Abstract:Layered Li2MnO3 as a cathode material is well known for its high lithium storage capacity. However, its poor cycling performance restricts its applications due to surface oxygen release and structural degradation. So it is highly desirable to search for new structures of Li2MnO3 with longer cycle life. In this work using pressure as an effective method in synthesis and global structure search, we find two metastable phases of Li2MnO3 that belong to the space group of C2/C and R (3) over barC, respectively. The former one has the following features: a narrow band gap of 0.17 eV, a high open-circuit voltage of > 4.4 V, a better structural stability against oxygen release (long cycle-life), a higher reversible capacity than the conventional layered Li2MnO3 phase, appropriate three-dimensional migration energy barriers of 0.45-1.14 eV and enhanced ionic mobility when more vacancies were introduced, while the latter one is metallic with an average opencircuit voltage of 4 V, comparative delithiation ability, and lower migration barriers of 0.10-0.69 eV. Both of them exhibit some merits over the conventional layered phase when used as cathode materials.
Radially Oriented Single‐Crystal Primary Nanosheets Enable Ultrahigh Rate and Cycling Properties of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 Cathode Material for Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Ni-rich Li[NixCoyMn1-x-y]O-2 (x >= 0.8) layered oxides are the most promising cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high reversible capacity of over 200 mAh g(-1). Unfortunately, the anisotropic properties associated with the alpha-NaFeO2 structured crystal grains result in poor rate capability and insufficient cycle life. To address these issues, a micrometer-sized Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 secondary cathode material consisting of radially aligned single-crystal primary particles is proposed and synthesized. Concomitant with this unique crystallographic texture, all the exposed surfaces are active {010} facets, and 3D Li+ ion diffusion channels penetrate straightforwardly from surface to center, remarkably improving the Li+ diffusion coefficient. Moreover, coordinated charge-discharge volume change upon cycling is achieved by the consistent crystal orientation, significantly alleviating the volume-change-induced intergrain stress. Accordingly, this material delivers superior reversible capacity (203.4 mAh g(-1) at 3.0-4.3 V) and rate capability (152.7 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 1000 mA g(-1)). Further, this structure demonstrates excellent cycling stability without any degradation after 300 cycles. The anisotropic morphology modulation provides a simple, efficient, and scalable way to boost the performance and applicability of Ni-rich layered oxide cathode materials.
Bio-inspired synthesis of xLi2MnO3-(1 − x)LiNi0.33Co0.33Mn0.33O2 lithium-rich layered cathode materials

Abstract:xLi2MnO3-(1−x)LiNi0.33Co0.33Mn0.33O2 (x=0.4, 0.5 and 0.6) lithium-rich layered cathode materials were synthesized using a bio-inspired method. Nanoporous radial structures composed of nanometric crystalline units, inherited from bio-mimetically synthesized MCO3 (MMn, Co, Ni) precursors, were obtained for the xLi2MnO3-(1−x)LiNi0.33Co0.33Mn0.33O2 particles. High discharge capacity of 263mAh/g and stable cycle performance were obtained from 0.4Li2MnO3–0.6LiNi0.33Co0.33Mn0.33O2 cathodes. Phase separation caused by the incomplete oxidation of metal ions was identified for the metal oxide intermediates topotactic transformed from the bio-mimetically synthesized MCO3 precursors, and caused the degradation of xLi2MnO3-(1−x)LiNi0.33Co0.33Mn0.33O2 with a high x ratio.

