Abstract:A novel Pd-modified TiO2 photocatalyst composited with carbon nanoparticles (TiO2-Pd/C) was synthesized via a sol-gel method. Characterized by XRD, Raman, BET, HRTEM, EDAX, XPS, absorption spectra and PL techniques, the introduced Pd existed as unique O-Pd-O species, and C existed as the substance carbon nanoparticles on the surface of TiO2, behaving as a composited photocatalyst on a nanoscale. Based on the experimental results and theoretical calculations, it was found that the introduction of O-Pd-O surface species and the carbon nanoparticles extend the absorption into the visible light region and facilitate the separation of photogenerated charge carriers, resulting in a much better photocatalytic activity of the photo-reduction of CO2 into CH4, than would be achieved with TiO2-Pd and TiO2/C samples.

Abstract:Different percentage of PdO composited TiO2 photocatalysts (TiO2-PdOX%, X >= 1.5) are prepared using the sol-gel way. It can be revealed that the inducted Pd ions play a role of PdO surface species instead of entering into the TiO2 crystal lattice determined by the characterization measurements of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The behaviors of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and band structure of the synthesized TiO2-PdOX% (X >= 1.5) photocatalysts are investigated by Photoluminescence (PL), PL lifetime decay curves, XPS valence band (VB) spectra, the density-functional theory (DFT) calculation and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra. The TiO2-PdOX% (X >= 1.5) photocatalysts exhibit higher activity for conversion of CO2 to CH4 than pristine TiO2 due to the presence of PdO. The inactivation mechanism for TiO2-PdOX% photoreduction is also discussed. This work can further explain the influence of surface species on photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:The novel Pd-and Mn-comodified TiO2 photocatalyst (TiO2 Pd-Mn) was prepared via a simple sol gel method. The introduced Pd and Mn existed as the -O-Pd-O- and O-Mn-O species on the surface of the photo catalyst. The band structure and density of states are studied by theoretical calculations, which is demonstrated by the experimental results. The modification with Pd and Mn ions results in the strong visible response and efficient separation of photogenerated carriers. Thus, the TiO2-Pd-Mn exhibit improved photocatalytic activity compared with pure TiO2, TiO2 Pd, and TiO2-Mn for photoreduction of CO2 and H2O into CH4. It is an effective method on developing the highly active TiO2-based materials by modification with double elements on the surface.

Abstract:Modulating electronic structures of single-atom metal cocatalysts is vital for highly active photoreduction of CO2, and it's especially challenging to develop a facile method to modify the dispersion of atomical photocatalytic sites. We herein report an ion-loading pyrolysis route to in-situ anchor Pd single atoms as well as twinned Pd nanoparticles on ultra-thin graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (PdTP/PdSA-CN) for high-efficiency photoreduction of CO2. The anchored Pd twinned nanoparticles donate electrons to adjacent single Pd-N4 sites through the carbon nitride networks, and the optimized PdTP/PdSA-CN photocatalyst exhibits a CO evolution rate up to 46.5 mu mol g-1 h-1 with nearly 100% selectivity. As revealed by spectroscopic and theoretical analyses, the superior photocatalytic activity is attributed to the lowered desorption barrier of carbonyl species at electron-enriched Pd single atoms, together with the improved efficiencies of light-harvesting and charge separation/transport. This work has demonstrated the engineering of the electron density of single active sites with twinned metal nanoparticles assisted by strong electronic interaction with the support of the atomic metal, and unveiled the underlying mechanism for expedited photocatalytic efficiency.

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 has been a challenge for some time because this complex reaction produces multiple products, some of which require a high electron density around the active sites to drive the multi-electron reduction. Herein, a Pd-NiO/TiO2 catalyst was prepared by hydrothermal production of anatase TiO2 nanosheets, followed by chemical deposition of NiO and photoreduction of Pd. The introduction of NiO to TiO2 formed a p-n junction, whose internal electric field drives the migration of holes to NiO. Meanwhile, the introduction of Pd to TiO2 formed a Schottky junction, which facilitated the photo-generated electron transfer from TiO2 to Pd. The directional migration of electrons and holes significantly enhanced the charge separation and generated high electron density on Pd, which efficiently and selectively reduced CO2 to CH4.

