Abstract:Regional persistent rainfalls, one of the high-impact weather extremes in China, can cause mud slides in maintain regions and floods in plains. Tornadoes, which occur frequently in the central United States and eastern China, are also weather extremes during the warm season.

General characteristics of the convection weather processes over Jianghuai and Huanghuai region

Abstract:There is a high frequency of severe convective weather occurring in Jianghuai and Huanghuai region of China.Based on the conventional observation data and NCEP reanalysis data from 2010 to 2012(April to October), the spatial distributions and the temporal variability,the typical synoptic weather environments and the statistical characteristics of key parameters of 418 convective events over Jianghuai and Huanghuai region(30°N-37°N,110°E-122°E)are investigated.Results show that severe convective events mainly occur from June to September with a single-peak in August.Three areas are identified as high frequency of occurrence of severe convective events.The most favorable area of the severe convective events is the plain of East China with an occurrence frequency of 35. 3%.The other two areas are around Dabie Mountain and Huangshan Mountain and near the southern boundary of Tai Mountain,respectively.Their diurnal variations show a major peak in the late afternoon(15:00-21:00,LST) and a second peak in the morning(06:00-09:00,LST).The largest frequency region of severe convections occurs shifts gradually from the northwest to the southeast in Jianghuai and Huanghuai region from morning to evening. The related environmental conditions are classified into four major groups based on their 500 hPa synoptic weather maps:Trough(TR,284 cases),subtropical high(STH,101 cases),cold vortex(CV,16 cases),tropical cyclone (TC,17 cases).The composite of rawinsonde analyses show that the TC pattern features the largest moisture in the troposphere while the STH is associated with rich moisture in the lower layer.The TR has moderate moisture whereas the CV is the driest with the lowest lifting condensation level pressure(LCLP)comparatively.From the condition of instability point of view,the STH has the largest unstable condition while the TR is moderate and the CV has the lowest unstable condition comparatively.Compared to the previous studies,the severe convection weather processes in the area investigated in the current study tend to form in a moister environment and with a background of comparable moderate unstability.
Two Distinct Evolutions of Extreme Precipitation over Central Eastern China During June and July

Abstract:Previous studies have documented the occurrence of extreme precipitation in fixed regions and the associated atmospheric circulation patterns. Present study reveals that extreme precipitation over central eastern China can be stationary, move northward and southward during June and July and investigates atmospheric circulation patterns leading to distinct southward and northward movement of extreme precipitation. It is found that the distinct movement of extreme precipitation follows closely the movement of lower-level convergent winds and mid-level ascending motion. Further analysis shows that the two types of evolutions of extreme precipitation are results of a combined effect of the mid-latitude East Asian trough/ridge, the western North Pacific subtropical high and the South Asian high. When the mid-latitude atmospheric circulation displays a large zonal variation with a deep trough over East Asia, the lower-level wind convergence moves southward, leading to southward move of extreme precipitation region over central eastern China. When the mid-latitude atmospheric circulation is dominantly zonal over East Asia and the western North Pacific subtropical high extends westward and the South Asian high extends eastward, the lower-level wind convergence moves northward, followed by northward moving extreme precipitation region. The present result has implication for forecasting the movement of extreme precipitation over central eastern China.
Capability of regional-scale transient wind anomalies to indicate regional heavy rains

Abstract:The observational atmospheric airflow can be physically interpreted as the combination of climatic airflow, planetary-scale zonal-mean wind anomalies and regional-scale wind anomalies. The regional-scale wind anomalies in lower atmosphere, such as shear lines, southern cyclones, northern cyclones, cold frontal troughs, warm shear lines with vortex in southwestern China, tropical cyclones, shear lines in inverted troughs and easterly waves, can indicate regional heavy rains. These circulation systems in wind anomalies agree with principles of synoptic analysis better than actual wind observations. The heavy rainfall bands in China are mainly the result of confrontation between airflows from both sides of convergence line in anomalous wind fields. Rainfall bands in actual observations are located to the left of low level jets because the climatic airflow and zonal-mean wind anomalies masked or weakened the role of regional-scale wind anomalies. For heavy rainfall caused by shear lines, almost 99% cases can be diagnosed with regional-scale wind anomalies. By comparison, only 66% cases can be indicated by actual observational airflows.
A Case Study on the Rainstorm‐Producing Mesoscale Vortices in Central‐Eastern China

