Abstract:Luminescence is one of the most important properties for metal nanoclusters; however, clearly revealing its origin remains challenging. The different luminescence properties of the two prototypical 8e nanoclusters Au 11 and Au 13 remain elusive—Au 11 is always nonluminescent, whereas Au 13 is luminescent. In this work, by using a designed unique aromatic ligand (quinoline-2-thiol), we obtained new atomically precise phosphine-thiolate-protected neutral Au 11 - SH and cationic Au 13 - SH . In comparison with the classic phosphine-halide-protected Au 11 - Cl and Au 13 - Cl , the Cl-to-thiol alteration triggered room-temperature luminescence of the Au 11 core and dramatically modulated that of the Au 13 core. Ultrafast ultraviolet/infrared (UV/IR) spectroscopy, which is sensitive to organic aromatic groups, together with ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy unprecedently revealed a relaxation process from the ligand to core state affecting the dynamics in excited states and some critical intermediate states favouring efficient room-temperature emission of these nanoclusters. This work provides some new insights into the origin of photoluminescence of metal nanoclusters and opens an avenue to modulate the dynamics of their excited states using aromatic ligands, which would have direct applications in lighting, light harvesting, and photocatalysis.

Abstract:Engineering the surface of the metal clusters with the core structure maintained and tuning their luminescence in a wide range is still a challenge in the nanomaterial research. We modified six mono‐pyridyl ligands with different electronic effects (conjugation effect or induction effect) on a superatomic silver cluster [Ag14(C2B10H10S2)6(CH3CN)8] (denoted as Ag 14 ) through in situ site‐specific surface engineering, and obtained the corresponding clusters [Ag14(C2B10H10S2)6(CH3CN)6(L1/L2)2] (denoted as NC‐1, 2 , L1/L2 = 4‐Acetylpyridine/4‐Carboxypyridine) and [Ag14(C2B10H10S2)6(L3/L4/L5/L6)8] (denoted as NC‐3, 4, 5, 6 , L3/L4/L5/L6 = 4‐Phenylpyridine/4‐(1‐Naphthyl)pyridine/9‐(4‐pyridine)anthracene/9‐(4‐ pyridine)pyrene). Through the modification of the Ag 14 cluster, a wide‐range luminescence from blue to red was realized. Ligand effects in photoluminescence of copper nanoclusters

Abstract:Copper nanoclusters have attracted significant interest in the field of materials science due to their high abundance, complex structure, and unique properties. However, there is a limited amount of research on the relationship between structure and properties. In this study, we synthesized and comprehensively characterized two new Cu9 nanoclusters, [Cu9(PhSe)6(PPh2O2)3] (Cu9-1) and [Cu9(CH3OPhS)6(PPh2O2)3] (Cu9-2), in order to investigate the effect of ligands on photoluminescence. Both clusters have the same metal skeleton and similar distribution of ligands, with the only difference being the surface ligands (PhSe vs CH3OPhS). Interestingly, the photoluminescence lifetime of Cu9-2 was found to be 3.2 times longer than that of Cu9-1. Furthermore, a notable Stokes shift (ST) was observed in the emission spectra of the two clusters. Single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed the formation of hydrogen bonds between neighboring clusters of Cu9-2, which influenced intramolecular interactions. Additionally, the methoxy groups in Cu9-2, acting as conjugated electron donors, promoted intramolecular charge transfer and π-π interaction. This study is expected to inspire further research on surface ligand engineering for controlling the properties of copper nanoclusters beyond photoluminescence.

Enhanced Electrochemiluminescence of Rod‐Shape 25‐Atom AuAg Nanoclusters through Ligand Engineering