Abstract:Due to the low charge separation efficiency and high stability of the CO2 molecule, photoreduction of CO2 into a single multielectron product such as CH4 with a simultaneous high conversion rate and selectivity is challenging. Therefore, it is highly desirable to accelerate charge separation and transfer and provide an electron‐enriched catalyst surface for the deep reduction of CO2. Herein, a Pd/Cu2O/TiO2 ternary hybrid photocatalyst consisting of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) and Cu2O NPs‐decorated TiO2 nanosheets is rationally designed, and highly selective photocatalytic photoreduction of CO2 into CH4 is achieved. The Pd/Cu2O/TiO2 photocatalyst shows a high CH4 production rate of 42.8 μmol g−1 h−1 with an extremely high selectivity of 99.5%. This CH4 production rate is 61.1, 5.4, and 2.8 times higher than the bare TiO2, Cu2O/TiO2, and Pd/TiO2, respectively. In this Pd/Cu2O/TiO2 hybrid, a consecutive multistep charge transfer is steered between the Cu2O/TiO2 heterojunction and Pd, ensures accelerated charge separation and transfer, and leads to the formation of a spatially separated electron‐enriched surface (Pd) and hole‐enriched surface (Cu2O). This spatially oriented charge transfer and the charge‐enriched catalyst surface synergistically contribute to the simultaneous high conversion rate and selectivity of CH4.

Abstract:The photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction is a sustainable route to the direct conversion of greenhouse gases into chemicals without additional energy consumption. Given the vast amount of greenhouse gas, numerous efforts have been devoted to developing inorganic photocatalysts, e.g., titanium dioxide (TiO2 ), due to their stability, low cost, and environmentally friendly properties. However, a more efficient TiO2 photocatalyst without noble metals is highly desirable for CO2 reduction, and it is both difficult and urgent to produce selectively valuable compounds. Here, a novel "single-atom site at the atomic step" strategy is developed by anchoring a single tungsten (W) atom site with oxygen-coordination at the intrinsic steps of classic TiO2 nanoparticles. The composition of active sites for CO2 reduction can be controlled by tuning the additional W5+ to form W5+ -O-Ti3+ sites, resulting in both significant CO2 reduction efficiency with 60.6 μmol g-1 h-1 and selectivity for methane (CH4 ) over carbon monoxide (CO), which exceeds those of pristine TiO2 by more than one order of magnitude. The mechanism relies on the accurate control of the single-atom sites at step with 22.8% coverage of surface sites and the subsequent excellent electron-hole separation along with the favorable adsorption-desorption of intermediates at the sites.

Abstract:A novel copper and carbon co-modified TiO2 photocatalyst (TiO2-Cu/C) was prepared using a simple sol-gel method. The properties of the photocatalysts were investigated by XRD, Raman, BET, HRTEM, EDAX, XPS, absorption spectroscopy and PL techniques. It was revealed that copper was present as -O-Cu-O- species and carbon existed as elementary substance carbon nanoparticles on the surface of TiO2. Based on the experimental results, the band structure and electronic density of states of TiO2, TiO2-Cu and elementary substance carbon are predicted by theoretical calculations. The energy levels of the -O-Cu-O- species and the carbon nanoparticles were located above the valence band, which extends the absorption into the visible light region, facilitate the separation of photogenerated charge carriers and provide hole reactive sites on the surface. Thus, the photocatalytic activity of TiO2-Cu/C is much higher than that of pure TiO2, TiO2/C and TiO2-Cu for photoreduction of CO2 and H2O into CH4 under UV-light irradiation.
Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance Toward CO2 Hydrogenation over Nanosized TiO2-Loaded Pd under UV Irradiation