Abstract:Abstract During 26–27 June 2022, mainly influenced by three mesoscale vortices, central‐eastern China (particularly for Henan and Shandong) experiences the first widespread torrential rainfall event of the 2022 flood season (maximum 24‐hr accumulated precipitation is ∼380.9 mm), resulting in severe social impacts. The three mesoscale vortices form and sustain under favorable background conditions, mainly including a strong upper‐level divergence, an intense middle‐level warm advection, and a powerful lower‐level convergence associated with a low‐level jet. Among the vortices, the vortex which forms over Shandong, lasts for ∼9 hr, and makes a much larger contribution than the other vortices to the accumulated precipitation, is defined as the primary vortex. More than a half of the hourly precipitation peaks in this event appear in the life span of the primary vortex, which is closely related to the variations of the vortex in its cyclonic‐vorticity and vertical extent. Backward trajectory analysis indicates that air particles originating from the lower troposphere southwest of the primary vortex contribute the most to its formation (∼82.7%). These air particles mainly experience a notable increase in their cyclonic‐vorticity due to convergence‐related vertical stretching, which directly renders the formation of primary vortex. During the whole life span of the primary vortex, convergence‐related vertical stretching is the most favorable factor for its development/sustainment, and the convection‐related vertical transport of cyclonic vorticity ranks second; whereas, the horizontal transport is the most detrimental factor. Moisture budget shows that Southeast China is the most important moisture source for this event (accounting for ∼48.9%).

Abstract:An extreme rainfall event occurred over Hangzhou, China, during the afternoon hours on 24 June 2013. This event occurred under suitable synoptic conditions and the maximum 4-h cumulative rainfall amount was over 150 mm. This rainfall event had two major rainbands. One was caused by a quasi-stationary convective line, and the other by a back-building convective line related to the interaction of the outflow boundary from the first rainband and an existing low-level mesoscale convergence line associated with a mei-yu frontal system. The rainfall event lasted 4 h, while the back-building process occurred in 2 h when the extreme rainfall center formed. So far, few studies have examined the back-building processes in the mei-yu season that are caused by the interaction of a mesoscale convergence line and a convective cold pool. The two rainbands are successfully reproduced by the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with four-level, two-way interactive nesting. In the model, new cells repeatedly occur at the west side of older cells, and the back-building process occurs in an environment with large CAPE, a low LFC, and plenty of water vapor. Outflows from older cells enhance the low-level convergence that forces new cells. High precipitation efficiency of the back-building training cells leads to accumulated precipitation of over 150 mm. Sensitivity experiments without evaporation of rainwater show that the convective cold pool plays an important role in the organization of the back-building process in the current extreme precipitation case.

Abstract:Based on hourly precipitation data from 2413 national ground observation stations in China and ERA5 (0.25° × 0.25°), this study analyzes the characteristics and causes of extreme rainfall and snow in northeast China from 17–19 November 2020. The results show that extreme precipitation is mainly attributed to the abnormally strong large-scale low vortex and ground cyclone. The significant high-level and low-level coupling in areas with strong rain and snow is conducive to the continuous upward motion, which provides favorable dynamic conditions for the generation and development of extreme precipitation. The frontogenesis effect below the 850 hPa level is obvious, and the extreme precipitation period corresponds to the meeting of the north and south front areas. The symmetrical unstable atmosphere of 925 hPa~700 hPa is forced by the frontogenesis, which strengthens the oblique rising of the low layer and increases the instability, leading to the strengthened development of precipitation. For heavy rainfall and snow in early winter in China, water vapor transport is crucial. The extremely strong low-level jet also provides extremely strong water vapor conditions for the occurrence of heavy rain and snow. The analysis of the extreme rain and snow characteristics and formation mechanism of this weather process can deepen the understanding of extreme weather processes, and provide a useful reference for the research and prediction of extreme precipitation processes.

