Abstract:A series of hexagonal Zn1-xCdxS photocatalysts with variable composition (0.2 <= x <= 1) is synthesized by a solvothermal method. XPS spectra of Zn 2p and Cd 3d regularly shift upon changing the composition of Zn1-xCdxS samples, due to the difference in the Mulliken atomic charges of Zn, Cd, and S. The photocatalytic activity of the samples for H-2 evolution from water was tested under visible-light irradiation (lambda >= 420 nm) without a cocatalyst; the Zn0.4Cd0.6S sample exhibited the highest photocatalytic H-2 evolution rate, which was about 81 mL h(-1) g(-1). Under irradiation with a 368 nm LED, the H-2 evolution rate decreased with increasing Cd fraction in the Zn1-xCdxS solid solution. By comparing the crystallinity, surface area, valence/conduction band positions, absorption spectra and fluorescence lifetimes, we conclude that the photocatalytic activity is related to the balance between the absolute positions of the valence/conduction bands and light absorption ability of the Zn1-xCdxS photocatalysts.

Abstract:Constructing novel surface microstructures for photocatalytic materials could significantly enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate from water splitting. In this work, novel 2D/3D structured CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 p-n heterojunction photocatalysts for water splitting were successfully prepared by a solvothermal method. The coupling of a 2D CuCo2S4 nanoplate on the surface of 3D flower-like CdIn2S4 microspheres has strengthened the visible light absorption and promoted the charge separation efficiency due to their tight contacting area. The obtained CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 (CSCIS-2) photocatalyst exhibited a hydrogen production rate of 1320 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which was fivefold of that for pure CdIn2S4. Additionally, cyclic tests demonstrated improved photoactivity stability of the samples. A series of photoelectrochemical characterizations confirmed the effective suppression of charge carrier recombination in CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 composite catalysts. Finally, a rational photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the semiconductor band theory. This work contributes to the enrichment of sulfide-based research and applications in photocatalysis.
Zn1–xCdxS Solid Solutions with Controlled Bandgap and Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic H2-Production Activity

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen (H-2) production from water splitting under visible light irradiation is considered to be an attractive way to solve the increasing global energy, crises in modern life. In this study, highly efficient photocatalytic H-2 production without the assistant of a cocatalyst was achieved using Znl(1-x)Cd(x)S solid solutions' as the visible-light-driven photocatalysts and a mixed Na2S and Na2SO3 aqueous solution as the sacrificial reagent. The Zn1-xCdxS samples were prepared by a simple zinc-cadmium-thiourea (Zn-Cd-Tu) complex thermolysis method using thiourea zinc acetate (Zn(Ac)(2)), and cadmium acetate (Cd(Ac)(2)) as the precursors The obtained Zn1-xCdxS solid solutions feature a small crystallite size and precisely controllable band structure, which are beneficial for the photocatalysis. When the Zn/Cd molar ratio is 1:1, the prepare Zn0.5Cd0.5S sample exhibits highest H-2-production rate of 7.42 mmol.h(-1).g(-1), exceeding that of the pure CdS and ZriS samples by more than 24 and 54 times, respectively, and even muck higher than that of optimal Pt-loaded CdS. This high photocatalytic H-2-production activity is attributed predominantly to enough visible-light absorption capacity and suitable conduction band potential of the Zn0.5Cd0.5S solid solution which is further evidenced from the related theory calculations on the band structures of the Zn1-xCdxS solid solutions. Moreover, the calculation on the Mulliken populations of Zn, Cd, and S toms for the first time provides new insight into the deep understanding of the chemical shifts of element binding energies for the Zn1-xCdxS solid solutions and the designing of new ternary photocatalytic materials.
Band Structure-Controlled Solid Solution of Cd1-xCd1-x ZnxSZnxS Photocatalyst for Hydrogen Production by Water Splitting

