Abstract:CuO/Cu2O nanowire arrays (NWAs) were prepared on a Cu foil substrate through a simple thermal process. The NWAs were then grafted with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets via self-assembly. The combination of various characterization techniques including SEM, TEM, XRD, and XPS revealed the unique integration between CuO/Cu2O NWAs and umbrella-like rGO nanosheets. The CuO/Cu2O NWAs@rGO sample was found to be more active than bare CuO/Cu2O NWAs for the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 under simulated solar light. The improved photocatalytic activity was attributed to the slow recombination of charge carriers and the efficient transfer of photo-generated electrons through rGO nanosheets.

Abstract:Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) nanoparticles dispersed on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) were prepared by reducing copper acetate supported on graphite oxide using diethylene glycol as both solvent and reducing agent. The Cu2O/RGO composite exhibits excellent catalytic activity and remarkable tolerance to methanol and CO in the oxygen reduction reaction.

Abstract:A facile one-step microwave-assisted chemical method has been successfully used for the synthesis of Cu2O/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composites. Photocatalytic CO2 reduction was then investigated on the junction under ambient conditions. The RGO coating dramatically increases Cu2O activity for CO2 photoreduction to result in a nearly six times higher activity than the optimized Cu2O and 50 times higher activity than the Cu2O/RuOx junction in the 20(th) hour. Furthermore, an apparent initial quantum yield of approximately 0.34 % at 400 nm has been achieved by the Cu2O/RGO junction for CO2 photoreduction. The photocurrent of the junction is nearly double that of the blank Cu2O photocathode. The improved activity together with the enhanced stability of Cu2O is attributed to the efficient charge separation and transfer to RGO as well as the protection function of RGO, which was proved by XRD, SEM, TEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photo-electrochemical, photoluminescence, and impedance characterizations. This study further presents useful information for other photocatalyst modification for efficient CO2 reduction without the need for a noble-metal co-catalyst.

Oxygen-Doped Red Carbon Nitride: Enhanced Charge Separation and Light Absorption for Robust CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:Utilizing artificial photosynthesis for the conversion of CO2 into value-added fuels has been recognized as a promising strategy for the ever-increasing energy crisis and the greenhouse effect. Herein, the element doping engineering of red spherical g-C3N4 having oxygen bonded with compositional carbon (C-O-C) for CO2 photoreduction has been explored to address this challenge. The C-O bond was formed by hydrothermal treatment with dicyandiamide and 1,3,5-trichlorotriazine. The experimental and DFT results displayed the optimum oxygen substitution sites and demonstrated that the oxygen doping greatly improved the light utilization efficiency, CO2 affinity, and charge carrier transfer, which enhanced photoreduction efficiency of CO2. The evolution rates of CO (47.2 μmol g-1) and CH4 (9.1 μmol g-1) using O-CN were much higher than that of bulk-CN without a cocatalyst. The main reason was the contribution of the O 2p orbital to the conduction band (CB) and valence band of O-CN, which effectively reduced the electron mass, facilitating electron/hole separation and enhancing its fluidity. Furthermore, the Fermi level also shifted to the bottom of the CB, leading to higher electron density, which further improved the CO2 reduction ability. Our study marks an important step for developing high-performance photocatalysts for reduction of CO2.

Abstract:In article number 1400696, Zhongqin Yang, Gengfeng Zheng, and co-workers report the use of chemically reduced, mesoporous Co3O4 nanowires for enhanced sunlight-driven water splitting and oxygen evolution reaction. Mesoporous Co3O4 nanowires are effectively reduced by NaBH4 and new oxygen vacancies are formed during this process. These oxygen vacancies lead to much higher electrical conductivity and electrocatalytic activity of Co3O4 nanowires.

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into various types of fuels has attracted great interest, and serves as a potential solution to addressing current global warming and energy challenges. In this work, Ag-Cu nanoparticles are densely supported on N-doped TiO2 nanowire through a straightforward nanofabrication approach. The range of light absorption by N-doped TiO2 can be tuned to match the plasmonic band of Ag nanoparticles, which allows synergizing a resonant energy transfer process with the Schottky junction. Meanwhile, Cu nanoparticles can provide active sites for the reduction of CO2 molecules. Remarkably, the performance of photocatalytic CO2 reduction is improved to produce CH4 at a rate of 720 µmol·g−1·h−1 under full-spectrum irradiation.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) can be reduced to high-value fuels using the photocatalysis (PC) technique, which holds immense potential for tackling environmental issues and energy crises. The construction of metal-free photocatalyst capable of utilizing infrared light to execute thermal-assisted photocatalysis (TPC) remains a challenge. In this study, reduced graphene oxide (RGO) with full-spectrum absorption was used as a thermal-assisted photocatalyst in CO2 reduction. It exhibited higher CO2 reduction efficiency under the visible and infrared irradiation than the sole visible irradiation. RGO-5 (GO treated at 120 degrees C for 5 h) presented the highest defect density and C-OH/C-O-C content, leading to the best PC and TPC efficiencies. RGO was further engineered with HCl protonated g-C3N4 (H-CN) to obtain two-dimensional heterojunction RGO/H-CN, which demonstrated the S-scheme charge transfer process. Owing to the synergistic effect of heterojunction and thermal assistance, RGO/H-CN exhibited better CO2 reduction efficiencies in both PC and TPC than RGO. The largest yields of CO and CH4 were achieved in 15% RGO/H-CN. This research provides new insights for applying RGO as thermal-assisted heterojunction photocatalyst for efficient CO2 reduction.