Abstract:A series of Pd/TiO2 photocatalysts were synthesized by a simple glucose reduction method, and their photocatalysis properties were evaluated in an array of CO2 hydrogenations. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, EDX, EDX mapping, UV-vis DRS, Raman spectroscopy, PL spectroscopy, XPS, and N-2 adsorption. In terms of product yields (in micromoles per gram of Catalyst), a 1.0 wt % Pd/TiO2 catalyst (CH4, 355.62; CO, 46.35; C2H6, 39.69) was found to be superior to pristine TiO2 (CH4, 42.65; CO, 4.73; C2H6, 2.7) and other composites under UV irradiation for 3 h, possibly because of a synergistic effect between the palladium nanoparticles and the TiO2 support. The palladium nanoparticles on the surface of TiO2 substantially accelerated electron transfer and acted as active sites for the adsorption and activation of CO2 molecules, to promote CO2 hydrogenation. During the photocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation, dissociated hydrogen reacts with CO2- activated on the Pd/TiO2 photocatalyst to form a new Pd-C surface species that is stable during the reaction and further transforms to generate methane. A detailed mechanism of photocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation is discussed to account for the performance of the Pd/TiO2 photocataryst in the reaction.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction into valuable fuel and chemical production has been regarded as a prospective strategy for tackling with the issues of the increasing of greenhouse gases and shortage of sustainable energy. A composite photocatalysis system employing a semiconductor enriched with oxygen vacancy and coupled with metallic cocatalyst can facilitate charge separation and transfer electrons. In this work, mesoporous TiO2 and titanium-based perovskite oxides (BaTiO3 and SrTiO3) nanoparticle assembly incorporated with abundant oxygen vacancy and copper particles have been successfully synthesized for CO2 photoreduction. As an example, the TiO2 decorated with different amounts of Cu particles has an impact on photocatalytic CO2 reduction into CH4 and CO. Particularly, the optimal TiO2/Cu-0.1 exhibits nearly 13.5 times higher CH4 yield (22.27 μmol g-1 h-1) than that of pristine TiO2 (1.65 μmol g-1 h-1). The as-obtained BaTiO3/Cu-0.1 and SrTiO3/Cu-0.1 also show enhanced CH4 yields towards photocatalytic CO2 reduction compared with pristine ones. Based on the temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and photo/electrochemical measurements, the co-embedding of Cu particles and abundant oxygen vacancy into the titanium-based oxides could promote CO2 adsorption capacity as well as separation and transfer of photoinduced electron-hole pairs, and finally result in efficient CO2 photoreduction upon the TiO2/Cu, SrTiO3/Cu, and BaTiO3/Cu composites.

Abstract:Solar driven conversion of CO2 into carbonaceous chemicals is a promising strategy to mitigate greenhouse gas emission and simultaneously store renewable energy. The rational construction of heterostructured cocatalysts represents an efficient method to improve the photocatalytic activity and selectivity for CO2 reduction. In this work, with Pd@Au core-shell nanostructures with tunable Au thickness as model cocatalysts, we demonstrate the synergism of surface strain and interfacial polarization for enhanced photoreduction of CO2 to CO. According to our experimental analysis and theoretical simulation, resulting from the mismatch in lattice parameters between the Pd core and the Au shell, compressive strain on the Au surface elevates the d-band center and improves the adsorption of the key intermediate *COOH. Meanwhile, charge polarization, driven by the difference in electronegativity between Pd and Au, accelerates the interfacial charge transfer and increases the electron density on the Au surface. It is found that both effects are dependent on the thickness of the Au shell. As a result, a three-atom-thick Au shell dramatically boosts the overall efficiency in CO2-to-CO conversion with an impressive activity of 166.3 mu mol g(cat)(-1) h(-1) and selectivity of 90.6%. This study can be viewed as a means of designing photocatalysts via the simultaneous control of surface catalytic reactivity and interfacial charge transfer in cocatalysts.
Promoting the protonation step on the interface of titanium dioxide for selective photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CH4 by using red phosphorus quantum dots

Abstract:Enhancing the selectivity of hydrocarbon in CO2 is a great challenge. Herein, taking widely-used and highly-stable TiO2 as an example, we found that the protonation step, the key step for CH4 production, can change from endoergic to exoergic by using red phosphorus quantum dots. Consequently, the main product in CO2 reduction can be shifted from CO into CH4. The preparation method is very simple, which just ultrasonically treating the red P in the presence of TiO2. With an initial rate of CH4 production of 4.69 µmol·g−1h−1, under simulated solar light, it manifests a significant 49.4-fold enhancement of CH4 yield over TiO2. Density functional calculation indicates that the red P optimizes the surface electronic structure. The Gibbs free energy for CHO* formation (−1.12 eV) becomes lower than the desorption energy of the CO (−0.01 eV) when red P is introduced. This indicates that the CO intermediates on the surface are rapidly protonated to produce CHO*. Subsequently, the CHO* will be converted into CH4 instead of being desorbed from the surface to produce CO. This study demonstrates that red P quantum dot is a promising candidate for the development of efficient photocatalyst for CO2 photoreduction to CH4 under solar light irradiation.

Abstract:Significant efforts have been devoted to develop efficient visible-light-driven photocatalysts for the conversion of CO2 to chemical fuels. The photocatalytic efficiency for this transformation largely depends on CO2 adsorption and diffusion. However, the CO2 adsorption on the surface of photocatalysts is generally low due to their low specific surface area and the lack of matched pores. Here we report a well-defined porous hypercrosslinked polymer-TiO2-graphene composite structure with relatively high surface area i.e., 988 m2 g-1 and CO2 uptake capacity i.e., 12.87 wt%. This composite shows high photocatalytic performance especially for CH4 production, i.e., 27.62 μmol g-1 h-1, under mild reaction conditions without the use of sacrificial reagents or precious metal co-catalysts. The enhanced CO2 reactivity can be ascribed to their improved CO2 adsorption and diffusion, visible-light absorption, and photo-generated charge separation efficiency. This strategy provides new insights into the combination of microporous organic polymers with photocatalysts for solar-to-fuel conversion.