Abstract:A series of Cd1-xZnxS (x=0–0.92) photocatalysts were prepared by coprecipitation method and were calcined at 723K under N2 atmosphere. X-ray diffraction patterns results showed that the solid solution of Cd1-xZnxS were formed between ZnS and CdS. UV–Vis spectra indicated that the absorption edges of Cd1-xZnxS were red-shifted as the value of x decreased. The band gaps of the photocatalysts were estimated to be between 2.20–3.12eV (x=0–0.92) from the onsets of the absorption edges and almost showed linear variation with x increasing. The position of conduction band for solid solution is shifted towards more negative potential as compared to that of CdS. The hydrogen productions of Cd1-xZnxS (x=0–0.92) by splitting water photocatalytically under ultraviolet and visible light irradiation were carried out in an inner-irradiation type reactor. The results indicated that the photocatalyst of Cd0.62Zn0.16S has the highest rate of hydrogen evolution with the quantum efficiency of 2.17% and 0.60% under ultraviolet and visible light irradiation, respectively. It has been considered that the crystallite size, (101) plane and band gap for the Cd1-xZnxS solid solutions have a strong influence on the efficiency of hydrogen production capability for water splitting.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting taking the advantage of using solar energy directly is one of the most effective strategies for hydrogen evolution. The development of facile methods for synthesizing highly efficient and stable photocatalysts for hydrogen production still remains a great challenge. Herein, a metal organic framework (MOF)-templated strategy was designed for the synthesis of solid solutions of (Zn0.95Cu0.05)(1-x)CdxS that exhibit outstanding photocatalytic hydrogen production reaction activity. More importantly, efficient light capturing ability and photogenerated charges separation were accomplished via fine-tuning the composition of the photocatalysts by adjusting the concentrations of doping metals in the template MOFs. Under visible light (lambda > 420 nm), an optimized nanocatalyst, (Zn0.95Cu0.05)(0.6)Cd0.4S, exhibited a higher durability and satisfied photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 4150.1 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) of water splitting.
Room-Temperature Synthesis of Zn0.80cd0.20s Solid Solution with A High Visible-Light Photocatalytic Activity for Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Visible light photocatalytic H(2) production from water splitting is of great significance for its potential applications in converting solar energy into chemical energy. In this study, a series of Zn(1-x)Cd(x)S solid solutions with a nanoporous structure were successfully synthesized via a facile template-free method at room temperature. The obtained solid solutions were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and N(2) adsorption-desorption analysis. The solid solutions show efficient photocatalytic activity for H(2) evolution from aqueous solutions containing sacrificial reagents S(2-) and SO(3)(2-) under visible-light irradiation without a Pt cocatalyst, and loading of the Pt cocatalyst further improves the visible-light photocatalytic activity. The optimal photocatalyst with x = 0.20 prepared at pH = 7.3 displays the highest activity for H(2) evolution. The bare and 0.25 wt% Pt loaded Zn(0.80)Cd(0.20)S nanoparticles exhibit a high H(2) evolution rate of 193 μmol h(-1) and 458 μmol h(-1) under visible-light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm), respectively. In addition, the bare and 0.25 wt% Pt loaded Zn(0.80)Cd(0.20)S catalysts show a high H(2) evolution rate of 252 and 640 μmol h(-1) under simulated solar light irradiation, respectively. Moreover, the Zn(0.80)Cd(0.20)S catalyst displays a high photocatalytic stability for H(2) evolution under long-term light irradiation. The incorporation of Cd in the solid solution leads to the visible light absorption, and the high content of Zn in the solid solution results in a relatively negative conduction band, a modulated band gap and a rather wide valence bandwidth, which are responsible for the excellent photocatalytic performance of H(2) production and for the high photostability.

Abstract:A series of (CuIn)(x)Zn2(1-x)S2 solid solutions has been successfully synthesized by a solvothermal approach, and the obtained solid solutions, with a size of about 10 nm, exhibit significant absorption in the visible light region and their band gap can be correspondingly tuned from 2.59 eV to 1.64 eV with an increase of the x value from 0.05 to 0.5, implying that they can be used as visible-light driven photocatalysts. Furthermore, the obtained (CuIn)(x)Zn2(1-x)S2 solid solutions display highly efficient photocatalytic activities for H-2 evolution from aqueous solutions containing sacrificial reagents (SO32- and S2-) under visible light (lambda > 420 nm) even without noble metal co-catalysts, e.g. (CuIn)(0.2)Zn1.6S2, with a band gap of 2.10 eV, exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity of 0.984 mmol g(-1) h(-1) even without a Pt co-catalyst. Further studies reveal that the photocatalytic H-2 evolution of solid solutions depends on their composition as well as the photophysical properties, such as the ability to absorb visible light and the generation and separation of photo-induced electrons and holes.
Twins in Cd1−xZnxS Solid Solution: Highly Efficient Photocatalyst for Hydrogen Generation from Water

