Abstract:Near-infrared-downconversion-near-infrared (NIR-DC-NIR) bioimaging based on lanthanide doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) has received much attention due to its deeper penetration, and higher contrast imaging and signal-to-noise ratio in biological tissues. The size of UCNPs determines the mechanism and rate of cell uptake of the nanoparticles and their ability to permeate through biological tissues. Herein, we experimentally and theoretically demonstrate downconversion-near-infrared (DC-NIR) emission behavior in different sized UCNPs ranging from 5-150 nm. Interestingly, 15-40 nm UCNPs have more effective DC-NIR emissions than 150 nm UCNPs and an extremely high excitation threshold, which is entirely different from the size-dependent upconversion-visible (UC-VIS) emissions usually observed in UCNPs. We also observed that the intensity ratio of the DC-NIR emission to the UC-VIS emission decreases with the increase of the particle size and the excitation power, attributed to the more efficient upconversion (UC) process. Finally, we further confirmed that the competition process between the UC population and non-radiative relaxation to the DC-NIR level plays a key role in size-independent DC-NIR emissions. Our discovery would provide guidance for optimizing and designing NIR-DC-NIR NPs for bioimaging applications.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline infrared-to-visible up-conversion phosphors, ytterbium and erbium co-doped sodium yttrium fluoride, were synthesized. Spherical particles with narrow size distribution were prepared by a co-precipitation method in the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Particles of controlled size in the range of 37 to 166 nm diameter were obtained by adjusting the molar ratio of EDTA to total lanthanides. Although the as-prepared nanoparticles emit very weak up-conversion fluorescence when excited by infrared light, the emission was enhanced by up to 40-fold after they were annealed at temperatures between 400 and 600 degreesC. By comparison with the bulk phosphor, the luminescence efficiency of the nanoparticle was estimated to be 1%. Factors affecting the particle size and their up-conversion fluorescence intensity were investigated by various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. Preliminary results demonstrated the nanoparticles as promising up-converting fluorescence labels in the detection of biological interactions.

Abstract:Schietinger et al. (Nano Lett. 2009, 9, 2477-2481) observed single nanoparticle emission from NaYF4:Er3+,Yb3+ and noted unusual changes in the intensities of red and green emissions with particle size. We show that the documented changes are due to instrumental artifacts and that the explanations given for the changes are incorrect.

Abstract:Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped LiYF4 nanocrystals were prepared by a facile solvothermal method. By adjusting the LiOH concentration, LiYF4 crystals with the size range from 16 nm to 2.0 μm were synthesized. Under the excitation by a 976 nm laser, upconversion quantum efficiency of the LiYF4: Er3+/Yb3+ samples were measured. It was observed that upconversion quantum efficiency tended to decrease with the reduction of particle size from microscale to nanoscale. A model was proposed to clarify the surface quenching mechanism influencing the size-dependent upconversion luminescence.

Abstract:Near infrared (NIR)-to-visible upconversion nanoparticles of pure hexagonal phase beta-NaYF4: Yb3+, Er3+ nanocrystals were successfully synthesized by a high boiling temperature organic phase synthesis strategy in oleic acid (OA), which acted as a ligand. The upconversion photoluminescence intensity of the nanocrystals was modulated by varying the reaction temperature and the concentration of sensitizer Yb3+ ions and activator Er3+ ions. The prepared nanocrystals were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and photoluminescence spectroscopy. All the results show that the as-prepared monodispersed upconversion nanocrystals emit high photoluminescence when excited by a 980 nm laser. It was found that the up-conversion emission spectra of beta-NaYF4: Yb3+, Er3+ presented three peaks at about 655, 540, and 521 nm. The optimized concentrations of the sensitizer Yb3+ and the activator Er3+ are 20% and 2% mmol, respectively. These highly efficient nanocrystals have exhibited great potential in bioimaging and photoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Despite recent achievements to reduce surface quenching in NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals, a complete understanding of how the nanocrystal size affects the brightness of upconversion luminescence is still incomplete. Here we investigated upconversion luminescence of Yb, Er-doped nanocrystals in a broad range of sizes from 6 nm to 45 nm (cubic or hexagonal phases), displaying an increasing red-to-green luminescence intensity ratio and reduced luminescence lifetimes with decreasing size. By analyzing the upconversion process with a set of rate equations, we found that their asymptotic analytic solutions explain lower decay rates of red compared to green upconversion luminescence. Furthermore, we quantified the effect of the surface on luminescence lifetime in a model where nanocrystal emitters are divided between the near-surface and inside regions of each nanocrystal. We clarify the influence of the four nonradiative recombination mechanisms (intrinsic phonon modes, vibration energy of surface ligands, solvent-mediated quenching, and surface defects) on the decay rates for different-size nanocrystals, and find that the defect density dominates decay rates for small (below 15 nm) nanocrystals. Our results indicate that a defect-reduction strategy is a key step in producing small upconversion nanocrystals with increased brightness for a variety of bioimaging and biosensing applications.

