Abstract:BiOI/BiOBr composite visible photocatalyst was prepared via hydrothermal method using inorganic materials, and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra and transient photocurrent response curve for the phase composition and optical property.Taking rhodamine B (RhB) as the target pollutant, the photocatalytic activity and stability of photocatalysts were studied under visible light irradiation.Furthermore, the mechanism in the process of photocatalytic degradation was discussed by electron spin resonance spectroscopy analysis and the trapping experiment of generated radicals.The results show that BiOI/BiOBr composite photocatalyst prepared by hydrothermal method using inorganic materials own high purity and excellent crystallization performance.Composited by BiOI, BiOBr exhibits higher photocatalytic activity considerably by reducing the rate of electron-hole recombination and broadening the range of visible-light response.Among the prepared composites with various BiOI contents, 8% BiOI/BiOBr exhibits the best efficiency in the degradation of RhB.After irradiation for 21 min, the degradation rate of RhB is 100%, which is 1.5 times of pure BiOBr.After 5 times recycle, it also shows high photocatalytic activity.The results also suggest that holes and ·O-2 are the main reactive species in the photocatalytic process of the RhB degradation.

Abstract:Bismuth-based compounds have been regarded as an important class of visible-light photocatalysts due to their special electronic structures. In this paper, iodide ions are introduced to modify bismuth-based compound, Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 , forming a Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 /BiOI heterojunction structure. A significant enhancement of photocatalytic activity compared to the parent compounds is observed in de-coloration of rhodamine B（Rh.B） solution. The improved photocatalytic property of Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 /BiOI heterojunction is ascribed to the unique electronic structure consisting of complementary band structures of BiOI and Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 .Iodide ions are regarded as an effective reagent to construct bismuth-based photocatalytic heterojunctions with improved photocatalytic activity.
Synthesis of Cs3PMo12O40/Bi2O3 Composite with Highly Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity under Visible-Light Irradiation.

Abstract:A novel visible-light-active Cs3PMo12O40/Bi2O3 (CsPMo/Bi2O3) composite was prepared by a simple dissolution-precipitation method. The as-prepared samples were characterized by XRD, XPS, FT-IR, SEM, UV-Vis DRS, N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms and electrochemical analysis. The results revealed that Bi2O3 was successfully modified by trace CsPMo. After the addition of H3PMo12O40 acid (HPMo), the surface of Bi2O3 can be roughed. Subsequently, the presence of Cs2CO3 can neutralize the protons of HPMo forming CsPMo precipitate on Bi2O3. Comparing to naked Bi2O3 and CsPMo, the binary composite exhibited many beneficial characteristics in charge generation and separation, such as formation of p-n heterojunction, decreased band gap, enhanced photocurrent response and greatly reduced charge transfer resistance. The photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared samples were evaluated by the degradation of phenol under visible light. The calculated pseudo-first-order rate constants for phenol degradation were 2.7 and 14.8 times relative to that on Bi2O3 and CsPMo, respectively. Dramatically enhanced photocatalytic performance can be observed when the optimal CsPMo/Bi2O3 composite (2.5% CsPMo) was applied. The major active species involved in the degradation process are in the following order: superoxide radical (O-2(center dot-)) > hydroxyl radical ((OH)-O-center dot) approximate to hole (h(+)). Besides, the CsPMo/Bi2O3 composite also displayed good stability in cyclic experiments. (C) 2018 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Construction of p-n heterostructured semiconductor photocatalysts is of great attention. Herein, BiOI-TiO2p-n heterojunction photocatalysts with different molar ratios have been successfully synthesized by ultrasonic-assisted method. On the basis of the XPS analysis, Ti-O-Bi bonds are formed between BiOI nanosheets and TiO2nanoparticles rather than a simple overlap of single material. Compared to the pure BiOI and TiO2, the BiOI-TiO2p-n heterojunctions show prominently enhanced photocatalytic activity for degradation of methyl orange (MO) under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). Especially, 80% BiOI-TiO2possesses the highest photocatalytic reaction rate constant, which is 3.9 and 12.2 times higher than that of BiOI and TiO2, respectively. The superoxide radical species (•O2−) has been regarded as the predominant active species in the reaction process, confirmed by the trapping experiments and Electron spin resonance (ESR) results. In addition, efficient separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs rendered by the heterojunctions are proved employing photocurrent experiments, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and photoluminescence (PL). Moreover, the positions of the conduction bands (CB) and valence bands (VB) of the samples are investigated by Mott–Schottky measurements. It can be deduced that the existence of internal electric field caused by p-n junction leads to effective separation of electron hole pairs, resulting in the production of a large number of active species for the MO degradation.