Mechanisms of Short-Duration Heavy Rainfall in the Western Pacific Subtropical High Area: An Analysis of Two Rainstorms of 2018 in Hunan Province, China

Abstract:This study examines two short-duration heavy rainfall cases of 2018 in Hunan province, China, using observations and the NCEP FNL analyses. Short-duration heavy rainfall occurring in the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) area is one of the major natural hazards during spring and summer over the middle reaches of the Yangtze River basin. Rainstorms in the two cases selected showed high echo-top height but low storm centroid elevation, resembling the "low-echo centroid" structure. Weak vertical shear was observed in the mid-lower troposphere, thereby leading to a short life cycle of storms. Before the heavy rainfall events, in addition to substantial changes in convective available potential energy (CAPE) and convective inhibition (CIN), both cases were characterized by a lack of troughs and jet streams in the middle and upper troposphere over the middle reaches of the Yangtze River basin. A proper configuration of the WPSH extending to the middle reaches of the Yangtze River basin along with low-level synoptic systems (e.g. a surface convergence line or the cold air invading) favoured moisture supply and lifting mechanisms for convection and the rainstorms. During the hot afternoon hours, the thermals forming at the surface further enhanced convection and the rainstorms.

Impact of the Inhomogeneous Characteristics of Temperature Variation on the Extreme Precipitation Events

Abstract:Global temperature variations have inhomogeneous characteristics, and the temperature gradient in land is larger than that is in ocean. The results show that the longitudinal and latitudinal temperature gradients have significant interdecadal characteristic, and its abrupt climate change occurring in 1980.The significant inhomogeneous is over the boundary of land and ocean, and the eastern China is one of key areas of the longitudinal and latitudinal temperature gradient which according to the abnormality of the extreme precipitation events. When the more extreme precipitation amount and number of days, latitudinal temperature gradient over eastern China is larger, and the longitudinal temperature gradient over the South China Sea is smaller. When the interannual variability over the western Pacific Ocean is larger, and the interannual variability over the continent and eastern Pacific Ocean are smaller, the extreme precipitation events over the Yangtze-huaihe River Basin increase.
Drivers of Summer Extreme Precipitation Events over East China

Abstract:Extreme summer precipitation often associated with flash floods has devastating impact on the local economies and livelihood of millions of people over East China. Tracking down the drivers of those extreme events will help to understand their formation mechanisms and to improve forecasts. Here the synoptic patterns associated with summer extreme precipitation events over East China during 1961-2018 have been identified systematically and quantitatively using a circulation clustering method. The results show that regional events over East China are dominated by the Eastern Asian summer monsoon associated Meiyu front, landfalling tropical cyclones and low-pressure vortices. Most sub-regions have seen increasing trends of extreme rainfall events during the past 6 decades with comparable contributions from the two main drivers. There was a decreasing trend over the North China Plain driven by the low-level southeasterly winds.

Abstract:An extreme rainstorm occurred in southeastern Hami in Xinjiang, China, on July 31, 2018. The region experienced maximum accumulated precipitation of 110 mm over 12 h, causing a flood that killed 20 people and left eight missing. The present study uses multiple data sources in order to conduct an in‐depth analysis of this extreme rainfall event. Results show that the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) could directly impact the arid and semi‐arid areas under the certain circulation patters. During the heavy rainfall period, the 500 hPa WPSH was anomalously northerly; several mesoscale cloud clusters generated in front of the 700 hPa Hexi corridor jet stream and then merged and developed along the 500 hPa steering flow. The atmosphere was conditionally unstable over the region, and unstable convective energy was triggered by warm frontogenesis at the low Troposphere. Warm frontal frontogenesis was determined by the horizontal divergence and the tilt term during convective initiation, and deformation and tilt terms as convective cloud at matured. Additionally, the intensification of the 700 hPa Hexi corridor southeasterly jet and topographic uplifting were responsible for the long‐term persistence of the mesoscale convective system, which should be paid more attention by forecasters in the future forecasting of this region.

Abstract:Purpose of ReviewThere is concern that extreme weather events may become stronger, more frequent, or both as the climate changes. This paper seeks more clarity in defining different types of extreme storms, and the global distribution of each type.Recent FindingsDetailed case studies of specific events over the United States are revealing but the only way to document such occurrences globally is by using radar profiles from the GPM core satellite. Recent results differ somewhat depending on specific definitions and approaches, but they are starting to converge.SummaryWe demonstrate the global distribution of the ~ 1000 most extreme events of each type over a 5-year period and find that in addition to testing for extreme rain rates and extremely intense convection, we must also differentiate by size. Large rain areas containing extreme rates are exclusively oceanic, small rain areas often have extreme rates over land. The most intense convective cores are almost exclusively over land, regardless of size.

