The long lasting extension has shaped the continental margins of the SCS and resulted in a progressive breakup of the lithosphere. Separated blocks and rift troughs, as controlled by tectonic stretching, contains key information about deforming mechanism of the crust and evolution from continent to ocean. In this work, we present the P-wave velocity model of a wide-angle seismic profile OBS2013-1 which passes through the NW margin of the SCS. Modeling of 25 ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) data revealed a detailed crustal structure and shallow complexities along the profile. The crust thins symmetrically across the Xisha Trough, from more than ~20 km on flanks to ~10 km in central valley where the sedimentary cover thickens over 5 km; A volcano is situated on top of the centre basement high where the Moho drops slightly. At the distal margin around the Zhongsha Trough, the upper crust was detached and accordingly made the middle crust exhumed in a narrow area (~20 km wide). Meanwhile, the lower crust rises asymmetrically and has been mixed possibly by upper mantle melting, which increased the seismic velocity and gave rise to volcanisms along the hanging side. A ~40 km wide hyper-stretched crust (~5 km) was identified next to the Zhongsha Trough and covered by overflowing magma and post-rift sediments on the top. These observations, together with previous velocity models in adjacent areas and the fault distribution mapped from gravity analysis, argue for a multistage evolution of the margin, including (1) an early stage of rifting in NW direction which formed NE trend structural lineaments e.g. the detachment faults, the Qiongdongnan basin and the Zhongsha Trough, (2) a second stage rifting in nearly N-S direction which formed EW trend hyper-stretched crust. The region with highly thinned crust can be considered as future OCT like the ones identified in the southwest sub-basin which opened during the last evolution stage.
