Abstract:Using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) near-infrared high-resolution imaging from the 3D-HST survey, we analyze the morphology and structure of 502 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs; $L_{\rm IR}>10^{12}L_{\odot}$) at $1<z<3$. Their rest-frame optical morphologies show that high-redshift ULIRGs are a mixture of mergers or interacting systems, irregular galaxies, disks, and ellipticals. Most of ULIRGs in our sample can be roughly divided into merging systems and late-type galaxies (Sb$-$Ir), with relatively high $M_{20}$ ($>-1.7$) and small S\'{e}rsic index ($n<2.5$), while others are elliptical-like (E/S0/Sa) morphologies with lower $M_{20}$ ($<-1.7$) and larger $n$ ($>2.5$). The morphological diversities of ULIRGs suggest that there are different formation processes for these galaxies. Merger processes between galaxies and disk instabilities play an important role in the formation and evolution of ULIRGs at high redshift. In the meantime, we also find that the evolution of the size ($r_{\rm e}$) with redshift of ULIRGs at redshift $z\sim1-3$ follows $r_{\rm e}\propto(1+z)^{-(0.96\pm0.23)}$.

Abstract:Using the high-resolution F160W images observed by the HST WFC3 (Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3) in the CANDELS-EGS (Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey-Extended Groth Strip) field, we have studied the morphological and structural features of 9 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z ∼ 2. We find a wide range of morphological diversity for these ULIRGs, from ellipsoids to multiple bright nuclei or diffuse structures, e.g., the double nuclei, gaseous bridges, dual asym- metries, irregular or elliptical structures. In order to study the morphology of these ULIRGs quantitatively, their morphological parameters (the Gini coeffcient G and moment index M20) are measured in the rest-frame optical wave- band. Compared with the low-redshift counterparts, the high-redshift ULIRGs show a smaller value of G and a larger value of M20, indicating a less concen- tricity and a larger asymmetry of the stellar population distribution in these ULIRGs. Based on a 2-D fitting of the brightness profiles of these ULIRGs, we have derived their effective radii, which are distributed in a range from 2.4 to kpc, with a mean value of (3.9 ± 1.1) kpc. Moreover, we find that in average the sizes of the high-redshift ULIRGs are one to two times smaller than those of the nearby star-forming galaxies of analogous stellar mass. Our results are consistent with those of other studies under the similar conditions of redshift and infrared luminosity.

Abstract:UltraLuminous InfraRed Galaxies (ULIRGs) are galaxies defined to have extremely high infrared (IR) luminosities (LIR ＞ 1012 L☉).Observations have shown that high-redshift ULIRGs are massive galaxies (M* ＞ 1011 M☉),with extremely high ratio of infrared to optical flux density (F24 μm/FR ＞ 1 000) and intensive star formation (100 ～ 1 000 M☉ · a-1).These objects are relatively rare at z ≈ 0,but their space density rapidly increase with look-back time and apparently peaks around z =2 ～ 3.Upon it's discovery,ULIRGs were suggested to be a feasible evolutionary phase towards the formation of local massive early-type galaxies.Their rest-frame optical morphologies show that high-redshift ULIRGs are a mixture of mergers or interacting systems,irregular galaxies,disks,and ellipticals.The morphological diversities of ULIRGs suggest that there are different formation processes for these galaxies.Merger processes between galaxies and disk instabilities play an important role in the formation and evolution of ULIRGs at high redshift.Mid-infrared (MIR) spectra of ULIRGs are observed with the Spitzer/IRS (InfraRed Spectrograph) instrument.For ULIRGs at z ≈ 2,major spectral features including the PAH (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon) emission features at 7.7,8.6,and 11.3 μm and silicate absorption from 8 to 13 μm (peaking at 9.7 μm) fall in the observable wavelength range.ULIRGs can be divided into two types according to their MIR spectra.Objects with strong power-law continua are powered mainly by active galactic nuclei (AGNs),while those with a strong PAH emission are powered by intensive star formation.The clustering signal of ULIRGs roughly corresponds to a correlation length of r0 =7.40 h-1.Mpc for the full F24 μm ＞ 0.3 mJy sample.The clustering strength increases with luminosity,up to r0 =12.97 h-1.Mpc for F24 μm ＞ 0.6 mJy ULIRGs.Moreover,observations demonstrate that a median dust temperature is about 40 K for ULIRGs at z ≈ 2.