Abstract:In this pioneering work, an innovative photocatalyst, denoted as the porous erythrocytic-like nanoflower derived from zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) (CuO@N/C-ZnONF), has been meticulously crafted. This design integrates a porous nanosheet of nitrogen and carbon co-doped ZnO, strategically refined with CuO nanosheets (CuONS) architecture originating from ZIF-8. This innovative nanomaterial serves as a nanoreactor for converting CO 2 into CO and CH 4 . The distinctive porous nanoflower structure facilitates enhanced mobility of charge carriers throughout the accessible framework, maximizes exposure of active sites, and improves the flow of charge carriers while preventing their recombination. Additionally, the porous characteristics facilitate the diffusion of reactants and products. The synthesized 10CuO/N-C-ZnONF demonstrates superior photocatalytic performance, yielding high CO and CH 4 outputs of 286.16 and 39.74 μmol g − 1 h −1 , respectively, and exhibits excellent long-term stability.

Abstract:Cuprous oxide (Cu2O), an earth-abundant, low-cost metal-oxide semiconductor, has received enormous attention for its CO2 reduction ability in aqueous media by photochemical, photoelectrochemical and electrochemical methods. An unresolved problem with all of these approaches, however, is the instability of the Cu2O caused by its tendency to undergo an irreversible redox disproportionation reaction. Here, we report a way to circumvent this troublesome behaviour of Cu2O by driving the CO2 reduction in the gas-phase via heterogeneous photocatalytic hydrogenation. To this end, Cu2O nanocubes with surfaces comprising mixed oxidation-state copper Cu(0,I,II) sites, oxygen vacancies [O] and hydroxyl OH groups were synthesized. These surfaces enable heterolysis of H2 and adsorption of CO2 under mild conditions; they facilitate the reverse water–gas shift reaction, while rendering the redox disproportionation reaction reversible. This synergism provides Cu2O nanocubes with high photocatalytic activity and stability.

Abstract:In this work, a plasmonic hybrid coupling-enhanced photocatalyst of Ag/rGO (reduced graphene oxide)-ZnO, integrating superior activity, lasting stability, and low cost all-in-one, is proposed to settle limitations related to narrow photoresponse range and high charge recombination on ZnO. Graphene oxide nanoflakes were successfully composited with ZnO nanorods using the self-assembly method, then modified with Ag nanoparticles. UV-vis absorption spectra, photoelectrochemical characterizations and the finite difference time domain simulations show that this nanocomposite has enhanced catalytic activity for reducing CO2 to CO and CH4 compared to pure ZnO (P-ZnO). By tuning the content of graphene and Ag, the maximum photocatalytic efficiency of Ag/rGO-ZnO (62.7 mu mol g(-1) h(-1)) far exceeds that of P-ZnO by at least 28 times, with high stability for more than 24 h in the absence of hole scavengers and photosensitizers. Meanwhile, with the addition of Ag and graphene, Ag/rGO-ZnO exhibits a selective tendency toward the cleaner fuel-CH4, which is 7 times higher than P-ZnO. Our study highlights the potential of broadening the light response range, suppressing e(-)/h(+) recombination, and improving the stability of catalysts based on a nanocomposite structure. Abstract:The top of silicon nanowires (SiNWs) arrays was coated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) by the facile spin-coating method. The resulting SiNWs/rGO composite exhibits enhanced photoelectrochemical properties, with short-circuit photocurrent density more than 4 times higher than that of the pristine SiNWs and more than 600 times higher than that of planar Si/rGO composite. The trapping and recombination of photogenerated carriers at the surface state of SiNWs were reduced after the application of rGO. The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements suggest that the reduction of trapping and recombination of photogenerated carriers as well as remarkably enhancement of photoelectrochemical properties can be attributed to the low charge transfer resistance at the SiNWs-rGO interface and rGO-electrolyte interface. The method and results shown here indicate a convenient and applicable approach to further exploitation of high activity materials for photoelectrochemical applications.