Abstract:This study enhances bimetallic Au12Ag13 nanocluster electrochemiluminescence (ECL) via ligand engineering (PPh3 to P(Ph‐OMe)3), achieving a 3.6‐fold ECL efficiency boost, notably with 1 mM tri‐n‐propylamine. The proposed ECL mechanisms rooted in nanocluster activities offer promising avenues for improved metal nanocluster ECL in sensing and detection applications. The pursuit of highly emissive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) luminophores has long been a goal for both understanding mechanism and advancing detection applications. In this study, we employ ligand engineering to boost the ECL performance of bimetallic Au12Ag13 nanoclusters, substituting the PPh3 ligand with P(Ph‐OMe)3. The results demonstrate a 3.6‐fold enhancement in ECL efficiency following ligand exchange when compared to Au12Ag13‐PPh3, particularly in the presence of 1 mM tri‐n‐propylamine (TPrA) as a coreactant – surpassing the performance of the conventional Ru(bpy)32+ luminophore. Voltammetric analysis reveals the presence of both oxidative and reductive ECL signals under sweeping potentials, with corresponding ECL spectra collected. Proposed ECL mechanisms are rooted in the anodic and cathodic activities of Au12Ag13‐P(Ph‐OMe)3 nanoclusters. Notably, this work captures extremely high and transient ECL signals, sequentially activating LUMO and HOMO states, reminiscent of the behavior observed in Au12Ag13‐PPh3. Our findings present a promising strategy to enhance the ECL of metal nanoclusters, holding potential for further applications in sensing and detection.

Abstract:The properties of metal clusters are highly dependent on their molecular surface structure. The aim of this study is to precisely metallize and rationally control the photoluminescence properties of a carbon(C)-centered hexagold(I) cluster (CAu6I) using N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands with one pyridyl, or one or two picolyl pendants and a specific number of silver(I) ions at the cluster surface. The results suggest that the photoluminescence of the clusters depends highly on both the rigidity and coverage of the surface structure. In other words, the loss of structural rigidity significantly reduces the quantum yield (QY). The QY in CH2Cl2 is 0.04 for [(C)(Au-I-BIPc)(6)AgI3(CH3CN)(3)](BF4)(5) (BIPc = N-isopropyl-N'-2-picolylbenzimidazolylidene), a significant decrease from 0.86 for [(C)(Au-I-BIPy)(6)AgI2](BF4)(4) (BIPy = -Nisopropyl-N'-2-pyridylbenzimidazolylidene). This is due to the lower structural rigidity of the ligand BIPc because it contains a methylene linker. Increasing the number of capping Ag-I ions, i.e., the coverage of the surface structure, increases the phosphorescence efficiency. The QY for [(C)(Au-I-BIPc2)(6)Ag-4(I)(CH3CN)(2)](BF4)(6) (BIPc2 = N,N'-di(2-pyridyl)benzimidazolylidene) recovers to 0.40, 10-times that of the cluster with BIPc. Further theoretical calculations confirm the roles of Ag-I and NHC in the electronic structures. This study reveals the atomic-level surface structure-property relationships of heterometallic clusters.
Multicolor photoluminescence of Cu14 clusters modulated using surface ligands

Abstract:Copper nanoclusters exhibit unique structural features and their molecular assembly results in diverse photoluminescence properties. In this study, we present ligand-dependent multicolor luminescence observed in a Cu14 cluster, primarily protected by ortho-carborane-9,12-dithiol (o-CBDT), featuring an octahedral Cu6 inner kernel enveloped by eight isolated copper atoms. The outer layer of the metal kernel consists of six bidentate o-CBDT ligands, in which carborane backbones are connected through μ3-sulphide linkages. The initially prepared Cu14 cluster, solely protected by six o-CBDT ligands, did not crystallize in its native form. However, in the presence of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), the cluster crystallized along with six DMF molecules. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) revealed that the DMF molecules were directly coordinated to six of the eight capping Cu atoms, while oxygen atoms were bound to the two remaining Cu apices in antipodal positions. Efficient tailoring of the cluster surface with DMF shifted its luminescence from yellow to bright red. Luminescence decay profiles showed fluorescence emission for these clusters, originating from the singlet states. Additionally, we synthesized microcrystalline fibers with a one-dimensional assembly of DMF-appended Cu14 clusters and bidentate DPPE linkers. These fibers exhibited bright greenish-yellow phosphorescence emission, originating from the triplet state, indicating the drastic surface tailoring effect of secondary ligands. Theoretical calculations provided insights into the electronic energy levels and associated electronic transitions for these clusters. This work demonstrated dynamic tuning of the emissive excited states of copper nanoclusters through the efficient engineering of ligands.

