Facet-engineered CeO<sub>2</sub>/graphene composites for enhanced NO<sub>2</sub>gas-sensing

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas sensors are pivotal in upholding environmental integrity and human health, necessitating heightened sensitivity and exceptional selectivity. Despite the prevalent use of metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) for NO2 detection, extant solutions exhibit shortcomings in meeting practical application criteria, specifically in response, selectivity, and operational temperatures. Here, we successfully employed a facile microwave-solvothermal method to synthesize a mesoporous CeO2/CNCs nanocomposite. This methodology entails the rapid and comprehensive dispersion of CeO2 nanoparticles onto helical carbon nanocoils (CNCs), resulting in augmented electronic conductivity and an abundance of active sites within the composite. Consequently, the gas-sensing sensitivity of the nanocomposite at room temperature experienced a notable enhancement. Moreover, the presence of cerium oxide and the conversion of Ce3+ and Ce4+ ions facilitated the generation of oxygen vacancies in the composites, thereby further amplifying the sensing performance. Experimental outcomes demonstrate that the nanocomposite exhibited an approximate 9-fold increase in response to 50 ppm NO2 in comparison to pure CNCs at room temperature. Additionally, the CeO2/CNCs sensor displayed remarkable selectivity towards NO2 when exposed to gases such as NH3, CO, SO2, CO2, and C2H5OH. This straightforward microwave-solvothermal method presents an appealing strategy for the research and development of intelligent sensors based on CNCs nanomaterials.

High-performance selective NO2 gas sensor based on In2O3–graphene–Cu nanocomposites

Abstract:The control of atmosphere content and concentration of specific gases are important tasks in many industrial processes, agriculture, environmental and medical applications. Thus there is a high demand to develop new advanced materials with enhanced gas sensing characteristics including high gas selectivity. Herein we report the result of a study on the synthesis, characterization, and investigation of gas sensing properties of In 2 O 3 –graphene–Cu composite nanomaterials for sensing elements of single-electrode semiconductor gas sensors. The nanocomposite has a closely interconnected and highly defective structure, which is characterized by high sensitivity to various oxidizing and reducing gases and selectivity to NO 2 . The In 2 O 3 -based materials were obtained by sol–gel method, by adding 0–6 wt% of pre-synthesized graphene–Cu powder into In-containing gel before xerogel formation. The graphene–Cu flakes played the role of centers for In 2 O 3 nucleation and then crystal growth terminators. This led to the formation of structural defects, influencing the surface energy state and concentration of free electrons. The concentration of defects increases with the increase of graphene–Cu content from 1 to 4 wt%, which also affects the gas-sensing properties of the nanocomposites. The sensors show a high sensing response to both oxidizing (NO 2 ) and reducing (acetone, ethanol, methane) gases at an optimal working heating current of 91–161 mA (280–510 °C). The sensor with nanocomposite with 4 wt% of graphene–Cu additive showed the highest sensitivity to NO 2 (46 ppm) in comparison with other tested gases with an absolute value of sensing response of (− ) 225 mV at a heating current of 131 mA (430 °C) and linear dependence of sensing response to NO 2 concentration.

Three-Dimensional Fe3O4@Reduced Graphene Oxide Heterojunctions for High-Performance Room-Temperature NO2 Sensors

Abstract:Metal oxide/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) heterojunctions have been widely used to fabricate room-temperature gas sensors due to large specific surface areas of RGO nanosheets and enhanced carrier separation efficiency at the interface. However, the sheet stacking of RGO nanosheets limits the full utilization of metal oxide/RGO heterojunctions. Herein, we demonstrate a high-performance room-temperature NO2 gas sensor based on 3D Fe3O4@RGO p-n heterojunctions with a core-shell structure, which were synthesized by self-assembly method and further reduction. The effects of different Fe3O4/RGO ratios and the relative humidity on the sensing performances have been investigated. The experimental results suggest that the 3D Fe3O4@RGO sensor exhibits a good selectivity and high sensitivity of 183.1% for 50 ppm NO2, which is about 8.17 times higher than that of the pure 2D RGO sensor. When exposed to 50 ppb of NO2, the response value still reaches 17.8%. This enhanced sensing performance is mainly ascribed to the formed heterojunctions and the larger surface area of RGO nanosheets. This 2D to 3D heterostructure strategy provides a general route to fabricating ultrahigh-performance room-temperature RGO-based gas sensors.

