Abstract:Supported metal and metal oxides are among the most widely used heterogeneous catalysts. Most oxidation, redox, CO insertion, or hydrogen transfer reactions require such catalytic materials. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have drawn the attention of the research community in nanotechnology, moving one step forward to the frontline of possible candidates for advanced catalyst design. MOFs contain three well-differentiated parts where the catalytic function can be allocated: the metallic component, the organic linker, and the pore space. This chapter highlights the potential of the MOF-mediated synthesis (MOFMS) by selecting recent examples of catalytic processes in which MOFs act as sacrificial templates for the synthesis of improved catalysts. In line with the type of material obtained through the MOFMS, the chapter is divided into three different sections: metals and metal oxides, nanostructured carbons, and metal nanoparticles in carbon.