Temporal and Spatial Characteristics of Summer Extreme Precipitation in Eastern China and Possible Causalities

Abstract:In the past decades, with the increasing frequency of extreme weather and climate events, the world has suffered huge losses. Based on NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and China regional precipitation data provided by China Meteorological Administration, the extreme precipitation events in eastern China are defined by relative threshold method, and the temporal and spatial characteristics of summer extreme precipitation in eastern China from 1961 to 2016 are analyzed by empirical orthogonal function (EOF), and the reverse distribution of extreme precipitation in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and south China by Indian Ocean warm pool is revealed influence. The results show that the total amount and frequency of extreme precipitation in summer are concentrated in the Yangtze River Basin and south China. EOF1 decomposition of extreme precipitation reflects the interannual oscillation characteristics of reverse spatial distribution in the Yangtze River Basin and south China. The time series corresponding to EOF1 has significant interannual characteristics. The Pacific-Japan (PJ) teleconnection pattern is a circulation system that significantly affects the spatial-temporal pattern of extreme precipitation in southern China. When the PJ pattern is in the positive phase, the anticyclone controls the south China region, and restrains the convective activity, which results in the decrease of extreme precipitation. The anomalous southwest wind to the south of 30°N and the anomalous northerly wind to the north of 30°N converge in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Combining with the sufficient water vapor carried by the anomalous southwest airflow at the edge of anticyclone, it is more conducive to the formation of extreme precipitation. The east propagating Kelvin wave in the warm pool of the Indian Ocean is an important reason for the formation of the PJ pattern and finally the formation of extreme precipitation anomalies in China.
Synoptic Pattern and Severe Weather Associated with the Wide Convection over Southeast China During the Summer Monsoon Period

Abstract:Based on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation radar observations, wide con-vection (WC) is defi ned as contiguous convective echoes over 40 dBZ, accompanied with a near surface rainfall area exceeding 1000 km2. In Southeast China, the maximal occurrence frequency of WC takes place over the fl at land region in the central plain of East China during the summer monsoon period of 1998–2010. When WC occurs in this region, the 500-hPa atmospheric fi elds are categorized into three patterns by using an objective classifi cation method, i.e., the deep-trough-control (DTr) pattern, the subtropical-high-maintenance (STH) pattern, and the typhoon-eff ect (Typh) pattern, which respectively accounts for 20.8%, 52.8%, and 26.4%of the total WC occurrences. The DTr pattern starts to emerge the earliest (16–31 May) and occurs the most often in the second half of June;the STH pattern has a signifi cant occurrence peak in the fi rst half of July;the Typh pattern occurs mostly in July and August. Nearly all WC occurrences in this region are associated with thunderstorms, due to large convective available potential energy and abundant moisture. Among the three synoptic patterns, the DTr pattern features the driest and coldest air in the region, leading to the least occurrences of short-duration heavy rainfall. Strong winds occur the most often under the DTr pattern, probably owing to the largest diff erence in air humidity between the mid and low troposphere. Hail at the surface is rare for all occurrences of WC, which is probably related to the humid environmental air under all weather patterns and the high (>5 km) freezing level under the STH pattern.
Anomalous synoptic environments of a strong convective process with tornado in Kaiyuan City, Liaoning Province

Abstract:On 3 July 2019, a severe convective weather process with heavy rainfall, hail and tornado happened on some areas in Liaoning Province. The tornado occurred in the Jingouzi Town, Kaiyuan City and caused the loss of life and property. This paper reveals the strong convective weather process including hails and a single tornado associated with some anomalous environments by using model forecast products, reanalysis atmospheric variables, satellite image and radar echoes. The results showed that the strong convective weather with a single tornado was located in a place of downward trough axis of geopotential height anomalies and a boundary line between cold-warm air masses of temperature anomalies near the surface. The spatial structure is similar to those tornadoes happened in northern Jiangsu but weaker than their counterparts in America. By using the ECMWF model products and the US NCEP/GFS real-time analyzed wind and combining with the local satellite image and radar echoes, the potential intensity and location of this strong convective weather can be predicted in advance.
Characteristics of the severe rain and its relation to flood and drought in the Changjiang and Huaihe areas in summer

