Abstract:Based on the social perspective on creativity, which highlights the importance of social network parameters for individual creativity, this study examines the relationship between employees’ proactive personality and their individual creativity in the context of visionary leadership behaviour. Using survey data from 247 employees and their direct supervisors from 54 work teams in China, we find that informal leadership status mediates the relationship between an employee's proactive personality and his/her creativity. We also demonstrate that the link between an employee's informal leadership status and his/her individual creativity is moderated by formal leaders’ visionary behaviour. Overall, a moderated‐mediation model is established such that, when a formal leader shows a high level of visionary behaviour, the relationship between an employee's proactive personality and his/her creativity via informal leadership status is stronger than with a low level of visionary leader behaviour.Practitioner points Employees with more proactive personalities should be aware of and take advantage of their potential informal leadership status in work teams for increased individual creativity. We suggest that managers recognize informal leaders and provide visionary guidance to promote the informal leaders’ creativity.

Abstract:Integrating the social perspective of creativity and the goal-regulatory process perspective of proactivity, this study investigates how proactive personality influences two forms of employee creativity-incremental creativity and radical creativity through multisource information exchange. Using a moderated mediation framework, this study suggests that leader-member exchange (LMX) moderates the positive association between proactive personality and those two forms of employee creativity. The results of this study, drawn from the sample of 500 employees and their immediate supervisors in a large state-owned company of China, support most of the hypotheses. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings, as well as the limitations of this study and the directions for future research, are discussed.

Abstract:Employee creativity is fast becoming a part and parcel in the wake of the increasing volatility of the employment market and the complexity of job demands. Drawing from the actor-context interactionist theoretical approach and career construction theory, this paper adds to current research by exploring the serial mediating effect of job crafting (JC) and career adaptability (CA) in the impact of human resource management strength (HRMS) on employee creativity. Furthermore, we suggest that proactive personality interacts with HRMS to jointly influence creativity. Survey data from samples of 297 (Study 1) and 390 (Study 2) employees largely confirm our model. Our findings show that HRMS positively impacts employee creativity via serial mediation of job crafting and career adaptability, and proactive personality negatively moderates the process. The paper confirms and expands the interactionist theoretical perspective of creativity, highlights the significance of integration of contextual factors, individual characteristics, and career construction, and makes certain practical sense.

Abstract:This study investigates the interplay among proactive personality, leader creativity expectations, and role clarity in stimulating employee creativity based on the theoretical frameworks of role theory. Questionnaires were distributed to obtain 290 leader-employee dyads from China to examine hypotheses via conditional process analysis. The results show that proactive personality has a positive effect on employee creativity, leader creativity expectations did not play a significant moderating role on the relationship between proactive personality and employee creativity. The interaction between leader creativity expectations and role clarity has a significant moderating effect on the relationship between proactive personality and employee creativity. These findings are discussed in terms of their theoretical and practical significance.

Abstract:Studies linking proactive personality to creativity have primarily taken a future-oriented perspective, describing a process where individuals assess future opportunities and risks of creative endeavors. Complementing this approach, we draw on an attribution theory perspective to delineate how proactive personality relates to employee creativity through the serial mediating effects of job reflective learning-a backward-looking cognitive process-and activated positive affective states. Job reflective learning captures backward-looking self-assessments and the underlying internal causal attributions, and it is differentiated into two valences: job reflective learning from successes and from failures. Based on two separate multi-wave, multi-source field studies, our findings consistently show a serial mediation process linking proactive personality to creativity through both valences of job reflective learning and activated positive affective states. Job reflective learning from successes breeds joviality, whereas job reflective learning from failures arouses attentiveness. Joviality and attentiveness-both types of activated positive affective states-in turn promote creativity. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of how proactive employees manifest their proactivity trait into actual creativity through backward-looking cognitive and affective processes.

Abstract:In this paper,we examined the relationship between proactive personality and employee creativity,the mediating effect of creative process engagement and the moderating effect of organizational innovation climate from the data of 300 employees in 6 firms.The result of data analysis indicates a positive relationship between proactive personality and employee creativity.Organizational innovation climate acts as a moderating role on the relationship between proactive personality and employee creativity,the relationship is stronger for proactive people who perceived high level of organizational innovation climate,and creative process engagement acts as a partial mediating role in the relationship.

