Abstract:As an attractive C1 synthon, carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) has been extensively used in organic synthesis to produce carboxylic acids. In this research, stereoselective electrochemical carboxylation of α,β -unsaturated sulfones has been developed under transition-metal-free conditions. Abstract:We report herein a dicarbonylation of styrenes with aryl fluorides and potassium 2-ethoxy-2-oxoacetate by cooperative NHC and photoredox catalysis with good functional group tolerance in moderate to high yields. This gentle and efficient approach offers a valuable alternative to known strategies for synthesis of β -arylketoester. Mechanistic studies have shown that this protocol proceed via a radical-addition/coupling/elimination cascade reaction.

Abstract:C(sp3)–H bond functionalization is a powerful strategy for the synthesis of organic compounds due their abundance in simple starting materials. Photoredox catalysis has led to a diverse array of enabling C(sp3)–H activation strategies; however, the direct functionalization of C(sp3)–H to carboxylic acid derivatives remains underexplored. Disclosed herein is the development of a cooperative NHC/photoredox-catalyzed C(sp3)–H esterification transformation. This method enables access to benzylic, 𝛼–heteroatom, and formal β-esterification products in good to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract:Light-driven utilization of CO2 in organic synthesis is highly attractive because it mimics nature. However, such transformations are mainly limited to the incorporation of only a single CO2 molecule into organic compounds, far less than the number of CO2 molecules fixed in the product in photosynthesis. Here we report the visible-light photoredox-catalysed dicarboxylation of alkenes, allenes and (hetero)arenes with the incorporation of two CO2 molecules. This method realizes the formation of multiple C–C bonds with high chemo- and diastereoselectivities under mild conditions, which represents a simple, rapid and sustainable approach to valuable dicarboxylic acids. Moreover, this transition-metal-free protocol exhibits a low catalyst loading, good functional group tolerance, broad substrate scope, facile scalability and easy product derivatizations to give drug and material molecules. Mechanistic studies indicate a pathway by which a visible-light-induced two-electron reduction via sequential single electron transfer generates radical anions of such unsaturated substrates, broadening the repertoire of strategies.

Abstract:Here, we report an allylation reaction of aldehydes with butadiene using cobalt and chromium catalysts via a metal-hydride hydrogen atom transfer (MHAT) pathway under visible light irradiation. A variety of homoallylic alcohols can be obtained with high yield and excellent diastereoselectivity. The cheap and readily available raw materials and catalysts make the reaction system have a great potential application value.

Abstract:Domino-fluorination-protodefluorination decarboxylative cross-coupling of α-keto acids with styrene has been developed via photoredox catalysis. The critical part of this strategy is the formation of the carbon-fluorine (C-F) bond by the capture of a carbon-centered radical intermediate, which will overcome side reactions during the styrene radical functionalization process. Experimental studies have provided evidence indicating a domino-fluorination-protodefluorination pathway with α-keto acid initiating the photoredox cycle. The present catalytic protocol also affords a novel approach for the construction of α,β-unsaturated ketones under mild conditions.

Abstract:Thiyl radicals by far have taken part in manifold natural processes with regard to biochemistry. Utilizing their capability of reversibly adding onto carbon‐carbon double bond may be able to create valuable transformations. Herein, we report a novel thiyl radical precursor that can release sulfur‐centered radical by irradiation of visible light under mild conditions (without metals, photocatalysts, and other additives). A series of sulfur‐containing 3,3‐disubstituted benzofuran‐2(3H)‐ones were obtained with good functional group tolerance by thiol‐ene addition of styrenes with thiyl radicals. Mechanistic study confirmed the proposed process driven by EDA (Electron Donor‐Acceptor) complex.

Abstract:A dearomative coupling reaction of benzylmalonates and alkynes with CO2 via visible-light catalysis is developed, leading to a series of spiro-1,4-cyclohexadiene carboxylic acids. This three-component transformation achieves sequential dearomatization, alkenylation, and carboxylation of non-activated bezene ring, building spiro architecture and installing two functional groups in one reaction step. The strategy has the advantages of mild conditions, broad substrate scope, low loading of photocatalyst, redox neutral, excellent yield and high selectivity. Gram-scale reaction and product derivatizations indicate promising application prospects. Mechanistic studies reveal that the reaction might proceed through tandem radical addition, dearomatization and nucleophilic addition.

Abstract:Starting from diverse alkene-tethered aryl halides and silyl formate formed in situ from CO2 and PMHS (polymethylhydrosiloxane), the carbo-carboxylation of alkenes has been achieved using an easily accessible Pd/monophosphine ligand combination as the catalyst. This protocol provides competent access to construct a series of 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans, chromans, isochroman, indanes and tetralins bearing a β-acid moiety in moderate to excellent yield. Additionally, the example of domino carbo-carbonylation reactions has been demonstrated using diene-tethered aryl iodide as a starting material, forming an oxygen-containing bicyclic product in good yield. Abstract:A steric effect-controlled, zinc-mediated carboxylation of different 2-alkynyl bromides under an atmospheric pressure of CO2 has been developed by careful tuning of different reaction parameters, including the metal, solvent, temperature, and additive. 2-Substituted 2,3-allenoic acids were afforded from primary 2-alkynyl bromides, whereas the carboxylation of secondary 2-alkynyl bromides yielded 3-alkynoic acids in decent yields. Abstract:Cobalt-catalyzed reductive carboxylation of aryl bromides with carbon dioxide has been developed. The reaction proceeded under one atm pressure of CO(2)at 40 degrees C in the presence of cobalt iodide/2,2 '-bipyridine catalysts and zinc dust as a reducing reagent. Various aryl bromides could be converted to the corresponding carboxylic acids in good to high yields. Preliminary mechanistic experiments ruled out intervention of intermediate organozinc species for carboxylation with CO2, thus suggesting a direct CO(2)insertion into the corresponding ArCoBr species.