Abstract:Li-rich Co-free Mn-based oxides are known as prospective cathode in Li-ion batteries originating from high energy density, environmentally friendliness and economically efficiency. However, the anion-involving redox process of the cathodes inevitably deteriorate the lattice structure, ultimately resulting in capacity fading and poor kinetics, which is closely related to the aggregated distribution of LiMn6 superstructure units. Herein, the sophisticated interplay between electrochemical performance and local structure controlled by synthesis conditions has been unlocked. It explores that the phase composition and local cationic ordering of Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2 (LNM) at atomic scale can be adjusted by synthesis atmosphere. The material obtained under argon atmosphere exhibits robust layered structure with LiTMO2-like (TM: Ni, Mn) phase intergrew with Li2MnO3 phase at atomic scale, where the Ni ions partially occupied TM layer's sites of Li2MnO3, breaking the dispersion of LiMn6 superstructure unit. The obtained two phases coexistence structure at atomic level not only fully exploit the anionic redox activity but also stabilize the crystal structure during long-term cycling, which delivered an ultrahigh discharge capacity (303.4 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C) and outstanding cyclability (capacity retention of 88.1% after 500 cycles at 1 C). This work highlights the impact of synthesis conditions on the localized electronic structure and elucidates the structure-electrochemical performance relationship, providing novel insights in the design in cathode materials for advanced Li ion battery.

Abstract:Lithium rich manganese-based layered material is a promising high-capacity cathode candidate for lithium ion batteries, but it usually exhibits poor cycling stability and low safety because of the issues of oxygen ions unstability under high voltage. A strategy to promote the electrode performance of lithium rich manganese-based layered material through incorporation of boracic polyanion has been developed. As-synthesized Li[Li0.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54](BO4)0.015(BO3)0.005O1.925 showed superior reversible capacity of 300 mAh/g after 80 cycles, excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 89% within 300 cycles, higher thermal stability and enhanced redox couple potentials in comparison with pristine Li[Li0.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54]O2 when used as an cathode material for lithium ion batteries, which can be attributed to the tuned electronic structure after the incorporation. This facile enhanced strategy is expected to be extended to other high capacity electrode systems.

Abstract:Li and Mn rich (LMR) layered oxides, written as xLi2MnO3·(1 − x)LiMO2 (M = Mn, Ni, Co, Fe, etc.), have been widely reported in recent years due to their high capacity and high energy density. The stable structure and superior performance of LMR oxides make them one of the most promising candidates for the next-generation cathode materials. However, the commercialization of these materials is hindered by several drawbacks, such as low initial Coulombic efficiency, the degradation of voltage and capacity during cycling, and poor rate performance. This review summarizes research progress in solving these concerns of LMR cathodes over the past decade by following three classes of strategies: morphology design, bulk design, and surface modification. We elaborate on the processing procedures, electrochemical performance, mechanisms, and limitations of each approach, and finally put forward the concerns left and the possible solutions for the commercialization of LMR cathodes.

Abstract:Olivine-type LiMnxFe1-xPO4 (LMFP) has inherited the excellent heat-stable structure of LiFePO4 (LFP) and the high-voltage property of LiMnPO4 (LMP), which shows great promise as a high-safety, high-energy-density cathode material. In order to combine the high energy density and excellent electrochemical performance, it is essential to consider the Mn/Fe ratio. This paper presents a theoretical investigation of the lattice structure parameters, embedded lithium voltage, local electron density, migration barrier, and lithium ion delithiation and lithiation mechanism of different LiMnxFe1-xPO4 (0.5 ≤ x ≤ 0.8) compounds. In situ-coated LiMnxFe1-xPO4 (0.5 ≤ x ≤ 0.8) composite cathode materials with a size of 100-200 nm were prepared by a hydrothermal method to verify the theoretical study. LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4/C exhibited a specific capacity of 140.2 and 97.58 mA h·g-1 at 1 and 5C, respectively, and a remarkable capacity retention rate of 88.5% after 200 cycles at 1C. When LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4/C was assembled into a flexible pouch battery and subjected to long cycle tests at different rates and squeeze and extrusion tests, it demonstrated a capacity retention rate of 99.35% for 100 cycles at 0.2C and 93.2% for 200 cycles at 0.5C. Moreover, the structural evolution of LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4/C were analyzed in situ XRD, indicating a high stability and the resulted as obtine electrochemical performance, paving the way for optimization of high-energy-density LMFP cathode materials.