Abstract:A novel hierarchical BiOI/Bi2MoO6 composites are prepared by a facile precipitation-deposition method. The prepared photocatalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). The resulting BiOI/Bi2MoO6 composites exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity and stability towards the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and bisphenol A (BPA) in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. The optimal composite with 25% BiOI content shows the highest photocatalytic activity for MB degradation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is mainly attributed to the formation of BiOI/Bi2MoO6 heterojunction that can facilitate the separation and transfer of the photo-generated charge carriers. The roles of active species in the photocatalytic process are discussed by using different types of active species scavengers. Meanwhile, combined with the photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the degradation mechanism of the photocatalysts is proposed. It is hoped that the work could provide valuable information on the design of specific structure materials with more excellent properties and set the foundation for the further industrial application. Abstract:The improvement of photocatalytic performance is limited by the reduction of carrier redox capacity. Effective design of micromorphology and heterostructure is expected to overcome this obstacle. 3D cross-linked Bi2O2SiO3-BiOM-Si2Bi24O40 (BSO-BOM, M∈Cl, Br, I) with lamellar porous and double heterostructure are prepared in situ by an environmentally friendly hydrothermal deposition method. The process parameters are continuously optimized by exploring the modification effect of the pore-forming agent SiO2 and different halides in the composite preparation. The introduction of SiO2 changes the morphology of BSO, and a more effective heterogeneous interface interaction can be obtained in BSO-BOM. The construction of 3D cross-linked BSO-BOM with lamellar porous structure makes BSO-BOB better for nanocrystallization, which reduces material agglomeration, shortens the physical distance of carrier migration to the surface, and has a more suitable band gap position. Thereby accelerating the migration and diffusion of h+ so that it directly reacts with rhodamine B (Rh B) to form CO2 and H2O. After adjustment, these photocatalysts can reach 81.98% (BSO-BOI, 150 min), 98% (BSO-BOC, 90 min) and 100% (BSO-BOB, 60 min) of Rh B degradation, respectively. This work provides a feasible strategy for morphology control and free radical modification of heterogeneous photocatalysts.

Abstract:As a visible-light-driven photocatalyst, BiOI has aroused considerable attention in light of its unique properties and promising application aspect in wastewater treatment. However, photocatalytic activity of BiOI needs to be further enhanced to meet the practical application owing to low redox capacity of carriers. In this work, BiOI was baked at the different temperature, and the catalysts were studied by various approaches. The corresponding catalytic performance was investigated by destruction of rhodamine B (RhB). The results demonstrate that BiOI can occur crystal transformation: BiOI→Bi 4 O 5 I 2 →Bi 5 O 7 I during the baking process, in-situ forming BiOI/Bi 4 O 5 I 2 and Bi 4 O 5 I 2 /Bi 5 O 7 I heterojunctions, inducing enrichen oxygen vacancies (OVs) and accelerating the formation of ·O 2 − . Photocatalytic activity measurement reveals that Bi 4 O 5 I 2 /Bi 5 O 7 I heterojunctions obtained from baking BiOI at 500 °C have the highest activity, which is 13-fold of that of the reference BiOI. This work paves way for in-situ construction of heterojunctions by phase transformation through baking.