Abstract:Cd-1 xZnxS solid solution with nano-twin structures are synthesized and exhibit superior photocatalytic activities for H-2 evolution from water under visible light irradiation (lambda >= 430 nm) without noble metal co-catalysts. Such Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanocrystals show the highest activity for hydrogen evolution with an extremely high apparent quantum yield (AQY = 43%) at 425 nm, achieving a hydrogen evolution rate of 1.79 mmol h(-1) without noble metals. The hydrogen evolution rate of 1.70 mmol h(-1) was achieved under simulated sunlight conditions (without infrared light). The "back to back" potential formed by parallel nano-twins in the Cd1-xZnxS crystals can significantly improve the separation of the photo-generated electrons/holes (preventing their recombination) thus enhancing the photocatalytic activity. Photodeposition experiments of noble metals strongly support such a mechanism. It is found that noble metals were selectively photo-deposited at central regions between the twin boundaries. The concentration of free electrons at the central region of twins was markedly higher and the twins can effectively separate the H-2 evolution sites (electrons) from oxidation reaction sites (holes).

Abstract:Photocatalytic H2 production using solar energy has received great attention, but suffers from low photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, Zn(1−x)CdxS solid solution with different Zn/Cd molar ratio was synthesized by a solvothermal method, and tested for photocatalytic H2 production from water. The bandgap, charge carrier separation efficiency and surface defect states of the Zn(1−x)CdxS can be adjusted by altering the Zn/Cd molar ratio. The separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes was greatly enhanced with the Zn/Cd molar ratio of 0.8:0.2. Moreover, the Zn0.8Cd0.2S exposed most surface defect states compared to those of other Zn(1−x)CdxS, which can be act as electron pools and active sites for improving photocatalytic H2 production. Therefore, when the molar ratio of Zn/Cd is 0.8:0.2, the Zn0.8Cd0.2S exhibited the best performance for photocatalytic H2 production with the H2 production rate of 7.71 mmol·g-1·h-1, which is much higher than that of ZnS (17 μmol·g-1·h-1) and CdS (5.37 μmol·g-1·h-1). This work provides an in-depth understanding of the surface defect states for enhancing the photocatalytic H2 production.

A Simplified Method for Synthesis of Band-Structure-controlled (Cuin)xzn2(1-X)s2 Solid Solution Photocatalysts with High Activity of Photocatalytic H2 Evolution under Visible-Light Irradiation

Abstract:(CuIn)(x)Zn2(1-x)S2 (x = 0.01-0.5) microspheres were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method. They were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-Vis), Raman scattering spectra and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurement. It was found that the (CuIn)(x)Zn2(1-x)S2 samples formed solid solution only in the presence of surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). CTAB enabled the increase of the surface area for the (CuIn)(x)Zn2(1-x)S2 solid solutions. Diffuse reflection spectra of the solid solutions shifted monotonically to long wavelength side as the value of x increased. The photocatalytic H-2 evolution activity under visible-light irradiation of the solid solutions was evaluated. The result showed that the activity depended on their corresponding compositions closely. Ru (1.5 wt%)-loaded (CuIn)(0.2)Zn1.6S2 showed the highest photocatalytic activity of 198.09 mu mol h(-1) under visible-light irradiation, and the apparent quantum yield amounted to 15.45% at 420 nm. Furthermore, the density functional theory (OFT) calculations showed that the solid solution with the ration of ZnS and CuInS2, 6:1, was a direct band gap semiconductor. The valence band consisted of the hybrid orbital of S 3p and Cu 3d and the conduction band consisted of In 5s5p orbital mixed with Zn 4s4p. Abstract:Nanocrystalline quarternary Sulfide CuInS2-ZnS solid solution was prepared by a solvothermal route in an autoclave at 200 degrees C using ethylenediamine as the solvent and sulfur powder as the sulfur source. A trace amount Of In3+ incorporated into ZnS can induce the transformation of the ZnS phase from Cubic to hexagonal. The particle size of In-ZnS decreases with increasing amount of In3+ in ZnS. Among the (CuIn)(x)Zn2(1-x)S2 solid solution, (CuIn)(0.09)Zn1.82S2 shows the highest photocatalytic H-2 production rate from water with S2--SO32- Sacrificial agents under visible light (lambda > 420 nm) irradiation. No obvious deactivation of the (CuIn)(0.09)-Zn1.82S2 catalyst in pbotocatalytic H-2 production was observed after reaction for 20 h.