Abstract:The dopant concentration of lanthanide ions plays one of the critical roles to manipulate size/morphology, photon population pathway, or luminescence color/intensity in upconversion nanoparticles (UCNCs), which have a significant effect on their application developments. Herein, a strategy is demonstrated for simultaneous size, morphology and multicolor luminescence tuning in the single doped lanthanide activator Er 3+ ion system through simply tuning the concentration of Er 3+ ions. The doping of different Er 3+ ion amounts in NaYbF 4 :Er nanocrystals can control nanoparticle size (from several hundreds to tens of nanometers) and morphology. Moreover, multicolor upconversion luminescence involving green, yellow, orange and red can be obtained in the NaYbF 4 :Er UCNCs by changing the excitation power density of 980 nm laser. Mechanistic studies reveal the size and morphology evolution process as well as saturation/cross relaxation effects induced tunable multicolor emissions. These nanocrystals have demonstrated promising potential applications in anticounterfeiting. Our results not only provide a simple and feasible route for simultaneous size/morphology control and multicolor upconversion luminescence tuning, but also can further expand the utility of UCNCs in the frontier applications ranging from optical encoding to information security.

Abstract:Size-tunable beta-NaYF4: Yb/Er (50-400 nm) up-converting nanoparticles (UCNPs) with a strong green emission were successfully prepared by a facile thermal decomposition method in a short period of time. The effects of the reaction time, the oleic acid (OA) content, and the doped Gd3+ concentration on the crystal structure, the size evolution mechanism and the luminescence mechanism of the beta-NaYF4: Yb/Er nanoparticles were discussed in detail. Characterization was completed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution (HR-TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photoluminescence (PL). The results reveal that the phase transition was completed at 15 min and the morphology of the NaYF4: Yb/Er UCNPs changed from spherical to large hexagonal disks (200-400 nm) in non-doped Gd3+. An appropriate decrease in the volume ratio of oleic acid (OA) to 1-octadecene (ODE) promoted NaF production, resulting in the formation of the hexagonal phase crystals and the subsequent increase of luminous intensity by 30-40 times. More importantly, the size of the beta-NaYF4: Yb/Er decreased with Gd3+ doping, and the UCNPs ultimately transformed into small hexagonal prisms (50 nm) with high monodispersity when the doping concentration of Gd3+ was 60 mmoL. The PL spectra confirmed that the luminous intensity of the UCNPs with doped Gd3+ was much higher than that of the undoped UCNPs. The results show that this route for UCNP fabrication with high luminous efficiency and a small size could be extended to other UCNP systems for multifunctional biomedical applications.

Abstract:LiYbF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by thermal decomposition of multiple trifluoroacetic acid salts. The SEM and TEM results show the size of the LiYF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles is about 100 nm in diagonal line, and the morphology of the LiYF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles is highly uniform with octahedral structure. Under the excitation of 980 nm, the LiYF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles have higher upconversion luminescence efficiency compared with that of NaYF4:Yb, Er. The results indicate that the as-prepared LiYbF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles may have potential applications in bio-probes and displays.

Abstract:Upconversion, converting two or more photons into a higher energy photon, has attracted tremendous interest for the wide applications ranging from science to engineering, yet always suffered from the shortcoming of low efficiency. We propose and demonstrate an approach to improve the upconversion efficiency by multi-wavelength excitation in Er3+ doped NaYF4 nanoparticles. Compared to the sum of emission intensities excited by two single-wavelength (790nm and 1520nm) separately, the green and red emissions from NaYF4: 1%Er nanoparticles excited by two-wavelength simultaneously are enhanced by a factor of 3.05 and 1.53, respectively. Ground state absorption and excited state absorption are considered to be the microscopic mechanism of the observed phenomenon. Our conception of improving the upconversion luminescence with multi-wavelength excitation might be a potential solution for the efficient ulilization of near infrared light by solar cells.

Abstract:A novel "water-in-oil" type reverse microemulsion assisted synthesis detail on the formation of mixed cubic and hexagonal (α + β) phase NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoparticles and their upconversion emission properties are presented. The effect of surfactants, fluorine precursors on the crystallographic phase fraction, crystallite size of NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoparticles on red upconversion emission is discussed. The NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoparticles synthesized with CTAB, and oleic acid surfactants give larger crystallite size and moderate hexagonal/cubic phase fraction. It has resulted very intense upconversion red emission. The oleic-acid-free preparation of NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoparticles resulted highly-agglomerated nanoparticles and low crystallite size, which gives less-intense upconversion emission. The cubic and hexagonal phase fractions of NaYF4:Yb,Er depends on surfactants, microemulsion, molar concentrations of precursors, and post-calcination. All these factors influence the mondispersibility and upconversion red emission properties. The 980 nm laser pump power dependent upconversion emission studies have confirmed the typical two-photon behavior in α + β phase NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoparticles. Their decay life was also measured to correlate the upconversion red emission intensity. The effect of mixed α + β phase NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoparticles on the 1530 nm NIR emission is also presented.