Abstract:Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) is known to be a promising photocatalyst for CO2 reduction into solar fuels under visible-light irradiation. However, the issues of fast recombination of photogenerated carriers and photocorrosion severely limit its photocatalytic (PC) performance. Herein, we report a unique design of one-dimensional (1D) Cu2O@Cu metal-semiconductor heterostructured nanorods via a simple in situ reduction method for efficient CO2 reduction to hydrocarbons fuels. The well-defined 1D Cu2O nanorod arrays ensure excellent visible-light harvesting capability, and the in situ fabricated Cu2O@Cu heterostructure endows the catalyst with enhanced conductivity as well as highly improved separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Consequently, the optimized Cu2O@Cu heterostructure achieves an apparent quantum efficiency of 2.40% for CH4 and C2H4 and as high as 92% activity retained after four PC cycles. Furthermore, the CO2 reduction performance was further improved when applied a low external bias. This study not only provides a novel, low-cost, and efficient strategy to address the stability and activity issues of Cu2O, but also sheds light on the development of active and robust photocatalysts for energy conversion and storage.

Abstract:Atomically thin Zn2GeO4 (ZGO) nanoribbons exclusively exposing the {100} facet of similar to 1 nm in thickness were successfully prepared via convenient photo-oxidation exfolia-tion of the ZGO-ethylenediamine hybrid at room temperature. The ultrathin ZGO nanoribbons [abbreviated as ZGO(100)] exhibit efficient and dominantly selective CO2 photoreduction performance into CO with the evolution yield of up to 20.81 mu mol g-1 h-1 in the presence of water vapor, in much contrast to only CH4 production of 0.67 mu mol g-1 h-1 for (010), exposing the thick ZGO nanobelts reported previously. The atomically thin structure of ZGO(100) shortens the migration distance of charge carriers onto the surface from the interior and allows more electrons to survive and accumulate on the surface, thus benefiting the activation and reduction of CO2. The density function theory calculation reveals that the formed CO* is inclined to escape from the exclusively exposed {100} facet of the ultrathin ZGO nanoribbon rather than be further protonated to derive CHO*, a vital intermediate for CH4 formation, leading ZGO(100) to be an ideal platform for catalytically selective CO production. This work would not only enrich atomically thin catalyst materials but also render a new platform for the development of ternary semiconductors with outstanding performance in CO2 photoconversion.

Abstract:Building heterostructure of photocatalysts is considered to be promising for boosting the efficiency of CO2 photoreduction. Herein, we constructed Cu2@UiO-66-NH2 ternary nanocubes via a simple solvothermal reaction for efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction to CO and CH4. As UiO-66-NH2 uniformly dispersed on Cu2, the well-defined nanocubes with p–n junctions and the presence of electron mediators endow the catalysts with promoted visible-light-absorbing capability and charge carrier density together with facilitated separation and migration of photogenerated electrons, ultimately resulting in boosted photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity. Benefiting from the ternary nanocube photocatalyst, the yields of CO and CH4 reach to 20.9 and 8.3 μmol g–1 h–1, respectively. Abstract:Controlled incorporation of single atoms in a suitable host matrix can result in a radical transformation in catalytic properties. However, finding a straightforward synthetic strategy that offers a compelling combination of solution processing, atomic doping and a matching host is still a grand challenge. Here, a spontaneous heteroatom formation of atomic Zn sites in well‐defined wurtzite CoO nanorods, delivering high photoreduction rates, reaching 86.7 µmol g−1 h−1 for CO and 31.4 µmol g−1 h−1 for CH4 production is reported. Based on the validation of atomic Zn sites structures, catalytic process tracking via in situ/ex situ spectroscopic probes, and related structural simulations, a good description of the catalytic reaction kinetics for Zn/CoO as a function of applied potential is established, revealing how the single doping sites influence the CO2 photoreduction. Controlled incorporation of atomic Zn‐sites in suitable wurtzite–CoO matrices result in radical transformations of catalytic properties: the Zn‐doping results in optimization of band structure and enhancement in CO2 chemisorption. The catalytic reaction kinetics for Zn/CoO as a function of applied potential are established, revealing that single active sites engineering is an efficient means to modulate the CO2 photoreduction.

Cu Nanoparticles Modified Step-Scheme Cu2O/WO3 Heterojunction Nanoflakes for Visible-Light-Driven Conversion of CO2 to CH4

Abstract:In this study, Cu and Cu2O hybrid nanoparticles were synthesized onto the WO3 nanoflake film using a one-step electrodeposition method. The critical advance is the use of a heterojunction consisting of WO3 flakes and Cu2O as an innovative stack design, thereby achieving excellent performance for CO2 photoreduction with water vapor under visible light irradiation. Notably, with the modified Cu nanoparticles, the selectivity of CH4 increased from nearly 0% to 96.7%, while that of CO fell down from 94.5% to 0%. The yields of CH4, H2 and O2 reached 2.43, 0.32 and 3.45 mmol/gcat after 24 h of visible light irradiation, respectively. The boosted photocatalytic performance primarily originated from effective charge-transfer in the heterojunction and acceleration of electron-proton transfer in the presence of Cu nanoparticles. The S-scheme charge transfer mode was further proposed by the in situ-XPS measurement. In this regard, the heterojunction construction showed great significance in the design of efficient catalysts for CO2 photoreduction application.