Abstract:The search for cathode materials with high energy density, long-term cycling stability, and low cost is one of the most important challenges for current lithium-ion batteries. To address the structural instability in Mn-rich layered cathodes, we demonstrate herein through thorough experimental and theoretical studies that delocalizing Li@Mn-6 superstructure units within transition-metal layers is an effective strategy to enhance the layer stability of a Li-excess Mn-rich layered oxide (LMRO) cathode. The delocalized Li@Mn-6 superstructure units can not only increase the Mn valence to inhibit the adverse Jahn-Teller effect but also harness the anionic redox activity with suppressed O-Mn-0 species. Benefited from its stable layered structure, the LMRO cathode can retain a high capacity and energy density of 251 mA h g(-1) and 791 W h kg(-1), respectively, after 100 cycles with nearly 100% retention. This work provides a feasible route to develop the high-performance layered cathodes with stable anionic redox chemistry.
Synthesis and Performance of Mn-doped Li3Fe2(PO4)3 Materials

Abstract:The monoclinic Li(subscript 3+x)Fe(subscript 2-x)Mn(superscript Ⅱ subscript x)(PO4)3(x=0-0.1), Li3Fe1.95Mn(superscript Ⅲ subscript 0.05)(PO4)3 and Li2.95Fe1.95Mn(superscript Ⅳ subscript 0.05)(PO4)3 cathodes were synthesized by solid state reaction. The synthesized powders were ball-milled with acethylene carbon to reduce the particle sizes and improve the electronic conductivity of the active materials. The galvanostatic charge/discharge test and the cyclic voltammetry (C-V) revealed that all of them had two plateau potentials of Fe(superscript 3+)/Fe(superscript 2+) couple vs. Li/Li(superscript +) at 2.8 and 2.7V upon discharge. The plateau potential of Mn(superscript 3+)/Mn(superscript 2+) at 3.5V was observed in Li(subscript 3+x)Fe(subscript 2-x)Mn(superscript Ⅱ subscript x)(PO4)3 and Li3Fe1.95Mn(superscript Ⅲ subscript 0.05) (PO4)3 cathodes. Furthermore, the Mn doping was demonstrated to be able to improve the electrochemical performances of the cathodes. In all the samples, the Li3.05Fe1.95Mn(superscript Ⅱ subscript 0.05)(PO4)3/C cathode showed the best electrochemical performances and possessed the discharge capacities of 110mAh/g at C/20 and 66mAh/g at C/2.

Abstract:High-energy lithium-rich and manganese-based layered materials are one of the most promising candidates for the cathode materials of lithium-ion batteries. These cathode materials can deliver anomalously high capacity due to multiple electron transfers involving both cationic and anionic redox processes. An unprecedented homogeneous monoclinic Li2MnO3-like structured material Li1.2Ni0.25Mn0.55O2, which with the highest nickel content among the Li-rich materials, is first disclosed in this work. Our proposed Li1.2Ni0.25Mn0.55O2 material can deliver a reversible capacity exceeding 295 mAh.g(-1) with a high and stable discharge voltage. It is especially encouraging that the as-prepared Li1.2Ni0.25Mn0.55O2 cathode material displays high charge-discharge efficiency and good capacity retention during cycling. In this work, we applied in-situ EIS and ex-situ XPS methods to systematically investigate the reversible structural evolution of Li1.2Ni0.25Mn0.55O2 cathode material and cathode-electrolyte interfaces (CEI). Low-cost and eco-friendly synthesis of octahedral LiMn2O4 cathode material with excellent electrochemical performance