Abstract:Flood due to severe rain is one of serious natural disasters in China,especially in the Changjiang and Huaihe areas(Jianghuai areas).In summer,severe rain is frequent in the Jianghuai areas.So the research on severe rain is a key issue investigated by meteorologists in China.Many previous studies more focused on analyses of severe rain on both synoptic scale and mesoscale,but few on the climatology.This paper gives the interannual and interdecadal characteristics distribution of severe rain for 1954—2004 and its relation to flood in the Jianghuai areas in summer.By use of the NCEP/NCAR monthly mean re-analysis wind data at 500 hPa and the rainfall data at 743 stations in China for 1954—2004,the climatic spatial distribution and interdecadal variation characteristics in the Jianghuai areas in summer are analyzed.The results show that severe rain in the Jianghuai areas is frequent in the local scope,and represents markedly regional difference and interdecadal variation characteristics,especially in the 1990s belonging to high value period of severe rain.By correlation and composite analysis,we find the severe rain relates closely to flood.In flood years,the mean percentage of the precipitation amount due to the severe rain to the total precipitation is about 50%,with greatly contributes to the flood in the 1990s.Furthermore,the wind background at 500 hPa due to interdecadal variation of severe rain is analyzed.The key factors which resulted in more severe rain in the 1990s are: 1.the anomaly anticyclone located over Mongolia,so the cold air at mid-high latitudes easily shifted to the south,and the anomaly northeast wind prerailed over the areas north to the Changjiang river in eastern China;2.owing to the western Pacific subtropical high enhanced,it strengthened the water vapor transportation to the north at low latitude sea.The anomaly southwest wind with abundant water vapor and anomaly northeast wind converged over the Jianghuai areas,because of representing markedly wind direction shearing,resulting in strong ascending motion,thus the severe precipitation easily occurred.
Characteristics and related mechanisms of the persistent extreme precipitation in August 2020 over Western China

Abstract:The persistent heavy precipitation that occurred in most of West China (WC) during August 11–18, 2020, generated the highest rainfall record since recording began in 1961 and was selected as one of the top 10 worst national natural disasters of 2020 in China. Favorable circulation was sustained during August; WC was positioned between two anomalous high-pressure centers over the Tibetan Plateau and Sea of Japan and an anomalous low-pressure center over Mongolia located on its north side, which created a stable and long trough and formed a low-pressure center over WC. At 200 hPa, the subtropical westerly jet was much stronger than average and southward, and the South Asian High (SAH) was strong and extended eastward to 150°E. At 500 hPa, the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) was westward and exceptionally strong, which helped abundant water vapor reach the southeastern part of WC and provided favorable dynamic and thermodynamic conditions for precipitation in this region. In addition, the eastward extension of the SAH promotes the westward extension of WPSH, which collectively enhanced the precipitation in WC. At 850 hPa, the low-level jet corresponding to the west-extending subtropical high from the Sea of Japan to WC further enhanced and guided the water vapor transport to WC. In addition, the Mei-Yu front over the Yangtze River Basin in June and July strengthened the northwestward spread of diabatic heating, transient energy, and wave activity fluxes, which likely influenced the large-scale circulation factors and reinforced the precipitation in WC in August 2020.

Anomaly-based versus full-field-based weather analysis on the extraordinary storm in Henan province in July 2021

Abstract:From 19 to 21 July 2021, the central northern Henan province had experienced life and property losses caused by locally record-breaking extraordinary rainfall and waterlogging, with the severest disaster in Zhengzhou, the capital city of Henan province. The precipitation in the three days extended nearly 300 km in length from the first day 400. 6 mm in Lushan to the second day 659. 7 mm in Zhengzhou, and the last day 777. 5 mm in Hebi. The hourly precipitation in a Zhengzhou station reached 201. 9 mm from 16 : 00 to 17 : 00 BJT on 20 July. Identifying and forecasting the system that generates extreme rainfall is a prerequisite to reducing the loss of life and property. This paper did anomaly-based versus full-field-based weather analysis based on the daily atmospheric observations and the ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) fine-grid model products on operational meteorological platforms. The results show that 1) the stable cloud cluster corresponding to the heavy rainfall in Henan is an easterly wave system formed on the south side when the northwest Pacific subtropical high is abnormally north in location and connected with a China mainland high; 2) On 20 July, Typhoon Chapaka near the coast of South China, Typhoon In-fa in the northwest Pacific, and the anomalous mesoscale low of strong ascending flow near Zhengzhou constituted three heavy precipitation systems that tied up nearby; 3) anomaly-based synoptic analysis was more effective in determining the location of extreme rainfall than full-field-based synoptic analysis of wind and specific humidity. The wind and specific humidity anomalies, and the moist vorticity anomalies (MVA) in the short-term forecast products of the ECMWF, have better guidance for operational extreme rainfall forecasts. Identifying the accuracy and stability of model products is essential to improve the skill of rainfall forecasting.
Similarities of Three Most Extreme Precipitation Events in North China