Abstract:A series of Cd x Zn1−x S (x = 0.1–0.9) photocatalysts were prepared by coprecipitation. They could form solid solution semiconductors with hexagonal phase in agreement with pure CdS by characterization of XRD. The photophysical properties of Cd x Zn1−x S photocatalysts were measured by UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectrum and surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS). The band gap energy gradually reduced with the increasing of x value in CdxZn1−x S, and when x = 0.7, the Cd0.7Zn0.3S photocatalyst had the strongest surface photovoltage. Cd x Zn1−x S photocatalysts were used in the photodecomposition of H2S to H2. The evolution rate of H2 over the Cd0.7Zn0.3S photocatalyst was also the highest among Cd x Zn1−x S photocatalysts. And the effect of calcination temperature on the evolution rate of H2 was investigated and the optimum temperature was 650°C.

Abstract:Modulating the electronic structure of Cadmium sulfide (CdS) by non-metallic elements to produce solidsolution photocatalysts serves as a potential route to improve its performance of photocatalytic hydrogen (H-2) evolution. However, exploring an effective synthetic route of CdS-based solid solution is still a great challenge. Herein, the CdS1-xSex solid-solution nanocrystals were successfully synthesized by an accessible photoinduced self-transformation route, including the direct formation of dispersible CdS1-x(SeS)(x) and the in situ self-transformation of selenosulfide ((SeS)(2-)) to Se2- by photoexcited electrons. The prepared CdS1-xSex solid-solution photocatalysts possess a small crystallite size of ca. 5 nm and their band-gaps can be easily tuned in a wide range of 1.84-2.28 eV by tailoring the mole ratio of Se/S. The resultant CdS0.90Se0.10 solid-solution photocatalyst realizes the highest H-2-production tempo of 94.6 mu mol.h(-1), which is 1.6 folds higher than that of CdS. The experimental and theoretical studies supported that the incorporation of Se atoms could not only narrow the bandgap value to reinforce visible-light absorption, but also tune its electronic structure to optimize interfacial H-2-evolution dynamics, thus achieving an efficient photocatalytic H-2-production rate of the dispersible CdS1-xSex solid solution. Abstract:Final metal sulfides Zn0.5Cd0.5S (ZnCdS-CH) are synthesized through a coprecipitation process followed by hydrothermal treatment. The morphological, structural and optical properties have been investigated extensively via diverse analytical techniques. The ZnCdS-CH solid solution without noble metal loading is employed in photocatalytic H-2 evolution under visible light irradiation (lambda >= 420 nm) and achieves a superior activity rate of 0.971 mmol h(-1), which exceeds those of coprecipitated Zn0.5Cd0.5S (ZnCdS-C) samples by more than 13 times. Moreover, in the recycle test, the ZnCdS-CH photocatalyst shows a stable photocatalytic activity for H-2 evolution under long-term visible-light irradiation. Characterization analyses demonstrate that the excellent photocatalytic H-2-evolution performance of the ZnCdS-CH sample arises predominantly from the two-step processing procedure of coprecipitation followed by hydrothermal treatment at 200 degrees C, which makes it possess a hexagonal (wurtzite) structure, good dispersity, enhanced crystallinity, an appropriate band gap, a more negative conduction band, as well as a large number of surface defect states. This finding is of great significance for designing a facile, reproducible and inexpensive method to realise the potential of ZnxCd1-xS ternary metal sulfides in the field of H-2 evolution by water splitting.