2D/2D {001}TiO2-/Ti3C2T composite with ultra-high sensing performance for NO2 at room temperature

Abstract:The remarkable electrical conductivity, abundance of surface functional groups, and large specific surface area make 2D MXenes-based heterostructures highly promising for room temperature gas sensing applications. However, these MXenes-based heterojunctions composed of different materials may suffer from issues, such as crystal incompatibility and bandgap mismatch. Herein, the {001}TiO2-x /Ti3C2T x composite was prepared in situ by hydrothermal process and subsequent annealing. The {001} facets of TiO2 and oxygen vacancies that provide a heightened exposure of active sites in the composite and more gas diffusion channels, as well as the formation of Schottky barriers between {001}TiO2 nanosheets and Ti3C2T x , can synergistically enhance the gas performance. The experimental results show that the {001}TiO2-x /Ti3C2T x composite exhibits 1.9 and 27.5 times higher than the {001}TiO2/Ti3C2T x composite and pristine Ti3C2T x to 10 ppm NO2 at room temperature, respectively. Moreover, the {001}TiO2-x /Ti3C2T x composite presents the great linear response (R2 = 0.99509), selectivity, repeatability and long-term stability to NO2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the strong interactions between the {001}TiO2-x /Ti3C2T x and NO2, indicating excellent sensitivity and selectivity of the composite material towards NO2. This work provides an effective way to construct a series of oxygen-defective Ti3C2T x -based composites with exposed high-energy facets for enhanced gas sensing performances.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) reduced graphene oxide (RGO) networks show potentials for highly sensitive gas sensors. However, many insulating materials are usually used during RGO assembly process, which inevitably hinder the electron transfer efficiency, and affect the gas sensing performance. In this work, 3D structures based on nanospheres of conducting polymer layer-bridged y-Fe2O3/RGO hybrids have been designed and demonstrated for NO2 sensing. Polyaniline (PANI), as a conducting polymer, can not only serve as self- assembly reagents to construct 3D hybrid structures, but also play an important role in participating electron transfer through forming p-n heterojunctions between interfaces of y-Fe2O3 and RGO. The manufactured yFe2O3@PANI@RGO sensors show a response as high as 911% when exposure to 50 ppm NO2, being over 124 times those of bare two-dimensional graphene sensors. In addition, excellent selectivity, stability, and low detectable concentration (100 ppb) to NO2 can be achieved for sensors based on this unique structure. It is suggested that the high performance can be ascribed to the formed 3D structures based on as-designed p-n heterojunctions and conjugation effect of PANI. The design strategy as well as constructed 3D RGO can provide a general route to fabricate high-performance gas sensors.
A stable and highly-sensitive flexible gas sensor based on Ceria (CeO2) nano-cube decorated rGO nanosheets for selective detection of NO2 at room temperature

Abstract:Sensing and monitoring nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas is essential, due to its adverse effect on humans and the environment. However, conventional NO2 gas-sensing materials have limitations like elevated temperature operations, lower response, and low selectivity. Herewith, ceria nano-cube decorated reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (CeO2@rGO) were synthesized by a hydrothermal process, and as-synthesized products were characterized by various methods, viz. XRD, FE-SEM, FTIR, Raman spectrometer, BET, and IV characteristics. Afterwards, CeO2@rGO flexible gas sensor was fabricated by drop-cast technique, which is utilized for real-time monitoring of NO2 at room temperature (RT) (24ºC). Notably, the CeO2@rGO-based sensor upholds a significantly high response of 52.84 % towards 70 ppm of NO2, with an ultrafast response and recovery time of 7 s and 58 s respectively, with the LOD of 1 ppm. In addition, the CeO2@rGO flexible gas sensor exhibited long-term stability up to 30 days, solid repeatability, and stability in high relative humidity (RH) conditions. The marvelous sensing characteristics of the CeO2@rGO were attributed to the synergetic effect between CeO2 and rGO. The mechanism of sensing response was exhaustively interpreted by the “surface electron depletion layer mechanism”. Certainly, the scientific investigation conducted in the present study will undeniably advance the possible uses of detecting NO2 at RT.