Abstract:Starting from a sample of 24 m sources in the Extended Groth Strip, we use 3.6-8 mu m color criteria to select ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z similar to 2. Spectroscopy from 20-38 mu m of 14 objects verifies their nature and gives their redshifts. Multi-wavelength data for these objects imply stellar masses > 1011 M and star formation rates > 410 M circle dot yr(-1). Four objects of this sample observed at 1.6 mu m (rest-frame visible) with Hubble Space Telescope/WFC3 show diverse morphologies, suggesting that multiple formation processes create ULIRGs. Of the 14 objects, 4 show signs of active galactic nuclei, but the luminosity appears to be dominated by star formation in all cases.

Abstract:We present a detailed structural and morphological study of a large sample of spectroscopically confirmed galaxies at z >= 6 using deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) near-IR broad-band images and Subaru Telescope optical narrow-band images. The galaxy sample consists of 51 Ly alpha emitters (LAEs) at z similar or equal to 5.7, 6.5, and 7.0, and 16 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at 5.9 <= z <= 6.5. These galaxies exhibit a wide range of rest-frame UV continuum morphology in the HST images, from compact features to multiple component systems. The fraction of merging/interacting galaxies reaches 40%-50% at the brightest end of M-1500 <= -20.5 mag. The intrinsic half-light radii r(hl,in), after correcting for point-spread function (PSF) broadening, are roughly between r(hl,in) similar or equal to 0.'' 05 (0.3 kpc) and 0.'' 3 (1.7 kpc) at M-1500 <= -19.5 mag. The median r(hl,in) value is 0.'' 16 (similar to 0.9 kpc). This is consistent with the sizes of bright LAEs and LBGs at z >= 6 found in previous studies. In addition, more luminous galaxies tend to be larger and exhibit a weak size-luminosity relation, r(hl,in) proportional to L-0.14 at M-1500 <= -19.5 mag. The slope of 0.14 is significantly flatter than those in fainter LBG samples. We discuss the morphology of z >= 6 galaxies with nonparametric methods, including the concentration, asymmetry, and smoothness system and the Gini and M-20 parameters, and demonstrate their validity through simulations. We search for extended Ly alpha emission halos around LAEs at z similar or equal to 5.7 and 6.5 by stacking a number of narrow-band images. We do not find evidence of extended Ly alpha halos predicted by cosmological simulations. Such halos, if they exist, could be weaker than predicted. Finally, we investigate positional misalignment between the UV continuum and Ly alpha emissions in LAEs. While the two positions are generally consistent, several merging galaxies show significant positional differences. This is likely caused by a disturbed interstellar medium distribution due to merging activity.

Abstract:Abstract We present a result of IRS spectroscopy of 14 Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) in the Extended Groth Strip region. These galaxies are massive and have very high star formation rate. Four objects of this sample are detected in the HST/WFC3 near-infrared imaging. They show very diversified rest-frame optical morphologies, including string-like, extended/diffused, and even spiral with a possible bulge, implying different formation processes for these galaxies. We also search for signatures of active galactic nucleus (AGN) in our sample in the X-ray, mid-infrared and radio bands. This sample is dominated by objects with intensive star formation, only 14–29% of them have AGN activities.

Abstract:We compare the rest-frame ultraviolet and rest-frame optical morphologies of 2 < z < 3 star-forming galaxies in the GOODS-S field using Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 and ACS images from the CANDELS, GOODS, and ERS programs. We show that the distribution of sizes and concentrations for 1.90 < z < 2.35 galaxies selected via their rest-frame optical emission-lines are statistically indistinguishable from those of Lyman-alpha emitting systems found at z ~ 2.1 and z ~ 3.1. We also show that the z > 2 star-forming systems of all sizes and masses become smaller and more compact as one shifts the observing window from the UV to the optical. We argue that this offset is due to inside-out galaxy formation over the first ~ 2 Gyr of cosmic time.

Morphology Of Spitzer 24 Mu M Detected Galaxies In The Udf: The Links Between Star Formation And Galaxy Morphology

Abstract:We have studied the morphologies of infrared- luminous galaxies at 0.3 <= z <= 1.4 in the HST Ultra Deep Field ( UDF) by calculating concentration and asymmetry indices and comparing the results with similar calculations for: ( 1) galaxies at similar redshift that are less infrared- active, and ( 2) local luminous infrared galaxies [ LIRGs; L-IR( 8-1000 mu m) > 10(11) L-circle dot]. We find that the high-redshift samples are dominated by galaxies with concentrations similar to local late-type disk galaxies; however, they are significantly more asymmetric than most local galaxies but are similar in both regards to local LIRGs. On average, the high-redshift infrared- active galaxies are slightly more asymmetric than the less active ones, although they do include a significantly higher portion of highly asymmetric ( merging?) systems and a lower portion of more concentrated, symmetric ones. The morphological similarity of infrared- active and typical infrared- inactive galaxies at high redshift suggests that they may be from the same parent population, but are in different stages of an episodic star formation process. The similarity between high redshift and local LIRGs suggests that a certain level of asymmetry is generally associated with LIRG-level activity.
The Structures of Distant Galaxies I: Galaxy Structures and the Merger Rate to z~3 in the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field