Abstract:Efficient solar‐to‐hydrogen (STH) conversion through water splitting relies on the development of low‐cost photocatalysts with high photoactivity and stability. ZnxCd1−xS, an emerging metal sulfide (MS) solid solution for STH, possesses several unique advantages, such as a tunable bandgap, abundant elemental constituents, and high stability. Although ZnxCd1−xS‐based photocatalysts are investigated for hydrogen evolution, their photoactivity still has to be enhanced for commercial applications. Herein, the design concept, crystal and band structure properties, and original photoactivity of ZnxCd1−xS are briefly introduced, and ZnxCd1−xS solutions with different morphologies and structures, modifications, synthesis methods, and vacancy engineering are then discussed. Subsequently, the combination of ZnxCd1−xS and cocatalysts and several representative ZnxCd1−xS‐based heterojunction photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution are reviewed and discussed in detail. Finally, the unsolved issues in the application of ZnxCd1−xS photocatalysts and their potential solutions for developing advanced ZnxCd1−xS‐based photocatalysts are discussed. ZnxCd1−xS‐based photocatalysts are reviewed based on the engineering of crystal and band structure, morphology and structure, vacancy, cocatalyst, and heterojunction; recent research progress and the unsolved issues have to be further studied in future research.

Abstract:For a CdS-based photocatalyst, both the photocorrosion resistance and the rapid H-2-production reaction are highly required for improving its photocatalytic H-2-production performance. In this study, a facile strategy was reported to simultaneously realize an improved photocorrosion resistance and rapid interfacial H-2-evolution reaction of CdxZn1-xS solid-solution photocatalysts in a sulfur-rich S2-/SO32- solution. Here, the suspensible CdxZn1-xS nanocrystal photocatalysts are prepared by a one-step co-precipitation route through the direct introduction of Zn2+/Cd2+ mixing ions in a sulfur-rich Na2S-Na2SO3 solution, and the resultant CdxZn1-xS nanocrystals (ca. 5 nm) display a suspensible structure owing to the numerous and selective adsorption of S2-/SO32- on the surface of these CdxZn1-xS nanocrystals. It is found that the bandgap structure of CdxZn1-xS (from 2.25 to 3.52 eV) nanocrystals can be easily controlled by adjusting the Cd2+/Zn2+ molar ratio. The photocatalytic experimental results suggested that the suspensible CdxZn1-xS nanocrystal photocatalysts clearly displayed an excellent photocatalytic H-2-production performance, and the suspensible Cd0.6Zn0.4S nanocrystals exhibit the highest photocatalytic H-2-generation performance of 717.19 mol h(-1), a value higher than that of the sole CdS (320.99 mol h(-1)) and ZnS (5.89 mol h(-1)) by a factor of 2.2 and 121.8 times, respectively. Based on the experimental results, a possible S2- active site-mediated mechanism accounted for the high H-2-production activity of the suspensible CdxZn1-xS nanocrystals, namely the numerous adsorbed S2- ions not only function as efficient hole scavengers to rapidly consume the photogenerated holes, resulting in an improved photocorrosion resistance of suspensible CdxZn1-xS nanocrystals, but also serve as effective H+-capturing active sites to accelerate the interfacial H-2-production reaction. Meanwhile, an optimum bandgap structure of suspensible CdxZn1-xS nanocrystals is also extremely required for promoting the photocatalytic H-2-production activity. This research may provide advanced insights for developing stable and high-activity photocatalytic materials.
Synergetic microstructure engineering by induced ZB/WZ twin boundaries and S vacancies in Zn0.5Cd0.5S-based S-scheme photocatalyst for highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production