Abstract:Under hydrothermal environment, we synthesized lanthanide ions doped sodium yttrium fluoride (NaYF4:Er,Tm@NaYF4:Ce,Tb) luminescent microcrystals via an epitaxial growth technique. The structure and morphology of these microcrystals were examined by SEM, TEM, EDS and XRD measurements. These particles show dual-mode emissions with red upconversion (UC) and green down conversion (DC) as single particles level. The mean length and diameter of these microparticles increase from 0.43 to 2.26 μm and from 1.33 to 1.86 μm, respectively. Most interestingly, the photoluminescence properties of NaYF4:Er,Tm@NaYF4:Ce,Tb phosphor crystals are highly dependent on the crystallite size. The microcrystals fluoresce emit dual-mode emissions when they are solid or dispersed in solvents. Benefiting its intensive fluorescence and uniform morphology, these materials hold great potential for security and anti-counterfeiting applications.

Abstract:We designed and synthesized NaYF4:Yb,Tm@LiLuF4:Nd core-shell nanoparticles, which can emit at nm under 980 nm excitation and at similar to 1060 nm under 808 nm excitation, simultaneously having an upconversion and downshifting mechanism for near-infrared (NIR) emission. After surface modification with sodium citrate, the soluble nanoparticles were used in the in vitro NIR luminescence imaging to compare the penetration depth and the scattering of tissue. Furthermore, to determine the differences between the upconversion and downshifting fluorescence for biological imaging, the soluble nano particles also were operated on the aforementioned two modes for in vivo imaging.
Highly Efficient Multicolor Up-Conversion Emissions and Their Mechanisms of Monodisperse NaYF4:Yb,Er Core and Core/Shell-Structured Nanocrystals

Abstract:This paper comprehensively presents the highly efficient multicolor up-conversion (UC) emissions and related mechanisms of monodisperse NaYF4:Yb,Er core (alpha- and beta-NaYF4:Yb,Er) and core/shell (alpha-NaYF4:Yb,Er@alpha-NaYF4 and beta-NaYF4:Yb,Er@alpha-NaYF4) nanocrystals with controlled size (5-14 nra for alpha-phase nanocrystals and 20-300 nm for beta-phase nanocrystals), chemical composition, and surface state. These nanoparticles were synthesized via a unique delayed nucleation pathway using trifluoroacetates as precursors in hot solutions of oleic acid/oleylamine/1-octadecene. With the naked eye and natural light the intense multicolor UC emissions (red, yellow, or green, without filters) can be observed in cyclohexane dispersions of as-prepared nanocrystals (1 wt%) excited by a 980 nm laser source (power density 1.22 W cm(-2)). On the basis of compositional optimization for beta-NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals, the intensity ratio of green to red emission (f(g/r)) reaches ca. 30, the highest value to our knowledge. The highly efficient multicolor UC emissions were aroused from the controlled crystallite size, phase, and associated defect state. beta-NaYF4:Yb,Er and large beta-NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals displayed a normal two-photon UC process excited by a 980 nm NIR laser, while small P-NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals showed an unusual partially three-photon process. Shell formation could remarkably decrease the surface defects and surface ligands influence and thus decrease the associated nonradiative decays. As a result, the core/shell-structured alpha-NaYF4:Yb,Er@alpha-NaYF4 and beta-NaYF4:Yb,Er@alpha-NaYF4 nanocrystals exhibited greatly enhanced green emission intensity,fg/r, and saturation power with respect to their counterparts. The remarkable UC properties of the as-synthesized NaYF4:Yb,Er core and core/shell nanocrystals demonstrate that they are promising UC nanophosphors of adequate theoretical and practical interest.

Abstract:Efficient near-infrared (NIR) upconversion Yb and Tm codoped NaYF4 nanocrystal reporter was prepared by synthesis at room temperature via wet-chemical route and then heat-treatment at elevated temperature. Several parameters such as pH value of solution, sequence of reactant addition, and annealing temperature, which have strong impacts on the structure and morphology of the nanoparticles, were investigated. Upconversion mechanism and factors that affect the fluorescent performance of the NaYF4:Yb, Tm nanoparticles were discussed. Besides the strong emission around 474nm, a much more intense emission at about 800nm was observed emitted by NaYF4:Yb, Tm nanoparticles under 980nm IR excitation. This strong NIR emission is favorable for the highly sensitive label used in biological detection or in vivo NIR fluorescence imaging.