Abstract:Drawing on social learning theory, this study presents a moderated mediation model to examine the role of proactive behavior and conformity value in the positive relationship between creative leadership and employees' creativity. Two-wave data are collected from 230 employees and their leaders in an automobile manufacturing enterprise in China, in which employees are encouraged to be creative because they need to implement novel designs and proposals to attract consumers. Statistical analysis reveals that proactive behavior partially mediates the influence of creative leadership on employees' creativity. Conformity value moderates not only the relationship between creative leadership and proactive behavior but also the indirect effect of creative leadership on employees' creativity via proactive behavior. The relationship and the mediating mechanism are stronger in the presence of employees' higher conformity value. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications as well as future research directions of the findings.
Proactive personality and ambidextrous creativity: Assessing the mediating role of role breadth self-efficacy and the moderating role of support for creativity

Abstract:This research built a theoretical model and tested psychological process and boundary condition linking proactive personality to employees' ambidextrous creativity by introducing role breadth self-efficacy as the mediator and support for creativity as the moderator. Using survey data from 400 executives of start-up companies in China, we found that, as anticipated, proactive personality positively affected ambidextrous creativity. Role breadth self-efficacy fully mediated the effects of proactive personality on ambidextrous creativity. Support for creativity moderated the link between proactive personality and ambidextrous creativity: ambidextrous creativity was higher in response to high proactive personality when support for creativity was high. These results yielded important implications regarding how to improve managers' creative performance at work.

Abstract:We develop and test a theoretical model of moderated mediation in which feedback-seeking behavior serves as an intervening mechanism that explains the association between creative self-efficacy and employee creativity. We also consider how regulatory focus influences the intervening role of feedback-seeking behavior in the creative self-efficacy-employee creativity relationship. To test our hypotheses, we conducted a Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) with 331 subordinate–supervisor dyads from northeast China. In support of our hypotheses, feedback-seeking behavior mediated the relation between creative self-efficacy and individual creativity, and this mediation effect was moderated by promotion focus. We discuss implications of the study and offer suggestions for future research.

Abstract:While the effects of a proactive personality on creativity have been well established, the behavioral mechanism underlying this relationship remains poorly understood. This study suggests the salience of the mediating mechanism of feedback-seeking behavior in explaining the process by which proactive individuals can perform creative outcomes. Specifically, based on the two axes—the types (inquiry vs. monitoring) and the methods (frequency vs. breadth)—this study proposes that four methods of feedback-seeking behavior (frequency of feedback inquiry, breadth of feedback inquiry, frequency of feedback monitoring, and breadth of feedback monitoring) mediate the relationship between the proactive personality and creativity. The results, which are based on data collected from 367 individuals across Korean companies, reveal that the proactive personality has a significant indirect effect on creativity via two methods only: frequency of inquiry and frequency of monitoring. Finally, this study represents a theoretical and practical contribution to academic research on creativity and proactivity in the workplace.

Abstract:Creativity has become prevalent in the routine work of knowledge employees in contemporary enterprises. From the perspective of ambidexterity, drawing upon expectancy theory and self-determination theory (SDT), the present study highlights the driver behind proactive and responsive creativity. Using two-stage longitudinal data collected from 373 knowledge employee-supervisor dyads in information and manufacturing companies in China, the results show that: (1) performance-contingent rewards have an inverted U-shaped influence on proactive creativity and a U-shaped influence on responsive creativity; (2) performance-contingent rewards have an inverted U-shaped influence on autonomous and controlled motivation; (3) autonomous motivation has a positive influence on proactive creativity, but controlled motivation has a negative influence on responsive creativity; (4) autonomous and controlled motivation play a partly mediating mechanism in the non-linear effects of performance-contingent rewards on proactive and responsive creativity, respectively. Managers should enhance the ambidextrous ability to deal with proactive and responsive creativity and establish an applied and dynamic policy of performance-contingent rewards intensity to drive ambidextrous creativity.

From Problem-Solving Demands to Employee Creativity: Bidirectional Support

Abstract:Previous results concerning the link between problem-solving demands and employee creativity have been mixed. In this study we clarified this relationship by investigating individual differences in employees' proactive personality and professional ethics. Participants were 343 supervisor–employee dyads in China. We examined the hypotheses using conditional process analysis. Consistent with our hypotheses, problem-solving demands were positively related to employee creativity, and proactive personality played a moderating role in this relationship, which was more positive when the employee had a more proactive personality. The interaction term of proactive personality and ethical professional standards improved the relationship between problem-solving demands and creativity, which was strongest when employees had a personality that was highly proactive and their professional standards were highly ethical. Theoretical and practical significance of the findings are discussed.

Abstract:In the information era of the rapid growth of knowledge, creativity is the key to the survival and maintenance of competitive advantage of organizations. From an interactional perspective, this paper extends the research on individual creativity by integrating personality traits and leadership factors. Using multi-sourced, matched data from 217 supervisor-employee dyads of 23 companies in China, we found that openness to experience is positively related to employee creativity, while close monitoring is negatively related to employee creativity. Furthermore, employees who are openness to experience are more creative when leader creativity expectations is high rather than low. Finally, the interaction between close monitoring and openness to experience has no significant impact on employee creativity.