Abstract:Luminescent CuInS2 nanocrystals have been synthesized in dodecanethiol using air-stable precursors. The nanocrystals were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The optical properties of the CuInS2 nanocrystals can be controlled by changing the reaction conditions, such as reaction time, temperature, and addition of ligands. It was found that the steady-state photoluminescence spectrum of the close-packed CuInS2 nanocrystals on glass substrate peaked at longer wavelength than that of the colloidal ones and the close-packed nanocrystals possessed a shorter luminescence decay time. This behavior was explained on the basis of Förster resonant energy transfer due to the shorter distance between nanocrystals on substrate.
Mechanism of Photoluminescence in Ag Nanoclusters: Metal-Centered Emission versus Synergistic Effect in Ligand-Centered Emission

Abstract:It remains unclear whether the emission center of ligand-encapsulated metal nanoclusters (MNCs) is the surface ligands or the metal core. In this paper, we simultaneously observed metal-centered and ligand-centered emissions in Ag nanoclusters. The contributions of the surface ligands and the metal core were individually investigated to understand the nature of AgNC photoemission. A new ligand synergistic emission effect was observed. The amino correlated nπ* state provides a pivot to bridge the carboxyl correlated ππ* and nπ* states to enhance the charge transfer efficiency between different surface electronic states. Consequently, the photoluminescence quantum yields were significantly improved (∼1 to ∼10%). Transient absorption studies revealed that decreasing the pH could expand the potential energy curve and generate a conical intersection. This would facilitate the charge transfer and relaxation of excited electrons via a radiative pathway, thereby enhancing the emission intensity. These new insights into the photoemission mechanisms of MNCs should stimulate additional experimental and theoretical studies and could benefit the molecular-level design of luminescent MNCs for optoelectronics and other applications.

Abstract:A study on tuning the fluorescence property of Cu nanoclusters by thiol ligands was presented . The photoluminescence (PL ) measurements show that the luminescent wave‐length of Cu nanoclusters capped by 2‐mercapto‐5‐n‐propylpyrimidine (M PP) is gradually blue‐shifted from 623 nm to 584 nm ,with increasing concentrations of dodecanethiol (C12 SH) added into the solution .The added thiol ligands ,as suggested by mass spectra ,do not change the number of Cu atoms in the clusters ,but replace some of the original MPP ligands .X‐ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectra reveal that with the increment of C12 SH ligands ,the Cu—Cu bonds disappear ,the Cu—S bond length is contracted from the original 0.228 nm to 0 .224 nm ,and the charge transfer from Cu to S is enhanced .Moreover ,the etching effect of C12 SH ligands leads to the change of atomic configuration of the Cu cores from the tetrahedron‐alike structure to the chain‐like structure of —S—Cu—S— .As a result ,the electronic features of the Cu clusters show a metallic‐to‐covalent transition , resulting in the blue‐shift of the luminescence and optical absorption wavelengths .
Atomically Defined Monocarborane Copper(I) Acetylides with Structural and Luminescence Properties Tuned by Ligand Sterics

Abstract:The weakly coordinating cluster [CB11 H12 ]- is used as a versatile building block for the preparation of luminescent copper(I) complexes. Treatment of [CB11 H11 -12-C≡CH]- with CuI and ammonia affords {(CB11 H11 -12-C≡C)2 Cu4 (NH3 )3 }n (2). Addition of selected phosphine and pyridine ligands transforms 2 to a range of homometallic products 3-13. All compounds have been characterized by X-ray crystallography, which reveals a surprising variety of structural complexity featuring cores with two to ten Cu+ centers. In the solid state, products 3-13 exhibit room-temperature phosphorescence across the visible spectrum in colors from blue to deep red. Lifetimes at room temperature are in the microsecond regime, and quantum yields of up to Φ=0.99 are observed.

Abstract:Fluorescence properties of water dispersible Au nanoclusters are tuned by varying the ammonium head group. Density Functional Theory studies correlate the distinction in emission when head group is phenyl to charge transfer characteristics. Au nanoclusters with tailored photoluminescence can be obtained through controlled nanoparticle ligand interface chemistry. The present work reports molecular gold nanoclusters with tuneable photoluminescence emission from 600 to 700 nm using N,N′,N′′‐trialkyl (11‐mercaptoundecyl)ammonium chloride ligands as capping‐agents. The tunability within red spectral region is regulated through specific interface chemistry between gold nanoclusters of molecular range and functional groups of the quaternary ammonium head over N,N′,N′′‐trialkyl(11‐mercaptoundecyl)ammonium chloride. Combined understanding obtained from the spectroscopy, microscopy, and density functional theory studies demonstrate that the functional group specific electronic interactions at the interfaces steer the emission characteristics of "molecular" Au nanoparticles. The study clearly identifies that bulkier functional groups, i.e., triethyl, tripropyl, tributyl, and dimethyl benzene over N+ (of thiol ligand) through their steric effects minimize the particle size giving rise to tunable photoluminescence emission in red spectral region. However, the red shift seen in the emission Au nanoclusters with N‐(11‐mercaptoundecyl)‐N,N′‐dimethylbenzenammonium chloride ligand in contradiction to particle size effect is computationally proved to be due to the delocalization of electron density from benzene aromatic ring to N+ of ammonium head leading to a reduction in the HOMO‐LUMO energy gap.