Abstract:Here, high-performance LiMn2O4 particles of octahedral morphology with exposed (111) planes were synthesized via an easy, inexpensive and eco-friendly process using octahedral-shaped Mn3O4 as precursor, which was fabricated by reacting potassium permanganate (KMnO4) with a tiny amount of ethylene glycol (C2H6O2) using the hydrothermal method. Without cation doping and surface modification, the octahedral LiMn2O4 particles showed very good cycling life and outstanding high-temperature performance. When cycled at 1.0 C, it exhibited a desirable capacity of 123.6 mAh g−1 (Retention after 200 cycles: 93.7%). At high rate of 10 C, this material delivered 85.7 and 85.3 mAh g−1 discharge capacities with excellent retentions of 94.7% and 90.5% after 200 cycles at 25 and 55 °C, respectively. Such impressive performance was obtained largely from the unique octahedral morphology with exposed (111) planes, high crystallinity and uniform particle size distribution, which effectively mitigated the dissolution of manganese, maintained the structural stability and accelerated the diffusion of lithium ions.
Design of a new Li-rich Mn-based ternary cathode material based on Ni, Co, and Mn action mechanism

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, as the most advanced energy storage devices currently available, urgently require the development of cathode materials with high capacity, large specific energy, and fast charge/discharge performance to satisfy the continuous technological innovation. Here, a Li-rich Mn-based ternary cathode material Li7/6Nil/6Co1/6Mn1/2O2 is designed, and the geometrical structure, electronic properties, and thermodynamic properties of this material are investigated employing first-principles method. Six layered structure models are established by adjusting the ratio of Ni, Co, and Mn elements, and the effects of various elements on material properties are evaluated. Based on the performance of Ni, Co, and Mn in the structure, Li1.2Ni0.15Co0.1Mn0.55O2 features favorbale electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and excellent stability. This material obtained through co-precipitation high temperature solid phase synthesis presents high actual capacity (245 mA·h/g) and superior cycling performance (capacity retention rate of the material is 84% after 60 cycles at 0.2 C). This effort discusses the Li-rich Mn-based cathode materials in terms of structural basis, reaction mechanism, and application exploration, which are valuable for guiding their theoretical design, optimization modification, and industrial application.

Abstract:Lithium manganese oxides have generated great interest as insertion cathodes (positive electrodes) for rechargeable lithium batteries, due to their high energy density, low cost, and low toxicity. While earlier studies focused on LiMn2O4 spinel, but to date, the Jahn-Teller effect and manganese dissolution in liquid electrolyte for LiMn2O4 cathodes during cycling have not been solved thoroughly. Recently years, the layered structure LiMnO2 have gained increasing attention due to their higher realizable energy density. Accelerating the Activation of Li2MnO3 in Li-rich High-Mn Cathodes to Improve Its Electrochemical Performance.