Abstract:In this study, three typical and most extreme precipitation events in the history of North China are analyzed and compared in terms of accumulated precipitation and synoptical circulation using surface station observations of China and the ERA5 dataset. The three events happened in August 1963 ("63.8" event, hereafter), August 1975 ("75.8" event), and July 2021 ("21.7" event), respectively, mainly in Hebei and Henan Provinces of North China. The results show that the maximum daily and 4-day accumulated precipitation of all three events exceeded 500 mm and 800 mm, with many stations' daily precipitation ranking Top 1. The "63.8" event persisted for the longest time, affected the largest area, and rained the most in 7 days (over 1000 mm). The "75.8" event was characterized by the most extreme daily precipitation and a concentrated area. All three events characterize a normal northward subtropical high that was located in North China and Northeast China. At 500 hPa, the area from South China to the South China Sea was dominated by a uniform pressure field. In the upper levels, there were troughs and divergence anomalies in all three events. In the low levels, there were anomalous low-level jets and the associated water vapor flux anomalies, which were located at different levels and came from different directions. Stable synoptical circulation and persistent jet and water vapor flux anomalies are the key factors in these extreme events.

Abstract:Atmospheric Rivers (ARs) have been extensively studied in connection with extreme precipitation events in East Asia, attributed to their robust water vapor transport. However, the distributional variability and extremity of local precipitation cannot be fully attributed to ARs. To assess the role of cloud microphysical processes in extreme precipitation, a case study was conducted on an event over the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region in China from July 10th to 12th 2021, focusing on convective cores (CCs) within deep convective systems (DCSs). Meteorological conditions related to convection organization were also examined. This study reveals a combined influence of atmospheric circulation and cloud microphysical processes on extreme precipitation within ARs in the BTH region. A strong correlation is observed between CC intensity (cloud top height, CTH) and hourly rain rate. The spatial distribution of meteorological variables (water vapor, vertical motion) aligns well with cloud properties in ARs. Cloud microphysical processes, including phase change, are influenced by various meteorological conditions and have counterproductive impact on them. Their combined effect favors convection and local rainfall. DCS intensity is influenced by moisture conditions (integrated water vapor convergence) and meteorological factors such as CAPE and vertical wind shear (VWS), ultimately impacting local rainfall development in ARs. This study underscores the importance of considering cloud microphysical processes within ARs when investigating local extreme precipitation in East Asia, in addition to the large-scale atmospheric circulation background.
Regional heavy rain locations associated with anomalous convergence lines in eastern China

Abstract:Spatial–temporal distribution and forecast skill of regional heavy rain (RHR) locations are important for disaster mitigation and saving lives and property. In China, daily RHR events are mainly concentrated in the eastern summer monsoon region. Daily site precipitation of 460 stations from 1960 to 2010 used in this analysis showed that there are inter-annual and decadal variability in site heavy rain (SHR) events with the yearly mean frequency of about 181 events. Maximal 218 SHR events occurred in 1983, while minimal 161 SHR events in 2004. The inter-annual and decadal variability in daily RHR events was detected from two to four adjacent stations, while a long-term increasing trend of daily RHR events was found from exceeding five adjacent stations. An approach of decomposing an atmospheric variable into a climatic field and a temporal anomaly is used to establish the relationship between daily RHR events and anomalous synoptic systems. Here, four cases and 21 case composite analyses showed that most daily RHR events are located along anomalous convergence lines and anomalous height troughs in the lower troposphere. This relationship suggested that anomaly-based synoptic chart should be applied in the practice of short-term and medium-range forecasts, by using the products of the current state-of-the-art operational numerical weather models.
