Abstract:During past decades, Chinese industry has made great progress in technological innovation. It is a complex result of the changing political and technological environments. The critical factors of successful innovation are that Chinese industry paid more attention to the acquisition and absorption of foreign advanced technology until the 1980s. Since the late 1980s, many Chinese firms began to innovate with a portfolio view. This new pattern of innovation greatly enforced the competitiveness of their products. Up until the late 1990s, a loot of Chinese firms had been building strong technological competence and innovative capabilities, so they began to deepen their innovation management by managing internal and external technological and organizational knowledge, and by building their innovative network

Abstract:After more than three decades of high growth based on its low-wage advantage and relatively favorable demographics—in combination with market-oriented reforms and openness to the world economy—China is at a crossroads with a much higher wage and a shrinking work force. Future growth will depend, by necessity, more on the generation of increased productivity, and domestic innovation will play an important part in this. In this paper, we assess the likelihood that China can make the necessary transition. Using data on expenditure on research and development, and patent applications, receipts, and citations, we show that the Chinese economy has become increasingly innovative. We will argue that rising wages and expanding markets are among the important drivers of China's growth in innovation. On the other hand, we find evidence of resource misallocation in the innovation area: while state-owned firms receive more subsidies, private firms exhibit more innovation results. Innovation can presumably progress even faster if resource misallocation can be tackled.

Abstract:Disruptive innovation theory has received widespread attention. With the rapid development of the Chinese economy, Chinese firms accomplished many instances of innovative disruption in recent years, and many latecomer companies are gradually growing into world class innovative companies. As an emerging economy, it is necessary to analyze how China may achieve more disruptive innovations in the future, and what Chinese companies should do when faced with disruptive innovation threats and opportunities. We investigated several Chinese companies' disruptive growth with the aim of further developing the original disruptive innovation theory by incorporating Chinese experience. We divided disruptive innovation types into disruptive strategy innovation, disruptive technology innovation, and disruptive business model innovation, and then analyzed their characteristics separately. Using this perspective to examine different Chinese companies’ innovation processes, and adopting holistic innovation theory, we built a model for leading constructive innovation that bypasses the western disruptive innovation and creative destruction model. We propose this as a useful alternative framework for global corporate innovation.

Abstract:China has long wanted and envisioned the development of self-innovation as a means to drive its economy to one of the most productive in the world. Adopting this goal is a clear sign that China understands the Adam Smith and Schumpeterian argument that innovation is the primary way that increasing economic returns are achieved and that this is what drives economic growth. There is a long trail of attempts to build an innovation based economy in China but until quite recently the progress was at best limited to growth driven mostly by imitation innovation and more recently by technology (also acquired from others) driven manufacturing. This paper examines China's long term self-innovation policies and program initiatives, and the barriers to achieving self-innovation outcomes. Not the least of these barriers has been, until recently, the extraordinary success of the transformation of its agriculture based economy into the largest manufacturing economy in the world. Successful manufacturing driven economic growth was possible because China could channel large masses of low skilled and low cost labor into manufacturing. this success made the urgency of developing self-innovation capability not so urgent until recently. But now the urgency of achieving greater self-innovation capability is increasing significantly due to rising labor costs that are forcing a transformation to higher skilled manufacturing and service production, and in turn are make the acquisition of the required higher level technology increasingly difficult. At the same time, in this context, considerable evidence has emerged since 2010 indicating that there are many strong signs that the innovation economy in China is emerging. Despite China's continued effort to reduce the effect of the barriers in its society and economy to self-innovation, progress is being made. However, China will need to continue to implement policies and practices that soften the effect of the barriers to self-innovation if it is to fully achieve economic growth meaningfully driven by innovation. While science and technical education graduation rates have increased enormously over the past 10 years, acquiring the know how and skills to innovate are only now beginning to appear in China. The paper views innovation developments in China as exceptional given that only 35 years ago China was at best a developing economy. The transformation from agriculture dominance to a manufacturing and trade-centric economy and now on to an innovation driven economy is exceptional. The pace and nature of the change suggests that China's governance model used since "Opening Up" may lie at the foundation of a new or leap frogging model for national economic growth and development.

Abstract:After more than three decades of high growth based on the exploitation of low-wage and demographic advantages interacted with incremental market-oriented reforms and international openness, China now confronts higher wages and a shrinking workforce. Future growth will therefore depend increasingly on innovation and increased productivity. We assess the likelihood of China making this transition, using matched firm-level data on patent applications, receipts and citations and a survey of manufacturing firms. We find that embracing new international opportunities and adaptation to rising labour costs are two leading factors in China’s increasingly innovative economy. As a result, Chinese exports are increasing in quality; and the market share of Chinese exports relative to other countries has increased steadily, even after controlling the unit value. We also find, however, evidence of resource misallocation in the innovation area: state-owned firms receive a greater share of innovation subsidies, but private firms are the more successful innovators. The transition to an innovation-led economy would presumably progress even faster if this resource misallocation could be tackled.
Do Manufacturing Firms in China Innovate?

Abstract:This article provides empirical light on the debate concerning whether manufacturing firms in China are becoming major innovators. Based on an innovation survey carried out in Jiangsu Province, the article finds that most firms engage in innovative activities but these are mainly of an incremental nature. Radical innovation, as a proportion of sales, is relatively low if compared internationally. Innovation in China is mainly to catch-up and is novel relative to the firm and the domestic market. A small proportion of innovation is new to the world. Intensity and productivity indicators suggest that small, foreign and textile firms are leading innovative efforts. Firms innovate to improve their general competitiveness, including improving product quality and extending market share, obtain income from technology and defend themselves from research and development expenditure by competitors. Innovators value significantly more than non-innovators the range of innovative objectives they seek to achieve. The main obstacles to innovation arise from technical and marketing weaknesses; the perception of these obstacles varies widely between radical innovators and non-innovators. The article concludes that while innovative activities are emerging it will still take some time for China to have a major role in the international division of innovative labour.