Abstract:In seeking to understand the factors contributing to work group creativity in Chinese organizations, we explored the roles of two different leadership styles (transformational and authoritarian) that Chinese leaders play in group creativity through influencing internal group processes, i.e., collective efficacy and knowledge sharing among group members. We tested our hypotheses with a sample of 163 work groups involving 973 employees in twelve Chinese companies. We found transformational leadership to relate positively but authoritarian leadership to relate negatively to group creativity, mediated by both collective efficacy and knowledge sharing among members within the group. We discuss the implications of these findings for research on group leadership, group creativity and cross-cultural management.

Abstract:By reference to social learning theory, this research examines the effect of leader prosocial motivation on employee creativity through investigating the mediating role of employee perspective taking and the moderating role of leader performance. Using a dyadic sample of 262 subordinates and their direct supervisors, the results reveal that leader prosocial motivation positively relates to employee perspective taking and employee perspective taking can mediate the correlation of leader prosocial motivation with employee creativity. Meanwhile, leader performance can moderate the correlation of leader prosocial motivation with employee perspective taking. Moreover, the perspective taking's mediating role between leader prosocial motivation and employee creativity can be moderated by leader performance. Finally, according to the findings and limitations of the study, its future research and managerial implications are discussed.
How and when Proactive Vitality Management Promotes Undergraduates' Creativity? A Conservation of Resources Perspective

Abstract:Despite widely highlighting that creative individuals need to be full of vitality to function optimally, previous research neglects the very real possibility that human beings may also need to proactively manage their vitality to ignite creativity. Drawing on the conservation of resources theory, this study explores the impact of proactive vitality management on undergraduates' creativity through harmonious academic passion, as well as the moderating roles of university creative climate and prevention focus. Evidence from a scenario-based experiment (Study 1) and a multi-wave field survey (Study 2) demonstrated that proactive vitality management positively promoted individual creativity. This relationship was partially mediated by harmonious academic passion. In addition, proactive vitality management enhanced undergraduate students' creativity via harmonious academic passion in a high university creative climate, whereas the indirect effect was weak when prevention focus was high. Theoretical and practical implications are also discussed, along with study limitations and future research directions.
How Does a Creative Leader Facilitate or Hinder Employee Creativity? A Six-Week Longitudinal Study

Abstract:Drawing upon various theoretical perspectives, we examine employee harmonious passion as a mechanism linking leader creative behavior and employee creativity. We hypothesize that leader creative behavior promotes employee harmonious passion when the leader is humble. In contrast, when leaders are not humble, their creative behaviors can decrease employee harmonious passion. Moreover, we expect that employees who occupy brokerage positions in organizational advice networks are better able to convert their harmonious passion into creativity. Based on weekly repeated measures of 95 employees and their 31 supervisors for 6 consecutive weeks, our multilevel modeling results provide support to the hypotheses. These findings shed important light on the bright as well as the dark side of leader creative behavior and the critical role played by leader humility and social networks in promoting employee creativity.

Abstract:When and why do people engage in different forms of proactive behavior at work? We propose that, as a result of a process of trait activation, employees with different types of self-construal engage in distinct forms of proactive behavior if they work in environments consistent with their self-construals. In an experimental Study 1 (N = 61), we examined the effect of self-construals on proactivity and found that people primed with interdependent self-construals engaged in more work unit-oriented proactive behavior when job interdependence also was manipulated. Priming independent self-construals did not enhance career-oriented proactive behavior, even when we manipulated job autonomy. In a field Study 2 (N = 205), we found that employees with interdependent self-construals working in jobs with high interdependence reported higher work unit commitment and higher work unit-oriented proactive behavior than employees in low interdependent jobs. Employees with independent self-construals working in jobs with high autonomy also exhibited stronger career commitment and more career-oriented proactive behavior than those in jobs with low autonomy. This research offers a theoretical framework to explain how dispositional and situational factors interactively shape people's engagement in different forms of proactive behavior.

Abstract:The positive linear effect of proactive personality on both organizational and individual outcomes in the workplace has been widely demonstrated. However, with increasing research, the perception that being more proactive is better has aroused new concerns, such as interpersonal conflict and personal resource exhaustion. Drawing on the job demands-resources model, this study aims to examine the curvilinear effect of the proactive personality on innovative behavior through thriving at work under time pressure. A questionnaire survey was conducted at three time points with 548 frontline employees in a research and development department in western China. The findings indicated that there is an inverted U-shaped curvilinear link between proactive personality and innovative behavior as well as thriving at work, with the latter serving as a mediator in this association. Time pressure moderates the link between proactive personality and thriving at work, such that the inverted U-shaped link is strengthened under high time pressure, whereas the curve is elevated and U-shaped under low time pressure. These findings advance our deeper theoretical understanding of the "too much of a good thing" effect of proactive personality on individuals' workplace outcomes, as well as assist practitioners to better manage the advantages and disadvantages of proactive individuals, and create a thriving and innovative workforce.