Designable luminescence with quantum dot-silver plasmon coupler.

Abstract:We explore a strongly interacting QDs/Ag plasmonic coupling structure that enables multiple approaches to manipulate light emission from QDs. Group II-VI semiconductor QDs with unique surface states (SSs) impressively modify the plasmonic character of the contiguous Ag nanostructures whereby the localized plasmons (LPs) in the Ag nanostructures can effectively extract the non-radiative SSs of the QDs to radiatively emit via SS-LP resonance. The SS-LP coupling is demonstrated to be readily tunable through surface-state engineering both during QD synthesis and in the post-synthesis stage. The combination of surface-state engineering and band-tailoring engineering allows us to precisely control the luminescence color of the QDs and enables the realization of white-light emission with single-size QDs. Being a versatile metal, the Ag in our optical device functions in multiple ways: as a support for the LPs, for optical reflection, and for electrical conduction. Two application examples of the QDs/Ag plasmon coupler for optical devices are given, an Ag microcavity + plasmon-coupling structure and a new QD light-emitting diode. The new QDs/Ag plasmon coupler opens exciting possibilities in developing novel light sources and biomarker detectors.
Ligand engineering of circularly polarized luminescence inversion and enhancement for chiral Ag6 nanoclusters

Abstract:Coinage metal nanoclusters usually show bright emission, which is useful for obtaining circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) after modifying with chiral organic ligands. However, it remains challenging to understand the chiral transfer and amplification mechanisms and achieve CPL inversion without changing the absolute configuration of the chiral ligands. Here, we present four pairs of six-core silver nanoclusters protected by the chiral thiazinthione- and oxazinthione-based ligands, showing S⋯S interaction-enhanced luminescence quantum yield (QY) and supramolecular chirality inversion induced by the peripheral methyl and phenyl groups in both ground and excited states.

Abstract:Au nanocluster (AuNCs)-based luminescent functional materials have attracted the interest of researchers owing to their small size, tractable surface modification, phosphorescence lifetime and biocompatibility. However, the poor luminescence quantum yield (QY) of AuNCs limits their practical applications. Herein, we synthesized a type of AuNCs modified by 4,6-diamino-2-mercaptopyrimidine hydrate (DPT-AuNCs). Furthermore, organic acids, i.e., citric acid (CA) and tartaric acid (TA), were chosen for co-assembly with DPT-AuNCs to produce AuNCs-based luminescent materials with enhanced emission. Firstly, it was found that CA could significantly enhance the emission of DPT−AuNCs with the formation of red emission nanofibers (QY = 17.31%), which showed a potential for usage in I− detection. The n···π/π···π interaction between the CA and the DPT ligand was proposed as crucial for the emission. Moreover, chiral TA could not only improve the emission of DPT-AuNCs, but could also transfer its chirality to DPT-AuNCs and induce the formation of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active nanofibers. It was demonstrated that the CPL signal could increase 4.6-fold in a ternary CA/TA/DPT-AuNCs co-assembly system. This work provides a convenient way to build AuNCs-based luminescent materials as probes, and opens a new avenue for building CPL-active materials by achiral NCs through a co-assembly strategy.