Abstract:In this work, a bismuth metal-organic framework is used as a modifier to prepare a modified BiOI photocatalytic material (BBI-2), which is then characterized via X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In photocatalytic degradation tests, much higher photocatalytic activity is found for BBI-2 than for pure BiOI. After 75 min of visible-light irradiation, the degradation ratio of 10 mg/L rhodamine B by 100 mg/L BBI-2 can reach 97.14%. In addition, BBI-2 shows good performance in terms of pH applicability and circulation. Photoelectric analysis, free-radical analysis, and energy band analysis make clear that the improvement in the visible-light photocatalytic performance of BBI-2 is mainly due to the optimization of its morphology, size, specific surface area, energy band position, and the transmission and separation properties of photogenerated carriers. The active substances that play a significant role in the photocatalytic system are also determined. A study of biological effects finds that BBI-2 shows distinct photocatalytic antibacterial activity under visible-light irradiation, low cytotoxicity to human primary fibroblasts, and good compatibility with defibrinated rabbit blood.

Improving built-in electric fields for effective photocatalytic activity in rationally designed electron transfer pathway of TiO2@MoS2/Bi2S3

Abstract:The efficiency of photocatalytic activity relies on rationally controlling the rapid charge transfer channel and the interfacial electric field. In this article, a ternary TiO2@MoS2/Bi2S3 is proposed, in which TiO2 hierarchical microspheres are assembled with MoS2 nanosheets and Bi2S3 NPs. This assembly generates a substantial surface electrostatic potential difference at the interface, thereby strengthening the built-in electric field. The internal electric field intensity of TiO2@MoS2/Bi2S3 is 5.6 and 1.8 times greater than that detected in TiO2 and TiO2@MoS2, respectively. This considerable increase significantly speeds up the migration of out-of-plane electrons at the TiO2/MoS2 and MoS2/Bi2S3 interfaces. Driven by this enhanced field, TiO2@MoS2/Bi2S3 exhibits dramatically improved photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation, achieving 8.3 times and 2.7 times higher than that of pristine TiO2 and TiO2@MoS2 on the degradation rate of tetrachlorophenol (4-CP) respectively, along with 6% of incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE). In addition, mechanism investigation demonstrated Schottky barrier is established due to the Fermi level convergence and the bending of energy band, effectively inhibiting the electron backflow. Furthermore, DFT calculations and mechanism investigation revealed that the photo-induced electrons transfer route in the direction of MoS2 efficiently suppressed the electron-hole recombination process, ultimately facilitating the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This work provides the comprehensive understanding of the mechanism in depth for enhancing built-in electric field via formation of dual heterostructure, constituting a promising strategy to design photocatalysts for realizing high-efficiency photocatalytic activity. Construction of novel BiOIO3/MoS2 2D/2D heterostructures with enhanced photocatalytic activity

Abstract:A novel BiOIO3/MoS2 (BM-x) 2D/2D heterostructure was firstly constructed by hybridizing BiOIO3 with MoS2 through solvothermal process. The formation of BM-x 2D/2D heterostructure with higher specific surface area and larger interfaces can offer ample channel for the transmission of charge, confirmed by SEM, TEM, BET and EIS. Introduction of MoS2 could improve light harvesting abilities of BM-x composites, which was demonstrated by DRS. Moreover, a staggered type-Ⅱ heterojunction and built-in electric field between BiOIO3 and MoS2 were formed, facilitating the separation of photogenerated carriers, proven via transient photocurrent response and PL. The BM-x composites could be applied to the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). Above properties endow BM-x composites enhanced photocatalytic efficiencies for degradation of RhB than pure BiOIO3 under simulated solar-light irradiation, and the BM-1.0 composite showed the optimized degradation rate constant (0.04189 min−1), which is 5.2 times higher than that of pristine BiOIO3 (0.00811 min−1). Free radical scavenging experiments reveal that h+ and •O2 − are primarily responsible for the photocatalytic degradation of RhB in this system, and a possible type-Ⅱ heterojunction mechanism with dye sensitization was proposed.