Abstract:A hierarchically mesostructured TiO2/graphitic carbon composite photocatalyst with a high content of nanocrystalline TiO2 was prepared using a simple one-step nanocasting route. X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize this photocatalyst. It was observed that the coexistence of silica and graphitic carbon during the high temperature treatment stabilized the crystalline phase and the size of the anatase TiO2 nanocrystals (5-7 nm in diameter), which were uniformly dispersed in the graphitic carbon matrix after silica removal. The obtained hierarchically mesostructured TiO2/graphitic carbon composite photocatalyst with a high specific surface area and a high surface concentration of hydroxyl groups exhibited considerably higher activity in the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 with H2O under simulated solar irradiation compared to mesostructured anatase TiO2 prepared using a sol-gel method.

Abstract:Cu-based catalysts have been widely studied for photocatalytic CO2 reduction; however, the role of Cu species is still ambiguous because they exist in multiple forms, which can possibly interchange between themselves. In this paper, highly dispersed Cu+ was incorporated into a TiO2 lattice through a flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) route, and it exhibited excellent activity and stability for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The highest CO and CH4 yields were obtained on CuTi-1, reaching 43.5 and 16.7 mu mol g(-1) after 4 h of irradiation, which are 2.8 times and 8.4 times higher than those of pristine TiO2, respectively. After three cycles, the activity of CuTi-1 only slightly decreased. The highly dispersed Cu+ ions in the TiO2 lattice were very stable, and they effectively slowed the recombination of the photoinduced charges, which was confirmed by XPS and PL analyses. Meanwhile, the Cu+ ions in the TiO2 lattice promoted the adsorption and activation of CO2 and served as the active sites for CO2 photoreduction.
Promoting photocatalytic CO2 reduction to CH4 via a combined strategy of defects and tunable hydroxyl radicals

Abstract:A well-designed photocatalyst with excellent activity and selectivity is crucial for photocatalytic CO2 conversion and utilization. TiO2 is one of the most promising photocatalysts. However, its excessive surface oxidation potential and insufficient surface active sites inhibit its activity and photocatalytic CO2 reduction selectivity. In this work, highly dispersed Bi2Ti2O7 was introduced into defective TiO2 to adjust its oxidation potential and the generation of radicals, further inhibiting reverse reactions during the photocatalytic conversion of CO2. Moreover, an in situ topochemical reaction etching route was designed, which achieved defective surfaces, a contacted heterophase interface, and an efficient electron transfer path. The optimized heterophase photocatalyst exhibited 93.9% CH4 selectivity at a photocatalytic rate of 6.8 μmol·g-1·h-1, which was 7.9 times higher than that of P25. This work proposes a feasible approach to fabricating photocatalysts with well-designed band structures, highly dispersed heterophase interfaces, and sufficient surface active sites to effectively modulate the selectivity and activity of CO2 photoreduction by manipulating the reaction pathways.

Abstract:The photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction is a sustainable route to the direct conversion of greenhouse gases into chemicals without additional energy consumption. Given the vast amount of greenhouse gas, numerous efforts have been devoted to developing inorganic photocatalysts, e.g., titanium dioxide (TiO2 ), due to their stability, low cost, and environmentally friendly properties. However, a more efficient TiO2 photocatalyst without noble metals is highly desirable for CO2 reduction, and it is both difficult and urgent to produce selectively valuable compounds. Here, a novel "single-atom site at the atomic step" strategy is developed by anchoring a single tungsten (W) atom site with oxygen-coordination at the intrinsic steps of classic TiO2 nanoparticles. The composition of active sites for CO2 reduction can be controlled by tuning the additional W5+ to form W5+ -O-Ti3+ sites, resulting in both significant CO2 reduction efficiency with 60.6 μmol g- 1 h- 1 and selectivity for methane (CH4 ) over carbon monoxide (CO), which exceeds those of pristine TiO2 by more than one order of magnitude. The mechanism relies on the accurate control of the single-atom sites at step with 22.8% coverage of surface sites and the subsequent excellent electron-hole separation along with the favorable adsorption-desorption of intermediates at the sites.