Abstract:A recent progress in new emerging two-dimensional（2 D） materials has provided promising opportunity for gas sensing in ultra-low detectable concentration.In this work,we have demonstrated a flexible NO 2 gas sensor with porous structure graphene on polyethylene terephthalate substrates operating at room temperature.The gas sensor exhibited good performance with response of 1.2%and a fast response time within 30 s after exposure to50 × 10 -9 NO 2 gas.As porous structure of graphene increased the surface area,the sensor showed high sensitivity of ppb level for NO 2 detection.Au nanoparticles were decorated on the surface of the porous structure graphene skeleton,resulting in an incensement of response compared with pristine graphene.Au nanoparticles-decorated graphene exhibits not only better sensitivity（1.5-1.6 times larger than pristine graphene） for NO 2 gas detection,but also fast response.The sensor was found to be robust and sensitive under the cycling bending test,which could also be ascribed to the merits of graphene.This porous structure graphene-based gas sensor is expected to enable a simple and inexpensive flexible gas sensing platform.
Zn mixed CeO2 nanoparticles: Enhancement of NO2 gas sensing performance

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is highly noxious and detrimental to both human health and the natural environment, making it imperative to create a sensor capable of detecting NO2 gas. In this paper, we demonstrate the fabrication of zinc mixed cerium oxide (CZ) nanoparticles (NPs) sensor using a simple chemical route. The compositional, structural, morphological, and gas sensing characteristics of prepared Zn mixed CeO2 (CZ) NPs (with Zn content ranging from 1to 5 wt%) were investigated by various characterization techniques. The as-prepared Zn mixed CeO2 NPs (CZ) exhibited cubic crystal structure. The CeO2 nanoparticles mixed with 5 wt% Zn (CZ5 NPs) exhibited a larger surface area of m58.90 m2/g. The Zn (5 wt%) mixed CeO2 nanoparticles sensor achieved a remarkable maximum sensing response of 91.31% to 100 ppm and 5.53% to 1 ppm NO2 at a working temperature of 150 °C. The sensor demonstrated excellent reproducibility, with a rapid response time of 14.20 seconds and a recovery time of 350.65 seconds, along with notable stability at 89.80%. The remarkable response of porous Zn (5 wt%) mixed CeO2 NPs to NO2 can be attributed to their unique porous structure and the synergistic effect of Zn and CeO2, which together provide a substantial specific surface area, along with the presence of oxygen vacancies within the sensing material. Impedance and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to explore the potential NO2 sensing mechanism of the Zn (5 wt%) mixed CeO2 sensor.

Enhancing Room-Temperature NO2 Gas Sensing Performance Based on a Metal Phthalocyanine/graphene Quantum Dot Hybrid Material.

Abstract:Metal phthalocyanine (MPc) has a great saturation response value, but its low conductivity and slow response speed limit its practical application. A novel hybrid material composed of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and metal phthalocyanine derivatives has been obtained. GQDs can be anchored onto the surface of MPc nanofibers through π-π stacking. The response to NO2 can be significantly enhanced under certain component proportion matching, which is much better than their respective response to NO2. The introduction of GQDs greatly increases the conductivity of phthalocyanine fibers, leading to a faster response of the hybrid material. In addition, the reproducibility, selectivity and stability of the hybrid materials are excellent, and the minimum response concentration can reach 50 ppb. Ultra-low-power laser irradiation was used to solve the problem of slow recovery of metal phthalocyanine. Overall, we present the advantages of combining MPc nanofibers with GQDs and pave a new avenue for the application of MPc-GQD hybrids in the gas sensing field.
Interface engineering of a highly sensitive porous CuO modified rGO layers for room temperature NO 2 gas sensor

Abstract:The process of combusting non-renewable energy sources results in the emission of a variety of harmful gases into the environment. As a result, there is a continuing need for a high-sensitivity gas sensor capable of promptly identifying these gases at room temperature (RT). Herein, we developed a high-sensitive CuO/rGO heterostructures sensor for NO2 gas detection at RT (30 °C) with enhanced sensitivity and short response rate. Interestingly, the developed CuO/rGO (CR10) sample illustrated an incredibly high sensitivity of 1004% against 5 ppm NO2 gas with an extremely rapid response rate of 9 s at RT. The developed CR10 sensor exhibits a 5.17 times ameliorated sensing response against 5 ppm of NO2 gas in contrast to the pristine CuO (CR0) sensor. The developed NO2 sensor also exhibits high selectivity, long-term stability (30 days), good linearity, and impressive repeatability. The synergistic interaction between CuO and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) are primary reason for the enrichment of the sensing performance. In particular, a thin layer of rGO arranged over CuO porous nanosheets and the enormous surface area of CuO/rGO could serve as additional available adsorption centres for NO2 gas and increase the speed of redox reaction on the CuO/rGO sensor surface, resulting in an extremely high sensing response. Furthermore, the rGO thin layer exhibits exceptional carrier transfer capabilities that can be utilized as ultra-responsive conductive channels, thereby enhancing the sensing response significantly. Besides, a significant amount of chemisorbed oxygen species are also relatively favourable for the sensing performance. This study opens up a novel avenue to develop a high-performance NO2 sensors at RT.