Abstract:Li-rich high-Mn oxides, xLi2MnO3·(1 - x)LiMO2 (x ≥ 0.5, M = Co, Ni, Mn…), have attracted extensive research interest due to their high specific capacity and low cost. However, slow Li2MnO3 activation and poor cycling stability have affected their electrochemical performance. Herein, to solve these problems, morphology regulation and LiAlF4 coating strategies have been synergistically applied to a Li-rich high-Mn material Li1.7Mn0.8Co0.1Ni0.1O2.7 (HM-811). This dual-strategy successfully promotes the activation process of the Li2MnO3 phase and thus improves the electrochemical performance of HM-811. Theoretical computation indicates that the LiAlF4 layer has a lower Li+ migration barrier than the HM-811 matrix, so it could boost the diffusion of Li+ ions and promote the activation of the Li2MnO3 phase. Benefiting from the morphology regulation and LiAlF4 coating, the HM-811 cathode shows a high initial charge capacity of >300 mA h g-1. In addition, the modified HM-811 could deliver superior electrochemical performance even at a low temperature of -20 °C. This work provides a new approach for developing high performance cathode materials for next-generation Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:The possibility of Mn-based Li-rich layered oxides 0.3Li(2)MnO(3)center dot 0.7LiNi(1/3)Co(1/3)Mn(1/3)O(2) as anode material for Li-ion batteries is explored. Ex-situ XRD patterns show that the layered structure remained when discharged to 1.2 V and the phase of Li2O and transition metal (Ni, Mn and Co) emerged when discharged to 0.05 V, indicating that there exists conversion reaction mechanism like transition-metal oxides anode material. The reversible capacities reach 574.2 and 449.8 mAh g(-1) at the current density of 50 mA g(-1) and 200 mA g(-1) respectively after 80 cycles. This study suggests that further optimizing Mn-based Li-rich layered oxides is a promising alternative anode material for Li-ion batteries. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Li-rich Mn-based cathode materials possess a high specific capacity, but their application is hindered by inherent anion activity and surface instability. In this regard, a perovskite-type LaMnO3 modified layer was epitaxially grown on the surface of Li-rich Mn-based cathode through La reaction with Mn provided by bulk materials. XRD and XPS results confirmed the successful preparation of LaMnO3 and revealed the reaction mechanism. SEM and TEM results further verified the epitaxial growth and uniform distribution of LaMnO3. The modified Li-rich Mn-based cathode materials showed outstanding rate capability and satisfactory cycle durability, which exhibited 155.4 mAh g−1 at 5 C and maintained 85.4% at 1 C after 200 cycles during 2.0–4.8 V of operation. The anion activity (O2-, O22-) was effectively suppressed, resulting in more stable discharge voltage and enhanced initial coulomb efficiency. The surface of the cathode was protected by LaMnO3, leading to reduced surface by-products and fixed lattice O. The more stable lattice structures and high conductivity of LaMnO3 led to easy charge transfer and excellent electrochemical performance.

Abstract:In the current field of lithium battery energy storage, some commonly used cathode materials have been unable to meet some large-scale intelligent energy storage equipment. Layered lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials have great development potential due to their high capacity and high operating voltage. However, it currently has fast capacity decay and poor rate performance, because the layered structure of the material can easily collapse during the cycle. To solve this problem, we modified the surface of the material with Al2O3 coating. The results show that the performance of modified material is significantly improved because of the reduction in corrosion on the electrode. The electrochemical performance has also been improved in the full-cell system. Moreover, the pouch cell of modified electrode has also been measured, but the device is not affected under different bending states, indicating that the modified electrode presents a promising application in the field of flexible electronic devices.

Abstract:Li-rich layered oxide of Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2 (LMNO) with a considerable specific capacity and higher voltage is regarded as a kind of promising cathode material. However, it suffers from transition metal ion dissolution and oxygen escape that leads to rapid capacity decay. In addition, the poor lithium-ion diffusion kinetics gives rise to unsatisfied rate performance. Herein, a stable layer of Li0.5Mn0.5O (LMO) out of LMNO is in-situ constructed through acetic passivation and following calcination process. The generated defect structure in the composite material exhibits fast ion diffusion kinetics and the produced LMO layer can stabilize the substructure, resulting in elevated cycling stability and rate performance. In specific, the material exhibits a high initial coulombic efficiency of 80.3% and remarkable capacity retention of 80.7% after 200 cycles at 1 C. Besides, the composite material reveals prominent rate performance that delivers discharge capacities of 158 and 131 mAh g−1 at 5 and 10 C, respectively. At last, this study presents a new approach to optimizing the Li-rich cathode materials.

Abstract:Layered high manganese cathode materials Li1+n[NimComMn1−2m]O2 (n=0.46 and 0.36; m=0.15, 0.20 and 0.25) are prepared by coprecipitation method. The manganese (m<0.25) and lithium (n>0.3) content in the system are controlled at a high level. Structural and electrochemical feature changes of the resulted cathode materials have been studied thoroughly. The results indicate that the excess lithium in the cathode materials system tends to stabilize the high-Mn layered structure and improve electrochemical performance. The results reveal that samples of m=0.15 with a high manganese content exhibit the highest capacity and best cycling efficiency. The improved electrochemical performance is considered to be owing to the slow activation of Li2MnO3, which is good for stabilizing the structure.