Abstract:The political concept of indigenous innovation in China sets out a guiding principle for the country's major transformation towards becoming an innovation nation. However, firms' innovation strategies and capabilities in middle-income countries are usually heterogeneous, making a uniform response to this concept at the company level highly unlikely. The paper's empirical contribution is based on analysing survey data on technologically advanced machinery firms in China. It uses a multinomial model approach to establish which drivers of innovation go hand-in-hand with the different innovation strategies. This paper identifies different innovation strategies and forms of innovation that co-emerge as part of this transformation, leading to four firm groups: low-cost producers, technology-oriented producers, user-oriented innovators and technology-oriented innovators. It thus contributes to a more differentiated view of the effects of China's innovation-focused transformation. We find that R&D investments, governmental R&D support and scientific collaborations are key factors to distinguish between the above-mentioned groups.

By reviewing these works and investigation results of some leading firms in China, this paper advances a new paradigm for innovation management, i.e., portfolio innovation, to integrate technological, organizational and institutional factors from a strategic and systematic view.

Abstract:Chapter 2 gives a clear picture of the facts of Chinese innovation, both in terms of invention as patent registration, and organizational innovation as product, process and strategy. Once “China-also innovates” is evidenced as showed in Chapter 1, one may wonder whether that is a generic phenomenon or a specific individual case. It could happen that there are only very few exceptional Chinese firms who innovate. For instance, as we discussed in Chapter 1, only ZTE and Huawei, two Chinese firms, innovate since these two are evidenced by being listed in the top 20 companies in terms of patent registration. Though we provide more examples and innovation data from the Chinese Top 500 Companies, one may still wonder about the many other companies, given the extensive size of the Chinese market and the population.

Abstract:A comparative study of the innovation models of Japanese,Korean and Taiwan firms indicates that Korea adopts technology leapfrogging strategy while China's Taiwan applies technology value chain promotion strategy.But both of them depend mostly on overseas markets.However,Japan,in principle,depends on special demand of domestic markets and therefore it subverts the monopoly of European and American firms with the aid of disruptive innovation.On the basis of some new innovation theory and economic development theory,the present paper explores the path of indigenous innovation for Chinese firms from the perspective of international environment and characteristics of the domestic market.The study argues that China should establish a model of indigenous innovation with disruptive innovation as a dominant approach,together with a subsidiary approach of technology leapfrogging.This paper also argues that China should place emphasis on the new creative thinking based on a profound understanding of both Chinese customers' demands and the traditional Chinese cultural value.

Abstract:This study examines what factors contribute to firm innovation performance as a result of successful launch of new products in China. Rather than simply applying theories of product innovation often developed in the West, this study takes an indigenous perspective to explore what product strategies and which environment factors, defined by Chinese managers, contribute to the improved firm performance. With the data of Chinese firms from over 40 cities across the country, this study surveys more than 700 manufacturing firms that have introduced new products to the market. The result shows that while a defensive product strategy is negatively related to a firm's patent application, a prospector strategy helps increase its market share in China. In addition, innovation policy and total R&D investment drive a firm to sell more products overseas and increase its new product sales across the globe. Local talent market can also help improve a firm's patent application but often drive the firm to focus more on domestic markets. Implications of the results for theory and practice are discussed.

Abstract:Based on the theory of National Innovation System (NIS), the development history of China's indigenous innovation is separated into five stages from 1949 to 2011. In-depth analysis is taken to explore the international and political environment, innovation resources and participants of innovation activities. And then several basic elements for indigenous innovation are extracted. These basic factors include emancipating the mind, meeting local market need and cooperating between industries, universities, and research institutes. Emancipating the mind is the prerequisite of indigenous innovation; meeting the domestic market needs are the start points of indigenous innovation; and the synergy between different actors of NIS is the major driven force. And above all, the cultivation of indigenous innovation capability is an incremental process.

Abstract:Existing theoretical attempts to understand the dynamics of technological innovation have focused on the influence of regional environment and inter-firm relations. More recently, however, a number of studies have suggested that firm-specific attributes be taken as the key to innovation. This study examines the determinants of technological innovation in China's ICT firms based on a large-scale questionnaire survey. We reveal that firm-level attributes are of great importance to innovation whereas the influences of region/relation-specific factors are modified by the types of innovation and by firms' strategies and motivations. The role of regional and relational assets should not be over-emphasized at the expense of firm-level attributes. Research emphasis should be placed on the process of how firm attributes interacted with regional environment and inter-firm relations to shape innovation. The article concludes with a plea to bring 'the firm' back to the centre and adopt an interactionist approach to understanding technological innovation.

Abstract:<p>The aim of this special issue was to investigate the mechanisms behind China's innovation ecosystem by viewing the key participants at multi-level: firms, research institutes, universities, intermediaries, supply-chain systems, governments and so forth. There were interesting threads connecting research on innovation participants throughout the submitted papers. Briefly, the following topics were addressed: 1. evaluation of China's innovation performance at a regional (provincial) level and recognition of successful practices as well as problem issues; 2. the influence at a micro level of uniquely Chinese factors on firms' innovation performance - for instance, how has the regulatory context (e.g., state ownership, industry policy) shaped corporate innovation activities? 3. the relative importance of government and industry support mechanisms; 4. the roles of Chinese state research institutes and the significance of their network positions (e.g. structural hole and centrality) on innovation performance.</p>