Heterostructured Bismuth Molybdate Composite: Preparation and Improved Photocatalytic Activity under Visible-Light Irradiation

Abstract:A heterostructured photocatalyst containing the same Bi, Mo, and O elements (Bi(3.64)Mo(0.36)O(6.55)/Bi(2)MoO(6)) was realized by a facile hydrothermal method. The heterostructured composite was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, selected-area electron diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution electron microscopy. The Bi(3.64)Mo(0.36)O(6.55)/Bi(2)MoO(6) composite exhibited notable enhanced photocatalytic activity compared to Bi(2)MoO(6) or Bi(3.64)Mo(0.36)O(6.55) in the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B and phenol under visible-light irradiation. More interestingly, it is found that the heterostructured composite could mineralize organic substances into CO(2) efficiently. This study offered a clue for the design of an efficient photocatalyst in the application of environmental treatment.

Abstract:Constructing Z-scheme heterojunction to improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers of photocatalysts has gained extensive attention. In this work, we fabricated a novel Z-scheme MoO3/Bi2O4 heterojunction photocatalyst by a hydrothermal method. XPS analysis results indicated that strong interaction between MoO3 and Bi2O4 is generated, which contributes to charge transfer and separation of the photogenerated carriers. This was confirmed by photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests. The photocatalytic performance of the as-synthesized photocatalysts was evaluated by degrading rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation, showing that 15% MoO3/Bi2O4 (15-MB) composite exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity, which is 2 times higher than that of Bi2O4. Besides, the heterojunction photocatalyst can keep good photocatalytic activity and stability after five recycles. Trapping experiments demonstrated that the dominant active radicals in photocatalytic reactions are superoxide radical (•O2−) and holes (h+), indicating that the 15-MB composite is a Z-scheme photocatalyst. Finally, the mechanism of the Z-scheme MoO3/Bi2O4 composite for photo-degrading RhB in aqueous solution is proposed. This work provides a promising strategy for designing Bi-based Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for highly efficient removal of environmental pollutants.

Abstract:A visible-light-sensitive Bi2MoO6-BiOCl heterojunction photocatalyst was synthesized via a hydrothermal process. The as-prepared Bi2MoO6-BiOCl composite shows an irregular multi-plate structure with length ranging from 100 nm to 1 mm, indicating a possibility of the plate-on-plate structure by placing Bi2MoO6 and BiOCl nanoplates over each other. The Bi2MoO6-BiOCl photocatalyst not only had a good visible-light photocatalytic performance, but also exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than pure BiOCl and Bi2MoO6. The optimal Bi2MoO6 content for the photocatalytic activity of the Bi2MoO6-BiOCl composites is 30%. Compared to pure Bi2MoO6 the photoactivity of the Bi2MoO6-BiOCl composites is almost 2.0 times higher for the RhB photodegradation, and 1.5 times higher for the phenol photodegradation under visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic mechanism was elucidated via active species trapping experiments and ESR. The (OH)-O-center dot and O-center dot(2)- played the key roles in the degradation of RhB via the Bi2MoO6-BiOCl composite. Finally, the possible charge transfer mechanism of the enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity was proposed.

Abstract:Novel carbon quantum dot (CQD)-modified BiOI photocatalysts were prepared via a facile hydrothermal process. The CQD-modified BiOI materials were characterized by multiple techniques. The CQD with an average size around several nanometers was distributed on the surface of BiOI microsphere. Its photocatalytic activity was investigated sufficiently by the photodegradation of methylene orange (MO). The results showed that the CQD/BiOI 1.5 wt.% sample exhibited the optimum photocatalytic activity, which was 2.5 times that of the pure BiOI. This improvement was attributed to the crucial role of CQDs, which could be acted as a photocenter for absorbing solar light, charge separation center for suppressing charge recombination.