Abstract:This paper begins a series in which we examine the structures of distant galaxies to directly determine the history of their formation modes. We start this series by examining the structures of z_F850LP < 27 galaxies in the Hubble Ultra-Deep field, the deepest high-resolution optical image taken to date. We investigate a few basic features of galaxy structure using this image. These include: (1) The agreement of visual eye-ball classifications and non-parametric quantitative (CAS, Gini/M_20) methods; (2) How distant galaxy quantitative structures can vary as a function of rest-frame wavelength; and (3) The evolution of distant galaxy structures up to z~3. One of our major conclusions is that the majority of galaxies with z_850 < 27 are peculiar in appearance, and that galaxy assembly is rapidly occurring at these magnitudes, even up to the present time. We find a general agreement between galaxy classification by eye and through quantitative methods, as well as a general agreement between the CAS and the Gini/M_20 parameters. We find that the Gini/M_20 method appears to find a larger number of galaxy mergers than the CAS system, but contains a larger contamination from non-mergers. We furthermore calculate the merger rate of galaxies in the UDF up to z~3, finding an increase with redshift as well as stellar mass, confirming previous work in the Hubble Deep Field. We find that massive galaxies with M_{*} > 10^10 M_0 undergo 4.3_+0.8^-0.8 major galaxy mergers at z < 3, with all of this merging occurring at z > 1.

Abstract:We analyze 347 galaxies at redshift 4 < z < 9.5 using JWST observations from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) program by simultaneously fitting a two-dimensional parametric model to the seven-filter Near Infrared Camera images to measure the overall structural parameters and quantify the global properties of the galaxies in the rest-frame optical band. Particular attention is devoted to deriving robust uncertainties that include, among other factors, the influence of cosmological surface brightness dimming and resolution effects. Using the global Sérsic index (n < 1.5) and observed axial ratio (q < 0.6) as a guide, we place a conservative lower limit of ∼45% on the incidence of galactic disks. Galaxies follow a relation between the rest-frame optical luminosity and effective radius in the redshift range 4 < z < 9.5, as well as separately over the intervals 4 < z < 5 and 5 ≤ z < 9.5, with a very similar slope but a marginally lower zero-point in the higher-redshift bin (R e = 0.69 ± 0.05 kpc) compared to the lower-redshift bin (R e = 0.91 ± 0.04 kpc). Within the limitations of the current sample size, we find no significant redshift evolution of n or R e at these early epochs.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive study of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), leveraging data from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite Faint Source Catalogue and the spectroscopic catalog in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 16. Our meticulous crossmatching technique significantly enhances the reliability of ULIRG identification, resulting in the identification of 283 reliable ULIRGs, including 102 new detections, while discarding 120 previously reported false sources. Covering a redshift range of z = 0.018–0.996, with a median redshift of z ̄ = 0.259 , our uniform sample reveals apparent interaction features in approximately 40% of ULIRGs, increasing to 92% for those with z < 0.1. Through optical spectra analysis, it is indicated that over 58% of ULIRGs host an active galactic nucleus (AGN), which is twice as high as detections based solely on infrared colors. Moreover, a pronounced excess of radio emissions associated with AGN activity results in a steeper radio–far-infrared correlation. Notably, Type I ULIRGs exhibit properties similar to those of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, with an elevated incidence rate of Mg ii broad absorption lines (16.7%), surpassing that of typical optically selected quasars by over tenfold, consistent with current evolutionary models. We anticipate that forthcoming telescopes such as the China Space Station Telescope and Leighton Chajnantor Telescope will provide deeper insights into ULIRG morphology, dust distribution, molecular gas, and AGN activity.