Abstract:The surface-abundant active sites, rapid charge transport and associated prolonged electron lifetime, are vital factors that determine efficient photocatalysis. A series of different Zn0.5Cd0.5S solid solutions, including single crystalline Zn0.5Cd0.5S (ZCS), single crystalline Zn0.5Cd0.5S with S vacancies (ZCS-V), twin structured-Zn0.5Cd0.5S (T-ZCS) and twin-structure Zn0.5Cd0.5S with S vacancies (T-ZCSv) are successfully prepared in the present work by manipulating the conditions of the hydrothermal reaction. Experimental results confirm that the optimized T-ZCSv photocatalyst that possesses hexagonal wurtzite/zinc blende (WZ/ZB) twinned structure and rich-surface S vacancies exhibits an excellent photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiency of approximately 551.74 umol/h. The outstanding performance of the optimized T-ZCSv is attributed to the prolonged electron lifetime and effectively facilitated the separation and migration of charge carriers. These are provided by the periodically aligned WZ/ZB interfacial homojunction that forms type-II staggered energy band structure across the junction and abundant S vacancies that serve as electron trapping sites in the T-ZCSv. Furthermore, T-ZCSv are uniformly dispersed on the 2-Methylimidazole zinc salt [Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8 polyhedron)], which not only could inhibit the aggregation of T-ZCSv, but also expose more active sites for photocatalytic-redox reactions. Finally, a possible charge separation and transfer mechanism explaining the optimum activity of the outperforming sample is proposed on the basis of the results obtained from a range of investigations methods [Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Transmission Electron Microscopy and High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM/HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, Ultra Violet-visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflection spectroscopy, and Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy]. This study demonstrates the development of a structurally unique Zn0.5Cd0.5S (with twinned structure and S vacancies) and a Zn0.5Cd0.5S-based metal-organic framework (MOF) for photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:A series of Cd1−xZnxS thin films were deposited onto indium-doped tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis CdCl2, ZnCl2, and CS(NH2)2 aqueous solutions. The XRD patterns revealed that these films processed a wurtzite structure and a series of solid solutions of CdS and ZnS formed. The lattice constants decreased as the x value increased. From the transmittance and reflectance, the optical band gap was estimated to be between 2.45eV and 3.72eV, and the band gap increased as the x value increased according to a near linear relationship with the x value. The Mott-Schottky tests revealed that the flat potential shifted negatively as the x value increased. The photo responses agreed with the optical absorption of these films quite well. The current–potential measurements under chopped Xe lamp light irradiation show that the CdS deposited at 300°C had best photoresponse. Its photoelectrochemical efficiency was estimated to be about 0.95% under 0.73V bias from two electrodes current–potential tests.

Abstract:Formation of solid solutions is a good strategy to acquire materials with special properties and bring forth new type of applications or enhance the performance of currently existing devices. In this study, hollow ZnxCd1-xS nanospheres with different molar ratios were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal process. The products were fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. It was found that the photocatalysis performance of the as-prepared samples could be enhanced by formation of ZnxCd1-xS solid solutions. In addition, their photocatalytic activities are dependent on the Zn/Cd molar ratios and nanostructures of ZnxCd1-xS solid solutions. Hollow Zn0.2Cd0.8S spheres exhibit extremely high photocatalytic activity and good re-usability, and the photocatalytic conversion of RhB reaches as high as 96% after 50 min of irradiation.

Abstract:In the past decade, inorganic semiconductors have been successfully demonstrated as light absorbers in efficient solar water splitting to generate chemical fuels. Pseudobinary semiconductors Zn1-xCdxS (0≤x≤1) have exhibited a superior photocatalytic reactivity of H2 production from splitting of water by artificial solar irradiation without any metal catalysts. However, most studies had revealed that the extremely high efficiency with an optimal content of Zn1-xCdxS solid solution was determined as a result of elevating the conduction band minimum (CBM) and the width of bandgap. In addition to corresponding band structure and bandgap, the local crystal structure should be taken into account as well to determine its photocatalytic performance. Herein, we demonstrated the correlations between the photocatalytic activity and structural properties that were first studied through synchrotron X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The crystal structure transformed from zinc blende to coexisted phases of major zinc blende and minor wurtzite phases at a critical point. The heterojunction formed by coexistence of zinc blende and wurtzite phases in the Zn1-xCdxS solid solution can significantly improve the separation and migration of photoinduced electron-hole pairs. Besides, X-ray absorption spectra and UV-vis spectra revealed that the bandgap of the Zn0.45Cd0.55S sample extended into the region of visible light because of the incorporation of Cd element in the sample. These results provided a significant progress toward the realization of the photoelectrochemical mechanism in heterojunction between zinc blende and wurtzite phases, which can effectively separate the charge-carriers and further suppress their recombination to enhance the photocatalytic reactivity.
