In this work, we investigate seismic anisotropy of the Longmaxi Shale Formation in the Southwest of China by forward modeling for the calibration of well and seismic data and seismic inversion for the evaluation of spatial distributions of microcracks-related anisotropy. In the forward modeling, the Backus average method is used for upscaling and the anisotropic propagator matrix method is employed to calculate seismic responses for the upscaled model. The modeling method maintains dynamic features of seismic reflections which is especially appropriate for heterogeneous and anisotropic shales. Analysis based on the Ruger's theory indicates that the P-wave anisotropy mainly affects reflections at high incidence angles. We develop a seismic inversion method based on the Ruger's theory to compute the distributions of velocities and VTI (transverse isotropy with a vertical symmetric axis) anisotropy parameters of the target shale interval. Then we obtain the thickness of the target shale and crack density of horizontal micro-cracks in the shale using rock physics inversion results. The seismic-inverted layer thickness, P-wave anisotropy parameter and crack density are consistent with those measured and computed in the borehole, which justify the applicability of the proposed method. The computed properties can be used for the identification of sweet spots in shale reservoirs.