Abstract:Utilizing the multi-band photometric data of the COSMOS (Cosmic Evolution Survey)/UltraVISTA (Ultra-deep Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy) field and the high-resolution HST WFC3 (Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3) near-infrared images in the CANDELS (Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey) field, we have selected 362 galaxies with the redshifts of 1≤ z ≤3 and the stellar masses of M* ≥ 1010.5M⊙, and made the classification study on the morphologies of these massive galaxies. The results from the UVJ ((U–V) vs (V–J)) two-color diagram classification, visual classification, non-model based classification (Gini coefficient G and moment index M20), and model based classification (Sérsic index n) are in good agreement with each other. Compared with the star-forming galaxies (SFGs), the quiescent galaxies (QGs) defined by the UVJ two-color diagram exhibit the compact elliptical structures, and generally have larger n and G, but smaller M20 and galaxy's effective radius re. The evolution of galaxy size with the redshift is obvious for various QG and SFG samples defined by the different classification systems (two-color diagram classification system, model and non-model based classification systems), and this evolutionary tendency is stronger for QGs in comparison with SFGs, independent to the selection of galaxy classification methods.

Abstract:We present the mid-infrared (MIR) morphologies for 64 star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at 0.2 < z < 2.5 with stellar mass M * > 10 9 M ⊙ using James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) observations from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science survey. The MIRI bands span the MIR (7.7–21 μm), enabling us to measure the effective radii (R eff ) and Sérsic indexes of these SFGs at rest-frame 6.2 and 7.7 μm, which contains strong emission from Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features, a well-established tracer of star formation in galaxies. We define a "PAH band" as the MIRI bandpass that contains these features at the redshift of the galaxy. We then compare the galaxy morphologies in the PAH bands to those in the rest-frame near-ultraviolet (NUV) using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS)/F435W or ACS/F606W and optical/near-IR using HST WFC3/F160W imaging from UVCANDELS and CANDELS. The R eff of galaxies in the PAH band are slightly smaller (∼10%) than those in F160W for galaxies with M * ≳ 10 9.5 M ⊙ at z ≤ 1.2, but the PAH band and F160W have similar fractions of light within 1 kpc. In contrast, the R eff of galaxies in the NUV band are larger, with lower fractions of light within 1 kpc compared to F160W for galaxies at z ≤ 1.2. Using the MIRI data to estimate the SFR IR surface density, we find that the correlation between the SFR IR surface density and stellar mass has a steeper slope than that of the SFR UV surface density and stellar mass, suggesting more massive galaxies having increasing amounts of obscured fraction of star formation in their inner regions. This paper demonstrates how the high-angular resolution data from JWST/MIRI can reveal new information about the morphology of obscured star formation.

Abstract:We present a multi-wavelength, UV-to-radio analysis for a sample of massive (M$_{\ast}$ $\sim$ 10$^{10}$ M$_\odot$) IRAC- and MIPS 24$\mu$m-detected Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) with spectroscopic redshifts z$\sim$3 in the GOODS-North field (L$_{\rm UV}$$>1.8\times$L$^{\ast}_{z=3}$). For LBGs without individual 24$\mu$m detections, we employ stacking techniques at 24$\mu$m, 1.1mm and 1.4GHz, to construct the average UV-to-radio spectral energy distribution and find it to be consistent with that of a Luminous Infrared Galaxy (LIRG) with L$\rm_{IR}$=4.5$^{+1.1}_{-2.3}$$\times 10^{11}$ L$_{\odot}$ and a specific star formation rate (SSFR) of 4.3 Gyr$^{-1}$ that corresponds to a mass doubling time $\sim$230 Myrs. On the other hand, when considering the 24$\mu$m-detected LBGs we find among them galaxies with L$\rm_{IR}> 10^{12}$ L$_{\odot}$, indicating that the space density of $z\sim$3 UV-selected Ultra-luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) is $\sim$(1.5$\pm$0.5)$\times 10^{-5}$ Mpc$^{-3}$. We compare measurements of star formation rates (SFRs) from data at different wavelengths and find that there is tight correlation (Kendall's $\tau >$ 99.7%) and excellent agreement between the values derived from dust-corrected UV, mid-IR, mm and radio data for the whole range of L$\rm_{IR}$ up to L$\rm_{IR}$ $\sim$ 10$^{13}$ L$_{\odot}$. This range is greater than that for which the correlation is known to hold at z$\sim$2, possibly due to the lack of significant contribution from PAHs to the 24$\mu$m flux at $z\sim$3. The fact that this agreement is observed for galaxies with L$\rm_{IR}$ $>$ 10$^{12}$ L$_{\odot}$ suggests that star-formation in UV-selected ULIRGs, as well as the bulk of star-formation activity at this redshift, is not embedded in optically thick regions as seen in local ULIRGs and submillimeter-selected galaxies at $z=2$.