W18O49 Nanofibers Functionalized with Graphene as a Selective Sensing of NO2 Gas at Room Temperature

Abstract:Recent trends in two-dimensional (2D) graphene have demonstrated significant potential for gas-sensing applications with significantly enhanced sensitivity even at room temperature. Herein, this study presents fabrication of distinctive gas sensor based on one-dimensional (1D) W18O49 nanofibers decorated 2D graphene, specifically coated on copper (Cu)-based interdigitated electrodes formed by DC sputtering, which can selectively detect NO2 gas at room temperature. The sensor device fabricated using W18O49/Gr1.5% (i.e., W18O49 nanofibers hybrid nanocomposite with 1.5 wt % graphene) displays excellent overall sensing performance at 27 °C (room temperature) with high response (∼150-160 times) to NO2 gas. The W18O49/Gr1.5%-based sensor device reflects the highly selective detection toward NO2 gas among various gases with quick response time of 3 s and speedy recovery in 6 s. The limit of detection of ∼0.3 ppm with excellent reproducibility and stability for 3 months in all weather conditions (tested in humidity conditions 20-97%) are superior features of the device under test. However, W18O49/Gr3% displayed higher selectivity for NO2 but resulted with comparatively reduced sensitivity than W18O49/Gr1.5% sensor. The enhanced sensing performance could be attributed to the graphene content to decorate the nanofibers on it, oxygen vacancies/defects, and the contacts between the sensing material and Cu. This favorable synthesis and properties of self-assembled hybrid composite materials provide a potential utilization for detecting NO2 gas in environmental safety inspection.

Abstract:Cerium-doped tricobalt tetroxide (Ce-Co 3 O 4 ) has been successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal route. The structural, morphological, and elemental compositions of prepared samples with their corresponding chemical states were analyzed by employing X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning microscopy (FE-SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) respectively. The gas sensing measurement of the prepared samples reveals the superior gas sensing performance of 1 at.% Ce-doped Co 3 O 4 microflowers with an excellent response of 35% toward 50 ppm of NO 2 at near room temperature of 50 °C. The proposed sensor exhibits outstanding stability of 99% over a period of a month. The repeatability of the sensor for five consecutive cycles reveals the ability of the proposed sensor for the potential NO 2 sensing application. Moreover, the limit of detection (LoD) of the sensor is found to be as low as 4500 ppb. The reason behind the enhanced sensing performance of the fabricated sensor and the possible mechanism has been discussed in the present study.

SnO2 Nanoparticles Incorporated CuO Nanopetals on Graphene for High-Performance Room-Temperature NO2 Sensor

Abstract:Metal oxide semiconductors (MOS)-based sensor are promising for monitoring hazardous NO2. However, the high operating temperature (e.g., 100-400 degrees C) significantly restricts practical applications. Herein a high-performance room-temperature NO2 sensor based on binary MOS and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is demonstrated. Response of SnO2-CuO/rGO towards 50 ppm NO2 is 8-15 times higher than those of CuO/rGO and SnO2/rGO counterparts. Meanwhile, good selectivity (6 times higher response over other inorganic gases), long-term stability (decay < 5% for 7 days) and low limit of detection (150 ppb) are achieved, which can be interpreted by the p-n heterostructure and synergistic effect.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets show great potential for gas sensing, but they can hinder the penetration of gas molecules and lead to deteriorated sensing performances. Hence, construction of 2D nanosheet-based gas sensing materials with unique structures is desirable for high-performance gas sensing. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) binary nanosheet heterostructure based on 3D cobalt sulfide (CoS) nanoflower/graphene nanosheet hybrid was constructed for room-temperature NO2 gas sensing. The 3D CoS/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hybrid derived from a mixture of Co3O4 nanoflowers and graphene oxide nanosheets was facilely formed via in-situ sulfidation and reduction processes. The resistance response of as-assembled gas sensor based on 3D CoS nanoflower/graphene nanosheet hybrid to 1 ppm NO2 was 39.7%, which was 4.2 and 3.1 times higher than that of CoS and rGO sensors, respectively. A response as high as 10.5% was achieved even when the device was exposed to NO2 gas with a low concentration of 50 ppb. Furthermore, the hybrid device exhibited linear response characteristic, high selectivity, good repeatability, as well as long-term stability. Overall, the proposed design strategy together with the as-constructed structures can pave the way for the development of high-performance gas sensors based on graphene hybrids.

