the relationship between proactive environment strategy (PES) and firm performance. We indicate that either natural resource based view or cost-benefit analysis can partly explain the effect of PES on firm performance, and our findings show that the relationship between proactive environment strategy and firm performance is inverted U shape. Further, our results show that the combined effect of informal institution and firm's resource can reduce the effectiveness of proactive environment strategy in affecting firm performance, while the combined effect of formal institution and resource can increase the effectiveness of proactive environment strategy.

Abstract:A proactive environmental strategy (PES) serves as an impactful and effective way to alleviate a firm's adverse environmental impact, and environmental regulations are widely recognized as primary and crucial for promoting a PES. However, most studies in the PES field overlook the pivotal role of external knowledge acquisition and social media capability. Therefore, we have developed a theoretical model drawing on institutional and resource-dependent theories to address this gap. This model examines how different types of environmental regulations, such as market-based incentive regulation (MBI) and command-and-control regulation (CAC), enabled external knowledge acquisition on PES and how social media capability moderates these relationships. We conducted a survey involving 385 Chinese manufacturing firms and follow-up interviews with top managers to test our model. The findings indicate that MBI and CAC positively influence a firm's external knowledge acquisition for PES. However, it is worth noting that MBI exhibits a more substantial effect than CAC. Furthermore, the influence of social media capability on external knowledge acquisition varies depending on the specific dimension of environmental regulations under consideration. These results hold significant implications for organizations aiming to leverage diverse types of environmental regulations and harness the power of social media capability to bolster their proactive environmental strategies. Finally, given the varying levels of development and economic conditions across China, and the fact that these differences will change over time, future research should consider conducting comparative studies to understand PES at a regional level, by using more empirical methods, such as longitudinal research designs and case studies.

Abstract:This study examines the influence of socioemotional wealth (SEW) dimensions on the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and innovation performance in family firms. Based on an analysis of a dataset comprising 145 family firms, our findings provide evidence that SEW positively moderates the association between EO and innovation performance. Notably, the dimension ([Formula: see text]) emotional attachment of family members within SEW solely drives this interaction effect. Surprisingly, none of the other dimensions exhibit a significant moderating effect on the entrepreneurial orientation–innovation performance relationship. Furthermore, the overall moderation is substantially more pronounced for multidimensional SEW than for unidimensional SEW. Our findings challenge the results of previous studies on the entrepreneurial orientation–performance relationship in family firms, which considered SEW as unidimensional. Finally, we discuss implications for corporate entrepreneurship as well as SEW literature and provide directions for future research.

Abstract:Sustainability issues have become an integral part of business strategies, but we are yet to fully understand the relationship between environmentalism and performance. Because of prior studies generating inconsistent empirical results, this study tests the proposition that the relationship between a proactive corporate environmental strategy and a firm's performance depends heavily on the nature of the organization's important stakeholders. The stakeholder relationships tested included government relationships, product-customer relationships, and collaborations with suppliers. Survey data from the managers of 405 Chinese firms were analyzed. The results showed that the relationship between a proactive environmental strategy and firm performance varies with the level of the firm-government relationship, and product strategy.