Abstract:We present a morphological analysis of the 16 μm flux-density-limited galaxy sample at 0.8 < z < 1.3 from Huang et al. (2021). At the targeted redshift, the 16 μm emission corresponds to the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon feature from intense star formation, or dust heated by active galactic nuclei (AGN). Our sample of 479 galaxies are dominated by luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs; 67%) in three CANDLES fields (Extended Groth Strip, Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North and South fields), and are further divided into AGN-dominated, star-forming dominated, composite, and blue compact galaxies by their spectral energy distribution types. The majority of our sample (71%) have disk morphologies, with the few AGN-dominated galaxies being more bulge-dominated than the star-forming-dominated and composite galaxies. The distribution of our sample on the Gini versus M 20 plane is consistent with previous studies, where the Sérsic index n shows an increasing trend toward the smaller M 20 and higher Gini region below the dividing line for mergers. The subsample of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) follows a steep size–mass relation that is closer to the early-type galaxies. In addition, as the 4.5 μm luminosity excess ( L 4.5 exc , proxy for AGN strength) increases, our sample appears to be more bulge dominated (i.e., higher n). Based on the specific star formation rate and compactness ( log 10 Σ 1.5 , Σ 1.5 = M * / R e 1.5 ) diagram, the majority of our LIRG-dominated galaxy sample follows a secular evolution track, and their distribution can be explained without involving any merging activities. Out of the 16 ULIRGs in our sample, six are compact with strong AGN contributions, likely evolving along the fast track from more violent activities.

Ultra-deep Spitzer Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy of LIRGs and ULIRGs at z ~ 1-2

Abstract:We present ultra-deep mid-IR spectra of 48 infrared-luminous galaxies in the GOODS-South field obtained with the InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. These galaxies are selected among faint infrared sources (0.14 - 0.5 mJy at 24 um) in two redshift bins (0.76-1.05 and 1.75-2.4) to sample the major contributors to the cosmic infrared background at the most active epochs. We estimate redshifts for 92% of the sample using PAH and Si absorption features. Only few of these galaxies (5% at z~1 and 12% at z~2) have their total infrared luminosity dominated by emission from AGN. The averaged mid-IR spectra of the z~1 LIRGs and of the z~2 ULIRGs are very similar to the averaged spectrum of local starbursts and HII-like ULIRGs, respectively. We find that 6.2um PAH equivalent widths reach a plateau of ~1 um for L(24 mu) < 1E11 L(sun). At higher luminosities, EW (6.2 mu) anti-correlates with L(24 um). Intriguingly, high-z ULIRGs and SMG lie above the local EW (6.2 um) - L(24 um) relationship suggesting that, at a given luminosity, high-z ULIRGs have AGN contributions to their dust emission lower than those of local counterparts. A quantitative analysis of their morphology shows that most of the luminous IR galaxies have morphologies similar to those of IR-quiet galaxies at the same redshift. All z~2 ULIRGs of our sample are IR-excess BzK galaxies and most of them have L(FIR)/L(1600A) ratios higher than those of starburst galaxies at a given UV slope. The ``IR excess'' (Daddi et al. 2007) is mostly due to strong 7.7 um PAH emission and under-estimation of UV dust extinction. On the basis of the AGN-powered L (6 um) continuum measured directly from the mid-IR spectra, we estimate an average intrinsic X-ray AGN luminosity of L(2-10 keV) = (0.1 +/- 0.6) 1E43 erg/s, a value substantially lower than the prediction by Daddi et al. (2007).

Abstract:We study the morphology and star formation properties of 159 local luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) using multi-color images from Data Release 2 (DR2) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The LIRGs are selected from a cross-correlation analysis between the IRAS survey and SDSS. They are all brighter than 15.9 mag in the r-band and below redshift ~ 0.1, and so can be reliably classified morphologically. We find that the fractions of interacting/merging and spiral galaxies are ~ 48% and ~ 40% respectively. Our results complement and confirm the decline (increase) in the fraction of spiral (interacting/merging) galaxies from z ~1 to z ~ 0.1, as found by Melbourne, Koo & Le Floc'h (2005). About 75% of spiral galaxies in the local LIRGs are barred, indicating that bars may play an important role in triggering star formation rates > 20 M_{sun}/yr in the local universe. Compared with high redshift LIRGs, local LIRGs have lower specific star formation rates, smaller cold gas fractions and a narrower range of stellar masses. Local LIRGs appear to be either merging galaxies forming intermediate mass ellipticals or spiral galaxies undergoing high star formation activities regulated by bars.