Abstract:BiOI/Bi2WO6 photocatalysts with various BiOI amounts were prepared by a simple deposition method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) and low temperature nitrogen adsorption. The photocatalytic performance of BiOI/Bi2WO6 catalysts was evaluated using the photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) and phenol in an aqueous solution under UV and visible light irradiation. The results indicate that compared with commercial Degussa P25 and pure Bi2WO6, the 13.2% BiOI/Bi2WO6 photocatalyst shows much higher UV and visible light photocatalytic performance. The obviously increased photocatalytic activity could be mainly attributed to the effective transfer of the photogenerated electrons and holes at the interface of Bi2WO6 and BiOI, which reduces the recombination of electron-hole pairs. A transfer process of photogenerated carriers is proposed based on the band structures of BiOI and Bi2WO6. Radical scavengers experiments demonstrate that center dot OH, h(+), center dot O-2(-) and H2O2, especially h(+), together dominate the photodegradation process of MO and phenol.

Abstract:In this study, BiOI was fabricated via a solvothermal synthesis method. Based on characterization using XRD, BET, SEM, TEM and XPS, layered-structure BiOI with a pure orthorhombic phase and flower-like microsphere morphology was successfully prepared. Compared with P25 TiO2, BiOI had higher photocatalytic activity towards 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane (BPA) degradation under visible light irradiation. The results of photocurrent generation also proved that BiOI had excellent photocurrent response to visible light. Hence, the good photocatalytic performance of BiOI was attributed to its enhanced light absorption and separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. ESR measurements further confirmed that hydroxyl radicals were generated and involved in the BPA photodegradation process.
Facile Fabrication of BiOI Decorated NaNbO3 Cubes: A P–n Junction Photocatalyst with Improved Visible-Light Activity

Abstract:To enhance the separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers, a p-n junction photocatalyst BiOI/NaNbO3 has been fabricated by a facile method. The obtained samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, PL, N-2 sorption-desorption and DRS. DRS results showed that the light absorption edges of BiOI/NaNbO3 hybrids were red-shifted with the increase of BiOI content. The SEM and TEM images revealed that the BiOI was widely decorated over the surfaces of NaNbO3 cubes. The formation of p-n heterojunction at their interfaces was proved by the HRTEM image. The visible light-driven photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution. Compared with single NaNbO3 and BiOI, the BiOI/NaNbO3 hybrid photocatalysts have exhibited significantly enhanced activities. Meanwhile, the mass ratio of BiOI/NaNbO3 displayed important influence on the MB degradation. The hybrid photocatalyst with BiOI content of 40% performed the optimal activity. This activity enhancement should be attributed to the strong visible light absorption, the high migration and separation efficiency of photo-induced carriers. The photocurrent and PL measurements confirmed that the interfacial charge separation efficiency was greatly improved by coupling BiOI with NaNbO3. Controlled experiments proved that the degradation of pollutants was mainly attributed to the oxidizing ability of the generated holes (h(+)), center dot O-2(-), and center dot OH radicals. Abstract:The construction of p-n heterojunctions has become an effective way to develop high performance photocatalysts to remove pollutants from water. Herein, the BiOI/BiFeWO 6 composites abundant in oxygen vacancies (OVs) was rationally designed by combining calcination and solvothermal methods to remove different kinds of pollutants, including rhodamine B (RhB), tetracycline (TC), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The surface properties, structural characterizations and photocatalytic activity of BiOI/BiFeWO 6 were investigated. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) showed that the morphology of BiOI/BiFeWO 6 was BiFeWO 6 nanoparticles loaded on BiOI sheet structure. The formation of BiOI/BiFeWO 6 heterojunction was demonstrated by the shift of the peaks of Bi and I elements in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Moreover, the existence of OVs was confirmed by the O 1s spectrum and electron spin resonance (ESR). By comparison with neat BiOI and BiFeWO 6 , the BiOI/BiFeWO 6 composite showed excellent photocatalytic properties under visible light. The strategy that the p-n heterojunction and OVs work together opens up new avenues to fabricate future high-efficiency photocatalysts.
