Abstract:This paper explores the relationships that exist between business models and the ecosystem prevalent in the 3D printing industry using information based upon seven business cases In particular, the research proposes that it is important to understand the business model formulation process and how the ecosystem evolves throughout this process to support the development of the business model. In studying the development of business models in the 3D printing sector the research suggests three stages ‘initiation’, ‘execution’ and ‘extension’ and identifies three capabilities that enable the model to mature ‘feasibility’, ‘flexibility’ and ‘extensibility’. In addition, it is suggested that the structure of the business ecosystem; product, platform, or some combination influences the potential impact capabilities can have on the development of a business model. These findings have implications for those organisations seeking to develop business models and ecosystems around emerging technologies, for practitioners involved in the development and extension of business models and for academics seeking to evaluate policy, practice and process within this field.