Abstract:Here we demonstrate high-performance room-temperature NO sensors based on ultrathin ZnO nanorods/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) mesoporous nanocomposites. Ultrathin ZnO nanorods were loaded on rGO nanosheets by a facile two-step additive-free solution synthesis involving anchored seeding followed by oriented growth. The ZnO nanorod diameters were simply controlled by the seed diameters associated with the spatial confinement effects of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. Compared to the solely ZnO nanorods and rGO-based sensors, the optimal sensor based on ultrathin ZnO nanorods/rGO nanocomposites exhibited higher sensitivity and quicker p-type response to parts per million level of NO at room temperature, and the sensitivity to 1 ppm of NO was 119% with the response and recovery time being 75 and 132 s. Moreover, the sensor exhibited full reversibility, excellent selectivity, and a low detection limit (50 ppb) to NO at room temperature. In addition to the high transport capability of rGO as well as excellent NO adsorption ability derived from ultrathin ZnO nanorods and mesoporous structures, the superior sensing performance of the nanocomposites was attributed to the synergetic effect of ZnO and rGO, which was realized by the electron transfer across the ZnO-rGO interfaces through band energy alignment.

Abstract:Here, we demonstrate an improvement in sensitivity toward the NO2 analyte by varying the width ratio of adjacent graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) layers using the GO laser reduction technique. We evaluated changes brought by laser reduction in material morphology, structure, electrical characteristics, and sensing performance depending on the GO/rGO ratio, which we supported by density functional theory calculations. Our results indicate that the reduction of GO yields the appearance of a chemiresistive response to NO2. An optimum GO/rGO width ratio ensures high conductivity paired with good sorption capacity, allowing to achieve chemiresistive response of 18.1% toward 100 ppm of NO2 at 25 ± 1 °C and a limit of detection of 230 ppb. The improved chemiresistive response of GO/rGO sensors upon NO2 physisorption is due to an increase in sorption energy and improved charge transfer in the presence of NO2 at the sites corresponding to the individual epoxy and hydroxyl groups at the GO/rGO interface area when compared to fully reduced GO.

Abstract:Here, we demonstrate room temperature NO 2 sensors based on ZnO/rGO nanocomposites by a facile hydrothermal method. The ZnO nanoparticles (20 ~ 50 nm) were wrapped by film-like rGO with different contents (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 wt %). They all exhibit p-type sensing toward NO 2 at room temperature. The content of rGO shows an obvious effect on the sensing properties. The ZnO NPs-1% rGO has a high response of 5.21 to 10 ppm NO 2 with a response/recovery time of 198/144 s. The sensing mechanism is discussed. The gas-sensitive properties are derived from the strong synergistic effect between the smaller particles of ZnO and rGO.

Abstract:NO2 sensing devices derived from three-dimensional (3D) nanotube graphene (NTG) and ZnO nanosphere nanocomposite are proposed for room temperature (RT) operation. The nickel nanowires were grown chemically, then graphene was grown onto the obtained nickel nanowires via chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The 3D NTG was then prepared through etching the nickel nanowires, while synthesis of the NTG/ZnO composite was achieved via the hydrothermal method. The sensing performance of these NTG and NTG/ZnO gas sensors to NO2 was systematically investigated. The NTG gas sensor responded with a 22.5% change upon being exposed to 50 ppm of NO2, while the response of the NTG/ZnO device reached 47.8% when exposed to the same NO2 concentration. Furthermore, these devices were also capable of detecting concentrations of NO2 as low as 100 ppb. In addition, NTG and NTG/ZnO gas sensors were found to have good selectivity and repeatability. According to the analysis of the sensing mechanism for the NTG/ZnO composite, the high response of the sensing device is attributed to the heterostructure between NTG and ZnO. When the device is exposed to air and NO2, the barrier changes significantly, thus causing a change of resistance.