Abstract:Due to their atomically precise structures and intriguing chemical/physical properties, metal nanoclusters are an emerging class of modular nanomaterials. Photo-luminescence (PL) is one of their most fascinating properties, due to the plethora of promising PL-based applications, such as chemical sensing, bio-imaging, cell labeling, phototherapy, drug delivery, and so on. However, the PL of most current nanoclusters is still unsatisfactory—the PL quantum yield (QY) is relatively low (generally lower than 20%), the emission lifetimes are generally in the nanosecond range, and the emitted color is always red (emission wavelengths of above 630 nm). To address these shortcomings, several strategies have been adopted, and are reviewed herein: capped-ligand engineering, metallic kernel alloying, aggregation-induced emission, self-assembly of nanocluster building blocks into cluster-based networks, and adjustments on external environment factors. We further review promising applications of these fluorescent nanoclusters, with particular focus on their potential to impact the fields of chemical sensing, bio-imaging, and bio-labeling. Finally, scope for improvements and future perspectives of these novel nanomaterials are highlighted as well. Our intended audience is the broader scientific community interested in the fluorescence of metal nanoclusters, and our review hopefully opens up new horizons for these scientists to manipulate PL properties of nanoclusters. This review is based on publications available up to December 2018.

Abstract:A pair of propeller-like chiral trinuclear Cu-I clusters (R/S-Cu3) with unique photoinduced fluorescence enhancement were prepared. R/S-Cu3 showed intense variable luminescence after UV light irradiation, which was attributed to the stepwise oxidation of ligand in the clusters. It exhibited typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) (alpha(AIE)=17.3). Mechanism studies showed that metal cluster-centered (MCC) and triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer ((MLCT)-M-3) processes are the origin of the luminescence; the processes are regulated by a restriction of intramolecular motions mechanism in a different state. The chiral structure and AIE feature endow R/S-Cu3 with remarkable circularly polarized luminescence (g(lum)=2x10(-2)) in the aggregated state. It shows good capability for producing reactive oxygen species. This work enriches the kinds of atomically precise AIE clusters, gains insight into their luminescence mechanism, and offers the prospect of application in multifunctional materials.
Intramolecular charge transfer enables highly-efficient X-ray luminescence in cluster scintillators

Abstract:Luminescence clusters composed of organic ligands and metals have gained significant interests as scintillators owing to their great potential in high X-ray absorption, customizable radioluminescence, and solution processability at low temperatures. However, X-ray luminescence efficiency in clusters is primarily governed by the competition between radiative states from organic ligands and nonradiative cluster-centered charge transfer. Here we report that a class of Cu 4 I 4 cubes exhibit highly emissive radioluminescence in response to X-ray irradiation through functionalizing biphosphine ligands with acridine. Mechanistic studies show that these clusters can efficiently absorb radiation ionization to generate electron-hole pairs and transfer them to ligands during thermalization for efficient radioluminescence through precise control over intramolecular charge transfer. Our experimental results indicate that copper/iodine-to-ligand and intraligand charge transfer states are predominant in radiative processes. We demonstrate that photoluminescence and electroluminescence quantum efficiencies of the clusters reach 95% and 25.6%, with the assistance of external triplet-to-singlet conversion by a thermally activated delayed fluorescence matrix. We further show the utility of the Cu 4 I 4 scintillators in achieving a lowest X-ray detection limit of 77 nGy s −1 and a high X-ray imaging resolution of 12 line pairs per millimeter. Our study offers insights into universal luminescent mechanism and ligand engineering of cluster scintillators.

Controllable Photoluminescence Enhancement of CdTe/CdS Quantum Dots Thin Films Incorporation with Au Nanoparticles

Abstract:Au nanoparticles (Au NPs)/CdTe/CdS QDs nanocomposite films were fabricated by deposition of Au NPs and layer-by-layer self-assembly of colloidal CdTe/CdS QDs. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra showed that Au NPs incorporation resulted in an increase of PL intensity about 16-fold compared with that of the samples without Au NPs. PL enhancement of Au NPs/CdTe/CdS QDs nanocomposite films can be controlled by tuning the thickness of spacer layer between the metal nanoparticles (MNPs) and QDs. Optical absorption spectra exhibited the incorporation of Au NPs boosted the absorption of Au NPs/CdTe/CdS QDs nanocomposite films. The results of finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation indicated that the increased sizes of Au NPs resulted in stronger localization of electric field, which boosted the PL intensity of QDs in the vicinity of Au NPs. We thought that these were mainly attributed to localized SP enhancement effects of the Au NPs. Our experiment results demonstrated that Au NPs/QDs nanocomposite films would be a promising candidate for optoelectronic devices application. PACS 78.55.-m; 82.33.Ln; 68.65.Hb.
